Neighborhood Schools
La Feria Independent School District administration has been researching the design of the reconfiguration of elementary schools in the district. An information item was presented to the Board of Trustees on October 6, 2014. The design being evaluated is to construct three elementary schools with the grade span being prekindergarten through 4th grade. This change would not affect Noemi Dominguez Elementary, W. B. Green Jr. High, or La Feria High School.
Information has been reviewed and discussed with campus administration. Individual campus meetings with teachers were held at Sam Houston Elementary, David G. Sanchez Elementary, and C. E. Vail Elementary during the week of October 14. Two evening community information sessions will be held to provide an opportunity for parents and community members to receive information on the concept of Neighborhood Schools. The first evening session was held on October 27, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the La Feria High School library. The second community information sessions will be held on November 4, 2014, at 5:30 p.m., at Lee Facility. All parents and community members are invited to attend these information sessions.
A change in the grade configuration of our schools would positively impact our students and would set the stage for substantial achievement. With our current configuration, students often have a significant achievement loss during each transitional year. Students who make few transitions need fewer years to make up for achievement losses caused by transitions. Instead of students attending three different schools before the 5th grade, they would attend one. Teachers would also have common planning and curriculum vertical alignment leading to student success, eventually impacting state and federal accountability systems. Due to increase in rigor level in instruction, common planning times, vertical alignment, and consistency across the curriculum are of utmost importance for student learning and success.
