Before I ever joined

Laser Spine Institute,I was their patient.

Like you, Ive lived with chronic pain. I was an active and athletic person my whole life,

but my world changed the moment I injured my neck playing college football. As my pain

got worse it took a toll on my daily activities, affecting my work as well as my personal life.

I did everything, short of a surgical

procedure to stop my pain. Physical

therapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound,

traction and epidural steroid injections

all were only temporary fixes.

I met with four different surgeons. Each one had the same diagnosis and treatment. They

wanted to take a bone out of my hip, cut the front of my neck six inches, fuse the bone to

the vertebrae and place a steel plate and six screws to hold everything in place.

Thankfully, one week before my surgery date, I met a friend for lunch. He told me abouta spine procedure his wife had just undergone. It was minimally invasive and performed

in an outpatient setting. Upon hearing this, I immediately canceled my surgery at the

other facility.

After my procedure, I felt instant relief. My evening walk, golf game and exercise routine

no longer included pain. I was so impressed with the medical team, the procedure and my

incredible results that I became a managing partner for Laser Spine Institute and now Im

the CEO.

Q: What if I am on a blood thinner such as aspirin or Coumadin?

A: If you are taking any anticoagulants or blood thinners including, but not limited to, aspirin, Coumadin,

Plavix, Xarelto, Pradaxa and others, you must obtain written approval from the prescribing physician before

stopping these important medications. It is es sential that, once approval from your doctor is obtained, you

stop taking the medication(s) for the exact number of days prescribed b efore your date of surgery. Laser

Spine Institute has a Medical Care Screening Department guided by the medical staff. This department

will communicate with you by phone regarding details and questions about blood thinners and other

medications.

Q: What are my limitations after minimally invasive spine surgery, and how long will I be out of work?

A: Weight-lifting restrictions vary based on your procedure, however, your surgeon will provide you with detailed

postoperative instructions. Patients who have desk jobs c an return to work within two weeks, and patients

with physically strenuous jobs should wait at least six weeks, depending on the job. Each p atients surgery

and job differs; so, the time in which one may return to normal daily activities depends on an individuals

work environment and the type of surgery performed.

Minimally invasive stabilization procedures

In some instances, our patients can greatly benefit from a minimally invasive approach to spine fusion

called minimally invasive stabilization (MIS) surgery. Laser Spine Institute currently specializes in the

following MIS procedures all performed in our state-of-the-art, outpatient setting:

Decompression with an Interlaminar Stabilizationdevice

This procedure helps relieve pain associated with spinal stenosis. Through a small incision,

the surgeon first decompresses the affected areas, eliminating the source of pain. Once the

stenosis has been decompressed, the surgeon will insert a device, which will help to stabilize

the spine and maintain the decompression without limiting the patients range of motion.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)

This is a less invasive alternative to traditional open neck fusion. Its focus is to relieve neck

pain, weakness and tingling associated with herniated disc or degenerative disc disease.

During the ACDF procedure, the damaged disc is removed and implants are inserted to help

stabilize the spine.

Cervical disc replacement

A cervical disc replacement is a minimally invasive procedure in which an artificial disc

replaces an unhealthy vertebral disc.

Posterior cervical fusion

This is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed through the back of the neck. During

the procedure, two or more vertebrae are fused together to help relieve symptoms associated

with compressed nerves, spinal instability and deformity, and severe herniated discs.

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF)

This is a less invasive alternative to traditional open back fusion. Its focus is to relieve back pain

caused by spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc. During the TLIF

procedure, the damaged disc is removed and implants are inserted to help stabilize the spine.

Lateral lumbar interbody fusion

This is a minimally invasive spine surgery that accesses the spine through small incisions on

the side of the body. This procedure avoids disrupting or stripping soft tissue and muscle that

is required for other spine fusion procedures.

SI joint fusion

This is a minimally invasive procedure where the sacrum and the pelvis are joined. Laser Spine

Institute surgeons will perform the procedure through a small incision with the guidance of a

fluoroscope. Because there is typically limited mobility in the SI joint without the procedure,

most patients will not lose any range of motion.
