Bits & Pieces PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Carol Darou

It’s nice to be back after Christmas. I trust you all had a pleasant holiday.

For those of us who attended the QT in December, it was a wonderful, relaxing time;

a great way to meet other people in our Guild that we don’t have a chance to connect

with at our meetings.

I look forward to the coming year with anticipation. 2015 marks our 25th

anniversary as a Guild and I daresay we have grown up well. Having had the opportunity to visit other guilds this past year, I have to say our Guild really has got

our stuff together.

I am excited about our “Doorway” Challenge this year and look forward to a large display at our quilt

show in August. We are looking for ways in which we can help everyone participate in this Challenge, so

don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are not sure how to go about doing it. Everyone has different techniques and I know there is one out there for you.

Have fun at our Stash Sale this month.

Carol

the second Wednesday of each month. Here are some of the wonderful quilts shown:

LCQG’s 25th Anniversary

Challenge “Doorways to the Silver Anniversary

of LCQG - 25 Years of Quilting Together”

Only four months left for you to decide on your “doorway” and complete your Challenge item.

Executive Meeting Report — January 2015

Carol Darou thanked Anna Cornel for hosting this meeting. President (Carol Darou) - advised that donations collected for LAWS and The Table were significant. Friends of the Tay Watershed has thanked the Guild for the charity quilt and advised that the quilt winner was Leanne Merriman of Smiths Falls. An update was given on the November Sale. After discussion, it was agreed that we would not make a donation to the Quilt of Belonging this year. Vice President (Marilyn Robinson) - gave an update on the December QT. Past President (Jean Sherwin) - advised that three positions need to be filled, and some amendments will be required to the By-Laws in May. An announcement of the change(s) will appear in the March and April newsletters. Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - the Treasurer’s Report was reviewed and accepted. Block of the Month (Cathy Price) - showed the next row to be worked. Library (Marie Amyot) - presented the five books acquired for the Library this month. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - No report. Newsletter (Lynne Green) - 91 members have requested the newsletter by email. Linda Bates will be preparing the February newsletter in Lynne’s absence. Outreach (Anna Cornel) - there were four applicants for this year’s charity quilt which were voted on. The annual

bursary will go to Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute this year. Program (Alexis Mongeau) - provided an outline of what is planned over the next few months. Social (Barb Dodds) - advised that Lois Roberts will not be continuing with the Social Committee next year.

November 2014 Meeting Review

We had 97 members and two visitors attending the November meeting. Door prizes were donated by Carol Darou and Joan Gillespie. The winners were Mara Harrison, Linda Bradshaw, Judith Dow, and Joanne Snow. The winner of the Ott Light draw was Elaine McCargar. It was a small Show and Tell compared to October’s meeting, with only 14 items. However, all items had the usual high standard of work. Carol Darou thanked Barbara Halpin for arranging tonight’s snacks in memory of one of her friends, and asked members to help the social committee clean up after the meeting. She advised that the Christmas Sale was well attended. Carol then asked members to help our photographer by clearly printing their names and giving a description of their show and tell items on the list so that she can match the items on the list with the person’s name. Some dishes were left at the sale and will be placed on the snack table for people to collect. Carol advised that someone is needed to take over being in charge of the April Retreat; the venue has been booked already. Carol then distributed name tags to the following people: Marilyn Lockyer, Cathy Kulas, Sally Bannerman, Laurielle Chabeaux, Sharon Riviere, and Deborah Ward. Marilyn Robinson thanked everyone who donated items to the Christmas sale. She advised that this is the last chance to sign up for the QT on December 3. Cathy Price showed the Flying Geese row for the block of the month; people have two months to get this done or catch up. Marie Amyot showed this month’s library books and gave a brief description on each.

In Anna Cornel’s absence, Carol reminded members that the blocks for this year’s Outreach charity quilt are to be handed in tonight to Carole Armstrong. Bev Davidge reminded members to start their “Doorways” challenge item. Carol Darou advised that Sue Matte has volunteered to head up the committee for our 25th Anniversary event.

Library

Tula Pink's City Sampler, 100 Modern Quilt Blocks by American quilter and fabric designer, Tula Pink, contains instructions for making five modern city-themed sampler quilts in different sizes from throw to king. Patterns are given for one hundred six-inch blocks divided into groups based on crosses, rectangles, triangles, strips, squares, and haiku.

The Quilter's Home, Winter by Louise Fletcher has patterns for projects that use fusible-web applique, paper piecing, or a combination of the two techniques. A variety of winter motifs are given for making wall quilts, a table topper, place mats, and

other small projects that are so quick to make that you can complete them in an afternoon. Visit the website www.PeaceByPieceDesigns.com

Quilts That Celebrate Autumn and Winter by Karen Combs,

Bethany S. Reynolds and Joan Shay features four quilt projects that make use of Magic Stack-n-Whack, 3-D Appli-bond, and other creative techniques. Did you know that you can easily piece several layers of bonded fabric with an Appli-bond needle which has three very sharp cutting edges? This book is available from the American Quilter's Society, www.AmericanQuilter.com

Thanks to Louise McDiarmid for donating:

Attic Windows by Diana Leone which gives step-by-step, illustrated instructions for making this popular quilt design in wall, twin, double and queen sizes. Thirty colour photos are included.

The Careless Quilter by Kristin Miller lets you design your own medallion quilt as you go starting with the center block to which you add borders. No measurements or patterns are given. Each new border is added by making choices and correcting mistakes. Chapter 1 begins with a quote by W. C. Magee: “The man who makes no mistakes does not usually

make anything.” ~ Marie ~

Block of the Month

Welcome back after the Christmas holidays. I know you are ready to get back to it. This month our row has two blocks that go together alternating. I am sure you will enjoy sewing these. ~ Cathy ~

Outreach

I am hoping the new outreach quilt will be ready for the March meeting. An almost unanimous vote at

the January 14 Executive meeting awarded the quilt to The Great War Memorial Hospital of Perth District Foundation. This year the Foundation has been asked to purchase two Vital Sign machines for the Emergency Room. These machines are expensive but the Foundation is confident that they will be able to raise enough money through the quilt raffle to pay for one of the units. The draw for the quilt will be on the final afternoon of "Quilts on The Tay".

Last year's quilt (which was raffled by Friends of the Tay Watershed) raised considerably less than usual. ~ Anna ~

Did you know?

As well as on-line shopping, Mad about PATCHWORK now has a brick and mortar location at 2477 Huntley Road, Stittsville. Opening hours are Tues & Wed 10:00-4:00, and Thurs 10:00-8:00. Check out their website at www.madaboutpatchwork.com

It is important that you clearly print your name and give a description or name of your show and tell item rather than just writing, for example, king quilt. A description or quilt name helps our photographer match her photos with the list, and also helps attribute the item to the correct person when a picture is included in the newsletter. Thanks for your help in doing this.

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
