Remembrance Day

On Monday 11 November we went to the Remembrance Day ceremony at Lane Cove Plaza. There we

represented our school and laid a wreath. It was a very exciting and rewarding opportunity for us.

P&C AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the P&C will be held on Thursday 28 November. All office bearers must be

elected annually. At the AGM, all roles are declared open and anyone may nominate for a position.

Road Safety - Henley Park

We would like to remind all parents about the importance of road safety around the school, especially in the

very busy pick up time in the afternoon and to prioritise safety over convenience. Of particular concern, is the

number of parents who cross Cullen St to get to Henley Park with their children rather than teaching children

the importance of using the crossing available on Cullen St. We implore all families to use the crossing on

Cullen St and teach the children the safest way to cross a busy road.

Stewart House Mini Fete

Please see the below table for how you can help towards the Stewart House Mini Fete this year. We are

still seeking many donations across the school. Anything you can spare is greatly appreciated!

Grade Stall How You Can Help

Kindergarten Cakes ($1 each) Students from Kindergarten, please bring in individual

cupcakes, slices etc. on the day (please no nuts or

seeds nor anything which requires cutting/refrigeration

and include ingredients on the box). Healthy options

disposable cups (paper preferable) and bring in to your

class teacher.

Year 2 Books (50c-$2) All students, please donate books that are in good

condition and send them to 2H.

good condition and send them to the boxes outside

Save The Date – Online Guardians

Online Guardians are experts in the field of Social Networks and Adolescent Development. They have been

booked to do a staff presentation and parent presentation on the ever changing online world. There is

further information in this newsletter on what will be addressed in the parent session.

Our Big Kitchen

On Friday 1 November, 3-6 SRC and other teacher-

nominated students took an excursion to Our Big Kitchen in

Bondi. Our Big Kitchen is a community kitchen that aims to

minimise food waste by turning fresh produce into home

cooked meals which are then distributed to those in need.

Lane Cove West took part in a variety of activities including

juicing fresh oranges and grapefruits, making cookies to be

distributed to the staff of Westmead hospital with cards to

match and creating fresh bread rolls to accompany hot meals

to the homeless.

Band 2020: The school bands are entirely coordinated and run by parent volunteers. A number of the

band committee parents will be leaving at the end of this year. . To enable band to continue we require

additional parents to join the committee. In particular we will have vacancies in the roles of:

- band convener (support available to guide or share this position)

- Instrument coordinator

- music copier

- events coordinator (organises Grandparents Day and Gala Night)

- junior band coordinators x2

- General committee member x2

Please consider helping out. Contact Jane or the band coordinators to discuss any of the above roles.

Year 2 blow-test/Joining Junior Band 2020

On Thurs 21st November, all year 2 students were given the opportunity to make some noise and try playing

some of the concert band instruments. Results of this trial were sent home with the students along with

information about joining the band.

If your child is interested in joining the band completed notes should be returned to the teacher by Friday

29th November. Alternatively scan and send the form to band@lcwps.com.au

Want to play the drums? Percussion Trial next Monday 25th November at lunch time: Students interested

in playing percussion in the band next year are asked to attend a separate trial at lunch time in the hall.

Please reassure your child we do not expect them to be able to play. A tutor will be present to demonstrate

and instruct them

Students currently in Year 3-5 are also welcome to join the band program next year. No previous

experience necessary. Please contact Jane at band@lcwps.com.au for more information.

Band Gala Night: Wednesday 4th December

This is the culmination of a year of rehearsals. Please join us to listen to each of our bands perform. All

welcome. No charge.

Students must arrive in band uniform at 630pm

Concert commences at 7pm. Concludes approx 8.15pm

Solo Challenge: Week 9

All band students are encouraged to choose a fun piece of music and start practicing for their Solo

Challenge. These will be performed in band rehearsal during week 9 (either 10th or 12th Dec). Jazz

students will complete the Solo Challenge during their Senior/Concert rehearsal time.

Students should choose their own piece of music to play as a solo (not a band piece)

Ask your tutor for help.

Search online or in music shops for a piece arranged for your instrument

Percussion may use a backing tape. Accompaniment is not required for other instruments

Timing: 60 sec for junior band; 90-120 sec for Senior/Concert Band

Students who participate gain a sense of accomplishment and will also receive a book voucher. The aim is

to challenge yourself, try a new piece and have some fun.

Return of Band Hire Instruments:

All instruments hired through the school band are due to be returned following the Solo Challenge in week

9. Please advise your tutor you will not be available for a lesson in the final week of school. Instruments

are cleaned and serviced throughout the holidays and must be returned. Final date for return of hire

instruments is Friday 13 December following the Year 3-6 presentation assembly.

Hire of instruments in 2020:

Each year priority for hire of school instruments is given to new students in Junior Band. Following

allocation to junior band, remaining instruments will be offered to students in Senior/Concert Band. Please

note the following exceptions regarding instrument hire:

Students hiring French Horn, Baritone Horn or Trombone will be able to hire school band

instruments from year 3-6 whilst they remain a member of the band

Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet and Oboe are offered for hire to students entering into Senior

Band to expand the depth of the band

Current band students interested in being placed on a waitlist to hire an instrument next year should email

band@lcwps.com.au

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account.

You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence

and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away.

They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit

wallet.

School Banking day is Thursday. Each week you need to bring your deposit wallet to canteen window.

Chess Club

Chess Club is open to students from Year 1 and operates Mondays 3.30pm-4.30pm in the Year 5

Classrooms. Children enrolled in OOSH can still attend and will be escorted to OOSH at the end of class. Run

by the Sydney Academy of Chess, the club caters for beginners to advanced players and offers the

opportunity to participate in friendly interschool tournaments during the year.

Lane Cove West Public School P&C Association Position Descriptions - 2020

The Annual General Meeting of the P&C will be held on Thursday 28 November 2019 and will be advertised in Chatters and the P&C Facebook page.

All office bearers must be elected annually. At the AGM, all roles are declared open and anyone may nominate for a position. This year, a number of roles must be vacated and we must have new volunteers for President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Band Coordinator (among others) for 2020.

Being involved in the P&C Executive is a great way to contribute to your school, both through providing ideas and input into school projects, helping to build a vibrant school community, or helping to raise funds to support out school.

The current member in each role is listed under the position along with their contact details so that anyone interested in any of the roles may contact the current position holder, or the President, for additional information. You must be a current financial member to stand, (you can join at the meeting), and it is expected that you will attend meetings regularly and take an active part in the discussions and activities of the P&C. Executive positions can be held by one person for a maximum of three years.

• Ensure onsite and offsite menu compliance under NSW Govt Fresh Tastes @ School Canteen regulations

Treasurer

This role involves:

• Maintaining the P&C’s financial records • Preparation and presentation of financial record at P&C meetings • Preparation of annual budget • Managing payments from the P&C • Receiving/depositing fundraising cash • Updating the financial records and accounts • Arranging the annual audit of the accounts • Administering the bank accounts

The role is supported by the Assistant Treasurer. The role needs to be performed by a qualified accountant, or someone with similar knowledge of financial systems and recordkeeping (e.g. book-keeper).

Band Coordinator

The P&C runs a band program for children in years 3 to 6. The role involves coordinating all aspects of the band program, including:

• Updating contracts for conductors and get them signed. • Check that all Working With Children certificates are up to date for all Tutors. • Liaise with parents regarding instrument tutoring • Liaise with the school and tutors regarding rooms for students lessons • Fortnightly update for Chatters • Apply for music Festivals during the year, help coordinate Workshop days, Tryout day &

Gala Night • General information flow between school, tutors, conductors, committee and parents. • Most importantly along with this role is a very organized, experienced and helpful

committee who will also be there to assist when needed!

Volunteer Coordinator

This role involves the co-ordination of all volunteers associated with fundraising activities:

• Finding Lead Co-ordinators for all events (Mother’s Day, Social Night, Father’s Day, Trivia Night, Spring Fair and other fundraising events)

• Co-ordinating the volunteers to assist with the running of these events both prior to the event and on the day of the event

• Assist individual Event Coordinators and volunteers throughout the year to help ensure the success of their events.

Uniform Shop Liaison

Acts as liaison between the paid Uniform Shop Coordinator and the Executive and reports on issues affecting the running of the Uniform Shop.

Communications and Website Coordinator

Incumbent: Phil Hurrell - phil@hurrell.id.au

The role involves coordinating and preparing communications about P&C activities through Chatters, class parents, Facebook, the website, and any other channel that will reach parents. If you’ve got an interest in marketing, communications, or just think you’d love to help spread the word about what’s on at our school, you’d be great in this role.

Non-Executive Committee Roles

Year Representatives – K, 1 and 2

In 2020, the P&C are proposing to create additional roles for representatives from each of the infants years (K, 1 and 2) to provide an opportunity for newer parents at the school to have a voice in P&C meetings, contribute to various projects the P&C might be working on, and to learn more about the operation of the P&C at the school. These roles are welcome to attend Executive meetings in order to have input to, and get a greater understanding of, the activities of the P&C.

This role involves the coordination and administration of the School Banking programme at the school, including:

• Organise and supervise volunteers to run the programme on a weekly basis. • Weekly Chatters update

Chess Club Coordinator

This role involves the running of the Chess Club, including:

• Liaising with the Sydney Academy of Chess and the school to run afterschool chess classes at the school.

• Promoting the Club through Chatters, take enrolments and manage the administration of the Club.

Free home-based assessment and treatment for 7 to 12 year old children with fear and anxiety disorders.

Does your child become very afraid of certain situations or objects, worry about a lot of things, get very distressed, or try to avoid things they fear?

About the studyOur team at Griffith University may be able to assist you. We are conducting a nationwide study that includes the following services at no cost to families:

• A thorough assessment of your child’s anxiety with a trained psychologist via the telephone;

• Your child receiving one of two kinds of home-based treatments delivered on a PC, laptop or tablet; and

• Two follow-up telephone assessments with a trained psychologist 6- and 12-months after treatment to track your child’s progress.

The study aims to find out if these two treatments are as effective as each other, and which children have the best response to each kind of treatment. This will mean that there are more evidence-based treatments available for helping anxious children.

About the treatmentsEach treatment involves your child completing treatment sessions at home on a PC, laptop or tablet.

Each treatment involves your child learning practical strategies to better manage anxiety.

• One treatment helps children learn to control the focus of their attention on helpful things around them.

• The other treatment helps children learn to think differently and approach things they fear.

Each treatment includes information, telephone or email support for parents in assisting their child to better manage anxiety.

Prior studies have shown that children who complete each treatment experience significant reductions in anxiety.
