Human  articular  cartilage  fragments were obtained, after  informed  consent, from  femoral  heads  of  five patients  with  hip  OA,  defined  by  clinical  and radiological criteria of  the ACR [Altman R et al.  1986]. These  had  all  undergone  total  hip  replacement  surgery

The chondrocytes were isolated and cultured for 48 hours in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium  (DMEM), dissolved  in Deionised Water  (DW) (controls DW‐DMEM) or  in one   of    three different   Vetriolo’s Water (VW) media, in which DW had been totally (100%) or  partially (25% or 50%) substituted with VW (after a filtration procedure)

All samples were analyzed before and afterincubation  with IL‐1β at a concentration of 5 ng/ml

Our study demonstrated  that Vetriolo water  (25% or 50%)  inhibits  the negative effects of IL‐1 beta in chondrocytes cultures.

We  may  hypothesize  that  this  inhibition  is due  to  the  particular composition  of  this mineral water and, in particular, to the presence of  iron.

However,  in  the  chondrocyte  cultures  exposed  to  100%  of VW, we  showed  a  significant increase in NO levels and in iNOS expression. These contrasting results, in our opinion, are probably due to the high concentration of iron in non diluted VW. 

We cannot exclude the effects of other mineral componentssuch as sulphate, calcium or  magnesium. At the moment, we are unable to explain the function of each mineral element present in the VW.

Further  studies are needed in vitro to confirm thesepreliminary findings and to further clarify the possible mechanism of  action of  this water in vivo
