Cyber Patriot Visitors By: Elijah Morales, Sophomore

A group of distinguished guests including General John E. Hyten, Commander of the Air Force Space Command, visited Stacey on Wednesday, Sept 8 to learn more about the CyberPatriot team. Visitors also included Major

General Burke E. “Ed” Wilson, Commander of the 24th AF and AF Cyber, Mrs. Hyten and Mrs. Wilson, Dr. Roper, Ms. Mickey, several staff from the 24th AF, personnel from 24th AF Public Affairs, Lackland ISD school board

members Mr. Chris Dietert and Dr. Kevin Odom, board Liaison Lt Col Glenn D. Garay, and other honored guests.

SMSgt Brian Meeks, one the team mentors, presented information about securing computers from attack, ethical hacking, and the history of the Windows OS. Following that presentation, General Hyten talked to the students

about the importance of cyber security, the value of this knowledge in possible future careers in the AF and the outside world. He said that Air Force websites are subject to over a million hack attempts every day and that $338

billion are lost in the economy every year because of malicious hackers. He said that people who work with computers and cyber security are sometimes called ‘geeks’, but he “was proud to be called a geek” because some

of the most successful people in today’s business and tech world were called geeks.

This is the 3rd year that Stacey has fielded a CyberPatriot team. Mentors from the 24th AF, including SMSgt Meeks, MSgt James Tetrault and SSgt Patrick Weller volunteer their time to share their knowledge of cyber security with the team and prepare them for competition. Mr. Russell Keller is the team coach. The first round of competition

will be held Oct 24-26.

Ms. Street’s Student Profile

This is Isaac. Isaac says that the best place he ever lived

is Corpus Christi, Texas because he could go fishing and swimming in the ocean. Isaac is very good at art and can run really fast. One of his favorite memories is

going to LEGOLAND.

First Graders in Mrs. Allen’s class create a web of conflict. The

students were discussing “Getting Along Together” and how problems affect us all. In

class, we are all connected like a “web” and we need to know how to solve problems well, so we can

work happily together. They learned to use “I Messages” to

help resolve problems.

www.lacklandisd.net Sept. 5, 2014

Elementary Cafeteria Opening Our elementary school students will have a new place to eat lunch on Monday 8 September 2014. The1950’s era cafeteria and administration building has been renovated to bring this building up to current standards. Our renovated elementary cafeteria and associated special education offices are a result of planning for our future with a funding partnership through the U.S. Department of Education. One of the special features of this building is the retrofit to meet the security requirements for the anti-terrorism protection with blast

resistant windows and door throughout.

Our new tenants will enjoy a bright cafeteria eating area with clouds. The new stage includes a visually pleasing proscenium and includes easier access with lower steps across the front and a ramp entrance from

the hallway. A sound system will add to the venue’s functionality.

Everyone will love the new student restrooms. They provide automatic faucets and electric hand dryers. The staff restrooms are also well equipped and convenient. We’ve provided pictures for an early tour. Enjoy the

new elementary cafeteria and special education building.

Note – Breakfast will remain in the Stacey Jr/Sr High School cafeteria for the next few weeks until a new walkway is open.

Thank you,

Will McDowell,

Executive Director for Operations and Technology

Did You Know? (www.recyclingfacts.org)

Eat a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Every now and then, replace a meat and potatoes meal with a traditional

peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The Environmental Defense Fund states that if every American traded one chicken-based meal every week for a

vegetarian option like PB&J, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as removing a half of a million cars from the roads in the United States.
