A Lago Scholarship Foundation Offers 20 Students Opportunity To Study Abroad; Renews 37 Grants

Twenty island graduates have

been offered the opportunity to con-

tinue their education abroad through

This is the twenty-fourth consecu-

tive year that the Lago Scholarship

Foundation offers financial aid to deserving young people in the com- munity who wish to advance in life. The students, who have been awarded an LSF grant, have earned it on the basis of excellent school grades, high scores in the various tests re- quired to qualify for Lago Scholar- ship Foundation consideration, a strong interest in their chosen career - which tie in with Aruba’s need -, and a positive attitude towards achieving their goal as demonstrated in interviews with the LSF Board.

The students, who have received a scholarship to study at USA univer- sities, are: Georgina Arends (Chemis- try) - Bowling Green University, Ohio; Francisco Acosta (Business Admini- stration) - Stetson University, Florida; Frank E. Hodgson (Electrical En- gineering) - Stevens University of Technology, New Jersey; Erwin G. Boekhoudt (Electrical Engineering), Raymond J. Lago Action Program Provides CLEAR View Of Areas Requiring Good Housekeeping Efforts

Webster's Dictionary defines hou-

sekeeping” as 1. the management

of a house and home affairs, and 2.

the care and management of pro-

perty and the provision of equip-

ment and services (as for an in-

dustrial organization).

Good housekeeping at home is what a housewife strives for and a

husband expects for an orderly, plea-

sant and safer life. At Lago, good

housekeeping is what Management strives for and expects through the

cooperation of all employees at Lago

the maintenance of a clean, safe and

pleasant work area.

Under the present housekeeping

program — which will be worked in-

to a major Company Policy — alrea-

dy significant changes have been ta- king place. The principal objective

of the program is not a ’’one-time”

cleaning campaign, or a_ periodic

"housekeeping campaign” or a com-

petition-type : ’’keep-your-area-clean-

and-receive-a-pat-on-the-back”’ cam-

paign. Lago’s aim is to MOTIVATE

the individual employee to work neat- ly and orderly as a HABIT.

Under the direction of our CLEAR * Administrator Nelo Emerencia, a

three-prong Lago Action program is well underway and in many respects, the gefheral appearance of the refine- ry complex is beginning to show im- provements. The program consists

Of

1. Start your own ’’maintain-as- you-go” program: each one of us is to tidy up his immediate area and maintain it orderly and clean.

In this program, Lago is coordina-

ting clean-up actions for each area. These actions are being performed jointly by all Lago and contractor em- ployees in that area, and all supervi- sors — including top management members.

2. Clean up and beautification program to address major areas. Other groups, including contractor forces, are currently tackling major areas for clean-up and beautification Purposes. This program will be in- corporating the road system and the

open area in the refinery as well.

3. Training program to sustain good housekeeping practices. Ses- sions with various groups of emplo- yees and members of management are being held in various areas in the refinery to motivate everyone to mo- dify his housekeeping habits and to develop an awareness of the fact that

good housekeepnig is too important to leave it to the other guy: it is the responsibility of each man as part of

his job! One of the activities where the

"maintain-as-you-go"’ action MUST

take place is during turnaround work.

Clean-up, while inspection and repair

jobs on a unit are taking place, must

be done simultaneously. One striking

example, which proves that it can be

done, is the recent turnaround of the NFAR unit. Housekeeping awareness

among employees has started to show

during this major job. To accomp-

lish this, the employees worked in

teams while the unit turnaround was going on. At the end of the post- turnaround period, the NFAR unit was

in ship-shape condition. The same cooperation is expected during the current turnaround at Pipestill No. 7

and V2AR.

CLEAR Administrator Nelo Eme- rencia is currently discussing the

three-prong Lago Action Program

with all division superintendents and

other top-management members to

follow up on the clean-up actions and to work on an effective good house-

keeping training program. In the days ahead, many of YOU will be approa-

ched by Nelo to solicit your sugges- tions and any other information which can be used towards the establish- ment of a sound Lago Good House- keeping Policy. It is only in a UNIT- ED way that the good housekeeping program can become and remain suc-

cessful and make our Company —

Lago — a cleaner, easier and safer place to work and a source of pride

to us.

Do Not Carry Gasoline Inside Your Car: tt Can Be Very Dangerous

Don't carry gasoline around in your car. One gallon of gasoline has the explosive power of 15 sticks of dy- namite.

This is the best advise you can get, because carrying a spare container of gasoline inside the passenger com- partment or the trunk of a car is real- ly dangerous.

Gasoline vapors can irritate the eyes, nose and throat — and can cause drowsiness, especially in a closed or air-conditioned car. Such conditions, of course, would be un- healthy for passengers, but could have even more serious results if af- fecting the driver.

Even worse is the danger of fire. It is fairly obvious how disastrous a gasoline fire could be in the passen- ger compartment of a car. But the risk of rear-end collisions makes it particularly dangerous to carry gaso- line in the trunk of a car.

To store and carry gasoline for

lawn mowers and other motor-driven

home machinery, here are several Ex-

xon recommendations :

— Use an approved metal can with

a tight screw-on spring cover, equip-

ped with a spout or designed so con-

tents can be poured out without spil-

ling.

Service station operations in the

U.S.A. are required by law and by lo-

cal fire codes to observe strict safe-

ty practices. Such regulations pre-

vent operators from putting gasoline

into non-approved containers.

— Take the gasoline can out of your

Car to fill it.

— Go directly home and take the

can out of the car as soon as you

get there.

— Don't take the can of gasoline

into the house. Keep it in the ga-

rage or some other well-ventilated

area away from a water heater or other source of ignition.

Gasoline is a useful and valuable

product — one that requires careful

use and storage. And it’s good to

keep in mind that one gallon of gaso-

lin has the explosive power of 15

sticks of dynamite.
