LCD Screen A LCD monitor (liquid-crystal display) is a flat panel

display, electronic visual display, or video display that

uses the light modulating properties of liquid crystals.

How is it used? LCDs are used in a wide range of applications

including computer monitors, televisions, instrument

panels, aircraft cockpit displays, and signage.

How does it work? A LCD monitor consists of a light source and a glass

panel which consists of millions of pixels which consists

of 3 sub-pixels which consists of two polarizing

filter(vertical/horizontal), a liquid crystal layer and either

a red, blue or green color filter.

How does it work? When light goes through the horizontal polarizing filter,

unpolarized light will be polarized horizontally. Liquid

crystal will then twist the horizontally polarized light to

vertically polarized light, allowing light to go through the

vertical polarizing filter.

By applying different amount of voltage to the liquid

crystal layer, the twisting effect can be varied.

How does it work? Human eyes retina can only detect three colours, red,

blue and green. In fact, the only “real colours” that can

be emitted by the LCD screen are red, blue and green.

By adjusting the intensity of light of the subpixels, the

LCD monitor actually fakes our brain to think what we

are looking at is yellow.
