ProposalThe third project for photography asks us to explore and communicate light.

I would like to stay away from light drawings and photos of the sun. I feel that these two topics are too broad to successfully be used for this project in the timeframe we have allocated to us. I also would like to stay away from these subjects as I feel that they have been overused as a focus and excessively photographed.

Through brainstorming about light, I came across the spectrum of light. I personally find this spectrum very interesting as the human eye can only see a very small amount of light waves compared to technology. From reading and research, I have decided that I will communicate light through the use of the visible optical spectrum. I will be portraying light specifically through the use of the colour spectrum. I feel that I will be able to successfully communicate this theme with the constraints I have.

I will need to research what colours I will use and which colour reflect and show light the most effectively. I will also be researching other photographers that use colour predominantly in their photos to express light. This will help me refine my images.

Artist Precedents

Wilfried Hinz

I also looked at Wilfred for a different angle at looking at colour. He uses colour as sub-focus. I like the way that although the main objects are people and things he has also shows vibrant colour in his images. He also uses a lot of light in his images, even the back and white series of photos. I think that these images will help with the angel I take my photos and deciding if I want content other than colour and light in my finals.

Mike Grandmaison

Mike is a Canadian photographer that takes amazing images with great colours of Canada for the Canada Brand. These photos are then used by companies. I feel that with the experience that Mike has in photography I could look to him as a precedent. These images of his were using colour the way I would like to use it to show light. These images of his inspired mine and also helped me settled on the decision of using blue as my main focus of light in this project.

EvaluationAlthough I think that my first idea fit the brief of light well I agree with Linda and felt that it was too broad and would not be conductive to this project and the time constraints. For this project I was planning on having my time management to be well thought out. This did not go according to plan as I became sick the week before the project was due this meant that my planning and time was all out. I was not able to complete the project on time. This was a disappointment for me as I wanted to end photography on a high note.

I think that my second idea was successful and I am happy with the outcome of the photos. From last project I learnt that I should also make sure my settings on the camera are correct before shooting, this time I tested and corrected my camera settings before taking my final photos this meant that I did not waste time manipulating them.

I think my images and the photo shoots went well and i am happy with the outcome, I think that they fit my brief and show light in a abstract way. This is the look and feel that I wanted my images to have and to give the viewer. I used shadow and darkness to show the light and different gradients of light.

Apart from becoming ill which you can’t really plan for, the only regret for this project is that there was not sufficient time to explore my original idea. I was really looking forward to showing my view of the original source of light “fire”.
