Behind The Name KO, Hungarian for stone, evokes the strength and mystique of the castles throughout Central Europe that still loom after many ages and countless invasions. Towering over terrain vast and diverse, these castles are a symbol of the human ability to interact with their surroundings in a profound way.

Since the beginning of civilization, natural stone has been the paramount building medium for structures of religious, social, and personal significance. Neolithic houses at Skara Brae with stone intricately placed, Notre Dame with flying buttresses supporting elegant walls of Parisian limestone, and the Empire State building encased with Indiana limestone, an edifice of American industry. Each one of these buildings is an example of the prominence of natural stone in premier buildings throughout history.

Who We AreWe are a quarry direct natural stone education and supply company. We support both design and application teams from concept to completion with access to thin and full depth veneer, wall panels, pavers, wall capping, and infinite specialty cuts and colors. We as a team are dedicated to the idea that natural stone is the preeminent building product. We are a natural stone concierge dedicated to helping you realize your design vision.

What We DoWith decades of experience working with natural stone on the design and build side, in both residential and commercial applications we have built relationships with quarries around North America. Our ever-expanding network of logistics and stone resources has allowed us an opportunity to create a system that connects, educates and implements the sourcing of natural stone.

What Makes Us UniqueNatural stone has been the building material for structures of preeminence for centuries, however during the housing boom of the late 1960s an inexpensive but inferior option was created, manufactured precast or faux stone. The proliferation-driven largely by cost differences-of faux stone reached a peak in the housing boom of early 2000.

Technological advances in quarrying techniques coupled with KO Natural Stone's quarry direct system of delivery make it possible to utilize natural stone in any project at drastically reduced prices, often to the point of near identical price point to the fake alternative.

This process also gives us great flexibility in choosing which quarries we work with. It allows us to focus on building relationships with those quarries that can guarantee the best prices, the highest quality, and the greatest level of dependability. It also insures that we can provide you with a large variety of natural stone from quarries across North America in many different cuts, colors, and patterns.

Natural Stone Veneers Natural stone, at a fundamental level reflects characteristics of permanence and elegance. With this it remains the most ideal product for the interior and exterior of your structures.

We offer a broad range of stone types, colors, cuts, and finishes to compliment any design implemented in residential or commercial buildings. Along with the traditional Full Stone, we offer Thin Veneer, which is a lightweight alternative to Full Stone and the quality choice over manufactured stone.

Stone and the EnvironmentAs a natural product, it is inherently earth-friendly. Natural stone currently offers many attractive, environmentally friendly attributes, including an enduring life-cycle, durability, ease of care and maintenance, recyclability, and quarry and manufacturing best practices.

One of the most grand and innovative desires in building and design over the last number of years is sustainable building. In 1998, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)—the nation’s leading coalition on sustainable building—established the LEED® Green Building Rating System™. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) is the most widely used rating system for green building.

This system defines standards for environmentally responsible, healthier, and more profitable structures, and awards points to new construction and major renovation projects in four categories:

• Sustainable Sites

• Water Efficiency

• Energy & Atmosphere

• Materials & Resources

Using natural stone shows that you take responsibility to care for the earth by actively striving to preserve, restore or improve the natural environment. Conserving resources, preventing pollution, and minimizing waste are some ways the stone industry is working to be eco-friendly through green building.

Constructing buildings in an environmentally-considerate way requires careful thought and planning. However, the payback from a green building far outweighs this price. Conventional building practices consume large quantities of energy and water, while generating excessive air emissions and waste streams. Moreover, indoor air quality

can be impaired when unhealthy building materials are employed.

Implementing green building techniques reduces impacts on the environment and human health during both construction and operation of a structure, as well as during production of building materials. If this harm is not reason enough to build responsibly, consider the financial aspect. Resource consumption and medical care can become expensive for the builder, the material manufacturer, and the employer of those working in the structure.

In order to decrease costs and to be good stewards of the earth, the Natural Stone Council (NSC) has invested much time in determining how to best represent the stone industry in the green building arena.

In its truest form, sustainability is a three-prong strategy involving environmental, social and economic requirements and that is how green building programs have been created.  Construction materials must have an environmentally preferable profile over their life cycle, from raw material extraction through the use phase and finally at the end of its application. The methods used to construct the building must be environmentally considerate. LEED is based on upholding these canons, and the NSC is working to credibly substantiate that using Genuine Stone aids in this objective.

We can especially do our part to contribute to responsible building by providing materials that have been quarried and processed in an environmentally-conscious manner. Further, we are exploring the implications of natural stone application during the use phase and beyond, particularly with regard to durability, solar reflectance, and salvage and reuse. This work addresses the entire life-cycle of Genuine Stone, substantiating on a holistic level the position of natural stone as a green building material.

Calculating Stone Veneer QuantitiesWhen calculating the square footage for flats and lineal footage for corners we recommended following the calculation system outlined below.

Flats: Calculate the total area to be covered by multiplying the Length (in feet) times the Height (in feet). Area = Length x Height = Square Feet (SF). Always purchase an overage of 10-20% (depending on stone type, cut or blend pattern, joint space preference, etc.) to allow for cut waste and selection of product which goes into the final installation.

Corners: Length of corner area = lineal feet (LF). One lineal foot will cover approximately 0.50 square feet (SF) of flats, which should be deducted from the quantity of flats needed. For examples: if you need 10 LF of corners, you may need to deduct 5 SF of flats from your order.

Natural Stone Thin Veneer is priced per square and lineal foot. Final prices will vary in different locations due to such variables as shipping costs, installation methods, and customization specs.

The ProcessWe are your natural stone concierge.

Beginning with the design process, we offer material specification and selection support to ensure that the aesthetic and economic demands for your project are met.  Our vast network of quarries across North America enables us to offer countless possible blends, many of which are priced comparable to faux stone.

After a blend is selected, we will ship you samples to confirm that the color/cut meets the criteria for your project.

Once the samples are confirmed and we receive the amount of stone needed (square/lineal ft.)*, we enter the shipping phase of your natural stone project.

Working with your onsite team, we manage the direct-to-site delivery of your material.  We are committed to ensuring that the material arrives on location according to the schedule that is approved.

This streamlined system of procurement and delivery was born out of the experience that our team has in the construction industry. We understand the myriad components that can impede and alter a project. Our service goal is to ease your burden so that you can enjoy the process even more.

Call or email us today to get pricing, a material consultation, or to have us schedule a 'lunch & learn' for your design firm.
