B eirut was rocked by several weeks of mass protests known as the “You Stink” movement after trash pickup was disrupted in July 2015, when one of the city’s main landfills reached capacity and the government, paralyzed by sectarianism and patronage, was unable to make alternative arrangements. With trash piling up in the streets, protesters marched on government buildings, call- ing for officials to be held accountable and demanding reform of the country’s dysfunctional political system.
