Genest is pleased to offer a transferable lifetime warranty on the structural integrity of our paving stones and landscape retaining walls for residential use. This warranty protects against abnormal deterioration and/or structural failure of our paving stones and retaining walls under normal conditions. It also covers the abnormal deterioration of the surface due to exposure to de-icing salts. We certify that our paving stones conform to and exceed the most current specification standards by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) and ASTM Standard Specifications for Concrete Unit Pavers. We also certify that our landscape retaining walls conform to and exceed the most current specification standards by the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) and ASTM Standard Specifications for Segmental Retaining Walls.

If our pavers or retaining walls prove to be structurally defective Genest will replace the product at no cost. Replacement labor is not included. No guarantee of color matching is made or implied. Proof of purchase is required.

Paving stone Installation

1. Job Planning: Mark the area to be excavated. Provide room for a 4" compacted gravel base, 1" sand bed and 2 3/8" pavers. After excavating to the proper depth, remove rocks, roots and debris and replace with clean backfill material. Stabilize low wet areas with a layer of crushed stone.

2. Compacting soil subgrade: Compact your soil subgrade using a flat plate vibrator compactor (rented for usually $60 per day). Work in a cir-cular motion and compact the area at least twice.

3. Preparing your base: For patios and walk-ways, minimum base thickness is 4 inches. For driveways, please consult your paver supplier for proper installation. Like compaction of your soil, subgrade compaction on your gravel base in 2" lifts.

4. Compacting the gravel base: Use the flat plate compactor and work in a circular motion. Once your 4" of material is in place and com-pacted, check the finished surface. It should be hard enough not to allow the bedding sand to migrate into it.

5. edge restraints: Place your edge restraints on the compacted gravel base. Never place edging on the bedding sand. Secure the edging into the compacted gravel base using 10" spikes. Let the edging follow your patio or walkway perimeter design.

6. Placing the bedding sand: Concrete sand is recommended and should be spread and screened to a consistent thickness of 1” to 1 1/2".

7. Placing the pavers: Place your paving stones according to your chosen pattern. Chalk lines snapped on the bedding sand or string lines pulled across the surface of the pavers can be used as a guide to maintain straight lines.

8. Cutting pavers: Cut pavers should be used to fill gaps along edge restraints.

Before excavating the area for your new paver installation, check with local utility com-panies to ensure that digging does not damage underground wires or pipes. Job site access by delivery vehicle should be established so that paver material can be placed in close proximity to the construction area.

9. Compacting pavers: Use a vibrating plate com-pactor to drive the bedding sand into the joints to create the interlock. Spread dry joint sand over the paved area and sweep into the joints. Repeat the compacting and sweeping process until the paver joints are full. Finally, sweep away excess bedding sand. Protect your investment by apply-ing one coat of sealer and sand stabilizer.

Retaining wall Installation

1. Staking out the wall: Stake out the wall location to the lines and grades you selected. excavate for the leveling pad. The trench for the leveling pad should be at least 24" wide and 12" deep. excavate enough soil behind the wall for the geogrid reinforcement if required. Your dealer can review geogrid installation requirements.

2. Leveling pad: Place a good gravel-base material in the trench. The pad must extend 6" in front and 6" behind the first course of block. Compact the gravel base to a thickness of 6". Make sure it's level.

3. Setting your base course: This is the most impor-tant construction step in building a level wall. Begin laying your base course of block. Remove the rear lips so they will lay flat on the leveling pad.

4. Running a string line: Run a string line along the back of the base course blocks to align the wall units.

5. Placing the blocks side by side: Remember to begin laying block at the lowest elevation of the wall. Level front to back and side to side. Make sure your blocks remain level.

6. Back filling and compacting: When you complete your base course, backfill with gravel and compact. Make sure not to compact too close to the back of your base block.

7. Building additional courses: Clean any material off the block tops. Place the second course of block while maintaining running bond and pull each block forward until the rear lip touches the back of the block below.

8. Backfilling: Backfill with drain aggregate directly behind the block...Repeat this step until your wall reaches your plan height.

9. Placing the cap block: Brush off the top of your wall blocks. Begin laying your cap from the lowest eleva-tion with the split facing the front. Dry lay the cap until you reach the end of your wall. Cut the cap to fit where necessary. Adhere the cap to the block using a recommended concrete adhesive.

Other considerations: Drainage design and Geogrid reinforcement. each project is unique. Grades, water tables, soil conditions, level backfill and surcharge of slopes. It is our recommendation to consult your local dealer representative to review these considerations before construction begins. For walls over 4' a civil engineer must be considered for design and proper geogrid placements. Consult any of our estimating and installation manuals for drainage design and geogrid installation instructions.
