(Stores) • Colette – An absolute fashion MUST.
Location : 213 Rue Saint-‐‑Honoré – Metro stops Tuileries or Pyramides.
• L’Eclaireur – A high-‐‑end fashion concept store, with amazing visual merchandising. Showcasing the likes of Lagerfeld and Galliano. Location : 40 Rue Sévigné – Metro stops Chemin Vert or Saint-‐‑Paul.
• Galeries Lafayette – One of the most famous department stores, a French equivalent to Selfridges. Location : 38 Rue de la Chaussée d’Antin – Metro stop Chaussée d’Antin – La Fayette.
• Avenue Montaigne – luxury shopping street with Dior (no. 30), Chanel (no. 42), Chloé (no. 44), Marni (no. 57), Nina Ricci (no. 39), Gucci (no. 60), Louis Vuitton (no. 22) and Prada (no. 10). Location : 8e arrondissement – Metro stops Alma-‐‑Marceau and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
• Kiliwatch – A popular vintage store. Location : 64 Rue Tiquetonne – Metro stop Etienne Marcel.
• Boutique Merci – Apparently ‘the Colette of the 3rd millenium’ ! Location : 111 Boulevard Beaumarchais – Metro stop Saint-‐‑Sébastien-‐‑Froissart.
Attractions
• Avenue des Champs-‐‑Élysées – Visit the Lous Vuitton world flagship store for some amazing visual merchandising. Location : 8e arrondissement – Metro stops Charles de Gaulle and George V.
• La Tour Eiffel – Stunning during the day, it is possibly even more beautiful at night. Location : 7e arrondissement – Metro stops Trocadéro or Ecole Militaire.
• Notre Dame – Paris’ cathedral. Location : 4e arrondissement – Metro stop Cité.
• Le Basilique du Sacré-‐‑Cœur – It has a stunning view across Paris. Location : 18e arrondissement – Metro stops Abbesses and Anvers.
• Le Marais – One of the most beautiful districts in Paris (in my opinion), home to the gays and some great shopping! Location : 3e arrondissement – Metro stop Saint Paul.
Boites de Nuit (Night clubs) • Le Baron – Chic, popular and club.
Befriend the doorman. Guests include Bjork and Sophia Coppola. Location : 6 Avenue Marceau – Metro stop Georges V.
• Le Queen – One of the city’s best clubs and not strictly gay-‐‑only any more ! Regular events include drag and strip shows and theme nights. Location : 102 Avenue des Champs-‐‑Elysées – Metro stop Georges V.
• Barrio Latino – Closes earlier than most (at 2am) but offers a lot for your money. A mix of students and after-‐‑hours office workers. Location : 46 Rue du Faubourg – Metro stop Bastille.
• Le Cab – Ultra-‐‑modern, techno-‐‑house club near the Louvre. Beautiful people and trendy students can be found on the enormous beds. The door policy is super strict – do not attempt in a large group ! Location : 2 Place du Palais Royal – Metro stop Palais Royal-‐‑Musee du Louvre.
Restaurants
• Café des Musées – Have lunch at the Café des Musées, the neighbourhood bistrot frequented by foodies, models, artistes and true Parisians. Lunch formula = 21 euro, 40 euro a la carte. Location : 49 Rue de Turenne – Metro stop Chemin Vert.
• Carette – Have breakfast at the Carette tea salon (not cheap at 7 euro a croissant, but an experience !) Location : 25 Place des Vosges – Metro stop Trocadéro.
• Café de Flore – One of the most famous Cafés in Paris, though pricey. Location : 172 Boulevard Saint-‐‑Germain – Metro stop Saint-‐‑Germain-‐‑des-‐‑Prés.
• Café Charlot – Have breakfast at the Café Charlot, a new-‐‑age Flore. Location : 38 Rue de Bretagne – Metro stops Filles de Calvaire and Saint-‐‑Sebastien-‐‑Froissart.
Night clubs cont.
• Les Bains – Formerly a Turkish bath house (could you guess it from the name ?), it now plays host to models, Hollywood stars and trendies. A great mix of music, guarantee entry by eating in the Thai restaurant upstairs. Location : 7 Rue du Bourg-‐‑Abbe – Metro stop Etienne Marcel.
• Le Batofar – A club inside a ship permanently moored on the bank of the Seine. Music includes live bands as well as house and techno DJs. Popular so be prepared to wait. Location : Facing 11 Quai François Mauriac – Metro stops Quai de la Gare and Bibliothèque F. Mitterrand.
Musées (Museums)
• Centre Pompidou – The museum of modern art in Paris, with an award winning construction involving its entire functional workings on the exterior. Location : 4e arrondissement – Metro stops Rambuteau and Hôtel de Ville.
• Musée d’Orsay – A converted railway station with many Impressionist works. Location : 7e arrondissement – Metro stops Solferino and Musée d’Orsay.
• Louvre – Some of it’s most famous works include the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Situated by the Seine River. Free for 18-‐‑25 year old members of the EU. Location : 1e arrondissement – Metro stop Palais Royal-‐‑Musée du Louvre.
• Musée de la Mode et du Textile – 90,000 pieces of fashion memorabilia spanning over three centuries. Location : 1e arrondissement – Metro stop Palais Royal-‐‑Musée du Louvre.
Tips & Getting Around
• Metro & RER – The easiest, cheapest and fastest way of getting around. It runs every day from 5:30am to 1:15am during the week and until 2:15am on weekends. Buy a carnet of 10 tickets split between yourself and a friend.
• The pretty little ‘typical Parisian’ cafes and bistros that you see will often be extremely pricey due to tourist locations. Furthermore, they can catch you out with hidden menu prices -‐‑ I have been charged 20 euro for a tiny glass of coke before. To keep food cost minimal (and clothes cost maximal!) stick to French food chains Paul and Brioche Dorée.
• When entering a store, always greet the shopkeepers with a ‘Bonjour’ – it is a matter of principal in France.
