The theme of the 2019 Left Coast Forum is:The Left Coast Forum—An Exciting Experiment in Movement-Building

The Left Coast Forum is an experiment in Movement Building. We see the term "left" to reach out to many social movements, all of which are challenging the system and not all of which use the term "left" to describe their work—but also include "progressive," "liberation," "system change," "socialism," "communism," and "revolution" in their worldview. We see building constructive, engaged discussion, debate as critical, but our main focus in on work! Doing the hard work to fight the system and build a movement that is broader and deeper than any one organization.

If you are coming to LCF-19 to "promote" your own organization but do not care about the work of others, to build for your workshop but not to attend the workshops of others, to talk but not act,  to criticize the system but not your own work, to perpetuate white chauvinism and the interests of "the white west side," to not prioritize the most oppressed communities of color, Third World people, inside and outside the U.S., this might not be the best place for you.

But if you want to learn and teach, reach out to others, if you are leading struggles in communities of color, if you want to make concrete commitments to help groups fighting in Black, Latino, immigrant, and other oppressed communities, if the word "left" to you means fighting for the rights of people all over the world, including their right to self-determination against the interference in their internal affairs of the U.S. government, which some call U.S. imperialism, then, yes, this is exactly where you want to be.  You are the people already building the LCF, the people who led the "Centrality of Race" conversations and LCF-18 last year, and the people we most need to help us build the Left Coast Forum.

Here are a few workshops and plenaries we plan to highlight.

Take Action/Take A Stand: We will feature 5 or more worthy organizations doing important work and helping to build the Left Coast Forum. Each person attending will agree to make a donation, buy a book, sign up for volunteering, join an organization, focusing on the struggle of Black, Latino, Indigenous, and Third World people inside and outside the United States.

Leaving the LCF with something to think about, something in your hand as a material reflection of solidarity, something to do, and someplace new to go.

The socialist imperative. Many on the left agree that some form of socialism is needed in the capitalist United States but what exactly does that mean. What do we think of the social democratic traditions, the communist traditions, the Black and Latino traditions of socialism and what are their reflections for work today. For us, the core of "socialism" is international, workers of the world unite, workers and oppressed people unite. In the United States, "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world" as Dr. King stated, we

have obligations to support the battles for self-determination of people all over the world fighting against our country's domination. How do we tear down the 800 U.S. military bases all over the world? How do we support the governments of Venezuela, Honduras, Cuba, Africa fighting for self-determination, how to stop U.S. wars. We will highlight groups carrying out international campaigns and again, how we can help their work. For us at LCF, this is the essence of socialism and we welcome that conversation in the context of international solidarity.

The 2020 national elections. We have said "national elections' rather than presidential elections because we have a broader view of their significance.

How to we build a united front to defeat Donald Trump. All the Saturday Night Live jokes about Trump and the pervasive condescending liberal contempt for him fatally underestimate his power and savvy—and the deep-seated racism and xenophobia in so much of the U.S. electorate. Trump is a formidable adversary and key Democratic strategists are already trying to reach out to the "white, suburban, moderate, conservative, women, mildly racist voters" who they see as the "swing vote" Note that none of us are in this category. How do we help to lead the fight against Trump but also find our own independence in that movement?

How do we find an independent political program to challenge the Democratic candidates so they do not pander to white conservative voters—running "to the left" in the Democratic Primaries and "to the right" in the general elections. How do we stop the Democratic Party establishment from taking the Left, the Black community, the Latino community, women, LGBTQ people and communities, immigrants, and international human rights advocates for granted, with the ruthless, "you have nowhere to go, so just vote Democrat and shut up" mantra.

How do we support the re-election campaigns of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib...and other courageous left Democrats? Already, there are Super PACS targeting them in the 2020 elections and many establishment Democrats who plan to run against them. What concrete help can we give them and how do we get involved in their re-election campaigns.

All this and more—so fasten your seat belts and get ready for a challenging, inspiring, you can't miss it, Left Coast Forum.
