Gifts with a personal touch this Christmas

TAKE heart if you’re tiringof the annual buying-festthat is today’s Christmasand yearn for a morehomely celebration

reminiscent of days gone by.This year, it’s ultra-fashionable to

take a “crafty” approach to theseason and make personal gifts anddecorations.

Getting down to a session ofsewing or gluing isn’t just fun and agreat way of involving children inthe preparations, but it’ll also savethe pennies. And the results – oozingeffort and imagination – are bound tocharm.

“The sense of nostalgia is palpablethis year, with many people turningto traditional ornamentation andcraft-making techniques to decoratetheir homes,” says Gavin Wardell, haberdashery expert at John Lewis, which has a selection of festive craftkits and materials.

“There’s a real enthusiasm formaking seasonal touches – whetherit’s simple paper decorations, colourful hanging baubles, crackersor wreaths and garlands inspired bynature.”

Making vintage-style pieces is apassion of mother-of-three SarahMoore, whose new book, HomemadeGifts Vintage Style, has many festiveprojects included in its inspiringselection.

“Christmas is the perfect time tomake something special, whether it’screating a home-made gift, like bulbsplanted in a pretty, old teapot orantique bowl, or making apersonalised stocking or vintage-style tree bauble,” says Moore.

Choose one of her simple festiveprojects – then sit back and wait forthe compliments!

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGYou will need:■ Large piece of woollen blanket■ Contrasting vintage fabric (orfelted woollen fabric for appliques)■ Embroidery threads■ Embroidery needle■ Sewing machine (optional)■ Tailor’s chalk■ Pins■ Length of ribbon■ Little bits of sparkle, buttons orpom-poms, if desired

STEP ONE: Start by making atemplate. Draw one freehand onnewspaper or draw around thelargest pair of Wellington boots thatyou have in the house and then addquite a few centimetres all around.Cut out the shape.

STEP TWO: Blankets are perfectfor this project as they have a helpful

finished edge already. If the blanketis different on the front and the back, place it right-side down. Pin the topof the stocking template along thefringed or finished edge of blanketand chalk around it to make thesewing line.

Remove the template and cut outthe stocking shape about 2cm outside

that line. Turn the template over, chalk a mirror image of the shape onthe blanket and cut it out the sameway.

STEP THREE: If you want to addapplique decorations to thestockings, now is the time to sewthem on. Simplicity is best, so choosestrong Christmas shapes such as

baubles or gifts, or thestocking recipient’s name orinitials, and cut themfrom vintage fabrics orfelted wool. Or cutpocket shapes frommore of the blanketand sew them on tothe stocking to holdextra special littlepresents.

STEP FOUR: Pinthe appliques inplace, ensuring theydon’t stray over thesewing line or theywill disappear into theseam. Either hand-sewall around the edges withblanket stitch, ormachine-sew them on usingthe zigzag setting.
