Your Leadership gift is working to create opportunities for a better life for all in our community by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life—quality educational opportunities, stable jobs, financial stability, and good health. United Way is able to create long-lasting change that address the underlying causes of community challeges. I give to United Way of Eastern Maine because I believe in what they do and I know my donation will make the greatest difference. That’s why I support United Way. Please join me with a 2009 Leaders’ Circle gift. Thank you.

leAdership GivinG Leaders’ Circle members are United Way of Eastern Maine’s most generous supporters and help us create lasting change in the community. Through Leadership Gifts of $1,000 or more, these donors set an example for others, enjoy a range of benefits and make a measurable difference in our community. We invite you to join them.

Why be a Leadership Giver?

Personal satisfaction – knowing you are investing in long-term solutions.Leading by example – inspiring others to invest in our community through United Way.Impact – by donating to our Community Fund, your gift takes on greater value by combining contributions with others to produce lasting change, right where you live. Accountability – knowing we have three volunteer Community Impact Councils reviewing applications and making funding recommendations on programs and initiatives that generate measureable results.

Our experience tells us that the best way to help the most people is to focus on the underlying causes of the most serious problems. Here in Eastern Maine, we are focused on critical issues such as early childhood education, caring for our elderly population and helping people in crisis.

This year I’m proud to be joining the Leaders’ Circle Committee as Co-Chair. I am

also challenging you to LIVE UNITED. What does it mean to LIVE UNITED? It means that as a group of leaders we recognize that underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all simply people. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. Join me today as a Leaders’ Circle donor, your gift will strengthen our community and contribute to a better quality of life for everyone. I think LIVING UNITED sound amazing!

We will continue to provide support for the basic needs and treatment of the most vulnerable among us, and work hard to impact the root causes of our community’s most pressing issues, preventing problems before they begin.

excellent mental and social stimulation to family members with memory loss.

A place for after school tutoring andmentoring while having fun.

A safe environment for individuals withhiv to seek information and resources.

My Friends Place has helped Jill to keep her father Laurent active and socially stimulated at a diffi cult time in their lives. Laurent’s family noticed he was experiencing memory loss about 10 years ago and sought services in their community to keep their father healthy. Jill has expressed great appreciation for My Friends Place, a day program for individuals suffering from memory loss and Alzheimer’s. My Friend’s Place provides a safe place for caretakers to bring their loved ones for mental activities and social engagement.

Kidcare America is an after-school program in Lincoln, Maine offering students social, mental and physical opportunities to grow and thrive. When Theresa came to Kidcare she was shy and uncertain of herself. Today, when friends and family describe Theresa you’ll hear “she is a very smart girl”, “now when she reads she can answer questions” and “she enjoys helping others”. Kidcare America aims to help children like Theresa grow to be strong adults and active citizens.

Jean and her son Tim both have HIV. Throughout the last 17 years, Eastern Maine AIDS Network (EMAN) has helped them to be healthy contributing citizens of Eastern Maine. EMAN connected Pat and Jean with doctors to ensure healthy living with HIV. EMAN also provided supportive staff when the family needed someone to talk to about living with HIV. Pat, Jean and Tim have given back by volunteering to help with the student education group SAFER, serving on the board of directors, helping in the food pantry and walking in the annual AIDS Walk.

I was personally helped by the United Way. I was able to afford to finish college because of a United Way funded day care center, so I’ve always appreciated how the United Way can help people get on their feet enough to get an education. Since then I’ve been a big supporter of the United Way.

The importance of giving back to the commu-nity was taught to me at a very young age by my father. There are so many worthy causes in the community – supporting them through the United Way insures the highest needs are met first. I have been a loaned executive, chaired the campaign and chaired the board. I am sold.

Our gift helps to meet community needs. My wife and I both feel very committed to United Way of Eastern Maine. Our 10 years in Maine

have given us so much – we often comment that it has been the best 10 years of our lives. Supporting United Way is just one way we can give back to a community that has meant so much to us.

I was born and raised in this area and believe in working together with the United Way to help with the difficult issues and challenges facing our community every day. You never know when you or a family member might need the services of a partner agency. The United Way is my charity of choice and I am proud to join with others to make a difference in our community.

United Way of Eastern Maine Endowment

We know that the issues we struggle with today are not necessarily the ones we’ll see tomorrow. United Way of Eastern Maine’s annual campaign makes a positive difference in today’s needs in our community, while the Endowment provides a long-term base of support to meet the ever-changing needs of the future.

We invite you to join us in this endeavor. There are several different ways to establish a legacy, each with its own unique benefits. Expert advice and thoughtful decisions will produce wonderful benefits for you and your family while leaving a legacy for the Eastern Maine Community.

You can ensure your annual campaign gift continues in perpetuity by endowing it. Make a gift to the Endowment. The Katherine Dolley, G. Peirce Webber and Herbert E. Sargent funds are examples of endowed funds that will provide United Way of Eastern Maine with security during uncertain economic times and with funds to invest to meet changing needs.

Consider making a planned gift. There can be many advantages to you and your heirs in making a planned gift to United Way, including realizing substantial income, capital gains, inheritance and tax savings benefits.

Include United Way in your estate plans. Naming United Way in your will is one of the easiest ways to make a lasting expression of your charitable interest.

Become a Forever Fund Member. The Forever Fund honors those who have made a lifetime commitment to the United Way of Eastern Maine by including our organization in their wills or estate plans. Members exemplify United Way’s commitment to building a better community. They also set a new standard in the power of philanthropy. If you have included us in your will, thank you! Please tell us so we can recognize you as a member of the Forever Fund.

Consider a Gift of Stock. Please consult with your personal financial advisor to see if a gift of appreciated securities makes sound financial sense for you.

For information on any of these opportunities, please call the United Way of Eastern Maine at 207-941-2800. Thank you.
