Butinett Situation Lett Favorable.

Kew toitk, May 7. Spocial tolegrams to Bradstreet's indicate that thegeneral trade situation is less favorablethan one week ago.' This is due mainiyto the partial paralysis of business atUhiuago as well as to the disturbed condition of the industrial situation at Mil'Kunl-.aei- . Cincinnati, St. Louis, Bultimore and elsewhere. la Chicago nobusiness of a wholesale character worthmentioning has been done and

are generally awaiting the settiementof labor troubles. Another

la the determination of the Chicago metal furniture works and lumboryards' employers to shut down ratherthan to accede to what they regard asunjust demands. A similar spirit isdiaplayed at Louisville. The movemantof merchandise at the leading citieseast and west has been checked by theIndustrial troubles. Eradstroet's

reDorls indicate that 325,000men have taken part in the short hourninvpinent: that l'iB.uW nave struct.ml that 15.000 have received conues.inn. without having to strike. Someir. (wi hovn uained their ends bv striking. The outlook for an early olearingof iha industrial aisturuanoes is notbright. "

BATÜEDAY EVENING. MAY 8.

LAS VEDAS' NEEDS, No. 8.On the 24th of this month the citi

zens of Lincoln county will vote onthe proposition of giving $100,000 incounty bonds to aid the projectedrailrosd from El Psso, Texas, to WhiteOaks, N. M. There is good reason tobelieve that the election will carry infavor of the railroad and that the lat-ter will be built, thqs giving to therich and growing county of Lincolna railroad outlet to the south.

To the thinking people of Las Vegas and particularly those who re-

alize the importance of Lincoln county as a factor in the trade, growth andprosperity of this city, this buildingof the El Paso and White Oaks roadis a serious thing. Should the roadbe built to White Oaks (and it cer-ta'nl- y

looks as though it will), LasVegas will necessarily lose anotherlarge slice of its most valuable andprofitable commerce. ,

With a railroad terminating atWhite Oaks, bustling and growingtowns will spring up along the lineand businesswill pour into these newpoints, not only from the immediatesurrounding country, but from theeast, west, and even from the north

. Not alone would the southern andmiddle Lincoln county business belost to the city forever, but the com-petition of trade would cause a .changein business even as far north as FortSumner in San Miguel county. Infact the topography of the country issuch that, even with all ether mattersbeing equal, the new outlet and trad-ing points would receive the preference.

Everything is not equal. EI Paso,by reason of the rival railroads centering there, enjoys and will alwayshave a freight rate from eastern pointswhich is proportionately the lowestof any railroad point in the UnitedStates. ' The projected White Oaksfeeder will be in the nature of a com- -

petingline with the Atchison, Topeka& Santa Fe Tailroad, as it will enterdirectly upon the territory of thatcorporation, and the consequence willbe that in order to build up townsand trade along its own line the WhiteOaks road will haul for mere nominalrates.

An old axiom is that some good canalways be found in the greatest evil, and while it may at first appear thatthe building of this White Oaks roadwill seriously injure the commercialinterests of Las Vegas, The Oazettrbelieves that the competition of thatroad will do more to build up and develop this city than any other possibleevent.

In the first place it must be consld.ered that without some extraordinaryevent things are veiy apt to go on inLas Vegas for the next ten years asthey have in the past five. The Atchlson, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad seemsperfectly satisfied to let well enoughalone and have things move as theyhave been heretofore. It would beunreasonable to expect the tailroadcompany to do more for Las Vegasthan it has already done, as its policytoward this place has always been extremely liberal. '

But when the Atchison, Topeka &

Santa Fe sees another and u rival roadcoming into what basso long beenconsidered its exclusive field (the ter-

ritory of New Mexico) will it notarouse itself and exert ils influence tobuild up and make important the fities upon its own line instead of permitting the wealth aud business ofthese cities to be absorbed by thoseof opposition corporations. Therelies the hope of Las Vegas for anawakening from the lethargy of thepast five years. The building of theWhite Oaks road will do more to ad-

vance the interests of this city thanany other possibility now in sight. It is time that we have a splendidcity. There are many good build, ings, more in course of erection, and a number contemplated. Realestate commands good prices, andpeople of a good class are locat-ing hers every day. We must notstand still, however, but keep a

Railroad Mattere. The train lust night was a very light

one.A change of schedule is one of the

things imminent in tbe near future.A special car with tbe United Slates

fish commissioners, en route to Cali-fornia, will pass through tonight.

J, II. Scott, assistant general mana-ger ot the Sonora road pasted throughon the regular train last night.

Trainmaster Rain was this morningassorting the stationery in his office.Tbe quantity would have sufficed tostart a little bookstore.

A Phillips' excursion for Californiawill come in from the east tonieht. They will lie oyer at the Springs tomor-row and their jotirney tomorrownight.

The train this morning was again alarge one. Ten coaches packed withpeople shows that the tide bas. turnedand tbe crowds of emigants are surgingback to the east. , ., ..' , .?

There are f jwer accidents on tbe LsVegas division. of tbe Santa Fe road, sosay railroad men, than upon almost anvother road of the same length In tbeUnited States. Tbis is the more re-

markable when it is considered thattbis is a mountain division. ;

Conductor Posey, ot tbe Hot Springsroad, bas given up the idea of dying. The fact is that Cupid Bad Hymen aremore largely filling bis thoughts just at

'returned tbis mornng from SanFran olsco. Tbey had a delightful timeand returned full of enthusiasm withret rence to tbe city of tbe (iolden Gatear ,d the lacd of tbe Setting Sun, Theyf ound California crowded to overflow-ing with people who bad gone out thereduring tbe time of cheap rates, expect-ing to find bricks of gold to be pickedup in streets-- of any California town, but who would gladly avail themselvesnow of of cheap rates to return to theirold homes. What many of these peoplewill do is a problem reserved for theunraveling alone of Inflnite Intelli-gence. Perhaps the roads will be com-pel led to do as tbey did a few years agoin Denver make special rales to tueeast to relieve the country of its over-plus of population. San Francisco isgrowing steadily, more by tbe improve-ment ot what is there than by additionsto the outskirts. Uue who bad been fa-

miliar with tbe city as late as ten yeariago, would find himself much. puzzledto recognize the tmsinws portious of tbeplace. Los Angeles is unjoying a won-derful boom in real estate. Hundredsof people are investing, paying; a siua'.lpart down and giving lions on the prop-erty, expocting to realize ton remainderout ot the property itself. It will be buta question of time, and with most ofthem a short time at that, when t(ie re-

alistic speculators will bavo most of tbeproperty back, and the purchasers willhave a wholesome experience for theirmoney. Our friends were right royallyreceived. Colonel Grayson having goneto California in 1848, and being a mem-

ber still of the Bohemian Club, tbeUnion Club, the Pioneor Society, thoRedmen, and a variety of other organizitions and secret societies, therecopiions given bun were frequent, and hearty. The ' Pioneer socleiy iscomposed only of those who went loCalifornia not inllur than 1840. Of theseone s.'njglu man, Jackson Jorden, was anegro. Colonel Grayson found bitn inwaut, despite the longtb of time he hadbeeu in the laud flowing with milk audhoney, and so brought bun to NewMexico, lie will at once be ensconcedas cook in tho Colouel's family. Besidesour party brought back a couple of freshsalmon, nicer being dressed weighingtwonty-uin- e and a half, and tbiriy-tw- o

pouud. These will graoe their Sjndaytabie. I he loss of Bancroft & Co., iuthe great lire of Friday night last, was1630,000. Mm. Grayson bad some$4,000 of valuables stored in the estab-lishment at tbi time for safekeeping. They too were lost. Fortun-ately Herbert Howe Bancroft,, tbe his-torian had, but a few months before, removed his imraeuse private libraryand notes for tbo History of the NativeRaces of the Pacific, Into an iron fire-

proof building, and these were saved. So this wondetful monument to Amen-na- n

uriilit arid enterprise will not hevery seriously disturbed by the fire, uur menus on tneir return received sohearty a welcome that at onoe tbey for-got California in the enjoyment of LasVegas.

An KtU Thai mella la Hcaren. The neglect of all sanitary regulations

on tbe part of many of our citizens, is amatter much to be reprehended. Hadwo not tbe most healthful climate intbe world, such criminal negligencecould but breed pestilence and death.Garbage and filtU of all kinds are(brown with impunity into the alleysand narrow streets, and out upon thevacant lots. Dead animals are allowedto lie in close proximity to frequentedhighways till nature removes them.A Gazette reporter bad occasion todayto pa-- s through au alley on the eastside, lvicg in one of the closest builtparts of the city, and the state of affairswas disgusting to behold. Tbe troubleseems to be upon tbe increase. It beingnobody's business to attend to thecleaning of the alleys and vacant lots, and the filth accumulating with thegrowth of the place, the question has atlength reached such proportions hs tostare us in the face, and to demand thatsomething at once bs done.

Qnlte a Trade.Robert Oakley has just negotiated a

very important trade for a Kansas par-ty. By this Leonard Blythe disposesof 188 head of horses, including his cel-ebrated trotting stallions. Brown Dickand Billy Smith bis driving horseBert and bis stallion Arabia. He getsin return sixty four high grade milchcows, an imported Guernsey bull, and athoroughbred Holsteln. Mr. Blycheintends converting the Tecolote ranchinto a dairy farra, which no doubt willbe found more profitable than the rear-ing ot fine borses. Another part of thetrade consisted in the exchange ot 135bead ot horses for forty-thre- highgrade and thoroughbred Galloways andshorthorns, valued at $75 each. ThusKansas increases her horse stock to thenumber of 823, and New Mexico gets inexchange 109 cattle of improved blood.A fair exchange is no robbery.

A more la the Illghl Direction.A committee of east side business men

will next Monday wait on the countycommissioners to urge upon them thenecessity of At onco building tbe Princestreet bridge. Let this committee atthe same time. lay before tbe commis-sioners the importance and justice ofmaking an appropriation for the eastside parks. Before doing so, however, let tbem also wait on the managementof the water works company. The im-pression is very prevalent that the priceasked by the company for water forthese grounds is a good deal too large asum, considering the publio nature ofthe enterprise.
