Principal’s Report

Dear Parents, Carers & Community Members

Music Count Us In

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of watching our students take part in a wonderful music event. The annual Music Count Us In

event took place at 12:30 with schools across Australia simultaneously performing the song “We Are” which was created

especially for the event. It was great to see our students having so much fun singing and performing the song on the day.

A big thank you to everyone who helped out with the sausage sizzle on Thursday. Your help was much appreciated by all.

P&C Supports our Students

Our P&C may be a small group however they work hard to give back to the students of Leeton Public School. Last meeting the

P&C donated money to reinvigorate the School Vegie garden. Funds will go towards the purchase of raised garden beds which

will be planted with seasonal vegetables and herbs which can then be used in the new kitchen. The Kitchen, which the P&C

received a grant towards will be started in coming weeks after the NSW DoE Assets completed the pre planning.

I ask that you support the P&C through the purchase of raffle tickets in the Major raffle for 2019.

Parents Tell Them From Me Survey

A big thank you to all of our parents who took the time to complete the 2019 Parent surveys. It is important that parents have

the opportunity to give feedback about the school. This feedback helps shape our future planning and determine where to next.

The survey includes seven separate measures, which were scored on a ten-point scale. The scores for the Likert-format

questions (i.e., strongly agree to strongly disagree) have been converted to a 10-point scale, then averaged and reported by

question and by topic. A score of 0 indicates strong disagreement; 10 indicates strong agreement; 5 is a neutral position (neither

agree nor disagree).

An overview of the survey results can be seen below.

Over the coming weeks we will be analysing the survey and looking at ways in which we can improve at LPS to further support our students.

Last Monday we drew the winning name for participating in the survey. Our winner was BONNIE S-D. Bonnie received a $25.00 Voucher to spend at the Canteen or Bookfair.

Coming up at LPS

A reminder to all parents that this time of the year is extremely busy with many events scheduled. Events are listed on the Calendar on this newsletter along with the calendar on the school website.

Learn To Swim

The Learn to Swim program for identified swimmers Years 2-6 will commence Monday November 25 and continue for two weeks.

Presentation Day – Tuesday December 10th

Presentation Day will take place in the MPC at Leeton High School on Tuesday December10 commencing at 10am sharp. Parents are asked to be in the hall and seated prior to this time.

Platinum Awards

On Monday 2nd December, we will be holding our last Platinum Assembly for 2019 at 2:30pm in the school hall in conjunction with our usual assembly. This will be followed by a luncheon for Platinum students at Benvenuti at a date to be confirmed. Parent letters will be sent home this week.

As this will be the last Platinum assembly for the year, if your child has 7 diamond awards, please ensure they are in to the office ASAP.

A reminder that students who arrived at Leeton Public School after kindergarten only need the following number of Diamond awards by the end of Year 6 to qualify for Platinum.

Year 1 – 6 Diamond awards

Year 2 – 5 Diamond awards

Year 3 – 4 Diamond awards

Year 4 – 3 Diamond awards

Year 5 - 2 Diamond awards

Year 6 – 1 Diamond award

HEAT

Now that the weather has begun to warm up I would like to assure all parents that we take appropriate precautions. During hot weather we are enforcing “no hat - play in the shade” and encouraging all students especially the younger ones to drink water. All teaching spaces are air-conditioned and students will be encouraged to play under the COLA' and in the air conditioned halls during breaks when it is extremely hot.

Whilst our learning spaces are air-conditioned in such periods of prolonged extreme heat the spaces do become hotter, especially in the older Primary buildings. If rooms become too hot students will have time in a cooler area of the school. Please be aware that all staff use the air conditioners in the classroom and that these have just recently been serviced.

Please ensure that your child brings in a water bottle which they can refill regularly at the bubblers.

As always I encourage open channels of communication between the home and school. Parents are encouraged to contact the school office to make an appointment to discuss any matters regarding their child's education with the relevant teacher or Assistant Principal.

Chess Competition (LCOPS)

Last Friday, Leeton Public School hoisted the 2019 Leeton Community of Public Schools (LCOPS) Chess Competition. We were represented by 12 LPS students at the event: Mathew I, Tom C, Lorenzo I, Daniel B, Max G, Vincent F, Jaxon J, Brielle B, Sebastian C, Kipling D, Willis B and Logan D. Students from Parkview Public School, Wamoon Public School and Yanco Public School also attended to complete the 33 total participants at the event.

After each round, the winning player continued through the knockout format until we had our semi-finals set. Leeton Public School’s Tom C and Lorenzo I each faced an opponent from Parkview Public School. Unfortunately neither Tom or Lorenzo advanced into the final, which placed Charlie W and Jaden R against each other, with Jaden of Parkview being declared the Grand Champion.

While each round was being played, all the students either continued through the knockout tournament or played against another competitor who had already been eliminated. Throughout the continuous play, all the students developed a much clearer understanding of the piece names, their movements and the use of check and check mate.

All the students are to be congratulated for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship and manners throughout the day. It was excellent to see their skills develop alongside new friendships developed with students from other local schools.

Thankyou! A very big thank you to Mr and Mrs McGrath for helping us to tidy

up the garden in the Infants. It was a very big job and the garden is

looking neat and tidy now.

We appreciate you both giving up your time to make

our school look beautiful.

Woolworths Earn & Learn Promotion

It was very exciting today, when our SRC students took delivery of our new headphones which were earned through the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion. Thank you to all families for supporting our school by donating their stickers. We are very appreciative to Leeton Woolworths and Sarah for delivering these headphones, which will be used by all students to enhance their learning opportunities.

Learn to Swim/ Water Survival Challenge

Last week all students in Years 2 to 6 will brought home either a Learn to Swim or Water

Survival Challenge note.

Learn to Swim notes (blue) have gone to all Year 2 children regardless

of ability. Those who are already competent swimmers will practise a range of strokes

and work on building stamina. Children in years 3 to 6 who cannot confidently swim 50m

freestyle will also receive a Learn to Swim note. I have used last year’s records to

determine who should attend. If your child had further lessons last year and can now

swim 50m please request a Water Survival note instead.

If there is any parent of a Yr3 to 6 student who thinks their child needs further skill

practice, even if they can just make the 50m, feel free to request a space in our Learn

to Swim program.

Dates: Learn to Swim will be daily for two weeks - 25th November to 6th December.

Cost: $57.00 covering bus fare and pool entry. $22.00 for bus fare only for Season Ticket holders.

Water Survival Challenge notes (yellow) have gone home to children in years 3 to 6 who can

confidently swim 50m freestyle, without stopping or losing stroke shape, for testing. This assessment is because we need to

know who will be allowed access to the 50m pool at Narrandera for our end of year free swimming day. Children will also be

tested by the lifeguards at Narrandera on our party day.

Page 9: LEETON PUBLIC SCHOOL · The Learn to Swim program for identified swimmers Years 2-6 will commence Monday November 25 and continue for two weeks. ... French Lucy G, Makayla P Bland

Page | 9

Students who pass the challenge will also be taking part in three stroke correction and practice plus lifesaving drill sessions in

Week 9.

I recommend that all children about to take the Water Survival Challenge go to the pool a few times before they sit the challenge and swim a few lengths of the pool!

Date: Water Survival Challenge Friday 22nd November. Please note students attending School Spectacular will sit the WSC on

Friday 6th December.

Cost: $6.70 for bus fare and pool entry or $3.20 bus fare only for Season Ticket holders.

Details: Further details as to what to take to the pool, times attending and staff involved will be on the permission notes.
