WELCOMEWelcome to the 2014/15 season at the Lace Market Theatre.Being asked to put together a season for our theatre is both a demanding challengeand an incredible honour. Finding the right mix of comedies, classics and contemporaryplays to suit our intimate theatre is a process which has taken a whole year to achievebut we are confident we've found something for everybody. Our season kicks off with the sharp and witty newsroom drama Damages from the penof award-winning writer Steve Thompson after which we continue to mark the centenaryof World War I with Somerset Maugham's poignant masterpiece For Services Rendered. The darkest of black comedies is presented in Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman whilstfans of John Godber have the chance to catch his bittersweet comedy Happy Jack. For those of you seeking an alternative to pantomime this year we present our seasonaltreat, Irving Berlin's White Christmas. Full of well loved songs, colourful costumes andguaranteed snow this popular classic will run for an extended period this December. We were delighted last year to be selected by the Royal Shakespeare Company toparticipate in their Open Stages programme which provides directors, actors andtechnical crew from a select number of amateur theatres the opportunity to work withindustry professionals in the development of a production of their choice. To coincidewith the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, you can witness the resultin our April production of Shakespeare's rarely performed King John. Continuing thetheme earlier in the season you can also see a younger Prince John in the acclaimedroyal family comedy The Lion in Winter made famous by the Oscar-winning film of thesame name.January sees an exciting first for The Lace Market Theatre with the performance of thewinning entry in our first ever new writing competition. A surreal comedy entitled OneAct Play, you can read all about it in my interview with writer Matt Fox on page 16.If you need to shake off the winter blues come February then Bedroom Farce by theever-popular Alan Ayckbourn may be just the ticket whilst Three Short Classics bringstogether the delights of Shaw, Strindberg and Chekhov in one evening of entertainment. We're extremely proud of the achievements of our award-winning Youth Theatre whothis March will present Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle. In the wake of General Election fever, look out for comic thriller Dead Ringer set in thePM's suite on the verge of a landslide victory, followed by Jumpy - a contemporarycomedy exploring mother-daughter relationships and midlife crises. Our season continues with Yerma, Lorca's tragic tale of longing formotherhood and concludes with the J.B. Priestley classic When WeAre Married. We strive to achieve the highest possible standards at The LaceMarket Theatre and I warmly welcome any suggestions or feedbackyou might have to [email protected] hope you enjoy our new season as much as we have enjoyedputting it together. Happy theatregoing!- Paul Johnson, Artistic Director

The Stronger by Strindberg and Overruledby G B Shaw are studies in aspects offidelity in marriage (or any committedrelationship whether acknowledged bylaw or not!)- a theme found frequently inworks spanning the turn of the 20thCentury and not without interest at theturn of the 21st Century. The Stronger: Written in 1889 and hassince then had frequent airings, beingadapted for an opera in 1952 andreceiving a new lease of life in translationsas recent as 2012. It is a dramaticmonologue on the face of it but oneaddressed to another character on stage

whose reactions are just as eloquent asspeech; so something of a challenge totwo actresses.Overruled: Shaw at his witty best. It waswritten in 1912 and, although short is aninteresting reflection on fidelity in studyingthe characters playing with, or thinkingthey are playing with, fire. Shaw's havesuffered from a fall in popularity recently, but this is an example of how his shorterplays can be a worthwhile challenge foractors in an intimate space.Swansong: After a performance in hishonour, a retiring actor finds himself in thedead of night in his deserted theatre. Hisonly companion is the elderly theatreprompter with whom he contemplates lifepast, present and future through the partsfor which he was once famous. This amateur production of The Stronger is presented byarrangement with Casarotto Ramsay & Associates Limited.

MEET MATT FOXLast year the Lace Market Theatre ran aNew Writing competition. Artistic DirectorPaul Johnson spoke to Matt Fox, the writerof the winning entry, One Act Play.Congratulations on winning our first evernew writing competition. One Act Play is areally exciting piece of theatre – can youtell us a bit about it?One Act Play is a comedy whichdeconstructs the very nature of theatreitself, whilst never taking the subjectseriously for a moment. It's written to besurreal, tragic, warm and funny, playfullyabusing theatrical theory and theconcept of dramatic intent, whilstcreating humanity in a bizarrely inhumanworld. The piece is concerned withcreating comedy out of the pomposity oftheatre, and unravelling many of theperceived boundaries that go with it.It’s an intriguing title – why did you chooseto call it simply One Act Play? That came from the fact that it's about thenature of theatre. I therefore thought atitle which is usually designed to describethe genre of play generally would workvery nicely as the title of this specificpiece. It's also designed to playfullyconfuse the audience as to what exactlythey are coming to watch. What inspired you to write the play?A pretentious director friend attended aone act play festival with me, and onseeing one of the pieces, started to go onabout whether the piece had "achievedits dramatic intent". This seemed to me tobe a very strange reaction, as largely Ithink a piece of theatre can either bejudged as engaging or not; if whateverhappened was interesting, entertainingand/or emotionally affecting then thepiece has worked, whatever the intentmay have been.

How long have you been writing?I'm thirty and started writing when I was ateenager, growing up in Cornwall. I joineda writer's group at Plymouth Theatre Royaland following a degree in English did anMA in Professional Writing. Since then I'vewritten, plays, musicals, operas andvarious other theatrical pieces.Has any of your other work beenperformed before?Yes, both by my own theatre companyMadam Renards and by other companiesaround the country. In 2012 I wrote apiece called Swindon: The Opera, whichwas funded by the national lottery andreceived national media attention. Mylatest play To Sleep ran in the West End in2013 and has been touring the UK.What are you working on at the moment?I have just completed a new full lengthplay call Family Play which is a 4-handerwhich looks at an unconventional familyunit through the eyes of an eight year oldgirl. The piece has been given anunreliable narrator, so the audience isnever quite sure what is "real" and what isnot during the piece. I'm also currentlywriting a musical piece, loosely based onsome of Edgar Allen Poe's stories, whichI'm working on with my composer wife,Jessie Thompson. How do you feel about seeing One ActPlay performed for the first time inNottingham?I'm thrilled One Act Play is beingperformed in Nottingham. The city is amajor player in the northern culturallandscape and I've known various peoplewho've been involved in productions atthe Nottingham Playhouse and othervenues. A lot of the UK's great writers havehad links with Nottingham, so it's nice tofollow in the footsteps of people like Byron,Alan Sillitoe and D.H. Lawrence.
