I have been watching news reports over the past few months noting that our animal shelters are at full capacity. e Town Lake Animal Shelter does not turn any animal away and is on track to meet their goal of becoming a no-kill shelter by 2012. Here is a quote from their web site: “The Town Lake Animal Center surpassed the no-kill goal of 90 percent in June, matching its best-ever live outcome of 91 percent and staying on track for being the largest municipal animal shelter in the country earning No-Kill City status. We continually strive to reduce our euthanasia numbers. In March 2010, the Austin City Council passed a resolution with the goal of making Austin a no-kill city by 2012, which means a 90% live animal outcome rate.” While they always need donations and support, the extreme heat and cold make their needs even greater. I would like to ask each of you to bring a donation to the next general neighborhood meeting on Tuesday, October 18th. I will take the donations to the animal shelter following the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, email me and we’ll make other arrangements. Dear Neighbors,MarkYour Calender

On any given day, if you take a trip to Oak View Park, you will see a variety of dogs enjoying a stroll with their owners. As a dog owner myself, I utilize the park several days a week to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. All three of my dogs are rescue dogs and I have rescued several cats in the past as well. Judging by the number of dogs I see in our neighborhood, it looks like many of you have done the same. I have a soft spot for our local shelters and the hard work that they do.

I have been watching news reports over the past few months noting that our animal shelters are at full capacity. The Town Lake Animal Shelter does not turn any animal away and is on track to meet their goal of becoming a no-kill shelter by 2012. Here is a quote from their web site:

“The Town Lake Animal Center surpassed the no-kill goal of 90 percent in June, matching its best-ever live outcome of 91 percent and staying on track for being the largest municipal animal shelter in the country earning No-Kill City status. We continually strive to reduce our euthanasia numbers. In March 2010, the Austin City Council passed a resolution with the goal of making Austin a no-kill city by 2012, which means a 90% live animal outcome rate.”

While they always need donations and support, the extreme heat and cold make their needs even greater. I would like to ask each of you to bring a donation to the next general neighborhood meeting on Tuesday, October 18th. I will take the

donations to the animal shelter following the meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, email me and we’ll make other arrangements. Here is a list of items they need:

“The following items are needed to help animals currently at the animal shelter or may be distributed to partner organizations or pet owners in need:

Typhus AlertTyphus illness has been in the Austin area since 2008. Typhus

symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches and pains and, in some cases, a rash. This disease is transmitted from infected fleas and is not spread from person to person.

Typhus is treatable with antibiotics and early treatment can lessen the severity of disease. To promote awareness and prevention of typhus, the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department offers the following information and tips:

• Use effective and safe flea control measures to ensure your pets, yard and home is flea free.

• Eliminate food sources that might attract wild animals to your neighborhood.

• Keep your yard clear of heavy undergrowth and debris that might serve as a nesting place for animals.

• Limit your exposure by avoiding places that may be infested with ticks/fleas and wear heavy clothing (long sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes)

• Use insect repellants containing DEET.

More information on typhus can be found on the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department’s

website at:
