The world has changed. The physical world is complemented by

an ever-growing electronic, digital world which influences the

way people behave. Digitalisation is creating new methods and

challenging old practices. Next to new electronic innovations,

playing still holds as important a role in children’s lives as before.

Playing offers children and even older people a natural channel

to process feelings and events. When people play, there is

always room for creativity. It is also an opportunity to learn

how to show consideration for others and act in a group. When

it comes to physical exercise, playing is an important factor

activating children to move. Playing adds spring to their steps,

makes exercise a breeze, supports learning and improves their

concentration skills. Playing and moving together builds a

balanced life and future well-being.

Our society is currently facing the challenge of sustaining well-

being amongst children and young people. Lappset is responding

to this challenge by designing and producing solutions which

support well-being through playing and exercise. For example in

the Angry Birds™ activity parks, elements familiar from the game

world help imagination fly and encourage children to play and

move. Through our innovative and inspiring attitude, we are doing

our share to promote well-being and health amongst children and

young people to create a better tomorrow.

This catalogue focuses on Lappset Group Ltd’s playground

equipment. Sports equipment and furniture will be presented

in their own catalogues, which will be published later*. For

Imagine walking to the nearest park and taking in a

deep breath. Welcome to the great outdoors! Lappset

has already been here for over 40 years, acting as an

ambassador for joy and well-being. Launched by one

man’s enthusiasm and vision, Lappset has grown over

the decades into a global Group. But we are still a family

company and we respect our roots.

The Arctic, northern tradition of Lapland, is visible in

our products, but also in the way we take care of our

employees. The majority of our clear-lined, freshly coloured

products are made using the natural material of the north:

wood. The extreme conditions of the Arctic Circle also

provide us with an excellent environment for testing the

durability of our products.

This year, we are happy to present a fantastic amount

of new products. Most have been designed to meet an

individual need or request, in close collaboration with our

clients. We recommend that you sit and make yourself

comfortable. Get to know our product range and let your

imagination run free! And when inspiration strikes you, rest

assured that in us you will find an enthusiastic partner for

bringing your ideas to life.

Create surprise and joyTo summarise the company’s entire history, we have

always wanted to build comfortable surroundings and

provide users with an enjoyable playing and exercise

experience that also develops their skills, almost without

them noticing. For this reason, catering for various

age groups and their needs is an essential part of our

product design. User-oriented thinking also ensures the

safety of our products. Our clients have a unique access

to tailored products and personal design. This process

constantly creates new, innovative sets which are clearly

distinguishable from the ordinary.

We invite mankind outdoorsWith our bold, innovative designs, we inspire and

encourage people of all ages to exercise and enjoy

spending time outdoors. In order to ensure the best

possible results, we collaborate closely with experts who

are familiar with the needs of different user groups.

For example, the SeniorSport product range has been

designed together with physiotherapists to create

products that maintain the elderly’s ability to function.

Meanwhile, Lappset designed its Parkour Solutions product

range in close collaboration with the Parkour Academy of

Finland. These products are great examples of our new,

comprehensive product range. The Parkour Solutions

designs can be complemented with a virtual guide. The

users of our SeniorSport products are instructed by a

physiotherapist or other health-promoting exercise expert,

arranged through our cooperation network. Further

information about these product ranges is available in our

product catalogue, available in spring 2013, and on our

website at www.lappset.com

8 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.

Demanding conditions create a rigorous approachBeing a forerunner and surpassing the average are

characteristics not only of the design but also the

production of our products. Our operations comply with

the requirements of the ISO 9001 quality management

system and the ISO 14001 environmental management

system. Because we are meticulous about our production,

we require the same from our subcontractors.

For the benefit of the environment, commencing at the production stageThe most important raw material of our products is the

traditional material of the north: naturally renewable

wood. Grown slowly in extreme conditions, pine holds

against changing weather and hard use. Pine is also an

environmentally friendly raw material with calculated

carbon emissions of zero. We only use wood from PEFC

certified forests (Programme for the Endorsement

of Forest Certification). We have also minimised the

environmental impact of all our industrial processes. Our

goal is to transfer to metal-free wood protection as soon

as possible. For this reason, we are constantly researching

new wood protection solutions and looking for methods

which would suit our needs.

Keep the cycle going until the endHaving grown surrounded by Arctic nature, we understand

that sustainable design is both ecological and economic.

Therefore we take care of our products’ entire life cycle.

As a rule, our products are designed and created to be

durable. Their lifespan may be maximised with regular

maintenance. The need for large investments in the future

is eliminated by the possibility of replacing damaged

components with new ones. Towards the end of our

products’ life cycle, their friendliness to the environment

becomes more and more significant. We are proud to say

that all our products are 100% recyclable.

PLAYING BEYOND THE ORDINARY – OVER 200 NEW PRODUCTS!

PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest

Certification Schemes, is the most used forest certification

system in the world. Two thirds of the world’s certified

forests have a PEFC certificate.

PEFC promotes ecologically, socially and economically

sustainable forestry throughout the world.

Lappset’s PEFC COC (Chain of Custody) certificate

guarantees that the wood we used as raw material has

originated in a responsibly maintained Finnish forest.

The certificate is only awarded after an independent,

professional inspection and confirmation that forest

maintenance and follow-up of the wood’s origins are in line

with the international PEFC requirements.

FinnoOur classic, Finno, is the right choice for those in favour

of a soft look. Made almost entirely of wood, Finno

suits both parks and the yards of buildings. As our

oldest product group, Finno is also the broadest and

most versatile.

CloxxCompared to the playful Finno, the metallic Cloxx is

a true minimalist. The metallic structures and plastic

parts construct a light-weight whole which leaves

room for the imagination to run. As Cloxx endures even

hard use, it goes well together with Lappset Parkour

Solutions and Wall Bouldering products.

Interactive PlayCombining interactivity with traditional playing is

constantly introducing new, exciting products to our

product range. In addition to single, separate products,

our Interactive Play product range includes various in-

teractive elements which may be combined with other

products.

Halo – playable design

Although the world around us is changing, play remains

surprisingly unchanged from one year and even one

generation to the next. Our changing environment,

particularly in terms of visual preferences, is constantly

posing new challenges for the playground equipment

manufacturer. Lappset’s new product range, Halo, draws

inspiration from Arctic, minimalist design and provides a

new kind of play environment.

Page 11: Lappset 2013

11Copyrights and patents Lappset Group Ltd HALO – PLAYABLE DESIGN

The Halo product range combines wood, design and

technology to form a sustainable, inspiring whole. The

basic material is wood, processed and shaped to fit the

urban environment seamlessly. The visual harmony of the

products is created through carefully considered use of

details and material thicknesses. Features and functions

have been grouped innovatively, keeping in mind the

proportions of the overall product.

The Halo product range provides users with familiar and

safe but also new and surprising possibilities. In addition

to traditional functions, the products can be equipped

with a transparent climbing wall or the Drop Zone, a slowly

descending pole lift. Thanks to green technology, Halo

products are an invitation to play even after sunset: when

darkness falls, the products glow with light sustained by

solar energy.

All Halo product play functions have passed extensive

safety and usability tests. As with all Lappset products,

the Halo range complies with the requirements laid down

in the EN 1176 safety standard.

Page 13: Lappset 2013

13Copyrights and patents Lappset Group Ltd ANGRY BIRDS

Birds inspire movementGames in the Angry Birds™ activity parks are inspired

by characters from the popular game. Birds and pigs

peek from around the corners of the equipment, while

illustrations from the game create an impression of playing

in a giant game level. The familiar characters can also

surprise – for example by spouting a mist of water.

Lappset delivers the Angry Birds activity parks as

complete sets, including playground equipment and

characters, coupled with furniture that increases the park’s

attractiveness. Depending of the purpose of the park, it

can also include a café or kiosk.

Page 14: Lappset 2013

14 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.

The Angry Birds activity parks combine interactive and

traditional play to create a new kind of experience. Each

Angry Birds activity park is designed together with

the client. All solutions and equipment in these parks

are tailored according to the client’s wishes and needs.

new playground for your area.

COMPARE AND SELECT THE BEST

This catalogue includes a selection of playground

equipment included in Lappset Group’s product range.

Products for active sports, park and street furniture will be

included in a separate catalogue published later*.

Concise factsAs in our previous catalogues, playground equipment has

been divided into groups according to their functions.

This makes it easier to compare similar products and the

recommended user age.

The most noticeable change in this catalogue is the

concise presentation of products. One page now displays

several products, with the necessary information

presented in a compact table. The new layout makes

it easier to get to know our product range and make

decisions.

Fantastic amount of new productsWe are living in a record year. Our range of playground

equipment includes over 200 new products. For this

reason, the summary pages in the beginning of the

catalogue only introduce the largest novelties: a new

product group and the Angry Birds™ activity parks that are

already a worldwide phenomenon.

We have been producing playground equipment for various

special groups for some time now. These Design For All

products are clearly showcased in this catalogue. Just take

a peek at pages 98–101.

Our basic products are displayed alongside custom

products ordered by our clients and now available for all.

Special products have the letter Q at the beginning of their

product numbers. Please note that the delivery time of

these products is longer than usual, 6 to 8 weeks. If you

are inspired to design a product of your own, don’t forget

to contact our MyDesign! service. In us you will find an

enthusiastic partner in bringing your design to life.

*Our sports equipment catalogue will be

available in spring 2013.

Symbols on the product pages

SYMBOLS ON THE PRODUCT PAGES

Space required for the productThe space required for the product is symbolised by

playground equipment surrounded by a dotted line. The

space requirement indicated in the table includes the

maximum measurements of the product’s safety zone.

Note that the safety zone may be different from the

product’s fall zone, which is determined by other product

types in the area. Determine the product’s minimum space

requirement on the basis of the installation instructions

and other products at the installation site.

Safety zone (m2)The safety zone required by each product is symbolised

by an empty area marked with a dotted line. The safety

zone is given in square metres. The size of the safety

zone is always measured from the point on the product

where the user stands over 600 mm from the ground. The

safety zones of adjoining equipment may overlap as long

as the products are not of the type that create enforced

momentum, such as swings, roundabouts and slides.

Fall heightThe table shows the product’s fall height symbolised by

a character running on top of a cube. Fall height refers to

the maximum height to which users can climb and from

which they can fall. The fall height influences the choice of

ground material and the product’s safety zone. Note that

the fall zone must be at least 150 cm from the product’s

outermost parts, and may therefore exceed the safety

zone.

Product measurementsThe length, width and height of the product are

indicated in the table by a symbol representing a piece of

playground equipment surrounded by measurements. The

measurements are shown in the following order: length,

width and height.

Maximum measurementsThe maximum weight and length of product components

appear in the table under the weight symbol. The

table indicates the maximum measurements of single

components. In other words, the weight and length refer

to the product’s heaviest and tallest component, not the

product as a whole.

Installation timeThe time required to install a product is marked by a

symbol containing an adjustable spanner and a clock. The

installation time is the time estimated for two people to

assemble the product. The installation time only includes

the assembly of the product, and not ground work and

safety surfacing installation.

User age groupThe recommended age group is symbolised by children

running to play. The table indicates the minimum user

age. The recommended age has also been taken into

account in product design; if users are younger than the

recommended age, they will find it difficult to climb on the

product.

Switch It!DFAThis symbol marks all products which can be modified

through our Switch It! service. For example, you can

change the colour of the components or, in some cases,

the material of the wall elements. Further information on

the Switch It! service is available on pages 18-19 of this

catalogue.

DFA is short for Design For All. The design of all equipment

marked with this symbol takes the needs of special groups

into account. Children can access some of this equipment

independently, while others require some assistance. DFA

products have been compiled on pages 98–101 of this

catalogue.

Page 18: Lappset 2013

18 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.SWITCH IT!

Switch It! Switch parts, change the appearanceThe Switch It! service gives you the freedom to define

the appearance of the products. The service allows you to

remodel individual components to suit the needs of the

planned area or your client. A new, distinctive look can be

given to basic products of the Finno range by changing

the colour of the pylons and bars and the material of the

wall elements. On our website at www.lappset.com you

can test how altering the component changes the product

appearance.

You can easily recognise the products which can be

modified through the Switch It! service by the Switch

It! sign displayed above the product, and by the letter

M marked after the product number. Contact our

representative when placing your order to confirm that the

desired modifications can be made.

Changing the colour and the type of base of the metal

products is certain to give you products to suit the

intended area.

Swinging never ceases to appeal to children of all ages.

Children, in particular, gladly spend a lot of time on a swing.

Research also suggests that swinging and rocking motions

have several benefits.

Benefits of swinging

SWINGS

SWINGS Swinging stimulates the vestibular system located in the

inner ear, which in turn develops motor coordination and

balance. The swinging motion also soothes the mind.

According to a recent study, rocking even induces deeper

sleep. In children’s occupational therapy, swinging is used

as a means of activation.

The sandbox is full of possibilities. The same material takes

on new shapes from one day to another, and serves as the

platform for a wide variety of adventures. The sandbox

offers a good opportunity to use and get carried away by

one’s imagination.

Bringing visions to life in the sandbox is a means of

enjoying working with the hands and putting together

plans. Using the sense of touch improves three-

dimensional perception. The sandbox is also a safe place to

test which kind of structures fall apart.

Meanwhile, water play is a refreshing, cooling alternative.

Water appeals to us because of its soft nature and

constant mobility.

Let children shape their world

Children’s ability to cross the body’s midline is a prerequisite

for them to learn to read and write. For this reason,

climbing is a most effective exercise, for example as a

way of taking a break in the middle of the school day. In

climbing ladders and networks children make use of all four

limbs, which helps them achieve better physical awareness.

At the same time they learn to control and coordinate both

right and left side.

Climbing also interests older children, being a natural

opportunity for learning to avoid danger. When children

face their fear and test their skill on a climbing frame, they

become more ready to face the unexpected.

Climbers shine as readers

Although the sense of balance develops before birth,

we continue fine-tuning it throughout our lives. Balance

protects the body from injuries by preventing accidents.

The most intense development phase of balance takes

place between the ages of 5 and 7, but its maintenance

and development need constant training.

Balance is maintained by many parts of the nervous

system and muscles. Even light balance training

strengthens the cooperation between the sense of sight

and the sense of touch in the soles of the feet. This is

developed further through repetition. Balancing also

improves body control, which helps individuals to perceive

themselves in relation to the surrounding space.

Life is a matter of balance

Wild joy is beating a rhythm Spring and carousel products open up an opportunity to

enjoy the strength of one’s body. The products are easy to

push into speed and movement, propelled by the user’s own

body. Spinning around, swaying from side to side, and wild

rides all bring the joy of an amusement park to everyday

life. The movement of the spring and carousel products also

trains rhythmic awareness and tests the sense of balance.

When installing spring and carousel products, the designer

must remember to observe safety zone instructions. As

spring and carousel products involve momentum, their

safety zones must not overlap with the safety zones of

adjacent products.

The majority of Lappset’s multi-activity centres can be

equipped with a slide which best suits your needs. There

are three materials and shapes. When selecting a slide for

your product, think about the main user group. Which slide

should you have in your playground to set the imagination

soaring and spark delight from one day to the next?

The surrounding conditions should be kept in mind when

choosing the slide material. In warmer climates, under

direct sunlight, plastic slides will not get too hot for sliding.

If the park equipment is for rougher than average use, high

pressure laminate is recommended instead of wood or

plastic.

The Tube is a unique product in Lappset’s product range.

Because the Tube is assembled out of modules, it can be

made into nearly any shape. It can also include transparent

parts. Thanks to its modular structure, the Tube also rises

higher than other slides.

WOODMaterial: wood

Development is a process which lasts throughout

childhood. Sensory motor skills, in particular, are

connected to other types of learning to a surprising

extent. Movement and play help children towards better

awareness of themselves and their skills. Facing danger is

also a natural part of growing up and developing.

Lappset’s multi-activity centres provide children with

versatile motoric challenges which spontaneously train

their skills. Careful design of these multi-activity centres,

such as positioning of the lowest bars of the climbing

frame, discreetly guide different user groups, with no need

for signs. It is therefore important that children are not

helped on to the equipment.

Train the body, train the mind

Everyone can play! This has long been our guiding principle.

We have been designing and building equipment for

special groups to specific customer order for several years.

Currently there are already enough products meeting the

needs of these groups to fill an entire playground – all

tested by frequent use!

Some of these DFA products have been designed to

enable independent playing, while others require the

provision of some assistance. Children’s special needs have

been accounted for in the measurement of the equipment,

choice of material for grip surfaces, and the position of

support structures.

Adults are sometimes surprised that the same pirate ship

can entice children to enthusiastically play day after day.

Assuming themes and imagining roles benefit children in

a way that is not directly visible to adults. Themes provide

children with mental activity essential for the development

of their identity.

As different themes invite children to play different roles,

they have the opportunity to practice experiencing and

expressing feelings. Role and theme play, by involving

several participants, also trains their communication and

social skills. In other words, the benefits of theme play can

carry on beyond into working life.

Theme play offers life experiences

The Angry Birds™ activity parks have redefined the

concept of the playground. The new playground can now

become a significant local landmark and attraction!

The Angry Birds activity parks are always designed and

built as a whole. Depending on the playground area and

purpose, activity parks include products for play, games

and rest. These areas can also include a café or kiosk, if

needed. In addition, the activity parks can be decorated

with giant 3D characters as seen in the game, and

additionally the surface material pattern can also fit the

theme.

An Angry Birds activity park can be built both outdoors

and indoors. Seek inspiration by browsing through the

ready-made Angry Birds activity parks in the gallery of our

MyDesign! service at http://mydesign.lappset.com.

When you start building your number one playground,

contact a Lappset representative, and together we’ll

design the playground that meets your needs!

The playground became a hit!

Playing is like peeping into a kaleidoscope. Thanks to

children’s creativity, playing and games take on new forms

every day. Children bring what they have learnt into their

playing. They learn ways of doing things elsewhere, and

bring these methods with them to the playground.

130 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.PLAYGROUND SAFETY

A SAFE PLAYGROUND IS A SUM OF ITS PARTS

Guidance from the EN 1176 safety standardThe EN 1176 playground safety standard sets strict conditions on

the safety of playground products. The recommendations included

in the standard, 40 years of experience, research and testing are the

foundations on which the real safety of Lappset products lies.

We participate actively in international standardisation work and

cooperate both with the Finnish Standards Association (SFS) and the

Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). We have long been

actively involved in formulating and developing playground safety

standards. By the time new safety requirements are laid down in

international standards, Lappset has already been meeting them for

years.

Good relationships with other experts around the world have

also helped and will continue to help Lappset to improve product

safety further and further. Thanks to experience and know-how,

even the most innovative products can be designed and built with

safety considerations in mind. First-hand information received from

customers has also helped us to raise the safety of our products to

the high standard for which Lappset is now known. We understand

the value of feedback – whether positive or negative – and we hope

to keep receiving more in the future.

Lappset certifies its playground and sports equipment through

the best-known playground equipment testing laboratory, TÜV

(Technischer Überwachungsverein) in Germany, according to the

strictest possible GS (Geprüfte Sicherheit) standard. The certification

covers both product design and the quality of manufacture. We

also have an ISO 9001 quality certificate and an ISO 14001

environmental certificate. Together with safety considerations, these

certificates play a vital role in ensuring overall quality.

Products for all agesThe correct balance of safety and product intricacy depends on the

target age group of each product. All products are designed so that

getting on them is more challenging than playing on them or getting

off them.

The younger the product age group, the more important it is

to ensure good usability. Early teens need to be provided with

sufficiently challenging yet technically controlled environments

where they can test their physical limits and improve their motor

skills.

No entrapmentThe EN 1176 safety standard identifies numerous different

factors that need to be taken into account in designing playground

equipment. One of these is entrapment. All gaps and corners

between structural components need to be designed so as to

prevent children’s fingers, heads or bodies from getting trapped.

Special testing apparatus is used to measure any gaps in products.

If, for instance, a gap is big enough for a child’s body to pass through,

it needs to also allow a child’s head to pass. In addition, adults need

to be able to access all sections of the equipment in order to help

children in case of entrapment.

Safety zones and floor materialsA large percentage of accidents on playgrounds are the result of play.

This is why not all accidents can be prevented. The most important

thing in terms of safety is to remember that playgrounds consist of a

lot more than just the equipment. All products need to be surrounded

by a safety zone in any areas where the potential fall height is more

than 600 mm, and this area needs to have shock absorbing safety

surfacing. Although safety surfacing cannot prevent accidents,

it does protect children from serious head injuries and lowers the

severity of other injuries as well.

Instructions for the dimensions and overlap of safety zones and for

choosing floor materials are included in international standards. The

safety zones of adjoining equipment can overlap as long as there

is no momentum involved in using the products like there is with

swings, roundabouts and slides, for example. Safety standards do

not apply to benches, tables and rubbish bins located in the vicinity

of playground equipment. However, such items should never be

installed within a safety zone, or so that they can be easily moved, or

(as Tukes points out) so that they can be used for climbing into a tree

or over a fence. As long as the target group is kept in mind during

playground design, the most serious risks associated with these

structures can nevertheless also be avoided.

According to Tukes guidelines, a playground must be provided with a

fence 120 cm high if there are risks in the surroundings (such as busy

roads or a lake or a river) that children need to be protected from.

Standards for outdoor fitness and parkour equipment still under developmentMore and more playgrounds now also feature fitness and parkour

equipment. No safety standards have yet been established for

positioning these products. In order to ensure the safety of fitness

and parkour equipment, Lappset is participating as an invited

expert in the drawing up of a national safety standard for parkour

equipment in the UK.

Lappset has a solid understanding of how play and fitness

environments can be combined without compromising the needs of

either user group. Combining areas designed for different purposes

Playground safety is a sum of many factors. Even if the main aim is to make playgrounds sufficiently challenging,

exciting, and inspirational for learning children, they still also need to be safe. Lappset Group considers ensuring

product safety an issue of paramount importance. We follow safety standards meticulously in all stages of our

product design, manufacture and installation. This is our way of minimising injuries on playgrounds and elimina-

ting dangers as soon as possible.

Page 131: Lappset 2013

131Copyrights and patents Lappset Group Ltd PLAYGROUND SAFETY

is yet another step towards a future where playgrounds genuinely

function as meeting places for three different generations.

InstallationAppropriate fencing is erected around playgrounds during

construction. All construction sites are firmly locked up especially in

the evenings and overnight. Children are prevented from entering

playgrounds until all equipment has been securely installed and

safety surfacing laid down.

Calculating safety zones and measuring gaps between structural

components is very important for safety.

The structural strength of a product is a combination of its

components and joints. This is why installation staff needs to have

sufficient know-how of the tightening torques of different sized

fasteners. Excessive tightening damages fastenings and may

compromise the structural strength of a product even before it is

ready for use.

All equipment and the surrounding area are inspected by competent

staff before a playground is opened to the public. A signed report is

produced of each inspection and kept with other documents relating

to the playground, including instructions for installation, parts lists

and maintenance logs. Inspectors should not be involved in the

installation process or be personally responsible for the costs of

repairing any faults in the equipment.

Old playgroundsIn principle, safety standards only apply to products installed

after the adoption of the standards. The EN 1176 and EN 1177

safety standards entered into force in 2008, and any equipment

manufactured in or after 2009 needs to fulfil their requirements.

Safety requirements can be imposed retrospectively, but revisions

to existing standards, for example, cannot stipulate that existing

products need to be modified.

However, any modifications and repairs carried out on existing

equipment need to comply with the latest safety requirements. For

example, existing staircases that lack adequate safety railings do not

necessarily need to be replaced when a new standard is adopted,

but once these fail, the replacement staircases have to comply with

the latest safety standards. This means that eventually all products

will comply with international safety requirements. Until then, the

emphasis is on ensuring that no product is ever dangerous to use.

This is why competent inspectors need to assess whether any

aspects of old products need to be modified immediately.

Regular maintenance increases safetyThe level of safety established during playground installation needs

to be maintained throughout the life cycle of the products. Annual

inspections help to assess whether the materials used in the

products have deteriorated due to rust, rot or physical damage.

Wearing parts may need to be inspected as often as four times a

year, depending on the popularity of individual playgrounds.

Visual inspections are used on particularly popular playgrounds or

in areas where the risk of vandalism is high. The frequency of visual

inspections can vary from a couple of visits per month to almost daily

visits. The phone number of the person responsible for maintaining

the playground should be posted on the playground info board, as

this has been found to be a significant factor in quickly noticing and

correcting damage caused by vandalism.

Thanks to their modular structure, most Lappset products can be

retrospectively fitted with new functions and, in case of special

needs, accessibility features such as handles or railings.

Product qualityProduct quality also depends on many different factors. The size of

components, the strength of welded joints, the durability of surface

treatments, the thickness of base coats, geometrical tolerances

and the UV resistance of paints all contribute to the overall quality

of products. That is why Lappset Group invests a lot of time and

resources in maintaining the high product quality.

Lappset has used its more than 40 years of experience to develop

a quality control system according to which all new components

are meticulously inspected. Spot checks are also carried out on

production lines. Every complaint relating to quality is followed up

carefully, and any components left in warehouses are inspected.

The structural strength of products is tested both according to the

applicable standards and Lappset’s own testing protocols, which

are often considerably stricter than the compulsory tests. For

example, Lappset’s own test for swing frames involves almost double

the loads used in standardised testing. Moreover, the frames are

subjected to torsion which wears the frames the most, contrary

to the minimum requirements of standard test methods. Tests on

materials include strength, corrosion resistance and UV resistance

testing. The safety of fully assembled structures is assessed using

tests for impact, loading and the risk of entrapment. Investing in

product safety is a conscious choice for Lappset and an important

element of our corporate social responsibility.

132 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.

Oopsy daisy! There are always a few accidents in the playground.

Little heads stay spinning a good while after a go on

the roundabout, and little legs cannot always keep up.

Lappset safety surfacing is designed to protect children so

that most dangerous looking situations turn out to be just

harmless little scares.

Standardised safetyLappset safety surfacing is made out of soft materials

that prevent injuries from falling. The materials conform

to the requirements of the EN 1176-1 safety standard as

long as you match the thickness of the surfacing correctly

to the product’s fall height. Safety surfacing requires solid,

level, water-permeable ground underneath. Different

colour options allow you to coordinate the colour scheme

of your playground from the floor to the tips of the

equipment.

Safety surfacingSoftex safety tilesThe safety tiles consist of colourful rubber granules that

are glued together with a weather-resistant adhesive. The

tiles are available in the following colours: red, grey, green,

yellow, blue and beige. Softex safety tiles are mainly made

of reclaimed materials and they can be recycled again.

Safegrass sand-filled synthetic turfSand-filled synthetic turf can be used to create cost-

efficient seamless surfaces that have excellent impact

absorbency properties thanks to their base and surface

layers. The artificial turf looks impressive, is easy to install

and allows water to pass through. The colour options

are red, green, white, yellow, blue and black. Sand-filled

artificial turf can be recycled.

Wetpour is a seamless safety surface materialMade from rubber shreds and a polyurethane compound,

Wetpour withstands even abrasive wear. The material

is mixed on site and then cast, which requires special

expertise and leaving time for setting. Colours can be laid

out in ways that help partially sighted users find their

way around. Wetpour is another recyclable safety surface

material.

Natural materialsNatural materials such as grass, sand, gravel, wood chips

and bark are popular and affordable materials for safety

surfaces. Gravel is suitable for many different products

and even the biggest acceptable fall heights. Grass can

only be used with low-rise elements and in rest areas, as

grass only protects for up to a 1.5.metre fall height and is

subject to wear. Natural materials are easy to apply but

require regular maintenance.

SAFETY SURFACING

Ask your local dealer about the different safety surface options. Materials may differ from country to country due to availability and climate requirements.

Page 134: Lappset 2013

134 All products adhere to safety standard EN1176.

FALL ZONESFloor plans produced by Lappset specify areas where shock

absorbing safety surfacing needs to be laid down. This

zone is measured according to any parts of the equipment

that allow children to climb more than 60 cm off the

ground or where they can gain momentum.

All products also need to be surrounded by a fall zone

that equates to the area where shock absorbing safety

surfacing is required or extends at least 150 cm from any

part of the equipment that allows children to climb off the

ground.

The difference between the area requiring shock absorbing

safety surfacing and the fall zone is best explained with

the help of an example: With regard to staircases, the fall

zone is measured from the edge of the lowest step, while

the safety surfacing zone is measured from the first step

that reaches a height of at least 60 cm.

The fall zone cannot include any objects that are both hard

and sharp. Examples of such objects are sharp-edged rocks,

edges of tree stumps, prickly branches, or fencing. Fall

zones can include objects that are hard but not sharp, such

as tree trunks or natural round rocks, or objects that are

sharp but not hard, such as the branches of a hedge.

GENERAL MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONSNorthern pine into wooden componentsPine grows slowly (130–140 days/year) in the northern

Boreal region, making it fine-grained and tough. Pine is a

living material, swelling when it gets wet and shrinking

when it dries. Pine can bend and crack. However, whatever

happens, its toughness remains. Resin and knots are a

natural part of the wood.

Wood protectionTypical to northern pine, the majority (70%) of timber

is heartwood. Heartwood is extremely tough and the

structure of wooden parts is usually designed so that the

tough heartwood is on the surface where the timber is

most vulnerable to the elements. The surface of the wood

is susceptible to rotting, but modern wood protection

technology and safe wood preservatives help make the

surface durable too. Lappset’s wood preservatives do not

contain arsenic or chromium. Timber treated with these

wood preservatives can be recycled as impregnated wood.

We use water-based paints to improve surface properties

and to protect the wood against the sun’s ultraviolet

irradiation and against aureobasidium. Some painted

surfaces are further protected with a layer of varnish.

Timber treated solely with these preservatives can be

disposed of as wood waste.

Laminated woodExtra strong, long, sturdy, and curved components are

manufactured from laminated wood composed of sheets

of timber pressed together and bonded with weatherproof

glue. Widely variable weather conditions may cause small

splits to appear on the laminated wood, but these do not

reduce its durability. Laminated timber does not twist or

distort and although changes in humidity cause movement

in wood, this occurs more often in solid wood than in

laminated timber. Depending on the treatment, laminated

wood can be recycled either as impregnated wood or wood

waste.

GENERAL MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

Steel feetThe posts and pillars usually stand on metal feet. Bolts are

glued on to wooden pillars to allow a flange to be attached

for mounting the feet. The vertical tensile breaking

strength of the joint between the post and the steel foot

is 60,000 N. The post’s transverse strength is 2,200 Nm

(220 kgm).

Plywood, high pressure laminate (HPL)Depending on the circumstances, we use 6.5–21 mm

plywood or high pressure laminate. The plywood is made

of thin, alternating birch and/or pine plies bonded with

weatherproof glue. Panels are coated with a hot-pressed,

impregnated weatherproof surface agent, and most are

further coated with weatherproof and wear-resistant

paint. Floor panels also feature a roughened, non-slip

surface. Depending on treatment, the plywood can be

recycled either as impregnated wood or as wood waste.

The HPL elements are between 6 and 20 mm thick, and

survive knocks, scratching and varying weather conditions.

UV irradiation does not weaken the strength of high

pressure laminate, but bright colours may fade over time.

Laminates can be used in thermal energy production.

Metal componentsThe metal parts are made of stainless steel, anodised

or painted aluminium or hot-dip galvanised steel, and

the steel components are either sandblasted and

treated with zinc epoxy and powdered paint or given an

electrodeposited zinc coating and then a coat of powdered

paint. The metal components have excellent weather-

resistant properties and a finished look, they are also

recyclable.

Plastic componentsThe plastic parts are made of polypropylene, polyamide,

polycarbonate or polyethylene. The material is always

chosen according to the requirements of each element.

Fibre is added to the aforementioned materials in

components that are subject to heavy stresses. The plastic

materials are recyclable.

RopesThe ropes in our net products are polyamide-coated steel

cable of 16 or 18 mm diameter. The tensile strength of

the ropes is minimum 2,200 kg. The materials and the

braiding on the topmost layers of the ropes have been

chosen on the basis of their superior wear resistance and

UV-protective properties. Rope strength is unaffected by

surface wear. The ropes are recyclable.

Bonded rubber shred componentsFor part of its product range Lappset uses components

made of bonded rubber shred, consisting of recycled

rubber granules glued together with weather-resistant

polyurethane adhesive. Some of these components use

a combination of bonded rubber shred and natural rubber

(EPDM). All components containing rubber shred are

recyclable.

Swing chainsAll our swing chains are made of 6 mm diameter stainless

steel, guaranteeing long-lasting protection against

corrosion, even in demanding conditions. The chains are

recyclable.

LappCoat – unique coating for metal componentsLappCoat is a coating method for metal components,

developed by Lappset. We have designed the method with

particular attention to the requirements of playground

equipment. The LappCoat coating was innovated through

research and development which helped us define the

stages of the production process, the chemicals used

in the process, and the coating thicknesses. LappCoat

provides metal components with unbeatable qualities,

such as a 10-year guarantee.

The LappCoat coating process has four stages. In the

final stages, the metal components are undercoated with

a zinc epoxy primer which protects them from corrosion

and automatically repairs small scratches on the surface.

The LappCoat surface is finished with polyester powder

coating, which leaves the surface shiny, extremely durable

and pleasant to touch. The LappCoat method guarantees

that the metal components have long-lasting, bright and

fresh colours.

The LappCoat coating process is made unique by our

rigorous methods and quality control. Even the smallest

details of all stages of the process have been audited. In

order to guarantee the outcome, we have also audited the

processes of all subcontractors importing the materials

needed in the LappCoat coating.

DELIVERY AND INSTALLATIONDeliveryLappset playground equipment is delivered as components and

elements with:

- despatch notes

- installation instructions

- inspection and maintenance instructions.

Lappset design criteria ensures efficient packaging for ease of

transportation. The packages are placed on pallets to speed

up the loading and handling, and significantly reduce transport

damage and costs.

Installation instructionsWith each Lappset product we attach clear assembly and

installation instructions. Components are clearly numbered

in order to make the installation as easy as possible. In the

illustrated installation instructions you will find all the necessary

information regarding frame connections, assembly of wall

elements, panels, roofs and the installation of the structural

elements such as posts, bars, nets, suspension bridges, steps and

slides.

Minimum safety zonesThe safety area for each product is shown in the catalogue and

also in the installation instructions. Since products may change

during the validity of this catalogue, the safety area must always

be built according to the installation instructions provided with

the product. Up-to-date documents can also be found on the

Lappset website.

FoundationAs standard, the playground equipment is installed on

underground foundations. Alternatively, the equipment can be

surface mounted. Please specify when placing your order if you

wish to opt for surface mounting.

Playground equipment and other items must be permanently

fixed to the ground.

Some equipment can be fixed to the ground using anchoring

parts that must be ordered separately. The traditional use of

concrete foundations is only required in certain cases. Details

of specific foundations are given within the installation

instructions.

BaseAccording to the EN standards, playground equipment must

be assembled on a surface the critical fall height of which

corresponds to the fall height of the equipment. If loose

materials, such as sand with a grain size of 0.2–2 mm or

gravel with a grain size of 2–8 mm, are used, the required layer

thickness varies between 25 and 40 cm. Safety tiles, which are

made of bonded rubber shred, present an easy-to-clean option

for a safe floor material. Elements can be assembled on top of

grass, as long as their critical fall height does not exceed 1 m.

In addition to the shock absorbing base shown in the drawings,

the safety sphere extends to at least 150 cm around all parts of

the product upon which users can climb. Different countries may

have different regulations regarding this space. Most countries

prohibit allowing sharp and hard objects in this area, such as cut

stones or rough tree stumps.

More detailed information on safe floor materials will be supplied

with the assembly instructions.

InstallationInstallation instructions are sent with all products and must be

followed.

Always read the installation instructions thoroughly before

installing the playground equipment. The equipment must

be assembled and installed on site following the installation

instructions given by the manufacturer. The minimum safety

zones mentioned in the installation instructions must also be

adhered to.

Elevation and footing depths of the equipment must follow

the instructions. The vertical parts must be vertical and the

horizontal parts must be horizontal, as otherwise certain planned

inclinations in the equipment may not conform to safety norms.

If the guidelines for minimum safety zones mentioned in the

installation instructions are not followed, the installer may have

to accept the consequences of this negligence and compensate

for any injuries sustained within the minimum safety zones.

Commissioning of the PlaygroundBefore using the play area, a handover inspection should be

performed. The handover inspection, log book and assembly

instructions accompanying the order confirmation or delivery are

provided to facilitate the inspection into the safety of the play

area and to ensure that the facility has been correctly installed.

Any missing items or damage sustained during transportation should

be reported when unpacking the delivery and within 14 days of

receiving the goods. Please remember that the play area should not

be used until the site has been cleared and the playground declared

safe!

Inspection and maintenanceSafety of playground equipment results from:

- correct installation, including inspection,

- appropriate surfacing and

- regular maintenance.

Ensure the continuous safety of your playground by regular safety

inspections and maintenance procedures using the Lappset Service

Manual. When drawing up the inspection and maintenance plan of

the playground, consider the playground’s usage and susceptibility

to vandalism. Carefully document the inspection and maintenance

procedures. Access to the playground has to be restricted if the

playground is not safe to use.
