Effective September 1, Father Panagioti Robert Hanley will serve our parish as our permanent, full-‐time priest. Father Panagioti, who is originally from Paramus, NJ, has lived in several states from the East Coast to the Southwest. Prior to devoting his life to the ministry of the Church, he worked in public service (law enforcement), in both civilian and military capacities. In 2002, after being Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Air Force, he entered the Seminary at the Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, receiving his Bachelor Degree in 2005 and his Masters of Divinity Degree in 2008. He was ordained to the Holy Deaconate in 2007 and to the Holy Priesthood in 2014. LADIES PROGRESSIVE SOCIETY (LPS)
The LPS was once again delighted to honor a member of our parish as Father of the Year. Our 2015 Father of the Year, George Mastakas, instills his love of church and community to his children through example. Over the years, George was president of our Parish Council, while his sons have served in the Altar and his wife and his daughter are involved with Sunday School activities. He has volunteered his time and talent to teach us how to bake Prosforon and how to assemble Koliva. In a few years, he will be Father George to many; however, in 2015 he is our Father of the Year. The LPS will meet in the Hellenic Center’s conference room on August 30 and September 27 following the coffee hour. DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE (DOP) The DOP will meet on Sunday, September 13 and October 11, at 12:30 pm, at The DoubleTree on 29 North. SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2015 UPCOMING EVENTS Parents, please register your children for Sunday School on Sunday, August 30. This procedure will allow our Sunday School teachers to adequately prepare for the 2015/16 session. Registration will take place in the Hellenic Center following The Divine Liturgy. Following The Divine Liturgy on Sunday, September 6, you are cordially invited to attend a reception to welcome Father Panagioti to our parish. The 2015/16 Sunday School year will begin on Sunday, September 13. Immediately following Holy Communion, students and teachers will depart from church and meet in the Hellenic Center for classes. Mark your calendar and plan to attend the Student Luncheon on Sunday, October 4, following The Divine Liturgy. Look for specific details in weekly announcements. Please participate in Festival baking dates on Sunday, October 11, 18, and 25. This year’s GreekFest will be held on November 20. STEWARDSHIP Although stewardship pledges continue to trickle in, there is room for improvement. May the arrival of Father Panagioti to our parish and the beginning of the ecclesiastical year on September 1 inspire all of us to support the needs of our parish. COMMUNITY NEWS Deepest sympathy is extended to Kathy Albano on the loss of her father, Athanasios (Arthur) Englis, who died in June, and to the Clevenger and Georges families on the loss of their mother and sister, Constance (Connie) Georges Clevenger, who died in July. May their memories be eternal. Congratulations to Alexandra Berr (daughter of Dyan Aretakis and Stuart Berr) for recently winning a Harrison Undergraduate Research Award for a project to study genetic subtypes of brain cancer cells. Alex, a fourth-‐year UVA student majoring in biomedical engineering, plans to continue her research, earn a Ph.D., and go into academia.
Congratulations also go to James Thomas George Boudouris, Konstantina Damvakaris, and Yanni Raymond on their recent achievements. James Boudouris (son of George and Charity) graduated from Western Albemarle High School on May 29, and is continuing his education at the University of Wisconsin-‐Madison in the College of Letters and Science Honors Program. Konstantina Damvakaris (daughter of Zannis and Eleni) graduated with honors from the Renaissance School on May 30, and is attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. Yanni Raymond (son of Mark and Claire) and Knox Daniel competed at the 2015 North American School Scrabble Championship in Providence, RI, earning a stellar 3rd place out of 58 teams. In the game that sealed their 3rd place status (and generous cash prize) they played TUITIONS, thereby fittingly earning a nice deposit for their college funds. COMMUNITY THANK YOU Many thanks are sent to Tom Vangelopoulos for baking and donating the five loaves of bread that were blessed during the August 5 Vesper Services. Heart-‐felt thanks are extended to Terry Vassalos for his generosity (and delicious food!). Terry hosted a dinner at The Tip Top Restaurant on August 5 for our fifteen clerical visitors who officiated later at the Vesper Services. A special thank you goes to all parishioners who provided something for the buffet table at the reception following the Vespers and who helped set up and/or clean up. BI-MONTHLY BULLETIN AND WEBSITE The arrival of Father Panagioti to our parish may change the publication of bi-‐monthly bulletins and church website updates. Stay tuned for future developments.
