Introduction

Packed columns are readily used within chemical processes and industry in order to

separate materials from various states of matter[2],[4]

. For example, packed columns can be used

to remove impurities from a gas stream, or remove volatile components within a liquid phase via

contact with an inert gas[2],[5]

. The processes described above, known as absorption and stripping

respectively, are just two of many applications in which packed columns are used[4],[5]

. The

contact between gases and liquids within a packed column is continuous, and usually involves

counter-current flow between the gas and liquid. Furthermore, the column is commonly packed

with a certain material that increases the surface area for mass transfer and also affect pressure

drop. In part two of this two-part research endeavour, a gas flow rate was introduced into the

packed column along with a water flow rate. The flow rate of the gas was adjusted via variation

of blower speeds, whereas the liquid flow rate was altered by slowly opening the recycle valve.

Data collection occurred continuously through a computer program called LabView. The main

objective of part two of this experiment was to investigate the pressure drop across the packed

column caused by the modifications to gas and liquid flow rates. Observed trends between mass

flow rate of air and pressure drop per unit length were noted for each specific liquid flow rate.

Furthermore, the flooding velocities of three water flow rates were realized. It was graphically

determined that at a constant liquid flow rate, pressure drop per unit length increases with gas

velocity. Furthermore, at a constant gas velocity, it was found that the pressure drop per unit

length increases with rising liquid flow rate. Also, it was found that the average flooding

velocities were 2.646 m/s, 2.73 m/s and 2.69 m/s for the fully closed recycle valve, first quarter

turn and second quarter turn conditions, respectively.

Theory

In general, packed columns are used for various separation processes such as stripping,

distillation and absorption[2],[5]

. These packed columns allow for packing to be used to maximize

the surface area of contact between a liquid and a gas, or a solid and a gas. Furthermore, it is

possible to have a solid and a liquid in contact with each other. Typically, a cylindrical shaped

column is used along with a packing material. The columns are filled with a certain type of

packing material, where a liquid is then used to uniformly wet the surface of the packing whilst a

gaseous element passes through the wetted surface from the bottom of the column, allowing

mass transfer to occur via counter-current flow[2],[5]

. Due to the various types of packing

available, it is up to the operator’s discretion to choose which type would be best to minimize

pressure drop across the column, and also increase mass transfer. The packing types have

different surface areas and configurations that affect column void space and degree of packing.

However, as a fluid flows through a packed column, it evidently experiences a pressure loss due

to frictional forces.

The pressure drop can be realized using the overall mechanical energy equation:

Equation 1 illustrated above can be derived from the mechanical energy balance. The equation

relates the steady flow of an incompressible fluid undergoing no changes in phase or very small

changes in temperature, to variables such as velocity, elevation, pressure and frictional losses.

It is important to note that the liquid and gas flow counter-currently through the packed

column. An increase of gas velocity causes a rise in the resistance encountered by the flowing

fluid. This results in a higher pressure drop within the packed column. Subsequently, an overly

excessive gas velocity results in a problem denoted as flooding. Flooding occurs when the liquid

within the column encounters too much resistance by the gas, and is not able to flow down the

column[5]

. Because the fluid cannot properly flow and exit the column, the packing material

becomes overly wet and the void volume of the packed column decreases since water is unable

to leave. As a result, a dangerous spike in pressure leads to various safety concerns and damage

to the operational system. Thus, it is imperatively important to control gas velocity in relation to

the flooding velocity when designing a packed column[5]

.

Experimental Procedure:

1. Recorded all the sizes and schedules of the pipes used in the apparatus

2. Recorded the quantity and specific type of fitting (elbow, tee etc.)

3. Recorded specifications of pump

4. Turned on the computer and logged into the students account

5. Opened LabVIEW program titled “New Packed Bed Experiment”

6. Closed the recycled valve and opened all other valves on the system

7. Turned on the pump

8. Changed blower stetting to “0”

9. Turned on blower

10. Allowed system to reach steady state (approximately 1 minute)

11. Clicked “run” on LabVIEW program

12. Allowed the system to run for four minutes

13. Stopped the program and saved the data to an excel file

14. Turned off Blower

15. Repeated steps 7-14 this time for blower speeds of 15, 45 and 75

16. Repeated steps 8-15 for 3 additional quarter turns

17. Turned off pump and computer

utilized to collect all of the raw data which is presented in the appendices.

A plot of the logarithm of the mass flow rate of air with respect to the logarithm of the pressure

drop per unit length of column for each specific water flow rate was able to be realized. As

shown in Figure 1, there is a clear relationship between the gas mass flow rate and the

subsequent pressure drop of the fluid. The flow rate is very evidently directly proportional to the

pressure drop. Therefore, as the mass flow increases, the pressure drop increases as well.

Similarly, as the mass flow rate decreases, the pressure drop decreases. Another way to describe

this relationship is by considering how the blower configuration affects the pressure drop. Table

1, reveals that when the blower is at maximum, which in this case is at the 45 degree

configuration, the pressure drop is minimized. This relationship holds for all the recycle stream

flow rates. This occurs because the air flows in opposite direction to the water which allows this

relationship to occur.

The flooding velocities for the three water flow rates chosen were able to be calculated via

analysis of experimental data. The raw data is again collected and used to calculate the flooding

velocities of all three recycle stream arrangements. These values are tabulated in Table 2, as

shown above. The average flooding velocities were 2.646 m/s, 2.73 m/s and 2.69 m/s for the

fully closed recycle valve, first quarter turn and second quarter turn conditions, respectively.

Discussion

As shown, the flooding velocity remains fairly the same respectively for the various

recycle stream flow rates. The various blower settings do affect the flooding velocities which is

the accepted outcome, because as the blower degrees increase, many times the flowing velocity

decreases. The various data outliers and their reasoning will be discussed in the error analysis

section. For chemical and physical separations, the increasing of surface area is absolutely

necessary to increase the rate of the separation, while also providing a decreased microscopic

special variation in the tower. Various types of packing induces their respective void fractions

and packing factors, which take into parameters such bulk density, total volume, and packing

volume. The two main types of packing are, random packing, and structured packing [1]

. The

mass transfer coefficient in structured packing is higher than random packing due to the

increased contact area between the fluids [1]

. Due to the structured packing being high efficiency,

they cost more than the random packing. For similar reasons care needs to be taken when

handling the structured packing, as a change to their shape will dramatically have an effect on

the efficiency of the packing. Various packing materials can also be used. These materials

include ceramic, metal, plastic and many more. The materials used are based on their individual

properties. For example, ceramic materials can absorb a high amount of heat. Hence applications

with immense temperatures, such as gas absorption, ceramic would be preferred. Metal is useful

because it is a great thermal conductor. Plastic is always cheap compared to the other two, and

provides some malleability as well. A specific packing material is used with various applications,

keeping in mind the positives and negatives of each one. Table 3 on the next page illustrates,

from literature, all types of packing and their characteristics along with their applications in

industrial processes.

Error Analysis

This error analysis section will describe errors that occurred within the lab that would

have cause inaccuracies in the results. The values calculated in this lab are flooding velocity and

pressure drop. Throughout the experiment there were many sources of error that would have

negatively affected the accuracy of the experiment results. One of the main errors stemmed from

the steady state assumption. It was assumed that the system was at steady state when the

computer program was started. However, it can not be confirmed with absolute certainty that this

was the case throughout the entirety of the experiment. The equations used in this report are only

for steady state, and therefore if the system was not in steady state the equations would not be

valid. The second main error occurred when reading the generalized pressure drop chart. It was

extremely difficult to the read values off of the chart. If values were taken incorrectly it would

have an overall negative effect when calculating the flooding velocity, causing deviation from

the true value. Other errors include; due to the age of the equipment and due to the fact that it

had been used extensively for years, the piping might not have been actually smooth from the

inside. The constant flow of high pressure water would have caused roughness within the walls

of the pipe, and this would subsequently affect the flow rate and therefore the pressure drop

calculations.

Conclusions and Recommendations

This experiment successfully outlined the effects of several air flow rates along with

water flow rates within a packed column. More specifically, the pressure drop across the packed

column was able to be graphically visualized by interpreting the experimental data gathered via

the computer program LabVIEW. A plot of the logarithm of the mass flow rate of air versus the

logarithm of the pressure drop per unit length of column was elucidated for each specific water

flow rate. Through graphical analysis, a relationship was able to be correlated between the flow

rate of liquid and air in the packed column. In particular, a constant liquid flow rate, pressure

drop per unit length increases with gas velocity. Furthermore, at a constant gas velocity, it was

found that the pressure drop per unit length increases with rising liquid flow rate. Also, it was

found that the average flooding velocities were 2.646 m/s, 2.73 m/s and 2.69 m/s for the fully

closed recycle valve, first quarter turn and second quarter turn conditions, respectively. There are

a few important recommendations that can be offered in order to improve future experiments. To

begin, it was noted that the packing within the column remained the same throughout the

experiment. It may improve experimental results if different types of packing and packing sizes

were used in subsequent experiments. For instance, a study elucidated the effect of different

packing sizes and shapes in a packed column, and following this type of methodology in future

experiments may be more beneficial for the learning experience of the students[6]

. Next, the

recycle valve was opened very slowly using quarter turns, however it was difficult to truly gauge

the number of turns since there were no markings on the valve itself. Thus, it may benefit future

experiments to use a different control valve with measured flow rates in order to gather more

accurate results for the liquid flow rates. This would allow researchers to obtain a better grasp on

the effects of increasing liquid flow rate in a packed column with counter-current air flow.
