LEADERSHIP is the PROCESS OF
INFLUENCING and SUPPORTING others to
WORK ENTHSUSIASTICALLY TOWARDS
ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES.
ORGANIZATION is the COLLECTION
OF HUMAN RESOURCES AND
PHYSICAL RESOURCES TO ACHIEVE
PRE-DETERMINED OBJECTIVES.
If organization of the structure
represents the ANATOMY of the
system, Management is the
PHYSIOLOGY. It is the Management
which makes the Organization to tick (or
work).
Management is simply defined as
MAKING OTHERS WORK FOR THE
ORGANIZATION. Hence leadership is an
essential quality of Management.
Normally people associate leadership
with known leaders like Gandhi, Nehru,
etc., but Leadership could be a
PERSONAL QUALITY, forming an
important component of your Pedagogy
(method of Teaching).
There are THREE distinctive ways of getting
others to do the work of the organization.
1. TRADITIONAL MODE-Authority
(POWER LEGITIMISED) is anchored in
birth -- Village Elders, Father in the
household, etc.,
2. CHARISMATIC AUTHORITY –
INEXPLICABLE BASIS OF AUTHORITY –
purely based on personal charm –
example, MGR.
3. BUREAUCRATIC AUTHORITY-
Bureaucracy, as conceptualized by MAX
WEBER, is a rational Organization,
another name for modern organization,
where AUTHORITY FLOWS OUT OF THE
POSITION.
F.W.TAYLOR, the FATHER OF SCIENTIFIC
MANAGEMENT, applied the scientific principles
like TIME AND MOTION STUDY, PIECE RATE
SYSTEM, THE BEST OF DOING ANYTHING, TO
BE CONVERTED INTO PROCEDURE,
MANAGEMENT BY EXCEPTION, EFFICIENCY as
the desired goal of organization, etc in the place
of Rule of Thumb practices. He believed in the
external motivation based on the Carrot and Stick
Policy.
But ELTON MAYO, Author of HUMAN RELATIONS
APPROACH, documented the overlay of
INFORMAL ORGANIZATION through the famous
HAWTHORNE EXPERIMENT.
Leadership is the personal ability of a person who enjoys THE AUTHORITY OF
THE POSITION, TO TAP INTO THE ENERGY FROM THE INFORMAL
ORGANIZATION.
Leaders differ from Managers. While Managers manage from the LEFT SIDE
OF THE BRAIN, which represents Logic, leaders lead from the RIGHT SIDE OF
THE BRAIN which represents EMOTIONS (Musical Listening – hearing the
EMOTIONAL CONTENT BEHIND SOMEBODY‟S WORDS)
Manager ADMINISTERS while leader INNOVATES. Manager is a copy while a
leader is an original. Manager maintains while leader develops. Manager
focuses on systems and structure while leader focuses on PEOPLE. Manager
relies on control while the leader INSPIRES TRUST. Manager has short range
view while leader has LONG RANGE PERSPECTIVE (MANAGEMENT IN
FRENCH IS PREVOYANCE (FAYOL), which means, LOOKING AHEAD OF
OTHERS). Manager asks how and when while leader asks WHAT and WHY.
Manager has eye on the bottom line while leader has EYE ON THE HORIZON.
Manager imitates while leader ORIGINATES. Manager accepts the status quo
while leader CHALLENGES THE STATUS QUO. Manager is a classic case of a
good soldier while leader is his OWN PERSON. Manager does things right
(efficiency) while leader does the right thing (effectiveness)
Stephen Covey wrote a book called,” THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY
EFFECTIVE PEOPLE”. These qualities are applicable to TEACHERS
AS LEADERS.
1. BE PROACTIVE:
While animals react, human beings respond
because animals are programmed but
HUMAN BEINGS CAN PROGRAMME
THEMSELVES.
OUR BEHAVIOUR IS A FUNCTION OF OUR
DECISIONS, NOT OUR CONDITIONS.
Reactive people are often affected by their
physical environment. If the weather is
good, they feel good. If the weather is not
good, it affects their attitude and
performance. But PROACTIVE PEOPLE
CAN CARRY THEIR OWN WEATHER WITH
THEM.
Teachers in self –finance
colleges have some peculiar
problems – their salary
structure, personal style of
management etc. These
constitute your EXTERNAL
CONDITIONS OR THE WEATHER
OR CLIMATE. Teachers from
government/ aided colleges also
have their problems.
But my advice to you is that DO
NOT ALLOW CONTENT
PLATEAUING TO TAKE PLACE.
There may be Position
Plateauing but these
circumstances need not rob you
of the FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
CONTENT RICHNESS.
Use your R and I –
Resourcefulness and Initiative,
“Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes
up.
It knows it must run faster than the
fastest lion or it will be killed.
Every morning, a lion wakes up.
It knows it must outrun the slowest
gazelle or it will starve to death.
It does not matter whether you are a lion or
a gazelle.
When the sun comes up, you better start
running! (quoted from the book,‟ THE WORLD IS
FLAT‟ by Thomas Friedman. It is a book you must
read). YOU CAN NOT BE HUMILIATED UNLESS
YOU PERMIT YOURSELF TO BE HUMILIATED.
2. BEGIN WITH THE END IN YOUR MIND:
All things are created twice. There is a Mental Creation (first
creation) and a Physical Creation (second creation)
While Management is doing things right, leadership is doing
the right things.
While Management is climbing the ladder
successfully and efficiently.
Leadership is putting it up against the right wall!
RESCRIPT YOUR LIFE STRATEGY - if you are money –
centered, family –centered, friend –centered, re-script them
into PRINCIPLE CENTERED.
If Habit One explains the freedom to programme your life, the
Habit Two suggests that you write your programme.
Your personal Visions Statement helps you to balance the
various demands on you.
3 .FIRST THINGS FIRST.
This is about Time Management. Leadership is
putting first things first. Management is carrying
out what leadership decides.
Discipline is derived from disciple, discipline to
a set of principles, disciple to a set of values,
disciple to an overriding purpose.
MANAGE FROM THE LEFT (left side of the brain
which controls logical activities) and LEAD
FROM THE RIGHT (right side of the brain which
represents emotions)
The First Generation of Time Management –
checklist which attempts to include the many
demands on our time and energy.
The Second Generation of Time Management –
calendar and appointment book which attempt
to SCHEDULE the events in the future.
The Third Generation – prioritization. Stephen
Covey advocates the Fourth Generation of Time
Management – ORGANIZE AND EXECUTE AROUND
PRIORITIES.
TIME MANAGEMENT MATRIX
URGENT NOT URGENT • I Quadrant –Activities II. Quadrant-Activities
• Crises PREVENTIONS
• Pressing problems PC (production
Deadline – driven problems capability) activities
• RELATIONSHIP BUIILDING
• Recognizing new opportunity
• Planning, recreation
• --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• III Quadrant –Activities IV Quadrant -Activities
• INTERRUPTIONS, some calls, Trivia
• Some mails, some reports, some Busy work
• meetings, pressing matters, popular Some Mail
• activities Time wasters
• Pleasant Activities
According to PETER DRUCKER, EFFECTIVE PEOPLE ARE NOT
PROBLEM-MINDED but OPPORTUNITIES-MINDED. THEY FEED
OPPORTUNITIES AND STARVE PROBLEMS.
PARETO PRINCIPLE- 80 percent of results flow out of 20 percent of
activities (provided you concentrate on Quadrant two activities more)
GOOD IS THE ENEMY OF THE BEST.
Architectural Maxim- Form follows the Function. Similarly
management follows leadership. If you can say „No‟ to the popularity
of Quadrant III and the pleasures of escape to Quadrant IV with the
help of the bigger „yes‟ burning inside you, you can lead yourself to
become a teacher with a difference.
Escape the tyranny of the clock and rediscover your compass -
Abundance Paradigm (KAIROS) rather than the chronos Paradigm (tick
of the clock). Compass is always fitted towards the North (principle-
centered).
TYRANNY OF THE URGENT- workaholics are very intelligent,
interesting, often witty and charming but they lack Inner Wisdom –
they are urgency- driven rather than mission-driven!
4.THINK WIN/WIN
You can not talk your way out of problems you behave
yourself into.
There are Four Possible Transactions.
I win you lose – you can not expect the loser to maintain
happy relationship with you.
I lose you win – It is a case of Masochism- the typical
style of a mother.
I lose you lose- this transaction need not be considered.
I win you win- This is the most desirable transaction.
This win /win situation is possible only when you INVEST
COURTESY, KINDNESS, HONESTY into the EMOTIONAL
BANK ACCOUNT.
There is a case of a teacher whose money purse was
stolen by a student. Instead of punishing the student,
the teacher punished herself with a lash until the student
voluntarily owned the crime. It was a basis of healthy
and enduring relationship.
There are six Major Deposits.
1.Understanding the Individual – creating a bond.
2.Attending to the Little Things
3.Keeping commitments
4.Clarifying expectations
5.Showing personal integrity – while honesty is
telling the truth, conforming our words to reality, integrity is conforming
reality to our words, keeping promises. When you defend those who
are absent, you retain the trust of those present.
6. Apologizing sincerely when you make a
withdrawal from the Emotional Bank.
5. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND AND THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD-
EMPATHIC COMMUNICATION.
Empathy is getting behind the skin of another and feel along with him - hence
the need for Empathic Listening.
There are several levels of listening
Ignoring – also known as Aggressive Listening where you are already ready
with a response which is not based on listening.
Pretending to listen.
Selective listening.
Attentitive listening.
EMPATHIC LISTENING – This is not the same thing as active listening –closer
to MUSICAL LISTENING where you listen to the emotions behind the words.
The amateur salesman sells the products but the PROFESSIONAL SALESMAN
SELLS SOLUTIONS TO MEET THE PERSON‟S NEEDS AND PROBLEMS.
Maturity is the balance between COURAGE and CONSIDERATION. Seeking to
understand requires consideration. Seeking to be understood requires
courage. Win/win requires a combination of both.
ETHOS is your personal credibility- the trust that you inspire- it is your
Emotional Bank Account.
PATHOS is the empathic side. It is alignment with the emotional thrust of
another‟s communication (musical listening)
LOGOS represents the reasoning part of your presentation.
Habit Five teaches us to consider the ethos and pathos before offering the logic
of the presentation (communication)
6. SYNERGISE – creative co-operation.
The essence of synergy is to value differences- to respect
them, to build on strengths, to compensate for weaknesses.
Synergy makes the output greater than the sum total of the
individual outputs.
SHARPEN THE SAW- the principle of self renewal- PHYSICAL,
SOCIAL, SPIRITUAL AND MENTAL.
PHYSICAL - Exercise, Nutrition, Stress Management
SOCIAL /EMOTIONS – Service, Empathy, Synergy, Intrinsic security
SPIRITUAL – Value Clarification, Study, Meditation
MENTAL – Reading, Visualizing, Planning, Writing.
Finally, teacher could become a leader if one were to follow this
formula –
CQ + PQ >IQ. Curiosity Quotient combined with Passion Quotient
would get you results higher than the results from mere Intelligence
Quotient.
