Bringing flower power into your home

FLOWERS were oncereserved for specialoccasions. Now, they’reconsidered just as muchan essential accessory as

cushions, throws or bric-a-brac,and certainly aren’t confined to ashow-off bouquet in the livingroom.Floral artists have shown us themagical power of blooms to instantlytransform rooms. Whether it’s asingle flower in a simple container oran array of exotic buds in astatement vase, these touches havehelped foster our ever-growingpassion.

“I love the fact people are realisingevery room in the house can benefitfrom flowers, and are aware theyliterally bring spaces alive,” saysJane Packer, renowned floral artistwhose new book, At Home WithFlowers, bursts with inspiring ideasand easy-to-follow display tips.

“Flower arranging doesn’t have tobe complicated, so don’t worry aboutfollowing rules or needing specialskills,” she urges. “All you reallyneed is imagination, an eagerness toexperiment and an ability to seebeyond the norm.”

Flowers, she demonstrates, can bea welcoming touch in a hall, bringcolour to bedrooms and bathrooms, enhance a kitchen and dress a livingroom.

“At home I turn to the same oldfavourites time and time again.Dramatic, luxurious red blooms, such as roses or amaryllis, perfectlyoffset the moody grey shade of mysitting room walls,” she reveals.

“It’s essential to select flowers thatco-ordinate with the other colours inthe room. Matching the colour of abouquet with the dominating decorshade in a space can look stunning.”

Her display suggestions include:positioning a bold, floor-standingdisplay by a large fireplace orfeature, such as a statement chair;enhancing a dramatic arrangementby standing it in front of a mirror;and using viewing surfaces, frombookshelves to coffee tables, asopportunities to showcase plants.

The scent of flowers shouldn’t beunderestimated either, points outKaren Watson at The Real FlowerCompany, specialists in bouquets andarrangements.

“Flowers don’t just have visualbeauty; scent can be as essential tothe experience and impact of a floraldisplay, and evoke memories.

“The addition of a few sprigs ofrosemary, lavender or garden mint, often in abundance in many a

garden, can make a remarkabledifference to an arrangement. Thistime of year brings the wonderfularomas of garden roses and thesweetest smell of sweet peas.”

VIVID VASESDon’t restrict yourself to traditionalvases, advises Karen Watson.

“Think outside of the box – orvase! If a container can hold water, itcan hold your blooms! Think old tins, glass bottles, jam jars and decorativecrockery.

“Consider what you want toachieve with your display, whetherit’s a ‘fresh from the garden’ naturaland wild arrangement, or a morecontrolled, simple yet dramaticfeature.”

PICK OF THE BUNCH: Capturethe country farmhouse style with

jugs to show off a collection ofblooms. Pastel-coloured Jugs, £5.99each, or Galvanised Jugs embossedwith a heart motif, start from £12.99,both from The Contemporary Home.Bouf ’s quirky Canter Lever Vase

Bookend incorporates a delicateglass bud vase, £25.

START SMARTChoosing the right container for theright arrangement is vital, says

Packer: “Both should be sympatheticto each other to create aharmonious whole. Simpleflowers work well indecorative vases and viceversa.

“A clever choice ofcontainers can result insome fantastic effects andallow you to use fewerflowers.”

Tall cylindrical vases suitlong-stemmed blooms suchas an amaryllis or lilies, sheadvises, while low, tank-shaped receptacles suitshort-stemmed flowers.

Classic flared-shape vaseshold a large quantity offlowers, while dainty little budvarieties are ideal for singleblooms.

THE FIRST CHOICE FOR NEW HOMES

In association with

Bringing flower power into your home

“I love to cluster anumber of small vases

together, each holdingjust one or two

stems. This looksfresh andmodern, andgives great valuefor money, since

you don’t need asmany flowers.”

PICK OF THEBUNCH: Left, Arich-red LSA OdileCased Vase withdimpled exterior,£41, from RedCandy, would make

a statement. But forsheer elegance it’s

hard to beat The WhiteCompany’s Trio Of

Porcelain Bud Vases, £35, it’s perfectfor those solo blooms!

BLOOM ONIn order to prolong the life of aflower arrangement, Jane Packersuggests making sure all the flowershave their stems in water whenyou’re buying them.

“Avoid those with soft, floppyheads or petals that are starting tobrown at the edges,” she says. “Lookfor flowers with pert heads and somestems that are still in bud. Leavesshould be firm and a fresh greencolour – not yellowing.”

As soon as you get them home, remove any foliage from the lowerpart of the stem and re-cut the stemsat an angle to improve their abilityto take in water. Then plunge theminto a deep container.

If they come with a sachet offlower food, use it, as it provides thenutrients that encourage buds toopen and helps keep the vasebacteria-free, which will also helpthem last longer.

PICK OF THE BUNCH: Prolongthe life of a vase by choosing anunbreakable one, ideal if you havechildren and pets. Bodie & Fou has ablack Rubber Vase, £22, which isflexible enough to change shapeaccording to the type of flower.

FAKING ITThe days of naff artificial flowers

are long gone – now they look so realeven florists can be fooled, especiallyif blooms displayed are in tune withthe season.

“Summer is all about colour.Capture a traditional feel with pink,

cream or white roses which have a‘fresh from the garden’ look,”suggests Tiffany Davies, creativedirector at Bloom, specialists in silkflowers and artificial arrangements.

“They can instantly transform acountry kitchen table or window sill.Or turn up the heat and conjure amore Mediterranean theme withvibrant colours such as purples, reds, yellows and oranges in exoticblooms.”

PICK OF THE BUNCH: Bloom’sclassic arrangement of WhiteMoonlight roses in a glass bowl, £99.Alternatively, choose a seasonalbloom from its Flower Of The Monthcollection, presented in leaf-linedvases, £9 each.

The company are currentlyoffering a “buy two get one free”deal.

PRETTY PLANTSPlants can be just as appealing as cutflowers and are an ideal way to keep‘living colour’ in rooms, especially ifregularly buying bouquets is beyondthe budget.

“Decorative succulents only need alittle water every now and then tokeep them going,” says Packer.

PICK OF THE BUNCH: Conjure aholiday feel by displaying a plant orsome herbs in a delightful ceramicSandcastle Bowl, £22.70, from ShopOn Your Doorstep. Alternatively, anover-sized Tea Cup Planter, £169,from Bouf, could turn a plant into astar feature, indoors or out. If you’renot green-fingered, fake it withMarks & Spencer’s artificial WhiteOrchid in a pot, £55; Dunelm Mill’sHydrangea, £54.99; or Bloom’s bluegiant potted Agapanthus, £159.20.
