Dear Friend,

I am so thankful that you have joined us on our “StrongHer” journey! I am asking God to reveal himself to you in new ways as you dive into his Word through this Study and that you will feel empowered to walk bravely into your world to be a true difference maker for Him. I once heard it said that 99% of knowing God’s will for your life was found simply in knowing God. The greatest way to know God is to develop a consistent time with Him in your life, in prayer (how you speak to God) and Bible reading (how God speaks to you).

I’m going to encourage you for the next six weeks to find a set time every day to meet with God at a time that works for you. When I was in high school, it was late in the evening before I went to bed. When I was a young mom, it was a stolen moment during nap times. As I’m getting older, I find that I much prefer meeting with Him first thing in the morning. I believe if you will carve out a time to meet with God, it will be the most meaningful thing you will do this year. You’ll find your anxiety lowering, your hope and trust growing, and your peace at an all-time high.

I’d also encourage you to find a special “green pasture,” as Pastor Christian preached in one of his previous sermon series. Identify a place that is special to you where you can meet God and develop a place of Holy Spirit moments. For me this is my office/laundry/play/junk room. After Christian’s message, I actually cleared this entire room out, painted it a soothing color and added a chair I really loved. I’ve heard other ladies talk about a special closet or chair, their deck or patio, or even their bedroom.

Once you find your place, identify your weapons of “war,” your spiritual tools. For me, I love to have a big study Bible, a journal, colorful pens, and a stack of notecards to write special verses to memorize. Much like new workout clothes or sneakers encourage you to go for a run, I find that my special spiritual tools encourage me to dive in. Invest in your spiritual growth and have fun with it!

The Bible Study method we are using in this series, the SOAP method, is one that I personally use every week. I started reading the Bible this way in the last year and I can honestly say that I’ve never applied more or remembered more from my daily reading than when I’ve used this method. I’m so excited for you to get to experience it!

Page 5: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

Lastly, the greatest spiritual moments in my life have usually happened in the context of community. This Bible Study will be most impactful in your life when you are plugged into a small group; learning and growing as you live this out in fellowship with other ladies. If you’ve never participated in a small group before, I am going to strongly encourage you to stick with it for the entire six-week session. Be faithful to your group and you’ll find that God will use other ladies to open your eyes, challenge your faith, and encourage you in tremendous ways.

Praying for you and excited to see God make you StrongHER in the months to come!

Suggested Guidelines for Your Small Group

Group AttendancePlease give priority to the weekly group meeting. We will begin and end on time and we ask that you let your group leader know if you will be late or absent.

Healthy EnvironmentWe want to create a safe place where people feel they can be heard and feel loved. The group agrees to be slow in answering and to make no quick judgments or accusations. We will honor all personal sharing by keeping it in the group.

Respect OthersPlease limit what you share to your own experiences and use “I” statements as often as possible. Please refrain from putting down any specific people, churches or denominations. We desire our speech to be gentle and gracious to people with different personal opinions, temperaments, and levels of spiritual maturity. We are all works in progress.

Silence is OkIt is ok to have silence between responses as the group shares. Silence gives members the opportunity to reflect. Remember, there is no pressure to share.

Be PreparedTo get the most out of our time together, please do the at-home five weekly Bible readings and journaling. Please bring your Bible Study guide and journal to small group each week.

Should you have any group needs or questions arise as you go through the study please feel free to email [email protected]

Meet Your Bible Study ContributorsDanielle Newsome (Chapter 1)Christian and Danielle planted Journey Church International in September 2011. Danielle is wife to Christian, mom to “Little” Christian (17) & Kasey (14) and her fur child Rudy, and she serves as the Creative Arts Director at Journey. She loves going on dates, long outdoor walks, hot coffee, and watching her kids in their sporting and music activities. Her weakness is chocolate chip cookies and she currently has a love/hate relationship with CrossFit. Her heart is to see the women of Journey rise up to be spiritual influencers in their families, homes, and community!

Jenilee Mullikin (Chapter 2)Jenilee grew up in a ministry home and in her 20’s lead a youth ministry for five years. In 2011 she married Jeff, and together they launched a very successful photography business. Not long after that Jeff surprised Jenilee by sharing his desire to pursue his dream of coaching college baseball; he currently coaches in Toccoa Falls, Georgia. Jenilee spends her days raising her two little girls, Savannah and Sadie (age 3 and 1). When she’s NOT changing diapers, picking up legos and making PB&J’s, she enjoys traveling, reading, hiking and the beach! And, in case you’re wondering, Jenilee is also the kid-sister of Danielle and one of the core launch team members of JCI.

Tara Stafford (Chapter 3)Tara is a British period drama junkie and anglophile forever. She has been serving as the Infant Preschool Director at Journey since 2015 and loves teaching and leading the next generation. She is a dog mom to Rodger and Winnie and loves sipping coffee at Love, Coffee whenever she can. Tara desires to see

young single women love God, love others, and love themselves.

Terry Rank (Chapter 4)Terry and Jon have been attending Journey since it was first birthed 7 years ago. Terry is wife of Jonathan, and girl mom to Tessa, Eleanor, Maggie, and Penny. She loves reading and longs for a simpler life. Terry and her family have embraced Journey’s mission, which is to see people (and kids) far from God become passionate Christians that make a difference in the world. On a typical Sunday, you will find Terry leading and serving in JKids in the NextGen Ministries. Terry desperately wants to see kids and their parents connect to Jesus in a deep and meaningful way.

Heidi Bailey (Chapter 5)Heidi is wife to Sam, mom to Hannah, Eva, and Jonah and she serves as the K-2 Coordinator in JKids. She has a heart for the next generation and loves the joy that kids bring to ministry. She enjoys running and reading and has recently discovered that even CrossFit can be fun when done with friends!

Stephanie Ward (Chapter 6)Stephanie joined the ministry team at JCI in 2015. They both have a passion for seeing the next generation of believers owning and growing in their walk with Jesus. Stephanie is a proud Army and pastor’s wife to Kyle, and mom to Elijah and Isaiah. She loves traveling and adventuring with her family, especially when those travels involve discovering tasty international foods. She wants to see the women of Journey have such a firm foundation in Jesus Christ that when the trials of life come, they will not be shaken.

Cheri Hennig (Daily Devotional Contributor)Cheri wears a lot of hats at JCI, but her favorites are Community Outreach and Global Impact Coordinator, Kindergarten Small Group Leader, and occasional baby snuggler. She has been married to Eric for 11 years, and they have one shark-loving kindergartener and two huge, furry dogs. Cheri loves running, photography, hiking in the mountains, and finding ways to fit carbs and chocolate into her diet. Her love language is funny GIFs, and she is passionate about taking Jesus to “the least of these” in our community and around the world.

WHY S.O.A.P. IT?It’s one thing to simply read scripture, but when you interact with it, when you learn to slow down to REALLY read it, suddenly words start popping off the page. By SOAPing your verses you are able to dig deeper into scripture and “see” more than if you simply read the verses and then move forward with your day. Let me encourage you to take the time to S.O.A.P. the daily scripture and see for yourself how much more you get out of your daily reading……you’ll be amazed.

What Does S.O.A.P. Mean?S – The S stands for Scripture- you physically write out the scripture……you’ll be amazed what God will reveal to you just by taking the time to slow down and actually write out what you are reading! Pick one or two verses that really stand out to you and write them down.

O – The O stands for Observation- what do you see in the verses that you’re reading? Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you?

A – The A stands for Application- this is when God’s Word becomes personal. What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my own personal life? What changes do I need to make? Is there an action that I need to take?

P – And finally the P stands for Prayer- pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time in His Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life.

Studying God’s Word like this can take as little or as long as you have time to give. Some days it can take just 10 or 15 minutes, other days longer. The main idea is to allow yourself to be bathed in God’s Word by using the S.O.A.P. method so that it will saturate your soul and inspire you to respond.

Here is a S.O.A.P. ExampleS - “…the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. 7 You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ

Page 11: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

on our behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.”- Colossians 1:5-8

O - Many times you can simply bullet your observations...what you are seeing at first glance when looking at the verses:• When you combine faith and love, you get hope.• We have to remember that our hope is in heaven...it is yet to come.• The gospel is the word of truth.• The gospel is continually bearing fruit and growing from the 1st

day to the last.• It just takes one person to change a whole community...Epaphras.

A - Something that stood out to me today was how God used one man, Epaphras, to change a whole town!!! I was reminded that we are simply called to tell others about Jesus…its God’s job to spread the gospel…to grow it and have it bear fruit. I felt today’s verses were almost directly spoken to the women of Journey…“all over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God’s grace in all its truth.” Isn’t it fun when God’s Word becomes so alive and speaks directly where we are at?!!!! My prayer today is that all the women involved in this Bible Study will understand God’s grace and have a thirst for His Word.

P - Dear Lord, please help me to be a “Epaphras”…to tell others about you and then leave the results in your loving hands. Please help me to understand and apply what I have read today to my life personally, becoming more and more like you each and every day. Help me to live a life that bears the “fruit” of faith and love…anchoring my hope in heaven, not here on earth. Help me to remember that the BEST is yet to come!

The most important ingredients in the S.O.A.P. method is your INTERACTION with God’s Word and your APPLICATION of His Word for YOUR life.

“STEP OUT OF THE BOAT”w i t h D A N I E L L E N E W S O M E

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and

that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” - Hebrews 11:6

I’m stronger than…my greatest fears.“…and God I pray that you would give Christian and Danielle the faith to step out and do what you’ve called them to do planting a church, or if they don’t have the faith, I pray that you would kick them off the cliff so they have no other option than to do it. Amen.” Have you ever had someone pray something for you that you did not give him or her permission to pray? As the last words of our new friend’s very faith-filled prayer ended, my inner monologue went a little more like this…“Uh, excuse us God, but we are going to need to take that last prayer back. We did not give our friend permission to pray that special blessing over us. Please disregard that last statement about kicking us off the cliff. Thank you and amen.” This was my exact reaction on July 8, 2010, as Christian and I stood in the back of a hot, muggy gym filled with teenagers, on the campus of our alma mater Liberty University. Christian had been invited to speak at Go Tell Youth Camp and one of the other speakers was a man named Clayton King. Clayton is a passionate evangelist and a dynamic communicator who happened to be close friends with several church planters who were making a significant impact on the world through their new churches. As he heard our story that we shared with him, it was a story he had heard before and seen lived out in the lives of his friends. I think he sensed our tentative faith and belief and our overwhelming amount of fear and questioning. Was God really calling us to step out and plant a church? We asked him to speak life into us and to pray over us as we continued to seek out God’s calling on our life. Even though I didn’t completely agree with his “violent” prayer, God knit our hearts together and a friendship began that has still lasted today. If you’ve been at Journey

Page 13: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

for very long you’ve heard Clayton and his wife Sharie speak and minister to our church. I truly believe Clayton’s prayer was one of the first moments I began to feel a spark of faith that told me maybe we could actually do this church-planting thing. The Holy Spirit used him and his prayer to breathe life into my timid soul and God began to fan the small flame that was lit that day. I shouldn’t have been surprised that God would challenge our faith because our story actually began long before July of 2010. It began when Christian and I met at Liberty University in 1998 and he decided he would leave his almost completed education degree to transfer into ministry, regardless of what his parents and academic advisors recommended. It continued a few short years later when we jumped into youth ministry together even though we were practically babies ourselves. Then God continued to test and fan our faith flame as we had kids, started new ministry roles throughout the years, and suffered the hurts, betrayals, and discouragements that ultimately come with ministry life. In every case He had proven himself faithful. About nine years into our ministry life God again began something new in Christian’s heart. I’ve heard an older pastor describe it as the “holy discontent.” Even though we were doing great ministry where we were, Christian began to feel like his heart was shaped for something more. Was God calling him to be a lead pastor? Was God calling him to the mission field because of his great heart for international missions and helping hurting people? He didn’t know exactly what God was calling him to, it just became more and more clear that God was not calling him to stay in his current and comfortable ministry role. The not knowing created a depression and frustration that God eventually answered on October 23, 2009. At a church growth conference in Seoul, South Korea, after hearing a pastor speak on faith and say, “what is God trying to birth in your womb of faith if you would just push?” Christian answered definitively from his heart to the Lord…plant a church. In his prayer time during that message, he wrote in his journal what he felt like the Holy Spirit was confirming to him…Journey Church International, Jackson County, Missouri, Fall 2011. Now it’s one thing to have a total God moment halfway around the world where you decide you should plant a church, and it’s a whole other thing to get your wife and mother of two small babies on board!

Page 14: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

I would like to say my instant reaction to this “God moment” in Christian’s life was awe, glee and support, but it was more like white-faced, soul-draining fear. I was relatively comfortable where I was. We had built a nice house, my kids loved their school, we lived in a great neighborhood with a million kids, and I had a ministry position I enjoyed leading. If I was honest with myself, however, I had always seen and known that God would have something more for Christian and myself. The culmination of hundreds of little experiences he had given us through our first nine years of ministry was all leading up to this moment. It’s funny how God can speak something into your soul that you kindly choose to ignore because deep down you think you know best! I’m almost ashamed to admit now, in hindsight, that it took nine months from October of 2009 to July of 2010 to get me fully on board. Something in Clayton’s prayer allowed it to finally “click” for me. I didn’t suddenly lose all my fear, but a spark of faith took root and began to grow.

What began from that prayer was a whirlwind of attending conferences, visiting churches, learning, growing, meeting other pastors, selling our house and lots of our possessions, moving to a new community and new schools and praying that this faith experiment would really work. There were some really special moments of new intimacy we developed with God as we were so dependent on Him and there were also some really funny moments too that kept us lighthearted. For example, I remember the time we were with one pastor of a huge mega church backstage after service trying to ask questions and learn while our kids were going PSHYCO next to us and his poor assistant was trying to keep them contained. “Check please!” There was also the time we encouraged the kids to take notes on churches we visited and contribute their ideas for Journey. After one visit Kasey (age 7) was taking “notes” on her little notepad and little Christian (age 9) began to cry while she attempted to write his notes down. Christian said, “Son, what’s wrong? What’s the problem with Kasey writing down your ideas?” Little Christian answered, totally serious, “But Dad, I thought I was your assistant pastor!” Looking back now, each and every moment, hard and funny, are ones I will always cherish. You’ve probably heard it said that “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear,” or that “the brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” I think spiritually that is also true in our

Page 15: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

lives. Being brave and having faith does not mean that we will never be afraid again. We are now seven years into our church plant and there are times I’m still afraid but I’m learning that… I’m stronger when…I learn to step out in faith. One of my favorite people in the entire Bible is the disciple Peter. I think it’s because he feels so “real” to me with all his blunders, mistakes, and the way he so passionately and hastily rushed into so many missteps, all unintentionally. It’s probably because he reminds me so much of myself. For those of you Enneagram followers, I’d like to think Peter is a 3 like me. [Symbol] One of the best stories about him in the Bible is found in Matthew 14 when Jesus walks on the Sea of Galilee and invites Peter out of the boat to also walk on water. If you read the story carefully you will actually notice that Peter sort of invited himself out to walk on the water. He actually asked Jesus if he could walk to him…I mean who does that!? His first few steps started strong but eventually his fear got the best of him and he began to sink. There are so many things we can learn from this faith story and from Peter. First, we have to see that our faith is built when we first learn to take a step. The first step is ALWAYS the hardest and I imagine that first move out of the boat had to be the bravest and courageous step Peter ever took in his life. One has to wonder if that one step toward Jesus eventually gave him the faith he would need as he would take a step toward his own cross to be crucified upside down for his love for Jesus. We learn from Peter that every move of God in your life will first take a step of faith. You can’t truly see God until you are willing to first step out and each blessing comes only after first taking a STEP of faith. We have to step out on the water before we can receive our miracle. We also learn from Peter that even if we take a step of faith, most likely we will eventually fail in some way. His faith got him through the first couple steps, but as he saw the obstacles and external influences of the waves and the wind, he began to sink. #epicfail There have definitely been some times in my own life and in the life of our church when we’ve had some fail moments. I think the key here is to not let failure hold us back but instead let it teach us and mold us into the more mature and solid people God wants us to become. The poet, William F. O’Brien once said it’s, “better to try and fail than never to try at all,” and I’d have to think Jesus would agree.

Page 16: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

I think the last thing we learn from Peter is that when we fail, Jesus will be there. When Peter began to sink and cried out, “Lord, save me!” it says immediately Jesus reached out his hand to lift him up. I’m so thankful we don’t serve a God who wants to let us drown a little to teach us a lesson but instead he is immediately available to lift us up when we cry out to him. Jesus safely returned him to the boat and I believe Jesus is cheering us on as we get out of our own comfortable “boats” we’ve established in life to take a step of faith. Even when we fail he knows (like a good father does) that he will be there to pick us up, dust us off, and send us out again, this time stronger than before. We are stronger because even in our failures, our faith is being built. The thing I am realizing as I’ve been a Christian now for 30+ years is that my big faith steps are not one-time things. I don’t work myself up for a big faith step and then dust my hands off and think, “check-marked step of faith off my Christian to do list.” God actually calls me to continue to take steps of faith in my Christian life because he wants me to live on a faith journey for my whole existence. I can’t live on yesterday’s faith moments; I need to be rejuvenated by new faith experiences today. In 1993, a major outbreak of diphtheria threatened Russia and doctors attributed the widespread outbreak to an immunization failure that came from the lack of vaccine booster shots. Many people received their initial vaccine shots but they failed to follow up with the necessary booster shots, which led to an outbreak of the disease among adults. Much like these Russians, I believe there are so many Christian “patients” walking around in spiritual illness because they are living on the faith vaccination of yesterday and not the continuous “booster” needed to carry them on to the future of their walk with Christ. As we look at the first seven years of ministry at Journey there is so much to celebrate…

• 2,374 Spiritual Decisions for Christ • 451 Public Baptisms by Immersion • 96 Parent/Child Dedications • 235 People serving on the Foreign Mission Field • 100’s of People serving the local Lee’s Summit Community • $1,088,593 invested in local/global missions and church planting As I look at these numbers, and every number represents a person,

Page 17: LADIES SMALL GROUP STUDY - takethejourney.cc

StrongHer

many of whom I can picture their faces and stories, I can’t help but be humbled and amazed. What if Journey had never existed? What if Satan would have allowed our fear to keep us from stepping out in faith? And yet, as great as these things are and as much as God has done, I know my faith cannot live forever on the wins of yesterday. God is calling me even today to step out again, to keep testing and pushing my faith, to keep leaning on Jesus, to stay dependent, and to stay needy so that I can see God move. For you, it might not be something that seems as daunting as starting a church. For you, your step of faith might mean sharing Jesus with a friend that you’ve wanted to witness to but been hesitant. It might mean leading the way in your family spiritually to get more faithful to church. Your step of faith might be signing up to serve at church even if you don’t know a soul or it might be committing to be more generous with your finances so you can make a difference in our world. Whatever it is that God is telling you today, my challenge is simple…take one step toward Jesus, be brave, be courageous and then be amazed as He works in ways that will leave you changed forever. Group Questions:

1. What would you attempt for God if you knew it could not fail?

2. Describe an event or experience in the past where God proved to be faithful in your life?

3. What fear is holding you back from accomplishing a big dream God has laid on your heart?

4. How can this group encourage you to “step out of the boat” and take one step closer to your biggest dream?

Day 5 Devotions

Read 2 Timothy 1:6-7. Paul was writing to a very young Timothy, who was just coming into his own in terms of his faith and his ministry. When it would have been easy for Timothy to look at the culture of persecution around him, Paul reminds him not to be afraid, because of the Spirit given to us as believers.
