************************************************************************************************************************************** October is one of my favorite months of the year. Things just seen to slow down when October arrives. I think of this month as a small break in the action before the holiday season begins in November and December.

I want to remind all guild members that our semi annual food drive is coming up in November. Rosemary will soon publish a list of needs from the Lebanon Christian Ministries Food Bank. Just like last year, my car will be open for all of the donations. We did very well last year and I am hoping to do so again.

When the new business section of our October meeting rolls around I am going to introduce the idea of forming a long range planning committee. I feel that we need to plan for the guild’s future. I am hoping to find four guild members who would be willing to meet with a chairman (to be named later) to begin to gather ideas about all aspects of our guild. If this interests you and you would like to be involved please see me personally or email me.

I know some of you have been having trouble emailing me so let me try to clear it up. The first letter in my email address is a lower case l - not an i. It is: [email protected]

I am also looking for suggestions to make our December Christmas party a bit more fun. Have any ideas????

Secretary’s Minutes: Filling in, Kathy Foltz

The September 5th, 2017 meeting of Lebanon Quilters Guild was called to order at 6:30 by vice-president, Pat Krall.

Pat extended a big thank you to those members who came early to set up the room. Those in attendance were reminded to pay their dues for the upcoming year, if they have not already done so. Dues are $20 for the year. If dues are already paid, you may see Sue Bechtel for your membership card. There were three new members tonight and two visitors.

The Secretary’s Report from June was approved with Debbie Newell moving to accept with a second from Cathy Eash. Pat asked for a volunteer to take minutes at the October meeting, as Sue will still be away. That position remains unfilled at this time.

The Treasurer’s Report was approved, with Diana Shurr moving to accept the report and Vicki Nice seconding.

It was announced that the board is considering contributing money toward an educational grant for some worthy person or organization. Guild members are being asked to think who might benefit from such a contribution and to suggest a dollar value. It is suggested that, although not a necessity, it would be nice to keep the contribution within Lebanon County and be textile oriented. Rosemary Stieg will include a form in the weekly update to nominate for this grant. The form should be given to Donna Sherk or Pat Krall. The board desires that the membership be included in this decision.

The Budget for the 2017-2018 year was discussed. A member was concerned that she could not find previous years budg-ets on the Guild’s website. It was noted that they have been there in the past and should be there now. Another member mentioned that she has a problem with the guild having an excessive amount of money in the treasury and cutting back on the community service budget. It was explained that $2800 was taken out of the guild money to balance this year’s budg-et in an effort to spend down money on hand. The Board is looking to the membership for ideas to help spend down our funds; this is the reason the board is looking for a way to help someone or an organization in the community, as mentioned earlier in the evening. There was also a question as to whether the Guild does anything for Phil Haven to thank them for the use of their facility. Although we have contributed quilts and blankets in the past we have not given them anything this past year. At one time$200 was given to Phil Haven for the use of the room for a year. Deb Reb moved to accept the budget as presented. Maggie Culbert seconded. The budget was accepted with a vote of 59 for and 13 against. There was no Corresponding Secretary’s Report

Community Service: No Report

Newsletter: No Report

Quilt Show: There will be a Quilt Show Newsletter coming out in the next two weeks. The show will be two days this year, Friday, November 10th and Saturday, November 11th. Christeena Stamm will take our quilt show fliers to The Oaks Quilt Show on the first day of their show. In response to a question about Judy Bitner being listed on our fliers as a spon-sor of the quilt show, it was explained that Judy came to us and asked to be a sponsor. In addition to her donation to the quilt show, her sponsorship indicates her endorsement of our show. She will receive preference for a set up place for her vendor booth at the show. Donations continue to come in for the quilt show: baskets, mug rugs, books and other handmade items. Very soon the online sign up for helping with the show will be ready. Members will be notified when it is ready so they can begin signing up to help with the show.

Raffle Quilt: At this time there is no raffle quilt for next year. If anyone would like to donate one, let the board know. The board may consider raffling a top. If you have a quilt you would like the board to consider raffling off, please contact Donna Sherk.

Programs: Linda Hahn will be doing the October program. She has recently moved to Florida. Because of this she will need transportation to and from the airport and to and from her hotel. A number of guild members have volunteered to chauffer her. She will be doing a workshop on October 3rd at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, as well. Currently there are thirteen members who have signed up to take the workshop. If twenty people do not sign up, Sue will open it up to other guilds this week. Karen Kay Buckley is presenting a class at the Mifflintown Guild on October 31st. Cathy Eby will gather the details of that class and it will be published in our weekly update.

Ways and Means: Sue Bechtel won the basket.

Block of the Month: This year’s theme is “Trip Around the World.” This month’s block is Mississippi and was won by Diana Shurr. Next month’s block is Vermont, to be done in blues and greens.

Charms: Anita Clagett won this month’s charms. Next month’s charm color is orange.

Sharon True made the announcement that she is organizing a trip to Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, Missouri. The trip is scheduled for May 7-12. The cost is $550 per person. Sign-up sheets were passed around at the meeting. $100 deposit is required to secure a seat on the bus. Contact Sharon for more information. She has a planned itinerary.

Our next meeting will be October 2 at 6:30 P.M.

The meeting was adjourned after a wonderful Show and Tell.

Respectfully submitted, Kathy Foltz, substituting for Sue Mechura

Through the years, you have been generous in your donations of fabric, time, and finished projects. Thank you for your generosity. I know that some of you do not have the time to shop or the financial means to participate. We try to have kits available for everyone who wishes to complete them.

I apologize if I offended members with my first meeting information. As was pointed out at our September meeting, the budget is not set in stone. We have an amount of funds to work with and it can be added to if needed. We will have kits available for ALL who wish to help in our endeavor to comfort others with our quilts and pillowcases.

Thank you to Sharon True for bringing a bolt of 30 yds. of polyester batting donated by someone. Bags and boxes of fabric (sometimes scraps, sometimes yards) are here at my home to be put into kits. If anyone wishes to help sort and cut this fabric for kits, please call me at (717) 273-1461. If I don't answer, please leave a message.

We collect all through the year for the Pennsylvania National Guard distribution. Domestic Violence quilts are also collected throughout our year but the big ‘Day of Caring’ is in the Spring and the June meeting for presentation. Pillowcases are collected every month for Hershey due to the continued and immediate need. Again, thank you.

An audit of the Lebanon Quilter's Guild took place on August 24, 2017 for the period of August 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017. In attendance were Gina L. Groff, Treasurer, Fran LaPine, member, who regularly reconciles the bank statements, Deb Reb and Gillian Arnick, members, who volunteer as auditors for the guild. There were no outstanding issues and all record keeping was in order. Respectfully, Gina L. Groff

PillowTalk by Jeanette Henning

October greetings! I would like to share a few emails that I typically receive on any given day in order to give you an idea of the far-reaching impact that happens when you share the pillowcase project with others:

Hi Jeanette, Buchanan Trail Quilters, Waynesboro, PA would like to make pillowcases for Case for Smiles in lieu of our usual gift exchange at our Christmas party. At our first meeting in September, I will be presenting your program and would appreciate any helpful hints, suggestions, etc., that I might pass on. I believe someone mentioned “no red” fabrics, so things like that would be beneficial in helping our guild members select their supplies. Please contact me at any time via email or phone (xxx-xxx-xxxx)-I’m looking forward to working with you on this project. Becky-Greencastle, PA

Jeanette, I am Karen XXXXX. I make pillowcases for a group near me and I’d like to send some to your chapter, as well. If you could provide an address (and any other information particular to your group), I’d love to send some pillowcases to you. Thank you so much, Karen-New Jersey. PS-does your email address indicate that you are a Wizard of Oz fan?! (Side note for those who do not email me, my email address is [email protected]).

Hello Ms. Henning, You are listed as the Coordinator for the Hershey chapter of Case for Smiles. My Cadette Girl Scout troop from Waynesboro, PA is currently sewing pillowcases to donate to your organization for our Silver Award project. I see there are drop-off locations on the website. But I was wondering if we could meet with you (or someone else affiliated with the organization) when we are ready to drop these off that could talk briefly to the girls about the program and that we could possibly get a few pictures with? I know we are not able to go directly to the hospital, but because this is their Silver Award (which is the highest award the Girl Scouts of this age can earn), I’d like to do a little some thing special with them to bring this endeavor to a close. Our project needs to be completed by September, so I’d like to plan to drop the completed pillowcases off on or around Septem ber 23rd. I look forward to hearing back from you regarding this request. Nancy-Troop Leader

I respond to each and every email as soon as I receive them and I am always happy to respond favorably to any and all requests and because of this, I have had the pleasure of meeting (physically, thru email or by phone) so many wonderful ladies. In most of my conversations, I mention that not only am I the Coordinator of the Chapter, I am a member of the Lebanon Quilters Guild and I get to share all of the Guild’s participation in the pillowcase project.

So thanks for your continued support in making “SMILES” so that we can help kids feel better to heal better…………….. ……………….…one pillowcase at a time.
