The behr range for the extraction process
Extraction processes (more precisely: solid-liquid extraction process) are used to separate soluble components from a solid sample.
Examples:n Determining the fat content in foods
n Determining an impurity(e.g. PCB, abandoned armaments) in soil samples
n Examining the components of natural substances.
Even brewing coffee is an extraction process. However, in the laboratory the focus is on completely dissolving the examined components from the sample under defined condi-tions and in a not unnecessarily diluted form. In the laboratory, solvents such as ligroin or hexane are used as extraction agents.
The objective of all extraction processes is to dissolve as much of the soluble com-ponents as possible with a specific amount of solvent. This is achieved by constantly vaporising the solvent and allowing it to drip into the sample from a reflux condenser. In contrast to a coffee machine, the same solvent is constantly sent back to the sample. The extracted component accumulates in the distillation flask.
Classic extraction: SoxhletThe standard extraction method is the Soxhlet method. behr apparatus for Soxhlet extractions fulfil all the various requirements in everyday laboratory practice.
n Practical brackets for condensers and intermediate extraction pieces for safestorage between extractions
n Extractor sizes from 30 ml to 1000 ml
n Compact apparatus with one sample position
n Series extraction devices with 4 or 6 sample positions
n Extractors with specially developed siphon tubes (make: "Bröckerhoff") guaranteeconsistent results across all sample positions.
n Extractors with taps remove the need for additional distillation after the extraction
n Condensers with screw connections improve work safety
n The hydrolysis units (1, 4 or 6 sample positions) also enable acid digestion prior toextraction (determination of the total fat content according to Weibull and Stoldt).
54
Hot extraction according to RandallThe hot extraction process according to Randall consists of three steps:
n Boiling
n Rinsing
n and evaporation.
BoilingIn the first step, the extraction thimble with the sample is located in the vessel with the boiling extraction agent - similar to a tea bag in a cup of hot water. Most of the sub-stance to be extracted should dissolve in this step and is distributed in the solvent. The top part of the apparatus simply acts as a reflux condenser; the condensate drips into the extraction thimble and helps to dissolve the substance.
RinsingIn the second step, the extraction thimble is lifted out of the pool. Extract may still adhere to the thimble; and some of the substance that has not yet dissolved may still be located in the sample. The condensate from the condenser flushes the remaining extract and progressively dissolves the previously undissolved portion. If the dissolved extract is to be subjected to further processing, the extraction is now complete. Otherwise, the solvent is removed in the third step.
EvaporationConnect the recirculating tap to the condenser for evaporation. The condensate collects in the lower part of the condenser; it can be reused for the next extraction. Thanks to the the short path to the apparatus, the sample can be evaporated until it is almost dry. Benefits of the hot extraction process include
n A compact apparatus with short process paths,
n Low solvent requirement,
n Short extraction period - typically about an hour.
Due to the short extraction period, hot extraction is also gentle on the extract. There are now also an increasing number of analysis processes that use hot extraction.
Hot extraction according to TwisselmannIn the Twisselmann process, the vessel in which the extraction thimble is placed is open at the bottom; the extract immediately flows back into the distillation flask. The extrac-tion thimble is constantly rinsed by the solvent from above and hot steam circulates from below.

Soxhlet extractionClassic fat determination with Soxhlet extraction after hydrolysis
Hydrolysis principleThis acid digestion process dissolves both "free fats" as well as "bound fats" from the overall fat content.
The fat is frequently naturally enclosed in the cell matrix of the food or fodder or chemically bound. In these cases, a hydrolysis step before extraction completely releases the fat.
The user filters the hydrolysate of the separated sample by using a glass sample tube filled with sand or Celite.
The user then rinses the fatty filter residue with water in order to remove the acid.
After drying, the filter residue is finally extracted.

Twisselmann
The extraction according to Twisselmann is a continuous hot extraction. It functions in a similar manner to the Soxhlet extraction. However, the temperature in the sample in the Twisselmann extractor is extremely hot, i.e. close to the solvent's boiling point. This im-proves solubility and shortens the extraction time.
The higher extraction temperature results from the condensed solvent flowing through the extraction thimble from above mixing with the rising, hot solvent vapour from below. The temperature of the mixture is much higher than that of the condensed solvent.
The Twisselmann extraction reduces the extraction time by up to 50% compared to the Soxhlet extraction.

behr Kjeldahl block digestion systems with fully automatic liftbehr’s L series Kjeldahl block digestion systems are equipped with a fully automatic lift. This enables the user to avoid handling the heavy samples unit and the hot chemi-cals. The software not only controls the sample lift but also the behrosog 3 and therefore enables largely automatic digestion.
At the end of the digestion the lift moves the complete unit upwards, including the rack and extraction hood. Following a freely programmable cooling/ extraction time, it raises the extraction hood and moves it into the end position.
n Temperature profiles and the starting time of the digestion are freely programmable.

Digestion unitsThe digestion units of the behrotest® InKjel series are equipped with efficient infrared heating. The quality and positioning of the behr infrared heaters guarantees the user identical heating phases and digestion temperatures on all sample slots. This also ap-plies to double-rowed arrangement in insert racks for 12 samples. The digestion tubes hang in the rack and do not touch the bottom of the digester. As a result, the digestion vessels are at less risk of breakage than in an aluminium heating block.
n Direct sample heating by the infrared heaters prevents the agonisingly longheating times of conventional heating block systems.
n You can reach a radiation temperature of 830 °C within one minute and heat up thesamples in 10 minutes to their boiling temperature of 410°C.
nHigh-quality quartz heaters instead of the usual steel tubular heating elements en-sure particularly uniform heating of all sample slots.
nbehr single-knob control for particularly easy and fast programming.
n Menu navigation in national language.
The behrotest® InKjel is therefore the ideal digestion system for the determination of nitrogen using the Kjeldahl method and other high-temperature digestion tests. With the Kjeldahl digestion method, the temperature is set by the boiling temperature of the sulphuric acid.

Rapid Infrared Digestion Systems with Temperature Control
behr InKjel TC rapid infrared devices with temperature control combine the advantages of infrared digestion and block digestion in one unit: Their fast infrared digestion at controlled temperatures enables an extremely high sample throughput.
With the programmable models of the InKjel TCP line the analyst has the choice from 25 individually configurable programs for temperature and digestion time.
You can reach a radiation temperature of 830 °C within one minute and heat up the samples in 10 minutes to their boiling temperature of 410°C. High-quality quartz heaters instead of the usual steel tubular heating elements ensure particularly uniform heating of all sample slots.

ScrubberThe two-stage behrosog process extraction system (scrubber) – pre-separator plus safety stage – prevents any acid fumes whatsoever from reaching the environment. Compact process extraction system for extracting and neutralising aggressive acid fumes, especially from the Kjeldahl digestion method for nitrogen determination. An upstream two-stage pre-separator washes out the toxic substances. The process extraction system is equipped with a vacuum pump 40 l/min. There is no need to connect to the water supply.
n Efficient running costs
n Continuously variable intake flow
nBoth cleaning stages (condensation and neutralisation stage) prevent the emissionof toxic substances into the environment
Optionally, the additional cooling system for the behrosog 3 ACS can be connected to the system, consisting of stand, bottles and cooler.

Exemplary safety for the steam distillationbehr steam distillers are not only efficient and reliable partners in everyday laboratory life. An important issue during the development and design of the equipment was also the safety of users.
Therefore, all steam distillers have:n a protection switch as master switch, which automatically trips in the event
of overload and short-circuit
n a mechanical overpressure safety valve to prevent excessive pressure in thesteam generator
n vessel monitoring (distillation is not possible until a vessel has been inserted)
n a door contact switch, which automatically switches off the distiller if the dooris open
n a resettable excess temperature thermostat (in the event of lack of water in thesteam generator)
n cooling circuit monitoring by means of pressure switches
n temperature-controlled steam heating phase and pressure control via solenoid valve
Steam distillersbehr S series steam distillers are the optimum addition to the behr Kjeldahl digestion system. Depending on the requirements, the user can choose between five automatic steam distillers. These have identical basic designs, however, their ease of use and degree of automation differ. The top of the range unit, the behr S 5, is prepared for work with an external titrator.
The Windows software supplied enables the user to bidirectionally transfer application-specific distillation parameters between one or several units and a PC via the USB inter-face. The CD includes a library with common applications.

Manual titration station STIThe STI manual titration station consists of:n a burette with digital display andn a magnetic stirrer with precise fitting holder for an Erlenmeyer flask
A screen serves as a neutral background and enables the user to precisely determine the colour alteration at the end of the titration. This means that the titrations are always performed under similar optical conditions. This improves the accuracy and reproducibility of the results.
The precise positioning of the vessel in the holder at the top of the magnetic stirrer also contributes towards this. The angular sides of the screen provide additional protection against lateral glare.
