Langworth Local November Edition 2016

We will remember them

Deadline for the winter edition is 18th of November

http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/LangworthGroup/

Note from the Editor

I’ve recently read about a soldier who had served in Iraq & Afghanistan and who on leaving the army, suffered from mental health issues. He subsequently lost his family, his home and the job he loved so much. He was just one of the men/women who had slipped through the net. It beggars belief that this still happens but it does. There are charities that help our boys (and girls) in so many ways. Many have lost limbs, have horrific injuries, suffer from mental illness or may struggle to cope with family life and getting back into the workplace. These charities can help with their recovery and provide a long term support network.

If you’d like more information about the good work that these charities do, then please check out their various websites & see if there’s a way that you can help. November 11th - remembering those who gave their lives for our

country.

Missing

This is Bladey & she has been missing from St Hugh’s Drive in Langworth since 10/10/2016. She is a black, long haired cat with a small white patch on her chest, she doesn't wear a collar and is very friendly. She’s missed very much and we would like to urge people to check their sheds and garages. We desperately want her home safe & sound. If you have any news at all on Bladey please contact Amy on 07487874316.

LANGWORTH COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PLAN UPDATE The proposed Langworth Community Emergency Plan has now been submitted to the Lincolnshire Emergency Planning Department and I would like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help with this. Disasters or major emergencies can strike suddenly, unexpectedly and anywhere. Making a plan now will reduce the impact of any emergency on our community and help ensure our response is effective and proportionate. The purpose of the Community Emergency Plan is to help prepare the community to be ready for an emergency, in case the emergency services are unable to attend. This will be achieved by building resilience within the Community, using our existing resources in the most efficient and successful way. Our aim is to provide expertise and voluntary support that is safe within Langworth if the emergency services cannot be present. On Wednesday, 9th November our team will undergo some stage 4 recovery training i.e. ‘How to reduce the amount of time it would take your community to recovery from an incident’. It will be held at the Memorial Hall from 7pm-9pm. If you are interested in helping us or just want to find out more about the plan do come along. I am sure it will be an interesting evening. If you would like any more information please ring Chris King on 750423.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Editor’s interesting facts….

In 1982, the Almeida family lost their pet tortoise, Manuela, while their house was being renovated. 30 years later they were cleaning out the attic after their father had died and finally found Manuela……..alive.

They think she was able to survive by eating termites that lived in the pile of

furniture that their dad had been hoarding!

Planning Appeal Update Langworth Group Parish Council recently received a decision report from the Inspectorate with reference to Planning Application Number 133433, on Barlings Lane. The Inspectorate upheld the decision of WLDC and dismissed the appeal. He agreed with the concerns of WLDC, Langworth Group Parish Council and the Parishioners. If you wish to read the full report you can find it on WLDC Website under Planning Appeals. If you do not have access to a computer or the internet a printed copy will be made available for viewing on the notice board of the Memorial Hall.

Langworth Voice Update

Some of you may be wondering what has happened to those questionnaires that we filled out at the end of last year and the beginning of this one. Well, 225 were collected in all, which represented around a 92% return from the occupied dwellings in our parishes. This is quite remarkable and is a much better response than most other villages up and down the country. A very big thank you goes out to everyone that participated. These completed questionnaires were supposed to be handed over to Community Lincs for them to process the data and produce the combined results for us. Because of financial cutbacks earlier this year, Community Lincs told us that they were no longer able to do this. However our Parish Council has now successfully applied for and been granted new funding (well done Mrs Maxine Soroka, our Parish Clerk). So everything is now with Community Lincs and as soon as we have feedback from them we will be in a position to make the results available to everyone. Thank you for your patience. Mike Herbert.

Play Park Notice The play park at the Memorial Hall will be closed on the following dates for essential maintenance: Saturdays, 5th, 12th, 19th & 26 of November. We have a voluntary youth group coming to pressure wash the matting/equipment, paint and tidy the area so that our children can have a much better experience when coming to play.

The Parish Council are sorry for any inconvenience caused. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Editor’s interesting facts… In 2015 a Canadian man was arrested after tying more than 100 balloons to a garden chair and flying over the

Dunholme Camera Club The winter months are upon us and so are the colder days and nights, it really doesn’t fill you with enthusiasm to pick up the camera and get out and take pictures but did you know that you can get some great pictures during the winter? The reason being is that on a good clear cold day the ambient light can be very pleasing and with the cold air it brings good clear images without any haze in the atmosphere to make the images soft. So don’t hesitate get wrapped up warm get out and about and get some great pictures, the crisp frosty mornings, the clear skies, snow laying on the ground freshly laid overnight and of course get in the car and go a little further to get some great landscape pictures. Want a hand with your photography then get in touch or just come along to one of our meetings at The Old School Dunholme. We have 2 meetings in November the first will be on the 17th November when we will be having our “Chairs Challenge” this is a competition that was set back in January and will be judged on the night by our current Chairperson Samantha Ford, her last official big duty as she steps down at the end of the year after her 2 years of duty. second meeting will be on the 24th November when I will be judging the final of the monthly competitions, these have been going on all through the year and I will be judging the best photographs from each month in fact the best 5 images from each month and there will be an overall winner at the end of the night. Please note that these 2 nights have just a week between them as the Old School at Dunholme is booked for a full week at the beginning of the month. Please make sure that you go to our brand new website and check out the members pictures and we now have a “Stock Library” of images that you can view and if you would like you can buy your favorites to grace your walls. Lincolnshire Police Allotment Watch is designed to enable allotment users to communicate with their local police to reduce crime and receive crime reduction information and alerts. How we communicate Lincolnshire Police operates a messaging system called Lincsalert. This enables your local policing team to send messages and to inform members of current crime trends.

If you would like to join Allotment Watch, please ask your local NPT or contact: Police Headquarters, PO Box 999, LN5 7PH. If you have access to the Internet sign up at www.lincolnshirealert.co.uk Benefits of the Lincsalert system include: • Website available 24 hours a day. • Totally confidential, secure service, your data is never shared without your consent. • Subscribe to receive alerts by email, phone, and text. • Join an on-line virtual NHW scheme and swap ideas with other members. • Report information to your Neighbourhood Policing Teams. • Receive feedback and updates about your reports. • Completely free to receive service. • Unsubscribe at any time. Security on Allotment Sites Keeping an allotment is a healthy and enjoyable way to socialize and grow your own food and plants. The siting of allotments often gives rise to criminals having easy and unchallenged access to your belongings. Follow our crime reduction advice to cut down on opportunist theft: • Try to have a locked gate at the entrance of your allotment as the first line of defense. This means they cannot easily drive onto the site to remove items. • Position sheds so that a clear view is given from any adjoining pathways or roads. • In order that they cannot be easily broken, have wired glass placed in any shed windows. Laminated glass is also a deterrent, as it takes longer to break through the glass.

http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/LangworthGroup/

• Screen shed or outbuilding windows, so that goods and equipment cannot be seen from the outside. • Consider placing a shed alarm inside your shed or having a shed bar fitted. These are available from Police Headquarters at a reduced rate. • Paint your lawnmower or equipment random colours such as pink or orange. This devalues the items for resale. • Post code ALL belongings even if they are not of high value. If we need to return items, it tells us where they have been stolen from and helps us to locate a criminal’s activity to a particular site. • Mark your property with UV pens or permanent marker pens. UV pens will make an invisible (to the naked eye) mark to your equipment, which will not detract from future value. You simply write your postcode in full and add your house number or name after the postcode. If you decide to sell the item at a later stage, you can issue a receipt for the payment of the goods. A permanent marker will deter thieves further as they know that they cannot sell the goods with your postcode on the equipment. Suspicion is raised if a mark has been crossed through or tampered with. • Consider placing your items on Immobilise database (www.immobilise.com). This is a secure site to record all your serial numbers. When an item is stolen, all the Police Forces will be able to see the item and if found return it to you. (No items can be seen till your flag it up as stolen or lost) • Finally if you have been a victim of crime – report it on tel: 101 and let us be aware

If you want to keep up with all the latest Police news in your area please join us on Twitter and Facebook, we have an Email address if you want to contact us,

New Fencing For Play Area

Members of Langworth Group Parish Council at the newly fenced play area.

Children will be able to play safely in the play area after the installation of a new fence.

Langworth Parish Council recently appealed to local businesses for help with local projects.

Chestnut Homes kindly came forward & generously covered the full cost of buying and installing the new fence.

Since replacing the fence the Parish Council has already received many positive comments from parents and other members of the community, who agree that it’s made the area a much safer & improved space.

If you would like to help with other projects in the community we would love to hear from you.

FIREWORKS Sometimes our pets get forgotten in the excitement of Bonfire night so here is a guide to keeping your horses and pets happy.

Unlike us, pets have no way of knowing what the loud bangs and shrieks of fireworks are. This can cause a high stress situation which pets will often try to escape from. Many pets are affected by firework fear and it is important to be aware of it. Cats & Dogs Build a safe space or den so your pets have somewhere to

hideout. Check when local displays are being held and sound-proof your house by closing curtains and shutting all windows and doors. Try to act normally as your pet will look to you for reassurance and make sure that your pet’s microchip information is up to date in case of escape.

Horses If your horse is nervous then keep him stabled during nearby displays. Make sure all fencing is intact and that there is nothing left lying in the field that could cause injury. Keep horses distracted with well filled hay nets, salt licks etc. Small Animals Provide extra bedding so that small animals have somewhere to hide and if possible bring your rabbits and Guinea pigs inside before displays to reduce the risk of them going into shock. (Or cover hutches with a blanket or old carpet) Wildlife Please don’t forget the hedgehogs and other wildlife that could be hibernating or hiding out in your bonfire. Check before lighting. Did you know???

Up until 1959, it was illegal to not celebrate Bonfire night in Britain. There was an exception to the law, as St Peter’s school in York where Guy Fawkes attended still refuses to burn effigies of its former pupil.

Guy Fawkes was not hung, drawn & quartered, as per the traditional death for traitors in 17th century England. As he waited for his punishment, Fawkes leapt to his death to avoid having his testicles cut off, his stomach opened & his guts removed. Instead he died of a broken neck and his body was subsequently quartered.

The very first fireworks display in England took place at the wedding of Henry VII in 1486.

The cellar that Fawkes tried to blow up was destroyed by a fire in 1834 that also destroyed the medieval Houses of Parliament.

Sparklers can get five time hotter than cooking oil and a rocket can reach speeds of 150mph.

You see the explosion of a firework before hearing it because sound travels at 761mph, but light travels at 671,000,000mph.

NETTLEHAM MEDICAL PRACTICE

CARE QUALITY COMMISSION (CQC)

The practice has recently received the final report following the inspection of the practice by CQC on 28th

April 2016. We are absolutely delighted to announce that the practice has been rated as OUTSTANDING.

This is a fantastic achievement as only approximately 5% of the GP practices in the country achieve this

rating.

We are the first practice in West

Lincolnshire CCG and the third

practice in Lincolnshire to achieve

the highest rating.

Thank you to all patients who have

congratulated us on the rating.

The full report can be found on the CQC website or via the link on

the practice website.

TELEPHONE SYSTEM

We have recently changed the telephone system at the practice. This upgrade has meant that there have been

a few changes. Firstly the telephone lines will now open at 8:00am each morning.

The options have also changed as we have introduced an appointment cancellation option. This option

allows you to leave a message informing us that you wish to cancel an appointment.

To leave a repeat prescription request please either dial the main number and select option 4 (during opening

hours only) or telephone 01522 754649 to go straight to the repeat prescription ordering line which available

24 hours a day.

Finally the new system and technology will record all telephone calls.

Welton Patients and Doctors Association (PDA)

Our E bay sales continue to bring in a steady revenue so thank you to everyone who has donated sale items. Please keep them coming! The PDA AGM will also have been held by the time this magazine is out. I will update you on Committee members and anything else which may be of interest in the December magazine. Tickets for the Christmas Lunch, to be held on Friday 9th December, are now available priced £5.50 each for a 3 course meal. The meal is held in Welton Village Hall and this year we have the added attraction of St Mary’s School choir who will sing Christmas songs for us from 11.45am for approximately 20 minutes. Welton Family Health Centre

Newsletter October 2016

It is with great regret we have to announce that Dr Nicola Porter has resigned from the practice and will not now be returning to work as a partner following her recent maternity leave. Dr Porter has chosen to spend more time with her young family and we all wish her the very best. We know that patients will be disappointed to hear of this and we will keep patients informed of future arrangements. Please do not wait to be recalled for your ‘flu vaccination. If you think you are eligible please come along to our next Saturday Drop in Session on Saturday 5th November 9 – 11.30am. Don’t be put off by the queue! – We have a team working and patients are seen very quickly. We are also offering booked appointment slots on the same day for children in the “at risk” category or under four years old. The vaccine is given as a nasal spray, no needles involved, and we would encourage all parents to protect their children (and others) by having this. We have been made aware of an unknown pharmacy company contacting patients trying to sell medication for their condition. They appear to have details of what ailments the patient has and we would like to reassure patients that this information has not come from the practice and we have no knowledge of this company and advise patients to contact the police if they receive any such suspicious calls and do not be persuaded to part with any financial details over the ‘phone. Reminder to please cancel appointments if not needed – the reception staff are advising that the appointment system is under great pressure and not helped by appointments being made but not kept. Twenty six doctor appointments and seventy two nursing appointments were made but not attended in September. Could we remind patients not to come to the surgery if suffering with acute chest pain. We have had a few examples recently when this has happened and an emergency ambulance has had to be called on each occasion. Please dial 999 if you are suffering from chest pains - do not drive or make the journey to the practice. Sallie Stead

GP PILOT SCHEME As many of you will be aware the county is facing difficulties recruiting GPs, with only 337 out of 417 positions in Lincolnshire currently filled. Therefore the practice have agreed to take part in the Lincolnshire Medical Council’s pilot scheme to recruit European Doctors. If the scheme is successful it is hoped that it will be rolled out to other counties and areas across the UK. CARERS AWARD The practice are delighted to announce that they have recently been recognised for the way they support unpaid carers and directs them to the right place for help. Lincolnshire Carers & Young Carers Partnership (LCYCP) have awarded the practice the Lincolnshire Carers Quality Award.

The LCYCP works to increase awareness of unpaid carers – those who provide unpaid support to

a family member, friend or neighbour who would otherwise not be able to manage to live

independently or whose health or wellbeing would deteriorate without this help.

If you would like information on how to register as a carer please speak to one of our receptionists

or Helen Dean our carer’s champion.

PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP – FLU DAY HAMPER

Vicars Blog November 2016

We are used to our newsreaders readers being their usual calm and professional selves as they deliver the daily round of news to us on whatever channel/s we watch. So it did cause a slight stir recently when Kate Somerville, at the end of a report on the BBC lunch-time news was obviously moved to tears by what she

had seen. The reason for her lack of composure was a report on the children of Aleppo, on aid workers who are constantly having to battle against all the odds to save the lives of children and adults who are caught in the crossfire between warring factions. I guess that Kate Somerville was mirroring the feelings of most of us when we watched that report as we watched the desperation, and sadness and brokenness, the tears and deep trauma. It is very difficult I think, to imagine living in such traumatic circumstances and to understand how to continue to fight for some kind of ‘normal’ existence in the midst of such inhumane circumstances, and I guess that like many others I ask questions of God in this – where is God in the suffering? For many this is a key question when they think about God. In many ways there is no intellectual answer to that – read the book of Job, a book about suffering – Job had everything taken from him and everything thrown at him– in the end God appears to him and doesn’t answer any of Job’s questions – and Job says, ‘now I see’. As Christians ‘the seeing’ is about seeing the crucified God, Jesus on the cross, who became part of the suffering and calls us to live faithful lives, to be loving, hospitable and generous people. The Book of Psalms provides us with examples of people who poured their hearts out to God over various tragedies and difficulties, some who screamed in anger, some who wept, some who cried out for mercy – in the face of the situation in Syria, and in many other parts of the world, that I think is the only response we can make. Our world is messy and there are no neat answers to complex questions, but I do believe that in the midst of the mess, Jesus stands with the poor and the broken and it is my/our task to stand there too, praying. When I watch all this on the news I am reminded that my petty aggravations over silly things or my quickness to moan when something goes wrong is all very trivial in the scheme of things; that I live in a good and pleasant land, in freedom, with food on the table with a roof over my head – there is much to be thankful for. Every blessing Penny

Parish Council News .Planning

133433- Chairlady advised of the appeal being dismissed.

134977 - Proposal: Planning application for change of use of land to site 10no. touring caravans. –

Cllr Gould offered concerns over the flood risk to the additional 10 sites.

Police Matters - Report of local incidents

Local incidents read out by Cllr King: Sept total number of incidents = 9, including 1 vehicle, 1 domestic, 1 violence, 1 suspicious, 1 hazard & 4 traffic offences.

The police have been prioritising verge parking & anti-social behaviour. Any incidents should be reported to 101.

The NPT community panel advised that they are prioritising speeding & they would try to attend one PC meeting in three.

http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/LangworthGroup/

County Councillor Reports C/Cllr Fleetwood went on to refer to the County Council’s Cultural Services decision to offload several of their cultural sites in the hope that the admission fees to them is going to cover the overall running costs. C/Cllr Fleetwood then referred to “Devolution” as a major issue advising that some of the 10 Council’s in Lincolnshire are in support of it but personally , although in support of devolution itself he was not in support of devolution with a Mayor. Other correspondence/reports

Neighbourhood Plan – Chairlady welcomed Luke Brown & Daniel Evans from WLDC to the meeting. Luke Brown then addressed the PC, provided information & gave an in depth update on the Neighbourhood Plan.

NCS Programme: Clerk to meet with a risk assessor prior to the youth group doing work to the play area. The PC will need to provide a pressure washer & purchase the paint, brushes and any other equipment required.

Emergency Plan – Cllr King provided an update on the progress of the emergency plan to date & gave a rundown of dates actions were taken and information sent to Cllrs. Cllr King then stated that she would like to book the next phase of training on the 9th of November.

Parish Plan - Funding through village SOS has been agreed & arrangements are being made to deliver the Parish Plan Surveys to Community Lincs. The remaining Parish Plan funds are £371.47. Cllrs agreed that the report from the Parish Plan can be used to move forward into a Neighbourhood plan.

Precept: Clerk’s report to the PC: The amenity grant for grass cutting will cease at the end of this financial year, this will mean that the PC will have a shortfall of £1627.43 if we were to continue with the grass cutting as is. Glendale have advised that if we were to reduce the cutting to 7 or less a year they would need to use alternative machinery & cutting would take much longer than normal hence increasing cost. We currently cut the Memorial hall at £38.55 per cut (total £346.95 for 9 cuts), St Hugh’s & St Johns churches at £61.56 per cut (total £1,454.04 for 9 cuts) as well as the verges. In addition to this WLDC have confirmed that they will continue to pay the first £100 of our precept, however, the Local Council Tax Support Grant is to stop at the end of this financial year. This will be a loss of £1266.90 to the PC based on last year’s figures. The cost to parishioners is worked out by dividing the precept minus £100 by the number of households, this changes on a yearly basis with new houses being built etc. With this year’s precept the cost to the average Band D householder was £76.07, if the precept were to be kept at the same amount the cost this year would increase to £82.39. WLDC suggests that the PC decides what services it wants to deliver & the budget requirement. Then look to see whether reserves could be used to support the budget or whether the full budget is precepted at a cost to householders. Cuts within our precept will have to be considered.

Next Parish Council Meeting to be held on Tuesday 1st of November

Have your say……

Could the person who keeps letting their dog “poo” outside my house please stop? It's pretty obvious that as I cut the grass outside my property I wouldn't want it used as a dog toilet. If your dog does have a “poop” outside my house please bag it, pick it up and walk to 20yds over the road to the red bin and put it in there. The other thing I'd like to complain about is the fact people hide behind fake names and aliases, if you can't put your name to things you write for this page then don't write Rick Lister, Barlings Lane, Langworth.

Dear Mr Lister Sorry for the editing of your email but I understand we have some young readers out there too! I totally agree that if you have a dog and it poops whilst out walking, (which most dogs do) then bag it and bin it! It is your responsibility as a dog owner & with these colder nights coming up it’ll keep your hands warm until you find a bin! Editor

Regarding the complaint from a disgruntled resident, I think they could have at least had the decency to put their name to their letter. I was mortified that my neighbours, who had lit the fire, might have thought it was us complaining (in a rather cowardly way), so we rushed over with a bottle of wine! The disgruntled neighbour would have found, as we did, as we made the effort to speak to them, that they are a young couple who are new to the village and are doing their very best to tidy the garden, so were burning the waste. They also told us that they were happy to stop the fires at any time, should it prove a nuisance! A little communication goes a long way. I do hope that they are not under the impression that the whole village is filled with grumpy old complainers who don't talk to each other or help out when they can. They are a delightful couple, just the kind of people I'd like to see breathing new life into Langworth. As a side note, I remember the vicar setting many fires and the smoke drifting around for hours and nobody moaned. Rebecca Pg

Dear Rebecca Although understanding your horror regarding the complaint by a disgruntled resident, consideration & courtesy should go both ways. On one hand the resident could of approached the homeowner to request that the fire be extinguished, however, on the other hand the homeowner could have for-warned their neighbours of their intention to light a fire. In any case I think that both your letter and Mr Lister’s talking of false names or not putting your name to a complaint is not a case of cowardice but comes out of fear of the reaction & in some cases retaliation from the person involved. Sad as it may be that this is what our society is becoming but we’ve all heard the horror stories of a chain reaction started by something so simple. In any case I hope that your neighbours have settled in and are enjoying their new home. Editor (Please be aware that some small details may be censored to protect people’s privacy)
