The changing face of state politics in our area

What will the political landscape look like in our region after the state election on March 28 next year?

The fallout from the ongoing revelations at the ICAC inquiry give Labor candidates Jodie Harrison (Charlestown) and Tim Crakanthorp (Newcastle) the inside running to reclaim both seats from the Liberals.

It will take one hell of a campaign for the Liber-als to regain the public’s confidence.

Both electorates had been long-term Labor strongholds before changing hands at the 2011 election as part of a huge swing statewide.

Andrew Cornwell made the right choice in the end to not stand at the next election.

He had vowed to continue serving the people of Charlestown, but it was never going to be a realistic option.

The ICAC inquiry certainly makes for fascinat-ing viewing and reading from a journalistic point of view.

Unfortunately it puts our city under the spot-light for all the wrong reasons when there are so many positive things going on outside of these incidents.

How about those Knights?Their form is up and down like a yo-yo but

recent victories over the Roosters and the Storm shows there is plenty of hope for the future.

Kurt Gidley said the best part of the last-minute victory against Melbourne was the team embrac-ing each other as the sideline conversion sailed through the posts.

Even non-Knights fans must have been happy to see the sheer joy and excitement on the play-ers’ faces after an unbelievably difficult season.

Young stars like the Mata’utia brothers and Jake Mamo are starting to filter through to the NRL and certainly haven’t been overawed.

It really does make you wonder what might have been this season if even just one of the many dramas and distractions had not occurred this year. The NYC team is four points clear at the top of the ladder. Traditionally the Knights haven’t been all that strong in the under 20s competition but this year’s crop of players have been standouts all year.

History shows that not all of them will make the jump to the NRL but if three or four of the best can progress next year, a return to the finals is on the cards. The departure of several players, including Darius Boyd, frees up room to add depth to an already solid roster.

The appointment of Rick Stone as coach for at least the next two years is a great move.

Full credit to him for staying on at the Knights after being replaced in the head coaching role after the arrival of Wayne Bennett and being such a positive influence around the club.

It will take one hell of a campaign from the Liberals

P olice are seeking information from the public after a brazen daylight armed robbery at Stockland Green Hills last week.

At around 2pm on Tuesday, August 5, a cash-in-transit officer was making a cash delivery to the Commonwealth Bank at the East Maitland shopping centre when the robbery occurred.

“Whilst he was parking the vehicle in the carpark he was approached by a male person,” Central Hunter police duty officer Chief Inspector Greg Lindsell told media last week. “That male person produced what has been described as a pistol and forced entry into the vehicle. He then asked the driver to take him to a location nearby.”

The vehicle was stopped at the other end of the carpark where the robber stole a strongbox containing an undisclosed amount of cash and placed it in a trolley before making his escape.

He was last seen on Stronach Avenue. Police established a search radius and brought in a dog but were unable to locate the man. Police have also reviewed CCTV footage from the centre. No shots were fired and the cash-in-transit officer was unharmed.

Newcastle MP, Tim Owen fronts the media in May and claims to know nothing of funding irregularities in his 2011 election campaign

In May, an emotional Mr Owen announced that he would not re-contest his seat at next year’s state election as allegations of prohibited donations first came to light.

“I want to say this clearly to the people of Newcastle; I had no knowledge what-soever of any funding irregularities in my campaign,” he said at the time.

Mr Owen told the ICAC he had trusted then Shadow Police Minister, Mike Gallacher and Mr Thomson to ensure that donations were made legally after they told him, “we will handle the money,” but admitted to being a “naïve” candidate.

Mr Gallacher resigned as Police Minister in May after the ICAC linked him to the alleged Central Coast Liberal Party slush fund Eightbyfive.

The damning admission from Mr Owen follows a week of explosive revelations at the ICAC, which ended last Friday with the announcement that Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell would not re-contest his seat at next year’s state election, after admitting to accepting a prohibited dona-tion from Mr McCloy.

The ICAC heard that Mr McCloy gave Dr Cornwell $10,000 cash in a brown paper bag during a clandestine exchange in Mr McCloy’s Bentley outside Dr Cornwell’s Cardiff veterinary practice.

The Commission also heard evidence from Mr Owen’s campaign media advisor and former 2HD radio personality, Luke Grant that Mr McCloy and Mr Grugeon had paid his wage with donations made

via sham invoices for marketing consultancy services.

Mr Grant said he was asked by his boss, Mr Thomson, to make up draft invoices, each totalling around $10,000, for the compa-nies, charging them for services that were never performed.

Dr Cornwell and Mr Owen both stood aside from the parliamen-tary Liberal Party last Wednesday and will serve out the rest of their term as cross benchers.

Neither will re-contest their

seat at the next state election in March and the Liberal Party is yet to announce its candidates for the seats.

The ICAC’s inquiry into prohib-ited donations continues this week with Hunter developer Hilton Grugeon scheduled to front the inquiry today (Wednesday).

Mr McCloy is due to appear on Thursday before prominent Newcastle architect, Keith Stronach, Saddingtons Building Supplies, managing director, Bill

Saddington, Daracon founder, David Mingay and ex Newcastle Knights chairman, Michael Tyler give evidence.

Friday will feature Maitland MP, Robyn Parker, hotelier, Rolly de With, Churchills Carpet Court owner, Paul Murphy, solicitor and Newcastle Knights Members Club chairman, Nick Dan and Eclipse Media and Events managing direc-tor, Tracy McKelligott.

The ICAC has not uncovered any wrongdoing by Ms Parker.

Calls for McCloy for step down

Six Newcastle councillors are calling for Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy to stand aside while the Independent Commission Against Corrup-tion (ICAC) investigates allega-tions that he illegally gave donations to the Liberal Party in the lead up to the 2011 state election.

Greens councillors Michael Osborne and Therese Doyle and Labor councillors Tim Crakanthorp, Stephanie Posniak, Jason Dunn and Nuatali Nelmes have all called for the Lord Mayor to step down from the leadership role for the good of the city and Council. “Cr McCloy stood down the art gallery director amid various allegations saying that Council had a responsibility to ‘act ethically and properly’ in respect of the allegations,” Cr Posniak said.

“He should do the same.”Cr Osborne has launched a

campaign on his Facebook

page, which is followed by more than 7,000 users, calling for Cr McCloy to stand aside.

The series of social media posts have been shared more than 130 times.

The Labor councillors have also called on the Electoral Funding Commission to investigate electoral donations by Cr McCloy during the 2012 local government campaign.

It is alleged that donations from Cr McCloy’s business, McCloy Administration helped pay the wage of Newcastle MP, Tim Owen’s media advisor, Luke Grant, during the 2011 state election campaign.

The Commission also heard evidence from Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell last week that Cr McCloy had given him a $10,000 cash dona-tion towards his campaign, adding that he should have been giving the money to the Salvation Army. Mr Owen and Dr Cornwell have since stood aside from the parliamentary Liberal Party and neither will re-contest their seat at next year’s state election.

S hortland Esplanade will become a one-way street as part of planned upgrades to the coastline between Nobbys and Newcastle Beach.

The popular tourist drive will soon be closed to northbound traffic to make way for construction of the next section of the Bathers Way shared pathway.

Work on the latest phase of the project began last week and will ultimately see viewing platforms, picnic areas and a cycleway introduced along the roadway.

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy said the upgrades would create greater oppor-tunities for tourists and locals to enjoy the city’s coastline, while improving safety and accessibility.

“This project will activate new spaces in the area that will increase tourism and bring more people to Newcastle and the CBD for recreation, eating and shopping,” he said.

“The works that have just been completed at Merewether Beach are a shining example of what coastal revi-talisation and investment can do for our community.”

A transformation is taking place on the corner of Darby and Bull Streets in Cooks Hill.

Work has begun to convert a vacant block of land into an urban oasis, a community garden where local residents and visitors to Darby Street can enjoy a spot in the sun, read a book or sip a coffee.

The garden will also act as a natural kitchen where the community can learn about sustainable food practices and permaculture.

Kevin Coffey, a representative of the Darby Street Traders Group, which is developing the site in collaboration with Newcastle Now, said the garden came

about as a way of injecting a bit of commu-nity spirit into the neighbourhood.

“After we did the upgrade of the laneway that runs along Goldbergs [Coffee House], we were surprised with the reaction we got from the community,” he said.

“We were like, wow, is this all it takes?“I don’t like to use the word placemak-

ing but it’s really about giving something to the community that they can own.”

Mr Coffey said around 70 traders and residents had already got behind the project and he encouraged others to keep a close eye on the site as the project progresses. “We’re going to build this thing but it can’t survive without the community,” he said.

The project is expected to be complete by early October.

T elstra will hold a public forum on Thursday, August 21 to inform residents and local businesses about a proposed 35-metre

mobile tower planned for 5 Scenic Drive, Caves Beach.

A Telstra spokesperson said it was company policy to consult the community prior to lodging a development application for mobile towers.

A Caves Beach resident, who did not wish to be identified, told the Post there was concern in the community over the site chosen for the tower. “People understand the need for good mobile phone reception

and fast internet, but the site is only 200 metres from a pre-school and nursing home, and 300 metres from the primary school and high school,” the resident said.

A letter to residents from Telstra said a development application would be lodged before the end of the year with the forum to contain a panel of experts from Telstra as well as external consultants who would answer questions on topics including elec-tromagnetic emissions.

The correspondence said the proposed facility was designed to improve mobile coverage and capacity, especially indoor coverage to Caves Beach and the immedi-ate surrounding area. The public forum will be held at Caves Beachside Hotel, 7 Mawson Close from 7pm-9pm.

Merewether Beach just keeps looking better and better. The newest addition to its beautiful landscape is the “Merewether Aquarium”, a vibrant and engaging new public art mural just completed in the Merewether Beach Pedestrian Tunnel, which connects Ridge Street to Hender-son Parade.

The lively scene, imagined and painted by Newcastle artist Trevor Dickinson, depicts a whimsical underwater landscape complete with people, animals, buildings, historic references and iconic Merewether landmarks.

As you walk through the tunnel and view the mural, you can spot everything from the Merewether baths starting blocks to a submerged train engine to all manner of sea life, real and imagined. With its bright colours and fanciful char-acters, the mural offers something to be enjoyed by people of all ages. Bring the family out and see how many different items you can find in the seascape.

While the mural is fun and showcases the talents of one of Newcastle’s wonderful artists, it was commissioned by Council with a serious purpose. Council is going out to tender with these public art projects, offering opportunities for both established and new artists to develop creative ideas for improving public spaces.

Coordinated by Council’s anti-graffiti team, murals are being painted across the City in tunnels, in parks and on the side of city buildings as a way to discourage graffiti, provide a showcase for public art and make public infrastructure more visually interesting.

As Trevor has completed the details of each mural section, Council staff have come in and painted over it with a clear anti-graffiti coating to help preserve the mural and discour-age graffiti. This step will help ensure that this fantastic example of public art can be enjoyed by Newcastle locals and visitors for decades to come.

Illegal dumping is a problem that Council has been work-ing hard to rid our City of for many years so I am pleased that we are now a part of a new 10-council squad dedicated to stamping out illegal dumping in the Hunter and Central Coast.

Lake Macquarie (as the host Council), Wyong, Cessnock, Upper Hunter, Maitland, Dungog, Newcastle, Muswellbrook and Singleton Councils have joined forces with the Environ-ment Protection Authority to create the Hunter - Central Coast Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Squad. Gosford City Council have also been invited to join.

The RID Squad, thanks to $1.6 million funding from the Environment Protection Authority and over $400,000 from participating councils, will enhance compliance, education and enforcement around illegal dumping activity through-out the Hunter and Central Coast.

We all have a role to play in keeping our City tidy and this pooling of resources and local expertise is a great example of how we can work together to stamp out an illegal activ-ity that creates negative impacts for the environment and human health, and is also costly for councils.

The RID Squad will investigate incidents of illegal dump-ing and attempt to identify those responsible.

The Squad will also run important information campaigns to help make sure everyone understands that there is no excuse for inappropriate rubbish disposal.

We can all play a role in helping the RID Squad to hold illegal dumpers accountable for their actions.

If you witness illegal dumping activity, take note of the vehicle registration number and contact Council on 4921 0333 or the Environment Protection Authority’s Environ-ment Line on 131 555.

Ice cream truck stole Police have charged a man after an ice cream truck was allegedly stolen and pur-sued on the Central Coast on Monday morn-ing. About 8.50am, an ice-cream truck was parked on Hunter Street, Newcastle, when it was allegedly stolen. Police were alerted and about 9.20am, the same day, the truck was found driving south on Pacific Highway in Belmont South, and a pursuit was initiated.

Road spikes were deployed on the road at Pacific Highway in Catherine Hill Bay and again at Doyalson, shredding the front tyres of the truck. The truck allegedly continued until it finally stopped on Lenola Crescent, Blue Haven, and the driver ran from the truck. The man, aged 45, was arrested a short distance away on Newton Place and taken to Wyong Police Station. He was charged with unlicensed for class, destroy damage property, police pursuit (Skye’s law), take and drive conveyance without consent of owner. He appeared at Wyong Local Court on Monday and was again refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court on Monday 8 September 2014.

Trail bikes riders compliantAn operation targeting off-road motor-

cycles within the Lake Macquarie area has shown most riders are obeying the law, senior police said. Lake Macquarie Local Area Commander, Superintendent Brett Greentree said it was a good result that only one infringement was issued during the weekend’s operation.

On Sunday 10 August, four police officers targeted the illegal use of unregistered trail bikes. Between 8am and 4pm, the officers

who were riding NSW Police motorcycles patrolled in various areas around Morisset.

In all, 10 motorcycle riders were stopped with nine of those spoken to, and the tenth issued an infringement for owner permit illegal use of motor cycle. “Officers also conducted an enforcement operation last week which I believe assisted in this pleasing result,” Superintendent Greentree said. “The officers were able to access several new trails in the area and believe that there are only a relatively small number of riders acting illegally.

“Police liaised with several members of the public and were able to gain information about other anti-social activities in the area.

“These operations will continue and I urge anyone with information about unregistered motorcycle riders to come forward and contact us,” Superintendent Greentree said.

Maitland firearm chargePolice have charged a man with possess-

ing a firearm that was allegedly located in a car in Maitland on Sunday night. About 7.45pm, officers were conducting random breath testing on the New England Highway.

A Daihatsu Charade was stopped and the 42-year-old driver from Tenambit was spoken to. A male passenger ran from the car, police chased the man on foot with the assistance of a police dog but he could not be located.

Officers searched the car and allegedly found a pistol and black clothing. The man was arrested and charged with possess unregistered firearm and learner not accompanied. He was refused bail and appeared in court on Monday.

F itness and physical activity are on the up in primary schools across Newcastle thanks to a

new program being rolled out by a team of researchers from the University of Newcastle.

The Supporting Children’s Outcomes using Rewards, Exercise and Skills (SCORES) program equips teachers, chil-dren and parents with the skills they need to get active more often, via education and encouragement.

The intervention-style program was introduced in public schools at Mayfield East, Stockton, Tighes Hill and Toronto and over a 12-month period, saw students from Years 3 and 4 increase their moder-ate-to-vigorous physical activity by an average of 12 minutes a day - a combined total of an hour each school week.

With the help of the program, students also improved movement skills like running, catching, kicking and throwing by 10 per cent and boosted their overall fitness level by the equivalent of five extra laps on the beep test.

Lead researcher, Associate Professor David Lubens said it was exceptionally rare for a program to achieve such posi-tive results across three key areas.

“Some of these behaviours and outcomes are very difficult to improve

and it’s also difficult to detect those improvements,” he said.

“Certainly from what we’ve seen, some of these results are as good as any, if not one of the best school-based interven-tions of this kind.”

Associate Professor Lubens said the findings of the study also suggested that increasing physical activity at school had a flow-on effect after school and on weekends.

The research team has partnered with Hunter New England Health to rollout the program in schools throughout the region.

SENIORLIVING

With all of the recent talk and media coverage on retirement, have you been questioning how you’re going to receive and secure your income during your glory years?

A simple solution could be to use an ‘annuity’. An annuity is an investment that pays you a series of regular guaranteed income payments, either for a fixed period of time or for a life-time. You can purchase an annuity with your superannuation funds or with non-superannuation monies.

Key features of annuities include:• You can nominate the term/life of the investment and the

payment frequency.• You have certainty that your income will not run out during

the term/life of the annuity.• The flexibility to choose whether your income payments

will remain level or be indexed each year to keep pace with inflation.

• With the fixed term, you can choose whether you would like to have a proportion of your capital returned to you as a lump sum at the end of the term (and the amount of this lump sum).

• As it is not market-linked, you are protected from adverse movements in the investment markets. Instead, you lock in the interest rate at the time of the investment is made.

Be aware:• A lifetime annuity has nil residual capital value, meaning

nothing is paid to your dependants or estate upon your death.• It is not investment-linked so your capital will not grow and

you cannot take advantage of favourable market movements.• You are locked in to a specific rate of return for the rest of

the term (or life). If interest rates rise, you are not able to take advantage of the higher potential return.

• Please speak to your adviser about how these investments are assessed for Centrelink purposes.

Annuities are an alternative income stream and are not for everyone. To learn more and find out if an annuity is right for you we recommend you speak with your financial adviser.

Everything old is new again

N ewcastle Mattress Recyclers are dedicated to reducing waste by keeping mattresses and bases out of landfill sites, which are filling up fast.

In keeping with current legislation, Newcastle Mattress Recyclers deals with old mattresses by cleaning and donating those in the best condition to people in need.

The remainder of mattresses are dismantled with over 97% of the materials recycled. Councils charge $25 or more per mattress or base disposed off at their waste disposal depots and as a result a large number of mattresses are being dumped illegally. Newcastle Mattress Recyclers understands the frustrations of the high charge to dispose of old mattresses which is likely to result in mattresses being disposed of illegally on a continuous basis, that is why Newcastle Mattress Recyclers commenced its service.

They aim to give a much cheaper alternative to disposing of mattresses whilst doing their part to help the environment. Charges are not based on mattress or base size. Instead, the cost is per mattress and base, currently $20 (each) for busi-ness customers and $25 (each) for residential customers

Newcastle Mattress Recyclers has a variety of ex-shop (floor stock), second hand and refurbished bed mattresses and bases for sale starting from as low as $20. Sizes include: single, king single, double, queen and king. Newcastle Mattress Recyclers also recycle lounges. The components of lounges are distributed in the same way as those of mattresses and bases. The metal goes to scrap yards, foam and plastics are dropped off at local recycling centres and the timber is mulched.

To arrange a collection, call (02) 4017 0446. sponsored content

This week you will hopefully notice a lot of people walking round wearing very distinctive bright blue beanies. That’s because they have decided to ‘Bang on a Beanie’ to raise awareness for acquired brain injury (ABI) as part of Brain Awareness Week which runs from 11-17 August.

The objective is to increase community understand-ing of ABI, raise funds, and develop sustainable and mutually beneficial partnerships with organisations across the country. ABI refers to any damage to the brain that occurs after birth (with the exception of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder - FASD). That damage can be caused by an accident or trauma, by a stroke, a brain infection, by alcohol or other drugs or by diseases of the brain like Parkinson’s disease.

Brain injury is common. More than 600,000 Austral-ians have an acquired brain injury, with three out every four of them being under 65 years of age. As many as two out of every three of these people acquired their brain injury before they turned 25, and three out of every four people with acquired brain injury are men.

Clearly a major cause of brain injury is falls and preventing falls is an important consideration which your pharmacist can provide information and coun-selling about. You can get detailed information from pharmacies providing Self Care health information via the Preventing Falls fact card. Ring 1300 369 772 or log onto the Pharmaceutical Society website www.psa.org.au and click on Self Care then ‘Use the Self Care Pharmacy Finder’ for the nearest location.

The actions of Hunter MPs has again dominated ICAC inquiries this week and has brought national focus to our region for all the wrong reasons. There is now a trail of alleged corruption that travels from Newcastle through the Central Coast all the way to Macquarie Street.

We should all abhor corruption, because corruption hurts us all. These donations, gifts and outright bribes were all given with an expectation of a favour done in return. Whether or not those favours have yet been given is irrelevant. The act of accepting tainted money taints the receiver, whether they act on it or not.

Political leaders, at the local, state and national level, are having difficulty regaining the trust of the community. Every scandal, every broken promise, every backflip erodes what little trust the community still has in our political leaders.

After the embarrassment caused by the actions of Eddie Obeid, senior figures in the NSW Labor Party are calling for the establishment of a federal equivalent of ICAC to ensure the scandals we have seen in State Parlia-ment can’t be repeated in Canberra. I hope all sides of politics agree to this vital reform, but other changes will be needed as well.

Tougher caps on donations are needed and the prohib-ited donor list needs to be strictly enforced. We must work towards a system where MPs spend less time rais-ing money for elections and more time working for the community after the election.

Full public funding of election campaigns is an idea worthy of further discussion.

Reform vital on donations

The secret to a successful business sale is all in the planning and timing. It can take a year or two to prepare a business for sale, even a small one that doesn’t have millions in turnover. The timing of the sale of your busi-ness will also help to maximise the sale price.

One of the most important parts of preparing your business for sale is getting your financials in order. The first thing a prospective buyer may ask for is a copy of your financials. You need to have at least three years of audited statements prepared along with your current year financials. They need to be comprehensive and up to date and be appealing to buyers. Your financials will be structured for tax purposes so it’s important to remember they show the financial strength of your business. You will need to take into account:

• Business owner income• Business owner benefits• Expenses not directly related to running the business• Non-recurring business owner revenue. This will give a better indication of the true profitabil-

ity of your business to a prospective buyer.A business buyer is also interested in• The future earning capacity of the business • Whether the business has a strong brand or is heavily

dependent on the business owner• Whether there are growth plans in place to increase

revenue.Once a decision is made to sell, you must work hard

to further the brand and not yourself and work on substantiating and predicting future revenue streams.

A person with diabetes should aim to get their blood sugar level (BSL) as close to ‘normal’ as possible. The ‘normal’ BSL range is between 4-8 mmol/L. It is basically impossible to do that without knowing which things increase your BSL, and which things decrease your BSL.

Things that increase your BSL include:• Certain foods (carbohydrates)• Stress (physical and emotional). Physical stress is an injury

(e.g. a broken bone) or illness (e.g. the flu or an infection).Things that decrease your BSL include:• Insulin (the insulin that your body produces*)• Exercise• Diabetes Medications (diabetes tablets and insulin injec-

tions)*If you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas is no longer

producing insulin. If you have type 2 diabetes, usually your pancreas is still producing insulin but either not enough, or it is not working effectively.

By knowing which things increase or decrease your BSL, you can identify why your BSL may be high or low, and then use the same information to get it back into the normal range.

For example, if your BSL is ‘high’ - it is either because you have had too much carbohydrate and/or stress in proportion to the amount of insulin your body is producing (or how well it is working) and/or how much exercise you have done, and/or how much diabetes medication you have taken.

To bring your BSL down, you can either:1. Increase your exercise, or 2. Increase your diabetes medication (under your doctor’s

supervision), or 3. Reduce your carbohydrate intake, or 4. Try to reduce your stress levels, or5. A combination of one or more of the above strategies. For help and support in achieving better BSLs, come and see

one of our friendly Dietitians at Feast for Health. We would love to help you!

Last week was Healthy Bones Action Week, an initiative to raise awareness of the issues of bone health and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone diseases affect-ing Australians. In fact, it is estimated that about 1.2 million Australians (men and women) suffer from osteoporosis.

The condition occurs when bones begin to lose minerals, such as calcium, resulting in a loss of bone density and making those bones more fragile and prone to fracture from even minor bumps or falls. The bones most often affected are the spine, wrist and hip. Osteoporosis affects both men and women, although the condition is more often seen in women because the hormonal changes associated with menopause tends to trigger a more rapid loss of bone density.

Those who are very thin or very obese and those who do not exercise much are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis.

Certain medical conditions such as Coeliac Disease and Thyroid Disease and medications like prednisone and treatments for breast and prostate cancer also carry a greater risk of developing the condition. And of course calcium is needed for bone health - any diet low in calcium contributes to osteoporosis risk. So, how can osteoporosis be prevented? Regular exercise can help, but it has to be the right type of exercise. Any activity that puts a little bit of strain on your bones is good - walking, dancing and tennis are some examples.

A diet with adequate amounts of calcium is very important and Vitamin D is needed to help absorb that calcium.

We get Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, but the amount varies depending on where you live, patterns of sunlight expo-sure and your skin type.

Your doctor can arrange a simple blood test to check your levels of Vitamin D. A bone density scan is all that is required to diag-nose osteoporosis.

Once a diagnosis is made there are some very effective treat-ments available to help limit further bone loss.

Your GP will be able to assess your risk factors for osteoporosis and help you decide if you need referring for a bone density scan.

THE RAYMOND TERRACE JETS have narrowly failed to win the blue ribbon No.1 Grade State Pennant Title. Raymond Terrace convincingly won their three Sectional matches defeating Dubbo Railway 60/44 in Round 1, Nowra 78/46 in Round 2 and Park Beach 59/36 in Round 3. This resulted in a semi-final show down with No.1 Grade favourites Taren Point.

Taren Point displayed their class defeating Raymond Terrace by 15 shots, 56/41, winning on all three rinks. The quartet of Steve Garry, Mike Nagy, Cy Threfall and David Axon recorded the biggest win 18/9 over Haydn Bojkowski, Tim Twining, Ian Lean and Jason Stokes. The other two rinks were close, hard fought affairs with Joel Mitchell, Craig Donaldson, John Green and Australian representative, Wayne Turley edging out Shaun Richards, Jamie Minter, Shane Evans and Lennon Scott 19/18. While Reg McCulla, Simon Lyttle, Chris Green and New Zealand international, Ali Forsyth downed Jim Towers, Tony Ellercamp, Michael Abel and Matthew

Baus 19/14. Belrose proved too strong for Cabramatta in the second semi-final winning 66/38.

The 12 day 54th Annual Mattara Carni-val with 1091 entries commences next Monday with the playing of Sectional matches in the Les Parrott Memorial Open Singles and Restricted Singles.

Defending Open Singles champion Chris Ramage (Soldiers Point) has drawn Section 16 to be played at Toronto Workers with his Sectional opponents being Brett Findlay (Teralba), Scott Thoroughgood (Lambton) and Paul Adams (Mayfield West). The semi-finals and finals of both events will be played at Wallsend next Wednesday.

R ecruitment and planning for 2015 will begin in earnest for the Knights after the appointment of Rick Stone as head coach of the Knights for the

next two years.Stone returns to the role after taking over the

Knights’ NRL team towards the end of 2009 after the departure of Brian Smith and continu-ing on through 2010 and 2011 before the arrival of Wayne Bennett.

“Rick has a thorough knowledge of our club and the community, which are qualities we felt important in the head coach position,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“We look forward to Rick continuing to focus his energies on our current NRL team, and also our NSW Cup team as they move towards the finals later in the year.”

Stone said he had learnt a great deal over the past three years and felt he would be in a good position to take the Knights forward.

“It’s great to get another chance to coach the Knights because it’s not often you get a second opportunity to coach at the same Club,” Stone said.

Knights coaching set in Stone

Current NSW Cup coach, Rick Stone will take the reins of the NRL side next season

Patience and commitment to club rewarded with another chance at the top job

“We have some exciting times ahead with some great young juniors coming through this year and some more talent not too far away from playing NRL.”

Meanwhile, Knights captain Kurt Gidley praised his teammates for refusing to concede

defeat in the latter stages of Saturday’s match against Melbourne.

Down 30-20 with three minutes to go, very few Knights fans would have expected to be jumping out of their seats shortly after.

But as captain Kurt Gidley said after the last-

PAUL MONFORTEgasp 32-30 win “if you don’t believe, you have no chance”.

Gidley was swamped by teammates after kicking a conversion after the siren and thanked the fans for sticking with the team throughout a difficult season.

“They’ve been through the highs and lows with us, so I think everyone walks away pretty happy and proud of their team,” Gidley said.

Coach Wayne Bennett said he wasn’t sure where the match was going to end up after the Knights were down 12-0 after only 10 minutes.

“But they sorted things out on the field amongst themselves and got themselves back in the contest,” Bennett said.

The Knights’ lower grade sides set the scene for the NRL heroics with convincing victories earlier in the afternoon.

The NYC team shut out the Storm 38-0 and are now four points clear at the top of the ladder.

Newcastle’s NSW Cup team dominated Cronulla with a 56-12 thrashing.

The Knights are at home again this weekend when they take on the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday at 2pm at Hunter Stadium.

The NYC match will get underway at 11.45am.The NSW Cup side will play the Warriors at St

John Oval at 2pm on Saturday.
