Accreditation.A process of peer review that the educational community hasadopted for self-regulationsince early in the 20th century. It is a voluntary process

intended to strengthen and sustain the quality and integrity of highereducation, making it worthy of public confidence. Institutions choose to applyfor accredited status, and once accredited, they agree to abide by the standardsof their accrediting organization and to regulate themselves by takingresponsibility for their own improvement

Governing Boards:Understanding the Expectations of theMSCHE (2010)

Governing Body. The highest governing authority withinthe organizational and governance structures of the

institution. It is the body ultimately accountable for theacademic quality, fiscal and academic integrity, academicplanning, assets, and financial health of the institution.

rtoRico La Acreditacin y Licencia institucionales son co requisitos, entre otros, para:

Que los cursos y grados conferidos por la UPR sean reconocidos en los EEUU yen otros pases

Que los programas acadmicos susceptibles sean elegibles para la acreditacinprofesional (e.g., Medicina y todas las profesiones de la salud, Ingeniera, Arquitectura,

Trabajo Social, Educacin, Administracin de Empresas, etc.), y que los serviciosuniversitarios especializados sean elegibles para la acreditacin especializada(Biblioteca, Orientacin y Consejera, Museos, Centros de Desarrollo Preescolar, etc.).

57% de los programas acadmicos de la UPR son susceptibles de acreditacin

profesional. De estos, sobre el 50% ya tiene la acreditacin y se proyecta que elremanente obtenga esta credencial no ms tarde del 2016.

Que la institucin sea elegible para recibir fondos Ttulo IV, que incluyen la BecaPELL, programas de prstamos estudiantiles, y otras ayudas estudiantiles

suplementarias.

econmica de la operacin institucional y programtica a travs de un estudio de viabilidad con

proyecciones de ingresos y gastos indicando la fuente y los conceptos.Seccin 51.3 (j): la institucin deber, adems demostrar, en contexto con la modalidad que

aplique, quetiene establecida unapoltica que garantiza que los estudiantes puedanterminar su grado en el caso de que coloque en moratoria o se cierre el programa de estudio oque la institucin cese sus operaciones.

Standard 3, Resources, that requires the availability and accessibility ofthe necessary resourcesto achieve the institutions mission and goals.

Standard 4, Leadership and Governance, that requires a system ofgovernance that clearly defines the roles of institutional constituencies inpolicy development and decision making, with sufficient autonomy toassure institutional integrity and to fulfil l its responsibilities of policy and

resource development, consistent with the mission of the institution.

The Commission places an institution on Probationwhen the institution is not in

compliance with one or more Commission standards and that the non-compliance issufficiently serious, extensive, or acute that it raises concern about one or more of thefollowing:the adequacy of the education provided by the institutionthe institutions capacity to make appropriate improvements in a timely fashionthe institutions capacity to sustain itself in the long term

Probation may, but need not always, precede an action ofShow CauseA Show Cause action is a request for an institution to inform the Commission why the

institutions accreditation should not be removed. For Show Cause, the Commissionmay require a substantive report and/or an on-site evaluation.
