what does “August by the lake” make you think of?The question, more or less in those words,

came from Lakeside photographer Brian Schoenhals. My answer, more or less, was, “Hot … I picture sitting on a dock dangling my feet in the water.”

The words had barely left my mouth before Brian had a complete — and quite different — picture in mind, and over the next several days he set about cap-turing his mental picture in digital form.

Brian knew just where to go to frame his shot. The boardwalk at Horizons on Logan Martin offered spectacular views of the summer sunset across the lake. He also had a candidate couple in mind, but before he took them out to Horizons to set up the shot, he made a pre-liminary visit to test the view, the changing light as the sun went down, even the panorama of clouds.

Finally satisfied that he’d found the perfect spot and had determined the best way to shoot it, he brought Pete Strickland and wendy Capps to the boardwalk, parked them at the water’s edge and instructed them to enjoy the free show put on nearly every day by the sun, clouds and lake.

The result, chosen from hundreds of images Brian shot that evening, is this issue’s cover.

Now, more than ever, I’m hoping for a chance, like you, to dangle my toes in Logan Martin to relieve the heat of August.

I don’t know what woke me — the sound of waves licking the shoreline or the brightly lit moon over-head.I sat up in my makeshift bed, rubbed my eyes for

a moment and began absorbing the peaceful nighttime surroundings along Logan Martin Lake, part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail.

when I had retired for the evening, there was no moon. I was surprised when I woke up in the middle of the night to see a moon that wasn’t quite full high overhead. About the only lights I saw before I fell asleep were from passing boats, as their pilots carefully made their way up and down the lake in darkness. After about 10:30 p.m., the boat traffic pretty much came to a stop, and I drifted off to sleep.

My latest journey down the Alabama Scenic River Trail took me to a new development called The yacht Club.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is a continuing series written by David Atchison, Lakeside Magazine writer and Daily Home Pell City news editor, about his experiences as he travels down the Logan Martin stretch of the Alabama River Trail.

Melissa Daniel gave me the green light to camp on the shores of The yacht Club, a new residential development in the making. The sluggish economy slowed the develop-ment at the end of Funderburg Bend Road, but The yacht Club is becoming a reality.

I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect spot to set up my backpacking tent on the shore of Logan Martin Lake.

The yacht Club developers have left a common area at the point of the development. It is a perfect spot to relax, have a cookout and enjoy the lake. The setting reminds me of a state park. It had plenty of shade, a picnic table, grills and couple of piers to fish from.

I believe there are future plans to add a pool at the end of the point, which would only enhance the view of the lake for residents. I was probably camping in the opening where the pool would actually be constructed.

I pitched my tent in the open spot because I wanted to be able to look up at the night sky.

My tent has large screen opening, but comes with a rain fly. If it rains, I can quickly cover my tent, but there was no rain.

I cooked rice and chicken from their original packages during my last campout along Logan Martin Lake. I put the food containers in boiling water and mixed the two after they got hot. I then put the mixture on tortillas and ate. It was easy, delicious and involved no cleanup afterward.

The night held only clear skies, stars and the moon. It was also perfect camping weather, not the normal muggy, hot sum-mer day or night. There was a steady cool breeze.

This new development is going to have a mixture of condo-miniums, townhouses and large custom homes, I’m told.

I thought to myself, what a paradise. The yacht Club, which is on the St. Clair County side

of Logan Martin Lake, even has its own little island. I almost camped there, but logistically, the point made better sense.

It was Friday when I set up camp. I wanted to get everything set up at my campsite before boarding my kayak and paddling upstream from where I had last traveled, Bayou Slough.

I first paddled to The yacht Club’s island. They call it Paradise Island. I got out of my kayak and explored, at least what I could. I was wearing shorts. If I had worn regular long pants, I could have walked the entire island, but I saw enough. It’s a great place for an island rendezvous for The yacht Club residents.

After my island visit, I got back into my kayak and contin-ued my journey upstream. This area has an abundance of birds, and a great variety. Egrets, herons and Canada geese, as well as other species of birds are frequently seen in this area.

About a mile or so up river, I had someone, or should I say something, swim out into the water to investigate me and my boat.

“He’s only 10 weeks old,” Nick Doty of Locust Fork told me.

Doty’s Airedale terrier swam almost to the side of my boat. The young pup craned his head high above the water, like he didn’t want to get his chin wet, attempting to see the top of my boat and how I managed to get into this long, narrow rig.

“I come here pretty often,” Doty said. “I love it down here.”It didn’t take long to find out that Doty was a fellow kay-

aker. He lives in Locust Fork, so that doesn’t surprise me. The Locust Fork River is a great whitewater river destination, with

Surprise, surprise, a flock of geese found me camping in a place they normally feed.

plenty of Class 2-3 rapids. Doty said Trapp, his young pup, loves the water about

as much as he does. we talked a little longer before I continued my trip

upstream. I paddled along the St. Clair County side of the lake. It was too busy on the lake for me to attempt cross-ing to the Talladega side, but I covered four or five miles that day.

A mallard drake kept me company part of the way, swimming just ahead of my kayak.

Also on the way back to The yacht Club, I spotted a blue heron perched high above the water on long pole. I snapped the bird’s picture before it flew off across the lake.

I was pretty worn out by the time I made it back to The yacht Club. I relaxed for a while and drank a couple of Cokes before starting dinner.

I brought my backpacking stove and pot, which I haven’t used in a while. I only carried what I thought I could fit inside my boat. I’m sort of preparing for an over-nighter at a camp site accessible only by boat.

I bought several packages of Uncle Ben’s Ready Rice for this and future trips. Even though the package instruc-

tion on the rice container says it’s for microwave use, I figured the thick plastic bag could be placed in a pot of boiling water and to cook the rice. I was right. I contacted Uncle Ben’s, and a company rep sent me instructions.

I cooked the Ready whole Grain Medley Santa Fe on this trip. It has brown rice, red and white wheat, black beans, corn, peppers, cilantro and seasonings.

I also bought a small sealed aluminum bag of Tyson Premium Chunk white chicken. I also heated it up in boil-ing water.

After I boiled both packages for 15-20 minutes, I opened the bag of rice and poured the heated chicken into the rice bag.

I mixed and scooped out the mixture, putting it on soft tortillas. It was great, and there was zero clean-up. This was perfect for a quick camp meal, and it really did hit the spot.

Shortly after I ate, I had some unexpected visitors. At first I thought it was Rick Euler, someone who has paddled with me before, driving up to my camp site. He has a week-end place at Powell’s Hideaway, which is only across the slough from where I was camping. He knew I was camping at The yacht Club.

To my surprise, it wasn’t Rick. It was Paul Story, the city’s building inspector, and his wife, Shawn.

I couldn’t believe it. For a minute I thought Paul was there to condemn my

tent, but he was going to do nothing of the sort. It was just a friendly visit.

Paul apparently lives in one of the townhouses at The yacht Club.

“we love it here,” he said. I can understand why, I told him. “This is beautiful,” I said.The development, I believe, has more than a mile of

shoreline. It’s just a gorgeous place to live. The last person I would ever have thought meeting

there that day was Paul, but that’s traveling on Logan Martin Lake. you never know who you’re going to meet or see. we visited and talked for a little while longer before Paul and Shawn went back to their townhouse.

After a very long day and feeling a little worn out, I

just had to try a pick-me-up snack before I went to bed — Neapolitan ice cream.

Actually it was “freeze-dried” ice cream, and let me tell you, there is a right way and a wrong way to eat this stuff.

The first piece I put into my mouth, I tried to chew it up. what a mistake. It felt like chewing a piece of Styrofoam. I finally figured out how you eat it. you just let the freeze-dried ice cream savor in your mouth. It doesn’t take any time for it to rehydrate, soften and to begin tasting like, well, like warm ice cream.

Of the three flavors, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, I liked the strawberry best, and I’m not a big strawberry ice cream eater. I generally prefer vanilla.

Anyway, it was pretty darn good, and I look forward to eating some more freeze-dried ice cream along the Alabama Scenic River Trail again.

Golf carts aren’t only for golf anymore.Known primarily for carrying the 18-

hole enthusiasts and their gear across the links, golf carts now are being used for scooting around the neighborhood or simply for recreation.

And, as with all “toys,” somebody is going to want to own the nicest one on the block.

That’s where dealers like Darrell Harper come in. Harper and his employees at Southland Golf Carts

perform a variety of customizations, along with regu-lar maintenance. They also sell new and refurbished golf carts and do rentals.

Harper estimates he sells 300 golf carts a year, mostly to local customers. He said many people bought them specifically for use around Lake Logan Martin. ”Especially on the Talladega side (of the lake), where you have all the hills, you see a lot of people using them to go back and forth bringing stuff down to their

a simple hobby he and his youngest son enjoyed together.

“He’s in college now,” Harper said. “He was always very mechanically inclined, good with his hands.”

Nearly nine years later, Harper said he has “been blessed” to find success in his venture.

But how much can you really do to “trick out” a golf cart?

He said one Harley rider in Texas came to him looking to get his cart look-ing more like his bike.

Harper said he had it fixed up in plenty of time for his customer’s trip to Daytona.

They are an amazing group of senior ladies who look for-ward to Mondays, when they meet for a round of golf at Alpine Bay Country Club. Don’t be surprised if their

scores after 18 holes of golf and their ages are pretty close to the same.

Ranging from age 58 to 86, these ladies are members of the Alpine Bay Ladies Golf Association, and they have the time of their lives every Monday. Their final scores are not important; what matters is that they have a great time with each other. And they do every time they step out onto the golf course.

Through the years, more than 40 ladies have been members of the group.

Evelyn Self, 78, said she has been playing there since 1986.“It was already a big swing then,” Self said. “We play every

Monday, year round, weather permitting.

Self said when she first started back in the mid-1980s, she thought she would never be able to do it.

“But I have met so many wonderful ladies through the years,” Self said. “You have friends from here to south Alabama all the way north, east and west. We play in tournaments, and we just have a good time. I don’t think any of us could ever say we are professionals. Playing golf keeps me in shape and keeps me going.

Helen Blackmon, 86, has been playing at Alpine Bay since 1983 and has played golf more than 60 years. She is a member of the Clanton Country Club.

“I started playing here when it was Point Aquarius,” Blackmon said. I’ve never had a hole-in-one, but I sure have tried through the years. I’ve rolled over the hole many times.”

Despite all her years playing golf, Blackmon remains modest about her ability. When asked if she had ever hit a spectator on one of her shots, Blackmon said she

hadn’t, but she has been hit.“It’s wonderful these other ladies even allow me

to play with them every week,” Blackmon said. “I have played better golf than I do now. Much better, but as long as they let me play with them, I’ll keep coming.”

Patti Wilcox, 62, is one of four retired physical edu-cation teachers in the group. Wilcox taught for 28 years.

Being in this group of ladies reunited Wilcox with a sorority sister from Ole Miss, Gretchen Finn, whom she had not seen since they graduated from college in the late 1960s.

“It was two years ago on the 16th hole, and I could not believe Gretchen was there,” Wilcox said. “I had only known one Gretchen in my life, and, sure enough, it was her.”

Wilcox, who has been playing with this group for four years, said she enjoys it because she meets so many great people.

“We play in tournaments and laugh the whole time we are out there,” Wilcox said. “This helps me stay in shape.”

Gail Sharman, 58, is the baby of the group. She retired as a physical education teacher in 1999 and had played tennis her whole life. When she married in 1992, her husband played golf and she played tennis.

“Through the years, both our knees got bad and we neither could play tennis anymore,” Sharman said. “He taught me how to play golf right after we got married, and I’ve been playing ever since. Since then, he has stopped playing golf but I continue to play. I love it and I love being here. I was sort of bummed out about turning 50, but now that I am retired and can play golf with these ladies every Monday, turning 50 wasn’t so bad after all.”

Sharman has been playing with the group for the past decade. Seven years ago, she stopped putting off knee-replacement surgery because she was unable to swing her golf clubs well.

“When it got to where I couldn’t play 18 holes of golf, I knew it was time to have the knee done. Now, it is great exercise for me to get out here and walk and play. It’s been wonderful.”

Gretchen Finn, 64, has been playing golf for 36 years and joined the ladies group at Alpine Bay two years ago. She taught physical education and girls’ golf in West Palm Beach, Fla., before retiring and moving here.

“Meeting back up with Patti has been fantastic,” Finn said. “Playing with the women is awesome. I had actually quit playing golf for three years until I found Alpine Bay. I am retired, but I teach at Central Alabama Community College two days per week.”

Evelyn Stevens, 81, has been playing golf for 40 years. She started playing with this group in the mid 1990s.

“We all have a lot of fun,” Stevens said. “We play with a lot of dif-ferent ones each week. The conversation is different each week, and it’s just a lot of fun. We have two ladies who come from Clanton, and one

“I never have been real good at it,” she said, “but I have had a hole-in-one.”

McDaniel hit a hole-in-one at her home course at Grayson Valley, where she actually lives on the golf course. It was 130 yards, and it brought laughter to the group of ladies when McDaniel said she used a driver to hit her most memorable shot.

“I thought I had gone past the green,” McDaniel said. “I went looking for the ball, and my partner said it was in the hole. We didn’t get to see it go in the hole.”

The Pell City Police Department Marine Patrol Unit answers service calls throughout the community. Their goal is to respond to calls within five minutes.

For anyone who has a problem on Logan Martin Lake, help is just minutes away, thanks to The Pell City Police Department’s new Marine Patrol Unit.

“Assuring that there are no accidents, drownings, bur-glaries, thefts and other hazards are the goals of this pro-gram,” said Pell City Police Chief Greg Turley. “Because of our intimate knowledge of our community and ownership of issues, it is our goal to be under way within five minutes of any call.”

The program, begun at the end of last year’s season in a response to theft on the lake, is in its first full summer of operation. It has met with success so far, Turley said.

“Ask anyone and they’ll tell you that the biggest benefit for living in Pell City is the people, the lake, and the qual-ity-of-life,” he said. “Anyone who lives or recreates on the lake can tell you that the biggest threat to those benefits are litter, reckless operators, and theft.”

Turley said Pell City’s Marine Patrol program has sev-eral missions.

“The primary mission is to protect the properties and assets of the citizens of Pell City on the waterways and insure the best quality of life for its citizens,” he said.

Other goals are to assist the limited resources of the Alabama Marine Police Division, when necessary, and to reduce and eliminate litter and illegal dumping into Logan

Whether for a crime or an emergency, Pell City’s new Marine Patrol is on call when you have a problem on the water.

Turley said it is important that residents know they should notify the Police Department of all problems, suspicious activi-ties and incidents on the lake.

“Whether the need is for a tow-in, fuel, or (to report) sus-picious activity, our officers are going to be responsive to the needs of the community and respond in a timely, professional matter,” he said. “Right now, the only state marine officer in Pell City’s jurisdiction has to also serve Lay Lake. The Pell City Police Department does not plan to replace his duties, but only complement them.”

Turley said the 25-foot Marine Police boat being used was donated by the Alabama Marine Police in 2009. The patrol boat features two 150-horsepower engines and an array of police equipment, including an HD underwater sonar that is used for

rescues, recovery and location of evidence and hazards.The vessel is scheduled to be displayed at numerous com-

munity events this summer, and the officers can be scheduled to speak at any community or educational event year-round.

A Victorian RetreatTerry and Judy Mixon have created a lakeside home whose beauty blooms with heirloom gardens and family treasures.

They fell in love with Logan Martin Lake years ago, when they used to visit from their home in Jacksonville to go camping and skiing.

That was in the 1970s and ’80s, and both Terry and Judy Mixon were still working full-time.

When their daughter moved to a home in one of Pell City’s lakeside areas, that made the lake all the more invit-ing.

In 1988, the Mixons found their sprawling spot on the water’s edge and built their charming Victorian-style home. They say they’re just as happy now as the day they moved in 22 years ago.

The Mixons’ home sits in the middle of a broad

peninsula, with clutches of hydrangea in bloom along the water’s edge and across the grounds. Brick walkways and carefully tended gardens wind through the property, where Mixon finds the perfect spots for the plants he chooses.

Many of them he has rooted and transplanted himself through the years, their popping display a testament to his talents.

Deep blues and lavenders play off white and burgundy combinations of mop-head hydrangeas in dramatic con-trast, and Mixon is adding in oak-leaf hydrangeas through-out the gardens.

Pink azaleas surround the house and bloom earlier in the year, and potted begonias offer color all summer long.

A Victorian Retreat

The Mixons found a Southern Living house plan and made some revisions along the way, ending up with what has been the perfect home for them, they said.

The house has two “fronts,” one facing the water, and the other, the shady lane that leads to the property.

From the drive entry, a covered walkway separates the house from a spacious garage and storage area, which houses not only the cars, but also Mixon’s extensive collec-tion of equipment for keeping the grounds in top shape.

A foyer opens from the walkway and gives entry to the broad living room, which is central to the house.

Walls are painted a light gold, surrounded with deep crown molding and trim in ivory. A wide brick fireplace

accents one wall, where the Mixons incorporated an antique columned mantel.

Ivory lace curtains draped around the floor-to-ceiling windows allow filtered natural light into the room, and fringed Victorian lamps with ivory shades add accent light-ing.

The room is the perfect spot for a Victorian style set-tee, a gift from Judy Mixon’s aunt, covered in gold and bur-gundy floral brocade, set off with a pair of plush armchairs for a cozy visiting area.

The room includes a formal dining area at the far end, with lace table coverings on the carved Jacobean-style din-ing table set with delicate china.

The Mixons’ home features two main entries. One faces the lake; the other, the drive and road.

The table expands to seat eight, and is placed next to a large double-door buffet set with one of Mrs. Mixon’s collection of china tea sets.

There’s a second sitting area in the large room, furnished with a burgundy Victorian settee and chairs.

A roll-top desk is used in the room as well, one the Mixons have had for many years, Judy Mixon said.

From one side of the living room, there’s entry to the lake-front side of the house, where a porch and sunroom offer the Mixons’ favorite place to welcome the sunrise over the water each day and enjoy their morning coffee together.

For sunsets, the other end of the house has the same advan-tage, giving the Mixons the best of both morning and evening views.

From the waterfront porch, walkways lead to a large gazebo, another great gathering place for friends and family or for just enjoying the peaceful setting alone.

From one side of the living and dining area, there’s entry to a light-filled kitchen with broad windows and a breakfast area facing the water.

Glass-front cabinets stained cherry surround the kitchen, where a centered work island provides space for preparing meals and serving, fitted with a Jenn-Air grill and with storage under-neath.

An antique buffet holds more of Judy Mixon’s collection of vintage glassware, a favorite Fenton cake plate and a rose-pat-terned tea set along with other pieces, many of them gifts from friends and family through the years.

The living and dining areas separate two bedroom wings of the Mixons’ home. One holds the master bedroom and bath, where a bay window faces the water and a seating area is fur-nished with an antique settee and matching chairs. The set came from Judy Mixon’s grandmother. “I can still see her sitting there,” she says.

A carved four-poster bed is covered with ivory linens and a quilted spread. A matching dresser holds the memory boxes made for Judy Mixon by her daughter and granddaughter.

Each holds a written memory of a special time together, along with photographs framed together.

The idea for the memory boxes came to her when her daughter asked her what she wanted for Christmas.

“I said, ‘nothing, really,’” Judy recalled. But then she got the idea for the memory boxes and

asked that they write “a memory of a special time with me.”The gift has become a Christmas tradition for the

women.The master bedroom is also where the Mixons placed an

antique apothecary chest fitted with dozens of tiny drawers that were once used for holding medications.

Bedside tables hold glass lamps accented with teardrop-shaped crystals.

The adjoining master bath includes a deep garden tub and walk-in shower, and walls are in rose with white trim. A

pair of glass Victorian light fixtures borders the mirror over the white Victorian-style sink.

The sunroom entry is from the master bath, and one wall includes a vaulted oval window set above the double glass doors leading to a garden outside.

The floor is brick, and furnishings are white wicker topped with floral cushions in roses and greens.

There’s a round wicker table with matching chairs and a chaise lounge nearby, along with the Mixons’ daughter’s min-iature wicker table and chairs.

Down a hall from the opposite end of the living room are two more bedrooms and a bath.

One bedroom holds granddaughter Tiffany’s baby furni-ture, complete with a collection of her stuffed animals.

The second bedroom holds a number of other family pieces, along with a carved four-poster bed and armoire, with its own surprises inside.

This is where Judy Mixon keeps a five-generation quilt that’s been in her family for more than 100 years and a cross-stitched quilt made by an aunt.

The Mixons say they have enjoyed their change to lake living through the years, and their home has been the site of

many special occasions with family and friends.

In April, the Mixons’ home was the site for a friend’s wedding with about 100 guests.

The Mixons have been married 48 years and met as teenagers.

Terry Mixon is retired from Monsanto, and Judy from Jacksonville State University.

They have especially enjoyed their church family in Pell City, at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where Mixon drives the bus for the “Keenagers” group trips every month.

“We have been blessed with good health, good jobs and friends,” Judy Mixon said. “We have truly enjoyed it here, and I can’t imagine being any-where but on the lake.”

Barbecue

For the past six and a half years, people traveling through Pell City, heading either to the lake or back and forth between Birmingham and Atlanta, have been taking

advantage of Golden Rule Barbecue.Of course, according to General Manager John

McCutcheon, there is more to Golden Rule than just barbe-cue. In addition to pork, beef brisket and chicken, the menu also includes such regional favorites as hamburger steak with gravy and onions, shrimp, talipia, salmon and a shrimp and talipia combination on weekends. Collard greens and macaroni and cheese are among the most popular side items. Appetizers include home fries, cheese fries, hot chicken wings, fried green tomatoes and fried pickles.

Each month features a rotating special, including chicken and dress-ing, beef tips and pot roast with rice.

“We smoke pretty much every-thing we can,” McCutcheon said. “Pork butts, ribs, half chickens, wings all start out in the smoker and end up in the pit.

McCutcheon said the restaurant also boasts many homemade deserts, including chocolate, coconut and lemon pies and banana pudding.

For the commuting customer, such as those headed to Logan Martin for a day on the lake, Golden Rule offers a fam-ily pack containing one pound of meat, four buns and a selec-tion of sides.

Daily lunch specials run $5.79, and menu items start at $4.99 and range up to $12.99 or $13.99.

The supper menu ranges from $6.99 to $13.99, with three pieces of meat and two sides, with four-rib and six-rib combi-nations also available.

Travelers on I-20 can’t miss the Golden Rule, since it is marked by signs coming and going. It is located in front of the Pell City Wal-Mart at exit 158. Although the Pell City location has been open for more than six years, Golden Rule Barbecue in Alabama goes back much, much further. According to the company’s Web site, “The first Golden Rule opened its doors in 1891, just a short distance from where the Irondale location is today. The original building was a roadside stop for travelers making the journey to Atlanta. It served the public pork plates (and) beer, sold cigarettes, and with the invention of the auto-mobile, occasionally did automobile repairs. It also served as a gathering spot for the locals in the area, and the Williams fam-ily kept the restaurant in the family for close to 40 years.”

The first franchise was also opened near Birmingham, in 1973. Franchises gradually began opening all over the state and, in 2004, in Georgia. According to the site, Golden Rule has since expanded into Tennessee as well.

lucky enough to have a friend like Julie (Pounders) to let us have it at their house,” the new Mrs. Shirah said. “And it all just came together after that.”

Susan’s aunt, Leamona Jones, her mother, Janice Ford and Julie Pounders got busy planning with the bride to be, and within a month and a half turned the home, grounds and pool into a picture-perfect setting for a lakefront wedding.

“We were lucky there, we had a lot of help,” Susan Shirai said. “And it turned out to be so perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

The team of wedding planners decided to drape the Pounders’ beautifully landscaped property in tiny white lights and make the pool and patio area the bride and groom’s entry to the lakefront gazebo where the ceremony took place.

With a Logan Martin sunset as a backdrop, the Shirais exchanged vows with a crowd of about 100 friends and family members attending.

The theme of the groom’s love of fishing also carried over into another aspect of the wedding: The groom’s cake, of course, was a huge green-frosted large mouth bass with choco-late cake underneath, made by Shannon Cochran of Riverside.

Shirai said. Just about everyone involved, from the minister to the photographer to the planners, had a family connection, making the day even more special.

Performing the service was Susan Shirai’s uncle, Johnny Jones, and in charge of capturing the day with photographs, her cousin, Angela Golden.

The bride’s in-laws-to-be, Cathy and Frank Shirai of Pendelton, Ind., arrived two days early to help out with the preparations, Susan Shirai said, and the almost endless list of helpers also included her own parents, Mike and Janice Ford.

The fishing-pole-bearing ring bearer was nephew Micah Phillips, who, by the way, came up with the idea of delivering the rings with a fishing pole himself. The junior bridesmaid was the bride’s niece, Mollie Phillips.

The sister of the bride, Roxanne Phillips, was matron of honor, and the best man was Mark Shirai’s good friend, Craig Rogers of Pendleton, Ind.

One of the bride’s best friends, Matthew Jackson, was the DJ, providing dance music for the occasion.

The Shirais met in January of this year through a relative of Susan’s who works with Mark.

The couple enjoyed another celebration in July hosted by Shirai’s parents in his hometown in Indiana, planned for those who couldn’t make the trip to Alabama for the wedding.

They took a honeymoon trip to Panama City, and enjoyed a week there before returning home.

One of the most humorous moments in the wedding, aside from the fishing pole ring delivery, was when the “tail” on the groom’s cake started to melt.

Another funny moment was when the Pounders’ cat decided to accompany the wedding party in their walk around the pool.

“Everyone just laughed,” the bride recalled.Her favorite moment, she said, though there were so many,

was the departure she and her husband made from the wedding.“The moonlight on the water was just beautiful,” she said.

Energy Absorption Systems Inc.’s “Easi V” competed in the Business & Industry Division at last year’s regatta, finishing with a time of 1:24.

Some cardboard, a lot of duct tape, and daubs of paint make for fun times on the waters of Logan Martin Lake.

The challenge each year is to build a vessel that will not only float, but speed ahead to victory as quickly as possible.

The catch is you can use only six materials to build that boat: corrugated cardboard, duct tape, silicone sealant, construction adhesive, paint and paraffin wax.

It’s not as easy as it sounds, and duct taping almost every square inch of a boat takes a while. I can personally attest to that, because I’ve built two boats so far and am working on a third for this year’s race.

Sometimes it works quite well, and sometimes those crafts sink spectacularly, to be fished out by their soaked occupants.

Hundreds of spectators line the shore, cheering for the participants and making bets on which boats will float and how far. It’s always fun to see how well the boats fare, because some boats that look as though they would sink like a rock end up winning, while other very pretty, water-worthy-looking vessels end up sinking not 10 feet from the shore.

This year, the sixth Annual Float Yer Boat Regatta, sponsored by the Pell City Civitan Club, is Aug. 21 at Lakeside Park. Boat check-in is at 8 a.m., with races beginning at 9 a.m.

Boats are prejudged, for most look vastly different after racing, if they remain in one piece.

As with any competition, there are a few rules.If, upon inspection, the boat has been made with illegal

materials, it will be disqualified from the race and any other competition associated with the regatta.

The vessels may not come into contact with each other, and no splashing of water during the race is allowed.

No motors of any type may be used. All participants must wear Coast Guard approved life preservers.

There are three classes for this year’s competition. Class I (Youth) is for participants ages 12 and under. There is a maximum occupancy of two people per vessel.

Class II (Adult) is for participants ages 13 and older, and also has a maximum occupancy of two people per vessel.

Class III (Team) includes businesses, industries, churches, etc. There is a maximum occupancy of eight people per vessel.

During the competition, all crew must be in the boat. No towing or holding the vessel afloat with life jackets or legs is allowed.

No alcohol is permitted.Boats must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects or other

hazards.The regatta registration form offers several tips on boat

construction.

And, of course, there are awards for those who excel in cardboard-boat building and paddling.

The Captain’s Award takes into account team dress (costumes), team involvement with spectators and crowd response, decorations of the site on land and team spirit during the competition and at the finish line.

The Pride of the Fleet Award takes into account creativity, innovativeness and uniqueness, and floatability and movement in the water.

The Titanic Award takes into account the most dramatic sinking, the best effort not to sink, and cleanup. All pieces of the boat must be retrieved and disposed of appropriately.

There are also awards for speed, including first, second and third places for all classes.

what you can find at Talladega’s Presbyterian Oaks.“We pull in people from the Pell City area and

the Alpine and Winterboro area,” service coordinator Darlene Touart said.

“We have several who even come from Anniston,” man-ager Debbie Gano added.

Several of the residents have family who live on or near Logan Martin Lake. Gano lives in South Bend at the lake and likes how close Presbyterian Oaks is to her home.

The drawing power of the 20-acre apartment complex in east Talladega comes from several key assets, including two new additions that have added 43 residential units, bringing the total number of units to 83.

“The first phase of Presbyterian Oaks was built in 1989, then the second phase was built in 2005,” Gano said. “Presbyterian Oaks I has 40 units; Presbyterian Oaks II has 25 units; and Presbyterian Oaks III was finished in 2008, and it has 18 units.”

The different phases offer residents a choice in their liv-ing arrangements.

“The first phase is kind of like cottage apartments,” Gano said. “Presbyterian Oaks II and III are all under one roof, which actually makes it really nice for some of the more elderly residents. They don’t have to leave the building to get their mail, and laundry facilities and all that stuff are under one roof.”

to people 62 years old and up with lower incomes. The two oldest people there are both 96 years old.

Gano said even the people who are used to living by themselves in a more isolated setting out in the country quickly warm up to their new environment when they move to Presbyterian Oaks.

“Once they get here and they get into the routine, they love it. We have activities every month, and we have outings they enjoy,” Gano said.

Touart said, “They have games at night that they orga-nize, like dominoes and card games. Once a month they have a potluck supper at night.”

Representatives from hospice care come monthly to put on wellness educational programs and do health checks on the residents.

The community garden is one of the newer activities for residents. It was started a couple of years ago for residents to spend time outside and grow their own fruits and vegetables. A few mini-gardens were also added in close proximity to the homes so residents with mobility issues could also participate in raising garden plants.

“I’m also working with RSVP to try to find volunteer places for some of our residents who want to be useful to the community and not just sit around all day,” Touart said.

One resident currently is a driver for Red Door Kitchen to deliver meals to shut-ins. Another soon will start working for Red Door Kitchen, and a third plans to volunteer for the Head Start program.

“We also have a full-time grounds person who does all our grounds and one service technician, David Smith, who

handles all of our calls,” Gano said. “That’s another nice thing for the residents, down to they don’t change light bulbs. David does all that and makes repairs.”

The apartments are well cared for with new interior paint and with carpet either cleaned or replaced every time there is a change of residents. “We just had a big (Real Estate Assessment Center) inspection by (the Department of Housing and Urban Development) that we got a supe-rior rating on,” Gano said.

The residences stay in high demand, even with the two large recent additions at the property. In early July, Presbyterian Oaks had only about five vacancies, and a couple of those were expected to be filled over the next few weeks.

Gano said she enjoys seeing residents adapt to living at Presbyterian Oaks and the camaraderie that they build with one another.

“It’s really interesting to see how they grow. Living here gives them opportunities that they don’t have if they live on their own. It’s a very different social setting. They are far more independent here, and everybody watches out for each other,” Gano said.
