BEFORE YOU BEGIN

In unit 1 you can take your first steps in learning Russian. From unit 2 onwards, you’ll find that the structure of eachunit is consistent. Each of the units has four parts:

Part A is presented by Misha Yegorov and Katya Semionova and gives you the KEY LANGUAGE ofthe unit.

Part B gives you the chance to hear Misha using the language in real-life situations in Moscow.You will learn to use this language yourself.

Part C reminds you of the KEY LANGUAGE and gives you the chance to use it and have thesatisfaction of realising that you can cope.

Part D reveals the outcome of the story you heard in part B.You should be able to understandthis without any help – although help is there if you need it.

Here is a summary of the main activities you will do to achieve efficient learning:

1 work with the book;

2 listen to the recording;

3 stop the recording to repeat or think;

4 use the book and recording together.

SYMBOLS There are four symbols used in this book:

the question mark indicates that you will find solutions at the end of the unit;

USING THE COURSE In each unit, the most effective way to learn is to start by working on the book and therecording together.You can then use your eyes and your ears to help you to understandand learn.The book and recording will take you step by step through the unit.You’ll seethat the English advice and explanations are always on the left-hand page and that theRussian they refer to is always opposite, on the right-hand page.

When you feel confident with the language, you can work with just the recording. Listento it as often as you can – in the car, on the train, while doing thehousework, for example.This repeated playing will help you to learnthe language and to become really confident and fluent. Sometimesyou can listen very carefully and repeat what you hear.At other times

you can just have it in the background while you relax or do something else.All this willhelp you to progress quickly in the fast lane to learning Russian.

THE ALPHABET The Russian alphabet consists of 33 letters. Some look the same as Englishletters and represent similar sounds, others look the same but representdifferent sounds, while the rest are unlike any English letters or sounds.Here are the upper case and lower case versions of the Russian letters:

VOWEL SOUNDS The hard (or pure) Russian vowel sounds are а, э, о, у, and ы. и, я, е, ё and ю are soft vowels and are pronounced differently depending onwhere they fall in a word. If a word begins with these letters, or they followanother vowel, they should be pronounced with a y sound. However, if theyfollow a consonant, the sound is softened to a very short i sound betweenthe consonant and the normal vowel.

CONSONANT SOUNDS Hard and softAlmost all Russian consonants have a hard and a soft version. If aconsonant is followed by a vowel, a “softening” vowel letter (я, е, ё, и, ю) isused to indicate that the consonant is soft. If it is followed by a consonantor is at the end of the word, the soft sign (ь) is used. The hard sign (Ъ) isused to separate the hard consonant from the influence of the following softsounds, but is rarely used in modern Russian.

Voiced and unvoiced consonant pairsThe voiced consonant changes into its unvoiced version if it is notimmediately followed by a vowel or another voiced consonant. Thishappens mainly at the end of the words. Try pronouncing the consonants inthe first row, and “switch off” the vocal cords to practise the changeover.

STRESS It is very important to pay attention to stress. If the vowel is not stressed,the pronunciation changes from o to a, and from e and я to i.

This page is a very general introduction to the pronunciation of Russian.The best strategy is to start PDQ Russian, paying close attention to thepronunciation of each word and how it is written. After a few units, youwill begin to feel more comfortable with the Russian script andpronunciation.

PART A: KEY LANGUAGE

1.1 MISHA AND KATYA Each unit is introduced by Misha and Katya.They guide you through the KEY LANGUAGE.You’ll also hear it being used by Misha and the people he meets in Moscow.

In this unit you’ll learn how to:– say hello (good afternoon);– say what your name is;– understand many useful Russian words and pronounce them the Russian way.

1.2 KEY LANGUAGE In each unit, you’ll be presented with the KEY LANGUAGE. Here it is for unit 1.

Hello! My name’s Mikhail (Misha). Hello! My name’s Katerina (Katya).Hello, Misha! Hello, Katya!

The Russian phrase добрый день can be used to mean hello, good afternoon orgood day.

Look at the Russian and make sure that you know what each sentence means.

Then follow each sentence in the book as you listen to it. Do this several times until youfeel confident with the sentences.Then play them again and repeat after each sentence.When this seems easy, try saying each sentence with each speaker, imitating the speedand the accent.

This is an excellent learning technique which you can use throughout the course. It canbe summarised as:(i) read and listen;(ii) read, listen and repeat after the Russian speakers;(iii) read, listen and repeat with the Russian speakers.

PART B: LANGUAGE IN ACTION

1.3 OVER TO YOU Now you can use the language you have learned. Look at the photos of people (a-d) andthe KEY LANGUAGE opposite and decide what each person would say to introducehimself/herself.To show you how to do it, you’re given an example (пример, in Russian).How would you greet Katya and introduce yourself? (answer e)

1.4 LEARNING STRATEGIES Though they may be pronounced differently, some Russian words sound like English ones.In addition, some Russian words are used in English. Recognising them can often give thekey to the meaning of a whole phrase or sentence.You don’t need to know every wordyou see or hear to understand the message. Decide how each of the photos of places onthe page opposite should be labelled, using one of these words:паспорт, театр, ресторан, банк.

Listen to how these words are said, and repeat each one several times. Pay particularattention to the way in which you pronounce the r in:– паспорт– театр– ресторан.

1.5 VOCABULARY You already understand a lot of Russian words, and you can prove it. Cover up theEnglish words below and look at the list of Russian words on the page opposite.Tick allthose you know, can work out, or guess.Then check with the list on this page, and learn those you didn’t know.You could copythem and their English equivalents into a notebook (the very act of writing them downwill help you to learn them) and carry it around with you, learning a few words wheneveryou’ve a spare moment. In each unit, you’ll be given a useful hint about how to learnwords. Use techniques which work for you whenever you try to learn new words andphrases.All the words used in the dialogues are listed at the end of the book.

1.6 You can now read and listen to some useful dialogues which come in later units.This willgive you just a taste of what you will learn. On the page opposite is a transcript of theseextracts.This is the English equivalent.

PART C: TEST YOURSELF

1.7 Now that you can really understand all the language you’ve met, practise saying it.Listen to the recording again as you look at the Russian text. Repeat each sentence, afterand then with the speakers, until you’re sure you’ve learned it and you can say it with agood accent.

Then try adapting some of the sentences you’ve learned, using other words you know, inorder to say different things.Think how you’d say:

2.1 WELCOME TO MOSCOW! Your teacher, Misha, arrives in Moscow by high-speed train from St. Petersburg. Herecords for us useful language at the railway station. First, Mr Petrov, a business manager,is welcomed by his company representative.Then Misha takes a taxi to his hotel.

In this unit you can learn how to:– say hello and goodbye, please and thank you;– attract people’s attention;– and, above all, make the most of a small amount of language.

There’s no magic wand that will enable you to speak fluent Russian overnight. Goodwill isimportant, though.You’ll find, as you hear Misha in Moscow, that saying please! will getyou by in a whole variety of situations, especially if you smile!

Note: in Russian, the word пожалуйста has a number of uses. It can be used in thestandard way to say please when asking for something. It can also be used when givingor passing something with the meaning Here you are.

Try to learn the Russian phrases, then cover up the English KEY LANGUAGE on this page.Look at the page opposite and see how much of the English you can remember.Thencover up the Russian phrases and do it in reverse.

LEARNING STRATEGIES Remember to work through every section with the book and recording as many times asyou need in order to feel comfortable with the language. In unit 1, you learned thesequence: read and listen, then repeat after, and then with, the Russian speakers.You cannow add a step to this.When you have repeated after and with the speakers, try to keepthe language in your mind while you do something else.Then try saying the sentencesagain, gradually increasing the time gap. In this way, the KEY LANGUAGE will become part ofyour long-term memory – you will have learned it! So, this strategy can be summed up as:

(i) read and listen;(ii) repeat after the speakers;(iii) repeat with the speakers;(iv) repeat without an immediate model.

Practise doing this sequence with the key Russian words and sentences in 2.2 opposite.Then test yourself. When you hear the Russian for the following, repeat it:

2.4 STRATEGIES It’s a good idea to train yourself to listen and to read in a positive way, picking out thekey words that carry the message, and ignoring what is less important.What is themessage conveyed in the three examples on the page opposite?

2.5 VOCABULARY You’ll understand better if you anticipate the words you expect to hear in a particularsituation and learn them. In this unit, you will hear Misha in the station buffet, at thenewspaper kiosk, taking a taxi, and arriving at the hotel.You will hear the words in thelist.Try learning these words now to make your listening easier.

One good technique is to concentrate on a word and try to ‘photograph’ it in your mind.Then cover it up and write it down from memory. Do this with all the words and thenwith 4 or 5 at a time.

A useful way of dealing with any words you find difficult to remember is to copy themout with their English meanings on a slip of paper, and carry it about with you. Use anyodd spare moments to revise them – in a bus, for example, or while waiting for the kettleto boil.

2.6 LOOKING AHEAD You’ll find it easier to understand people if you think in advance about what they’re likelyto say in certain situations. So, when Misha asks for a coffee at the station buffet, youalready know that he is unlikely to say I’d like you to bring me a coffee, please, butrather, A coffee, please. Note down in English similar phrases you might hear or need to say:

about their families.

In this unit you can learn how to:

It’s useful to be able to break the ice when you meet people. Note down examples ofsituations when you might want to do this (at a conference, for example). One way ofbreaking the ice is to talk about your family, or the weather. 4.11 GRAMMAR Words like my, your, his, her, our, their are called possessive adjectives. In this unityou’ve met моя семья (my family), моя жена (my wife), моя дочь (my daughter),мой сын (my son), ваша жена (your wife), ваше такси (your taxi). Notice thatмоя and ваша are used with feminine nouns, мой is used with masculine nouns andваше with neuter nouns.We also come across the plural form: мои – мои дети (mychildren). Be aware that when nouns change case the adjective endings also change toreflect the change – as in the question Сволько лет вашему сыну/вашей дочери?How old is your son/your daughter? (literally: How many years is it to yourson/your daughter?) At this stage, you just need to be aware of these ending changes.Using the words opposite, practise asking and talking about members of your family.

6.1 MISHA AT THEVOLKOVS’ Piotr Ivanovich Volkov talks to Misha about his flat, and says where he’d like to live.WithMarina, his wife, they go to the restaurant.

In this unit you can learn how to:– ask and talk about a house or flat;– say what rooms there are;– say whether you like it.

A useful point of contact with people can be made by talking about homes, and it’sinteresting to discover the differences in Russian attitudes. For example, in contrast tothe British, the Russians tend to have a small flat, usually rented, and some people alsohave a house in the country for summer holidays, called a “dacha”– which may not havemany modern amenities.A lot of new-style executive detached houses, called коттеджи(from the word cottage) are now being built on the outskirts of cities. Luxury apartmentblocks in major cities and towns are also becoming more common.

6.4 STRATEGIES One useful way of getting around the difficulty of not knowing a particular word orphrase is to paraphrase it. For example, instead of bedroom, you could say the roomwhere you sleep. (You could also reinforce it with an appropriate gesture, such asinclining your head onto your folded hands.)

6.5 VOCABULARY One good way to learn vocabulary and KEY LANGUAGE (e.g. 6.2) is to make some cardsabout the size of a credit card. On one side write the Russian and, on the other, theEnglish equivalent. Carry these with you and test yourself whenever you can by lookingat one side of the cards, trying to say what is on the other side and then checking.

7.4 STRATEGIES You can’t be expected to know all the Russian words you’d like to say. One way of gettinground this is to use words you do know to define words that you don’t.Try this out bymatching words or phrases from A and B, opposite.

7.5 VOCABULARY Another useful hint for learning vocabulary is to write each Russian word you don’t yetknow on separate slips of paper, and mix them up. Do the same thing with the Englishtranslations of the Russian words you’ve used. Practise matching up the Russian wordswith their English meanings as quickly as you can.

8.1 SUZDAL Larisa hires a car. Misha and Alexey accompany her to Suzdal, where they have a picnic.

In this unit you can – learn how to hire a car;– revise what you’ve learned in units 1–7.

In Russia you’ll find networks of all the main car-hire firms, such as Hertz,Avis, Europcarand Budget, and the procedure for hiring is much the same as anywhere else. Speed limitsare 40km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h or 110km/h outside built-up areas, and 130km/h onmotorways (110km/h when the weather is bad).You are not allowed to drink and drive,and must always have your driving licence and car registration with you.

8.4 STRATEGIES In previous units you’ve learned that a if you anticipate what you might expect to hear, or say, in a given context, you’ll find

understanding and speaking easier;b visual clues can help understanding;c you can ignore, or work out, words you don’t know;d there are certain rules which help to work out which English words are meant;e it’s useful to use gesture and facial expression to convey or underline your message;f you can replace or describe words you don’t know with words that you do.

Can you anticipate the language you would need if you had to hire a car? Sketch out adialogue in Russian, using as many of the strategies above as possible. Check against thedialogue opposite.

8.5 VOCABULARY

On the page opposite there are extra panels of vocabulary for the days of the week andthe months of the year.

To help you to learn these words, make a list of the Russian words you don’t yet know,writing the English meaning under each one. Cover up your list with a slip of paper andthen reveal each of the Russian words one at a time. Check with the English for themeaning.Then move your paper up the list, in the opposite direction, looking at theEnglish first.

8.11 GRAMMAR The part of the verb which in English is normally preceded by “to” (e.g. to live, to look,to be) is called the infinitive.This is the part of the verb you find listed in the dictionary.Most Russian infinitives, although not all, have an ending -ть, (-ти and -чь are the othertwo). Sometimes you will find that certain letters change in the verbal form – but you canguess which infinitive it came from!

Work out which verbal form matches which infinitive on the page opposite.
