Some development on rail land may not be such a bad thing Last week's kerfuftle over Planning Minister Pru Goward's admission that there would be some development on space freed up by the truncation of the heavy rallline at Wickham is a bit over the top.

It's true that the state government had previously indicated the land would be for public use, but I think a combination of development and green space is a good compromise.

We already have a lot of beautiful parkland in the general vicinity of the rail corridor and while visually it would be nice to have trees and gardens etc stretching from Wickham to Newcastle station, I think we should use the land to add more value to the city. As long as the development fits in with the neighbouring Honeysuckle and Foreshore areas. These are amongst the most picturesque and stylish areas in Newcastle and don't need too many more multi-level apartment or office blocks in close proximity.

I'm thinking along the lines of cafes and restaurants. Maybe some single-level retail outlets.

The Save Our Rail action group say the intention all along from the government was to sell some of the land for development once the line was gone.

Perhaps they are right. I have to pay credit to the Save Our Rail group - they have certainly stuck to their guns on this issue against what some would consider to be insurmountable odds. Barring a major backflip from the government, it's almost

certain that the rail line is going to be truncated at Wickham, but Save Our Rail are still in there chipping away where they can.

f) Clive Palmer certainly knows how to put the media spotlight onto himself.

His comments that the federal government formulated their paid parental scheme leave policy "just so that the Prime Minister's chief-ofstaff (Peta Credlin) can receive a massive benefit when she gets pregnant" was ridiculous and obviously designed to get the reaction it did from the Coalition. As has been pointed out, it was in especially poor taste considering that Ms Credlin has been trying to have a baby via IVF treatment.

Mr Palmer then said on Twitter: "I've not intended to personally attack Peta Credlin in my PPL criticisms. However, no key position in government should escape scrutiny."

I think he was trying to target the government in general rather than just Ms Credlin, but surely he realised that she would be personally offended by the comments.

I still can't figure Mr Palmer out. Sometimes he comes up with ideas that offer a refreshing change to the often stale policies offered by the major parties. But there always seems to be a controversy just waiting to happen when he makes a comment. Maybe it's all part of a plan to keep the Palmer United Party in the news.

Crime down across the city Newcastle Local Area commader welcomes positive result

• AMELIA PARROTT W @amelia_parroU

Crime is down across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

The latest results from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics

and Research (BOCSAR) show significant decreases in assaults and robberies, with household break and enters down 23 percent.

The quarterly report also recorded a significant drop in instances of robbery without a weapon, down 33.1 per cent locally.

Newcastle Local Area commander Superintendent John Gralton said the positive result was down to proactive policing, including bail compliance checks and targeting known offenders.

The downward trend was reflected statewide, with 14 of the 17 major offence categories either decreasing or remaining stable in the two years to March 2014.

Newcastle Local Area commander Superintendent John Gralton has welcomed the latest crime statistics that show a drop in crime across the city

The three exceptions were domestic violence related assault (up 2.5 per cent), indecent assault, acts of indecency and other sexual offences (up 12.1 per cent) and fraud (up 8.6 per cent).

NSW Police Minister, Stuart Ayres said the rise in fraud was mostly related to the unauthorised use or loss of credit cards.

"This is a good reminder to remain vigilant with your credit and bank card information," he said.

"Regularly monitor your statements to ensure there are no unauthorised charges or fraudulent activity.

"This is particularly important if you use your card for online transactions, or

have a 'pay-pass' (or tap-and-go) feature on your cards.

"You are your best protection when it comes to identifying this type of fraud."

BOSCAR attribute the increase in domestic violence related assaults and sexual offences to greater reporting from victims.

G Graduation grants Social housing tenants looking to pursue tertiary education can now receive a financial leg-up through a new grants program.

The NSW Government is offering 50 grants of up to $5,000 through its new Grants for Graduation program, with the aim of giving disadvantaged students a financial boost into tertiary study at TAFE or university.

Students who are interested in applying for the Grants for Graduation program or would like more information about the scheme should contact 6766 4990 or email [email protected].

Cash boost for cancer research Hunter Cancer Research Alliance to benefit from $6.5 million in extra funding

• AMELIA PARROTT W @amelia_parrott

The Hunter has been identified as a regional hub for cancer research, with the State Government, through the Cancer Institute

NSW, contributing $6.5 million towards the establishment of a new cancer research centre in the area.

The Hunter Cancer Research Alliance (HCRA) will have its status upgraded from a cancer research unit to a centre as part of a five-year funding initiative that will put it on par with the metropolitan-based centres.

"This essentially means we are recognised by the Cancer Institute NSW as being a highly-credible partnership with significant capacity to develop new strategies in cancer research," HCRA director, Professor Stephen Ackland said.

"Our region has relatively high mortality rates for various cancers and a strong demand for clinical services, so this funding will allow clinicians, scientists, general practitioners and patients to work together more efficiently ensuring the right patient gets the right treatment at the right time.

"We will be reviewing our priorities with

targeted treatments and better ways of preventing and managing cancer in those who are susceptible."

Greg Flint, CEO of one of the Hunter's major cancer hospitals, Calvary Mater Newcastle, also welcomed the funding announcement.

HCRA integrates the Hunter Medical Research Centre's Cancer Research Program, the University of Newcastle Priority Research Centre for Cancer and the Clinical Research Network.

The University of Newcastle plans to bolster the new funding announcement with six new PhD scholarships over three years, totalling over $500,000.

NSW Health Minister lillian Skinner said HCRA was one of three new translational cancer research centres to be established across the state.

"It is vital we ensure benchtop research meets the bedside needs of people affected by cancer," she said.

"NSW's translational cancer research program facilitates cutting-edge discoveries that will see the rapid translation of research into real outcomes for people with cancer."

the overarching aim of providing more Hunter Cancer Research Alliance director, Professor Stephen Ackland

The Government will contribute an additional $19.3 million to its translational cancer research program over the next five years.

COMMUNITY

Low-key closure for 5 Walls end justice service • AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parrou

It was the quiet move that will affect many members of the Wallsend community.

Last month, the Justice Access Centre in Nelson Street shut its doors for good.

The centre had had its opening hours slashed since the retirement of Wallsend Court registrar, Keith Hendry in August last year, moving from a five-day-a-week service to trading on just one day each week.

The service had not had any form of street signage since 2007.

Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery accused the State Government of not adequately promoting the service in the community.

"The NSW Government did not promote this centre or support it in a way that encouraged its use," she said.

"In recent times the operating days have changed and phones would just rings out when unattended.

"What Government department does not have a phone message to tell customers what days they are open?"

in 2015, however, the service closed its doors without notice at the end of last month.

Wallsend Town Business Association president, Max McCorkell said the closure was "a kick in the guts" for the otherwise thriving business hub.

"We have all worked hard in Wallsend to improve and strive in the wake of many hardships, like the storms of 2007 that inundated Wallsend," he said.

"When you have a Government removing vital services, it's just like a kick in the guts."

A spokesperson for the Department of Police and Justice told the Post the services had experienced a substantial reduction in public demand for its services, receiving just one face-to-face inquiry a month on average.

"The centre handled six face-to-face inquiries this year and only 43 in 2013."

"The decline in demand may be attributed to the increase in court services available online or over the phone and the ease that offers users of court services.

Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery outside the former Justice Access Centre In Nelson Street, Wallsend

One ofMs Homery's staffers told the Post that initial advice had indicated that the service would continue until work on the new Newcastle Courthouse was complete

The spokesperson denied the centre had been closed without notice, saying the Department had wrote to stakeholders including the Newcastle Law Society, local solicitors, the Department of Human Services and local police before making the decision to cease the service.

MEDIA

The buzz about Newcastle • AMELIA PARROTT }I @amelia_parrott

She may be from Derbyshire, England but Rebecca Males is on the way to earning the title of honourary Novocastrian, after

publishing an article online highlighting 28 reasons to visit Newcastle.

The list, published on the website BuzzFeed, a pop culture hub with a global audience of more than 130 million users, was published a little over a week ago and has already garnered over 15,000 views and been shared on social media by local retailers and organisations like Newcastle Now. It hits on all the best bits of Newcastle,

from the city's wonderful coastline, historic buildings and cafe culture as well as some unexpected gems like, local hipster-haunt the Terrace Bar on Hunter Street, Sweet Traditions lolly shop at the Junction and our numerous independent bookshops, which combined with the great coffee apparently make Newcastle "a bookworm's dream".

Miss Males, who has been blogging since the age of 17, said after 12 months of living and blogging in Newcastle, she got the impression many Novocastrians don't realise just how good they have it.

"People don't realise how unique the culture and atmosphere is in Newcastle," she said.

ARTS

Windows on Watt Street Artists asked to delve into the past or look to the future for City Evolutions

• AMELIA PARROTT W @amelia_parrott

The call is out for local artists to light up the night as part of the next instalment of City Evolutions.

Launched in June last year, City Evolutions brings a riot of colour and light to Watt Street, illuminating the street's many historic facades.

Following the success of the ANZAC portraiture project, which has been showing along the street since April, the University of Newcastle and Newcastle City Council have announced the new theme, Windows -Past and Future.

Council's manager tourism and economic development services, Jan Ross said the windows theme gives artists the opportunity to choose the frame of the past or future.

"It should be a window to significant people, events or places," she said.

"Artists may find inspiration in women or indigenous communities that might not have had a high profile in the written history but who have had a major impact on Newcastle's development.

Top left: Novocastrlans gather to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at City Hall in 1954 Top right: Theatre-goers gather outside the Civic Theatre on Hunter Street Bottom left: The aftermath of the Newcastle earthquake in 1989 Bottom right: The Pasha Bulker ran aground at Nobbys Beach in June, 2007 Photos: Newcastle City Council

"[Artists] might also be inspired by the look and feel of physical developments, like the port, and what they might look like in the future."

All artistic styles are welcome, including video and animation, illustrative, multimedia or still images, performance or film-based concepts.

Works may be in colour or black and white.

They may be existing works or created for City Evolutions.

Entries must be received by Monday, June 23.

For more information on how to submit a piece, visit the Newcastle City Council website.

HEALTH

Help track the Du this season Health officials are encouraging sufferers to share their symptoms online

• AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parroU

W e all know it's impolite to share flu symptoms with family and friends through coughing or sneezing, but

flu sufferers are now being invited to share their symptoms online through a new e-health initiative.

Developed by Hunter New England Health and the University of Newcastle, flutracking.net allows users to share their flu symptoms online each week via a health surveillance system that enables health officials to monitor possible flu outbreaks.

Flutracking.net coordinator, Dr Craig Dalton said more users that ever were sharing their symptoms through the system.

"This year we have experienced a record number of 17,000 respondents per week," he said.

"It is the greatest level of community participation we have experienced since the initiative began eight years ago, which helps improve accuracy." Help health officials track the flu by sharing your symptoms online Photo: Can Stock Photo

Users are asked to share their symptoms via a 10-second survey, which is delivered to their inbox once a week, about flu-like symptoms they may be experiencing.

Once the survey is complete, participants

are directed to the latest flu map and weekly flu report.

Genesis Fitness Club Charlestown's successful run challenge raised a total of $1625 for the national youth mental health foundation, headspace.

A cheque for $1120 was presented to headspace at an open day lunch last Wednesday, with further donations boosting the total later in the week.

Member for Charlestown, Andrew Cornwell, showed his support for the initiative and praised the work of organisations such as headspace.

The challenge was the idea of Genesis Charlestown personal trainer, Brent Taylor, who lost a close friend to suicide.

The challenge involved running or walking 1.2km in the streets surrounding the fitness club.

Although the challenge was far from a race, the quickest time recorded to complete the circuit was 3 minutes 45 seconds.

The open day luch also featured an information session from dietician Sally Macklinshaw.

ConnectAbility clients Maree Hopain and Kel Miller enjoy the newly renovated art room

The lights are on, the ceiling is in and the heat is on, too.

Hamilton-based disability service provider ConnectAbility has had its art room transformed from a drafty garage into a fully functioning artist's studio with the help of a $6,500 grant from the State Government.

Contractors have been busy over the last three weeks, installing a ceiling, new lighting and an air conditioner in the space, which had previously been unusable when the temperature reached extremes.

ConnectAbility CEO, Bryan McLoughlin said the renovations would allow the organisation to expand the popular program.

"It's a big step forward for us," he said. "We're excited because it actually gives

us a bit of a leap frog forward in terms of being able to engage more with the community and hopefully have people come in and use this more as a studio.

"It's definitely got that studio feel about it now."

ENVIRONMENT

Glenrock's green army • AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parrott

Agroup of dedicated volunteers had their conservation efforts recognised on World Environment Day last Thursday, receiv

ing a grant to help with their ongoing work rehabilitating the Glenrock Scout Campsite.

Building on the legacy of Newcastle Apex, whose members took part in the inaugural tree planting at Glenrock Scout Camp in 1976, the Thursday Working Group has been diligently chipping away at the site ever since, clearing weeds, reestablishing native plants, controlling erosion and establishing solar systems, water tanks and a worm farm to service the camp, transforming the once damaged landscape into an urban hideaway.

Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell said the group had put in a "herculean effort" to restore the site to its former glory over nearly 40 years.

"These valleys and hillsides were once degraded by mining and the area around the Glenrock Lagoon was a wasteland," he said. "The beautiful environment we see today has been created by the Thursday Working Group volunteers [and] it is a gift to future generations."

While some signs of Glenrock's mining past are still evident around the site, foun-

Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell and Thursday Working Group member, John Le Messurler plant a tree at the Glenrock Scout Camp site

dation member of the Thursday Working Group, John Le Messurier said it had come a long way since 1976.

"When we planted those first trees and shurbs, Glenrock Scout Camp was a barren former coal mining site that had almost no top soil and upper woodland that was baldy damaged by early mining," he said.

"There is now a fantastic variety of birds and other wildlife frequenting the camp's green corridors, which extend from the rehabilitated bushland higher up, all the way down to the lagoon."

Mr Le Messurier said the group would use the grant money to buy a chipper to create bulk much to enrich its plantings.

Daniel's hairy challenge • MELISSAH COMBER

SPorting a beard for charity wasn't always on the cards for Daniel Kelly, but the idea grew on him.

The Bolwarra Heights man has set himself the challenge of raising $7500 for beyondblue, a non-profit organisation that reduces the impacts of depression and anxiety. He started in March, and will have the beard for six months.

Mr Kelly said it's his way of supporting family and friends he has seen suffer from depression, while raising awareness.

"It's definitely a cause close to my heart," he said. "Although it's a lot more known these days, it's still not out there enough.

"This is more about spreading the word."

Mr Kelly said there was no special reason for opting for the beard. "I wanted to do something a bit different," he said. "Last winter I had a beard for about eight weeks and I didn't realise how warm it kept me until I shaved it off." Having raised $6500 so far, Mr Kelly has received a lot of support, but not everyone likes his fuzz. "My Mrs isn't really a fan. I'm

Positive mind play

Hunter School of Performing Arts students rehearse ahead of next week's MindPlay grand final

• AMELIA PARROTT }# @amelia_parrott

Year 11 drama students from across the Hunter will get together next week to play out a positive message about

mental health. Students from Hunter Valley Grammar and Lambton, Toronto, Warners Bay and Whitebridge high schools will compete in the grand final of MindPlay, the Hunter Institute of Mental Health's (HIMH) annual school drama competition.

As part of the competition, students write and perform a IS-minute piece centred on a particular mental health theme.

This year the theme is wellbeing.

"The term 'mental health' can sometimes be mistaken as meaning mental illness," HIMH director Jaelea Skehan said.

"By emphasizing wellbeing as a state of feeling good about ourselves and the way we live our lives, MindPlay 2014 puts the focus on recognising and exploring healthy and flexible ways of dealing with stressful situations that can lead to improved mental wellbeing."

The grand final of MindPlay will be held at the Hunter Theatre on Thursday, June 19.

To purchase tickets, visit www.hspa. nsw.edu.au or visit the box office located on the Hunter School of Performing Arts grounds on Cameron Street, Broadmeadow.

A life-changing success Samaritans' student accommodation service going from strength to strength

• AMELIA PARROTT W @amelia_parrott

Samaritans celebrated one year since the launch of its student accommodation service at Wickham last week by reflecting on the

achievements of its tenants. The unique approach to affordable hous

ing offers stable accommodation to young people at risk of homelessness, who are taking part in tertiary education.

The holistic service, which operates out of the old Wickham Public School building, not only gives young tenants a roof over their head, it also offers support to assist them in their studies and personal life as they transition to independence.

Samaritans senior worker of case work and Youthdirect, Carrie Bock said four tenants had already transitioned out of the program and into independent living.

growing fresh produce in their vegetable garden, barbeque in the outdoor courtyard, and have professional portraits taken of themselves for use in resumes.

Before moving into Samaritans' student accommodation 12 months ago, 24-yearold Shahni Bidwell had been living in refuges, student accommodation and in friend's spare bedrooms since the age of17.

She said her past living situations had not been good for her mental health but she found living in the Samaritans student accommodation to be overwhelmingly positive.

Her studio apartment is just a fiveminute walk to Hamilton TAFE, where Miss Bidwell is currently undertaking a Certificate Four in Community Services.

"It's really good that it's so close to everything because I'm sure I'm not the only one here that finds it can be really isolating living by yourself or being in our situation so it's really good to be close to things that are happening around town," she said.

"Young people at risk of homelessness, without a roof over their head there is not a lot of moving forward you can do until you have a safe, secure place to work on your goals," she said. Samaritans Student Accommodation tenants Shahni Bidwell and Kirsty Gay

Samaritans director of development, Lynne Graham said the charity planned to establish a mentor program in the second year of the service, which would provide tenants with advice on job interview techniques, CVs, personal presentation and potential career paths.

"In the past year we had a young woman studying hospitality get work experience at a cafe.

"They thought she had incredible leadership qualities and asked her to do

paid work as a casual. She worked her way up from there to being a team leader at that cafe and she recently moved on to independent accommodation and is

Mayfield is back on the NBN Co. rollout map, with fixed line build preparation now underway.

Construction on the National Broadband Network had begun in the suburb prior to last year's Federal election but Mayfield had subsequently been removed from the rollout maps without explanation.

NBN Co updated its maps last Thursday and they now show the build preparation phase has started in Raworth, Tenambit, Morpeth and Mayfield.

readying Telstra's pits and pipes ahead of physical construction.

"This new measure lets families and businesses know earlier on in the rollout process that the NBN is coming so they can start exploring how they might take advantage of high-speed broadband," he said.

Newcastle MP Sharon Claydon said she was delighted to see Mayfield back on the map but still held concerns over the way the Government was handling the rollout of the NBN.

"I am concerned with the process the Government is following on the rollout and what this means for the rest of Newcastle," she said.

Tayla goes to Hollywood Edgeworth Public School student wins DreamWorks competition

• PAUL MONFORTE

In the world of animation, there aren't many bigger names than DreamWorks.

With Steven Spielberg as principal partner, DreamWorks has been responsible for such box-office smashes as the Shrek and Madagascar series of movies.

Bearing that in mind, it's not hard to understand why lo-year-old Tayla Collins from Cameron Park was so excited to win the Woolworths DesignA-Hero competition, which will see her 'Lollypop Lady' drawing incorporated into a one-of-a-kind collectible card by an artist at DreamWorks Animation. Tayla and her family will travel to DreamWorks Animation's Los Angeles studio.

Tayla used Kim Hedley, school crossing supervisor at Edgeworth Public School as the inspiration for her design.

"It's so cool to have won this competition," Tayla said. "I chose to enter a drawing of my school's lollypop lady because she saves children's lives every day and is a real life hero to my friends and me.

Mini Expo at City and Wallsend libraries Talk to Ashley & Marlin today As part of Men's Health Week, Newcastle Region Library will offer a program until Saturday to provide men with the information they need to stay healthy. The Men's Health Week Mini Expo at the City and Wallsend library branches will focus specifically on the unique health issues that affect men. "Newcastle Region Library will participate in Men's Health Week:' said Carol Edmonds, Library Public Programs Coordinator. "This year's theme is to celebrate the value of boys and men and their everyday successes in life?' "Part of caring about and appreciating boys and men in our society means helping them look after their health needs. The City and Wallsend libraries are offering a series of events that will provide information to help men understand their health risks and know what to do about them. ''We hope that men in the community will join us for these free sessions:' said Edmonds. "It's a wonderful opportunity to learn about men's health issues from experts in the field and find out how to stay healthy and live well for as long as possible?' All events and talks are free of charge and no bookings are required. For more information about these events, call 02 4974 5344, [email protected] or go to the Library's website www.newcastle. nsw.gov.au/library

I f you've noticed your hair is thinning on the top of your head (and the hair around the side and back is

still the same), or your hairline is receding, the chances are you have Genetic Male Pattern Baldness.

Genetic Male Pattern Baldness is the most common type of hair loss affecting males. This type of hair loss is caused by two factors: genetics and a hormone called DIIT (Dihydro-testosterone).

You have two options regarding this condition. One is to live with it. Alternatively, you can be proactive and treat the condition at Ashley & Martin.

Blocking DIIT is essential in stopping your progression of hair loss. There are two products to combat the formation of this hormone.

Real GROWTH prescription tablets, which are proven to block over 60 per cent of DHT production and Real GROWTH capsules - a herbal product that is indicated to block 50 per cent of DHT production.

These products will stop your baldness but will not assist in growing your hair back. To grow your hair back, Ashley & Martin have developed a unique solution.

To grow hair Ashley & Martin prescribe their specially-formulated Real GROWTH solution. It is prescription-only product and is handmade by the pharmacists at the Ashley & Martin dispensary. It has

M ega Save Chemist Charlestown offers an extensive range of products and services for

health and wellness. Customers are able to receive profes

sional holistic healthcare advice. Mega Save Chemist believes in educating and promoting a healthy community culture through professional guidance, demonstrations, screenings, clinics, preventative supplements, including vitamins and foods, as well as information regarding local specialists and consultants.

"Being a part of Men's Health Week, we are proud to take the time to focus on

the men in everyone's lives," Mega Save Chemist Charlestown pharmacist Brady Haskell said.

"The main aim of Men's Health Week is to educate males about health and wellbeing issues that relate to them, since there is a belief that men think their health does not matter."

Due to a lack of education, awareness and culturally-conditioned behaviour patterns in work and social lives, men's health seems to take the a back seat, leading to deterioration in the well-being of Australian men.

In Australia, a female's life expectancy

is approximately 82 years, while males live on average 78 years.

Men suffer from increased accidents, illness and have a higher mortality rate as compared to their female counterparts. Amazingly, men are four times more likely to commit suicide than females.

Blokes' back pain

As part of a new campaign to coincide with Men's Health Week, men in the Hunter have the chance to enter the Back Cave at Westfield Kotara this weekend to seek answers on treatment for back pain. The 'Don't Turn Your Back On It' campaign, supported by Arthritis and Osteoporosis NSW, seeks to raise awareness among men of chronic inflammatory back pain and, more specifically, Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease of the spine. The Back Cave will be an information hub specifically designed for men, featuring leather lounges, men's magazines, and flat screen TVs broadcasting sports events and PlayStation games. Most importantly, local male health experts will be on hand to provide information to those experiencing back pain. Men who visit The Back Cave will fill out a brief, five-question online screener, which will allow them to assess their back pain and take further steps to address it. The screener was developed by the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS), the peak international body for the management of AS. In Australia, 2.3 million men report they suffer from persistent spinal pain and 45 per cent rate their pain as severe. As many as 200,000 Australians currently live with AS. There is often a delay in diagnosis in AS patients, often taking up to 10 years to be correctly diagnosed, with men three times as likely to be affected as women.

NEWCASTLE MATTERS

Extensive upgrades for Blackbutt Reserve

Many Newcastle families have fond memories of visits to Blackbutt Reserve, a tradition continued from generation to generation.

With 182 hectares of natural bushland, Blackbutt is a unique urban oasis providing access to nature trails, wildlife exhibits, children's playgrounds and picnic space.

A major program of upgrades at Blackbutt is part of Council's four priority projects in the 2014-15 operational plan.

Improvements to existing facilities as well as new infrastructure will provide more recreational opportunities and increase the family fun factor. First up is a new amenities building and wildlife arena at Carnley Avenue. Site preparation commenced in March and work is scheduled for completion in September 2014, weather permitting.

The larger amenities building will better cater for visitors while the wildlife arena will be constructed within the wildlife exhibit to allow visitors to get up close with Blackbutt animals.

Blackbutt will remain open to visitors throughout the project and work will be conducted to conserve the area's diverse range of habitats and ecosystems.

Later plans for 2014-15, subject to funding, include three new shelters, a pathway with connecting stairway and BBQ shelters at Carnley Avenue. Planning will also commence for a new playground and picnic facilities at Richley Reserve.

Council also continues to improve educational programs at Blackbutt. The Newcastle Permanent Junior Ranger Fun Day is on again in the school holidays, Tuesday 8 July from llam-1pm at Richley Reserve.

To coincide with NAIDOC week, children will learn about Indigenous culture through dance, craft and interactive activities. More information on Junior Ranger programs is available on Council's website, www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au

LAKE MACQUARIE MATTERS

Passionate about the success of our City

Last week I was excited to announce a crucial step in our new approach to economic development in Lake Macquarie City with the appointment of Adam Cougle as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the new Lake Macquarie Economic Development Company.

Earlier this year, Lake Macquarie City Council resolved to establish an external Board to deliver economic development activities that will support retention and growth of existing local businesses, and attract more business to Lake Macquarie City.

Adam is an incredibly enthusiastic and energetic CEO. He is a financial expert and brings a wealth of international

experience to the Board, which is now well positioned to succeed in the Company's primary objective of unlocking and strengthening the economic growth potential of Lake Macquarie City.

The board is also to be congratulated for their recent work to set their goals and develop a preliminary strategy.

Members of the Board are passionate about the success of Lake Macquarie.

Our shared vision for the City is to create vibrancy and prosperity through sustainable economic growth and increased employment opportunities.

We want to build on our strengths, assisting existing businesses and targeting emerging industries to expand development in the City, while balancing the lifestyle and environmental aims of the community.

We know that we have to plan for growth and an experienced and qualified Chief Executive gives the Company the ability to instantly access the corporate and government contacts necessary for strategic regional prosperity.

I look forward to seeing the innovative approaches to economic development that will give Lake Macquarie a new standard of economic activity in the region.

HEALTH

What makes us healthy? Choices.

TIlls week's column is a letter a Doctor wrote in ... What makes us healthy? Accepting responsibility for our

exclusive control over our own body, also the flow on effect of our choices to others. I have sat down with patients and their family to talk about these things that make them healthy. I have explained the repercussions of poor lifestyle choices, such as having to be in my office talking about their health, or lack of.

I have seen them walk out with nodding smiles and their assurances changes for the better will take place.

Far too often though, sometime later I have seen the same family waiting outside a room that now contains the lifeless body of their father or brother or daughter.

There are no more smiles. No more ''I'll be alrights". Only now do they realise the amount of control they had over their state of health . At least those still alive that is.

The medical profession loves giving everything a name and it seems we have a name for this one. Sedentary Death Syndrome. It is responsible for millions of deaths a year.

So how does one catch this insidious disease? Choose to have it! It is entirely preventable. Yet people choose to succumb to it and let others around them witness their slow demise.

People cannot be forced to exercise or eat well, certainly not long term.

What can make us healthy may be as simple as looking around and seeing our family or friends or 100 other good things we have and deciding to want these things so much, that anything which helps us experience them for a few years longer, is not a chore but a gift.

Your column last week mentioned 'I don't make time' would be more accurate for the people claiming they don't 'have' time. It is definitely the conscious choice and state of mind that is failing, well before the body fails.

But at any moment we all have the potential to decide; I want to live well, vibrant and active, radiating energy that influences others. We all have this power of choice between two completely different paths. Choose wisely.

The danger of too much iron in the blood

Most of us are aware that we need the element iron, in our diet. It is vital for the development of healthy red blood cells and in particular the component called haemoglobin. Haemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen around our bodies. When we are deficient in iron, it can lead to a condition called iron deficiency anaemia. This occurs when we have too little iron to keep up with the production and replacement of haemoglobin. But what if we had too much iron?

Haemochromatosis is a genetic condition that causes the body to absorb excess amounts of iron. It is the most common genetic condition effecting Australians, occurring about 1 in 200 people with a European background. The body normally stores up to 1 gram of iron. It is stored in our joints and organs, like the liver, heart and pancreas. But in haemochromatosis, the amount of iron absorbed and stored can be much more, leading to organ damage. Left untreated it can cause cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. In the early stages, haemochromatosis has no symptoms, but as more iron is stored the symptoms can include joint pain, lethargy and weakness, abdominal pains, abnormal liver blood tests, darkened skin, hair loss, even loss of sex drive and early menopause. Haemochromatosis is often undiagnosed because the symptoms are similar to those caused by other diseases. Talk to your doctor if you have these symptoms.

The treatment for haemochromatosis is called venesection which is similar to donating blood. Usually about 500mL of blood is taken until the iron levels normalise. Once normal, venesection is performed three or four times per year for life and that is all that is needed to treat the condition. If treated early, before any damage has occurred, the condition has no effect on life expectancy. If you are diagnosed with haemochromatosis, you should avoid iron supplements and vitamin C supplements. Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron. You should avoid medication or alcohol that can strain the liver and avoid iron rich foods. It is important to inform close family members that you have been diagnosed, so they can arrange a simple blood test.

Leadership speculation

Everything old is new again. The papers are full ofnews of an unpopular government and whispers of leadership change. Malcolm Turnbull denies the rantings of Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt, and the denials become a bigger media story than the original speculation. Turnbull says he fully supports the PM and the political nerds and spin-doctors go into hyperdrive. Is this how Australians expect their leaders to be chosen?

Battles for political leadership are timeless and rarely dull. Billy Hughes had one of the most colourful prime ministerships, first as the leader of the Labor Party and then swapping sides to form his own party, National Labor. Hughes was the first Australian PM to be deposed as leader. He went on to change party several more times in his career. Leadership is rarely a simple process. John Howard was Opposition Leader twice before becoming PM, Keating took two challenges to get his foot across the Kirribilli threshold, and the infamous Rudd/Gillard battles lasted years. Abbott owes his own political fortune to leadership instability. How ironic it would be ifhe was felled by the same process that got him there.

More importantly this constant leadership speculation reflects the absences of quality journalism in the mainstream press. It costs far less to print gossip and speculation, next to a poll result paid for by someone else, than it does to pay real journalists to analyse the impact of policy and investigate the hidden stories that reveal the true nature of our society.

Superfund insurance

Recently we have been contacted by a number of people in regards to communications that they've received from their industry super fund about changes to their insurance. Specifically these people are concerned about the substantial increase in the amount they will be charged for their insurance premiums.

We have had cases where clients have shown us letters from their industry super fund stating they are going to be increasing their insurance premiums, two of which are increasing by approximately 550% and 650%!

The insurance premium increases come after the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) issued several warnings last year to group insurers (who provide the group insurance inside of super) that their group insurance premiums were too low to be sustainable. Some ofthe industry have justified the increases in industry super fund insurance premiums as compensation for the higher than expected total and permanent disability (TPD) and income protection claims. If you have received notification from your super fund

about an insurance premium increase, you can contact an insurance broker or professional financial planner who will take into account your individual needs to ensure you understand your superannuation and insurance options. Disclaimer: This editorial provides general information only. Before making any financial decisions, consult a financial planner to take into account your individual needs.

Highlighting men's health

It is hardly news that men approach the issue of their health and wellbeing a lot differently to women.

This is not only seen anecdotally but official data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics highlights that men are more likely than women to engage in risky behaviours such as substance abuse and dangerous driving and they also have a higher incidence of many conditions, and are more likely to die from certain causes.

This week we are celebrating Men's Health Week (www.menshealthweek.org.au) across Australia and this event differs from many campaigns that aim to shock, scare, compel or otherwise encourage people in the community to do 'more of this and less of that'. Rather, Men's Health Week aims to empower people on the frontline of health to work with and reach out to local men and boys.

Encouraging men to speak to health professionals and look after themselves is important. Your pharmacist is there to provide advice, counselling and professional services along with dispensing prescription medicines. More information on men's health issues is available from pharmacies providing Self Care health information. These pharmacies have a range of fact cards on men's health topics such as erectile dysfunction and prostate problems. Ring 1300 369 772 or log onto the Pharmaceutical Society website www.psa.org.au and click on Self Care then 'Use the Self Care Pharmacy Finder' for the nearest location.

RUGBY UNION

Getting our children active Rugby tots program introducing sport to youngsters in a fun and friendly environment

• PAUL MONFORTE

Parents in the Hunter wanting to get their young children involved in sport are turning to the Rugbytots program.

Billed as Australia's first rugby-specific play program for young children, Rugbytots originated in England in 2006 with the Australian arm of the business run by Shaun Weidemann.

"I've played rugby from a very early age right up to first grade senior rugby growing up in South Africa," Mr Weidemann said.

"I started Rugby tots, because there were no sporting activities for children aged 2-4 years.

"Rugby tots not only teaches kids motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination, it also teaches them how to play in a team environment, always listening to the whistle and playing as a team."

Mr Weidemann said the program involved non-contact activity and fun games that incorporate rugby skills.

"It also gets children active and social from a early age, which is very important in early child development," he said.

Children enjoying the Rugby tots program under the watchful eye of fully-trained coaches

Classes are held in four age groups ranging from two years of age up to 10.

All coaches undergo detailed in-house training and are certified by the Austral-

ian Rugby Union. Classes are held at Don and Allan Lawrence Park, Thornton and Marcellin Park, Maitland.

For more information on pricing and

specific times and dates, contact Shaun on 0403419340 or [email protected]

Youngsters given the chance to show skills -------------- the Paul Kelly Cup is where it started • PAUL MONFORTE with his first introduction to AFL"

S hortland Public School and Wallsend South Public School progressed to the Hunter Regional Final in both the boys

and girls division of the Paul Kelly Cup after the recent gala day held at Maryland's Bill Elliott Oval.

The Paul Kelly Cup is the largest AFL primary school knockout competition in New South Wales and the ACT and is open to students in years 5 and 6, with schools competing in round-robin carnivals in their local area.

The competition gives junior AFL teams the opportunity to compete in the regional finals, where they will be up against 1000 other teams and 10,000 participants vying for the chance to play in the finals on the Sydney Cricket Ground.

"Games are played on a smaller field using modified 12-a-side rules which allow children who are new to the game to experience and enjoy AFL in a safe and fun environment," said AFL NSW/ACT regional coordinator, Craig Golledge.

"For Swans players like Kieren Jack

Primary sponsor of the Paul Kelly Cup, Yogurtland, provide a gift card for the player ofthe match for every game.

"The Paul Kelly Cup is a fantastic initiative that supports local kids, and as well as encouraging the next generation of AFL stars," said CEO of Yogurtland Australia, Paul Siderovski.

The Hunter region holds four zone galas - Maitland, Port Stephens, Wallsend and Lake Macquarie - with the top two boys and girls teams from each zone progressing to the Hunter Regional Final.

In addition to the Paul Kelly Cup, the NAB AFL Auskick School program can be arranged to introduce children to the game.

The program runs over the duration of six to ten weeks and is delivered by AFL NSW/ACT staff at the school. The focus is on the development of fundamental movement skills as well as teaching the students basic AFL skills. This program can be run at anytime during the school day.

For more information on AFL in the Hunter, contact regional coordinator Craig Golledge on 4973 2799 or at craig. [email protected]

Taggart the target up front Jets striker makes the final cut as part of 23-man Socceroos squad for World Cup

Newcastle Jets striker Adam Taggart has been selected in the Socceroos' final 23-man squad fortheFIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti was omitted from Ange Postecoglu's squad, but will remain in Brazil with the Australian team ahead of their opening World Cup match against Chile on June 14 (AEST).

Birighitti is expected to serve as a back-up for fellow shot-stopper Mitch Langerak, who is carrying a knee injury.

The squad will be captained bymidfielder Mile Jedinak with Tim Cahill, Mark Bresciano and Mark Milligan becoming the first Australian football players to represent the Socceroos at three World Cup tournaments following the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Socceroos squad is made up of three goalkeepers, six defenders, 10 midfielders and four strikers with seven of the 23 players currently playing in the Hyundai A-League.

As well as Birighitti, the other players to miss out on the final squad are Josh Kennedy, Tom Rogic and Luke Wilkshire.

Back-rowers to lead the way Return of Scott and Smith to Knights line-up vital to hopes of rescuing disappointing season

• MATT LOGUE NEWCASTLEKNIGHTS.COM.AU

Beau Scott has claimed his first Origin win in Queensland, now he has his sights firmly set on resurrecting the Knights' disappointing season.

The veteran forward missed last the loss to the Warriors in Auckland due to a neck injury and fatigue following the opening Origin but after positive scan results, returned to take on the Wests Tigers last weekend.

"I guess 1 was on a high for a couple of days after the (Origin) game, but not so much now because I'm back to work and I've got a job to do here in Newcastle;' said Scott, who admitted the opening Origin in Brisbane was one of the toughest games in his career.

"I had a little bit of a sore neck and obviously a bit of fatigue after the game.

"But I've had a scan on the neck and it's all clear now, so I'm ready to go.

"I guess coming back to Newcastle we need to tum things around here at the moment:'

Knights and NSW State of Origin star Beau Scott (right)

match on June 18 will be missing from the match.

The Knights' NSW Cup team will play the Newtown Jets on Saturday at 3pm at Henson Park.

Meanwhile, the Knights Newcastle Knights has confirmed it will playa trial match against the Canberra Raiders at Seiffert Oval in Queanbeyan in 2015.

The Raiders and Knights have both formally agreed to play the trial match at the venue on Saturday February 21, 2015.

Knights General Manager of Football Warren Smiles said the Knights look forward to the reciprocal trial match in Canberra.

"It is great to have our 2015 trial match against the Canberra Raiders locked in;' Smiles said.

"We were fortunate to host Canberra last year when we took our trial match to Tamworth and as a reciprocal agreement, we play Canberra at their preferred venue?'

Scott said the return of former Dragons teammate Jeremy Smith, who resumed from a knee injury against the Tigers, was a huge boost to the side.

"When you've got an experienced player like Jeremy on the sideline, it's not going to help anyone's cause;' Scott said.

The Knights head down to Sydney this weekend for the clash against the Roosters at Allianz Stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday night.

The Queanbeyan City Council has endorsed the proposal presented by the Raiders to host the trial match at Seiffert Oval in 2015 and have committed $1 million to upgrading the facility over the course of the next financial year.

The remainder of the 2015 pre-season calendar is to be confirmed. "It's good to have him back in the side?' Players involved in the second State of Origin
