The original concept of this magazine came from students in Oen Hammond’s Design Communications II class, and was implemented by students in the Student Life publications program.

Q. What are the minimum requirements for consideration for financial aid money?

Q. What is Blackboard, and how does it work?

A. To qualify, students need to demonstrate need, except with certain loan programs, and have a high school diploma or equivalent, and they must enroll at ACC and be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Students receiving aid cannot get it from two schools in the same semester.

A. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at fafsa.ed.gov. Complete the ACC Financial Aid Institutional Application available at the campus Financial Aid Office or on the financial aid Web site, and submit a high school transcript or GED certificate to the Admissions and Records Office. Some students might be required to fill out additional verification paperwork.

Q. What forms do I need to fill out for financial aid?

A. After all the paperwork is submitted to the Financial Aid Office it will take about four to six weeks. There are priority deadlines for financial aid applications to give ample time to students to have their forms processed. Students can apply after priority deadlines, but awards are made on a first come first served basis, so it’s advisable to get started early.

Q. How long will it take to get my money?

A. To receive a Work-Study job, a student must have applied for financial aid within deadlines and be eligible for the award based on the federal need analysis, and be enrolled in at least six semester hours. There is a Work-Study orientation that students have to take to participate in the program. Work-Study pay starts at $8.45 per hour.

Q. I’m interested in the Work-Study program, how do I get involved?

Q. What is my eID?

A.It’s the first letter of your official first name followed by your seven digit student ID number. Your ID number is on your ACC ID card, but you can also click on the “What’s my ACC eID” link on the Web site to find out your login information. As with all Web site problems, you can contact the helpdesk (223.4357) during business hours for assistance.

A. Blackboard is an online course management system. On blackboard you can view grades and read assignments and notices from professors. Some professors have students take exams on Blackboard. Some exams can only be taken on an ACC testing center computer. A complete list of the ACC Testing Center locations and hours is available online. You must have an activated ACC eID to use the site. Problems logging into Blackboard can usually be resolved by calling the ACC helpdesk at 223.4357.Resources:

Most students’ first connection with Student Life happens before they ever take a class.

Orientation is hosted by Student Life to help incoming students learn about the campus they will be attending as well as helpful information about the college like who to talk to about things such as financial aid, parking, or registration. The information is presented with interactive games to make the two- hour presentation more fun and easier to remember. There is a lot more technology involved for this year’s Orientation. Students will now be able to use a clicker, a hand held device that allows them to respond to questions by the Orientation Leaders. This year there are ten new Orientation Leaders with new training to keep the program more enjoyable and the sign-in is done using student ID cards you swipe, making it easier to enter. You may sign up for Orientation when registering for classes, and for those interested in becoming more involved, there is a paid internship available through Student Life.

The Campus Activities program hosts events like Project: Build a Park, Welcomepalooza, and

Springtini. CAB (Campus Activities Funding Board) allocates funds out to students that request them for events or activities. The funding board is both run and funded by students. Before a request is approved, a board of seven students look over the application and make a consensus over what they are going to fund. Students involved with CAB learn to manage a budget and distribute funds. If interested, students may apply to join CAB at the Northridge SL Office with an essay and an interview. Once part of CAB, students have the opportunity to learn leadership skills, compromising and consensus skills, and can attend a leadership conference in the fall for a week where they mix and mingle with other college students from all over the USA.

Clubs and Organizations helps students make connections on cultural or academic levels. This

program helps students increase their involvement with the college and with each other, while helping bolster their transcript or resume. Involvement in Clubs and Organizations also allows students to gain field experience when they work with a group that connects with their degree plan. For a list of available clubs and organizations visit the Student Life Web site. If you find there isn’t a club or organization that you like, you can start your own by stopping by any SL office. Starting a new club only requires at least three people and must include a president, secretary, and a treasurer. In addition, a faculty or staff advisor must be involved. Other requirements include participation. Clubs must host at least one event per year and organizations must host one event per semester.

For the politically minded student, getting connected with Campus Governance is a way

to help represent the student body’s point of view and act as a voice to ACC’s Shared Governance system. Campus Governance is divided into the Student Government Association (SGA), the Shared Governance Committee, and Student Activity Fee Advisory Committees (SAFAC). Students can participate in SGA by running for office, voting in student elections, attending meetings, or by contacting their campus senators about concerns. Every campus has at least two senators, and other senators are appointed for other areas like the Distance Learning or the Non-Traditional Student senators. Students can visit the SGA Web site to locate contact information for each member and bring to the senator’s attention anything that they would like the administration to consider.

While there may not be an “I” in team, playing sports and engaging in group recreation

is a great way to build personal development. The Intramural Sports and Recreation program provides participants with the opportunity to have fun, make new friends, and experience friendly competition. Kinesiology and Personal Fitness Trainer majors in particular will benefit from the program, but all students have something to gain from the self-motivation skills fostered through team work. For the ‘09-’10 school year, the Intramural Sports and Recreation program will be organizing women’s volleyball and men’s basketball tournaments, as well as Blazer Tag outings, golf lessons, and bowling. Registration for Intramural Sports and Recreation for the fall takes place from Aug. 3 through Sept. 11. Students interested in participating can stop by their Student Life Office, visit with Student Life Coordinator Jennifer Flowers at Welcomepalooza events, or register online.

Austin is a cultural melting pot, and here at ACC our main mixer is the Diversity

Outreach program. By teaching students about differences, Diversity Outreach also spotlights the ways in which we are all the same. Starting in the fall, the new Diversity Ambassador program will host two student created Common Experience presentations, skits and dialogues aimed at provoking thought and discussion. This year’s Diversity and Leadership Conference is targeting the dual causes of world hunger and human trafficking.

Diversity exists internationally, domestically, and in our own lives. Which is why Hasani Pettiford, known as the “Date Doctor,” will be presenting a fall series of monthly videos and blog discussions on the Student Life Web Site, helping students deal with their dating problems, before appearing in person at ACC just before Valentine’s Day to host a talk show on dating issues. Our nation’s diversity has long been a cornerstone of our success, so don’t be afraid to reach out to Diversity Outreach while you’re at ACC.

leadership

The Leadership program at ACC has grown tremendously in the last few semesters. It gets

students involved in monthly seminars that teach different avenues for choosing life and educational goals. Speakers routinely present seminars to tell their stories of success and give tips on overcoming adversity. Participation in the Leadership program also helps students develop skills that transfer into the job market and add to their co-curricular profile which helps strengthen transcripts. So far 140 members have been inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi, the society for leadership and success. To be a member, it is required to attend three Success Networking Teams (SNT), three seminars, one Leadership training, and one community service event (such as Project: Build a Park or American Youth Works) for at least five hours. A SNT is five to ten students meeting to talk about their plans for life and higher education. The other students listen and the group responds with suggestions to help plan the execution of these goals. This year three students in the Leadership program have won scholarships, and at the end of the year students can apply for scholarships in larger denominations up to $3500.

The Student Assistance program helps students that encounter emergency situations that may get in

the way of succeeding at ACC. The program assists students with childcare, textbook support, and in special cases, rent. For students with these extreme life situations, Student Assistance helps them on a case by case basis. An application is available at any SL office. The criteria to receive help in child care and textbook payment assistance include being enrolled in at least six credit hours in a degree or certificate program and being eligible for Pell grant funding. To receive help for rent, students have to qualify for the Emergency Financial Assistance determination. Students qualify by being enrolled in at least six credit hours, have an unanticipated expense, not use these funds for tuition and fees, remain enrolled and complete the current semester. Assistance is generally limited to no more than $1,000.

There are many opportunities for students to work with the Student Life communications

department at ACC. Student Media has paid and non-paid positions available for students interested in photography, Web and print design, marketing, and writing.

While working for a student publication, like the award winning Accent newspaper, students are given the opportunity to have their work put in print, build their portfolios, and gain real world skills in media fields.

Students can participate in out of town trips for writing, photography, and design competitions and attend professional seminars on everything from media ethics to Web design.

For students who prefer working with the magazine format or just want some publications experience, Life4U magazine is an award winning student publication that will help bolster a portfolio and resume. Students can get involved by stopping by the office at Rio Grande campus in the back of the Student Life Office.

Even without the tourist-targeting slogan “Live Music Capital of the World,” it’s clear that Austin is a good place to hear live music. Acclaimed touring acts play on Red River all week, and Blues rock cover bands can be heard from

outside half the venues on Sixth Street. It’s all part of a vibrant music scene that consistently hoists local musicians into the national spotlight. Just don’t let all the attention live music gets distract you from the other types of entertainment Austin has to offer. Students can wine and dine in nationally acclaimed restaurants (or locally acclaimed dives), bust a gut at local comedy joints, hike and bike the nature trails or catch a film at our one-of-a-kind local cinema. There’s no better city for entertainment than Austin.

It would be impossible to be a movie fan in Austin and avoid the Alamo Drafthouse. The beloved local theater chain features full food service, and in addition to showing reasonably priced new releases, hosts an astounding array of events ranging from cult classic screenings to music video sing-a-longs.

If you miss out on an obscure must see film at the Alamo, don’t fret, there is a pretty good chance you’ll be able to find a copy at one of Austin’s all-inclusive rental outlets. Both I Luv Video and Vulcan have extensive selections and knowledgeable staff, making them several steps ahead of the high school students working at Blockbuster who don’t know their Godfather from their Forrest Gump.

Of course, movie theaters are also a great way to relax, cool down, and beat the heat, so it’s nice that both the Paramount and Central Park offer summer film series. Over the summer Paramount showcases weekly double features of classics, both new and old, while Central Park provides a nice outdoor area to relax with the family and enjoy some kid friendly fare.

Though Austin’s horrendous summer heat waves often keep everyone as close to air conditioning as possible, there is plenty to do, see, and swim in around town. When it comes to keeping cool, nothing beats a lazy day spent lying in the shade by the always ice cold Barton Springs. Anyone who balks at Barton’s $3 entrance fee should be satisfied by the free swimming holes found in the Greenbelt, as well as the miles of scenic trails. And for those with an inclination toward inclines, Mount Bonnell is an equally hikable walk in the woods, complete with a gorgeous view of Austin’s skyline. Hikers might get lucky and spot a squirrel or two, but if you are looking for interesting animals, the best bet is the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary, home to more than 100 different species of rescued animals. Despite suffering from that thermometer busting Texas heat, Austin is anything but dry, and both Lake Travis and Lady Bird Lake are beautiful, boatable destinations for folks trying to get out on the water without having to get their feet wet.

When it comes to eats, Austin has plenty of options suited to a student’s budget (meaning cheap.) Texas is renowned for it’s barbecue, but Austin has also has plenty of vegetarian dining, so if you need non-carnivorous cuisine, consider yourself covered. Veggie Heaven, Bouldin Creek, and both Mr. Naturals are all safe havens for health food types and vegetarians alike, serving up nutritious, meatless dishes at more than affordable prices. Those seeking more traditional fare will be happy to know that both Kerbey Lane and

Magnolia Cafe sling high-quality, low price, greasy spoon diner food 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Three a.m pancakes and a bottomless cup of coffee make great companions during an all night study session.

Of course, there are also those days when the financial aid check comes in (or your parents visit from out of town) and you feel like hitting something a little bit more upscale. Uchi, a modern Japanese and sushi restaurant on South Lamar will certainly satisfy your raw fish cravings, and is a step above the bento box size sushi spots on West Campus. Not into sushi, but still have the urge to dine fine? Vespaio on South Congress has high end Italian

food that should delight the taste buds of anyone who can afford the stiff prices. For most college students though, eating out means eating cheap which is why pizza and subs make

up half their daily caloric intake. Anyone craving a hot slice or hoagie is advised to head to Guadalupe’s main Drag, where you’ll find almost as many

pizza/sub shops as UT students wearing burnt orange.

When it comes to keeping Austin Weird, no one does it better than the folks living out on the fringe of Austin’s art scene. Located just off of MLK on Austin’s east side, the lived in Museum Of Natural And Artificial Ephemera hosts a rotating collection of curious odds and ends with semi-regular events.

Similar in eccentric devotion to the obscure and unwanted is the Cathedral of Junk, a South Austinite’s three story monument to the wonders of refuse, which is viewable by appointment. Back on the beaten path, both the Blanton and Harry Ransom Center are UT sponsored treasure troves of high art (the former) and artifacts (the latter.)

Lastly, for those who like their culture less static, and more on stage, Austin has a wonderful theater scene with diverse productions appearing regularly at Hyde Park and Salvage Vanguard, as well as kid oriented matinee shows over at the Scottish Rite. Children’s Theater.

The Paramount regularly hosts big name comedians and the occasional Comedy Central filming, but the ticket prices can run up to 80 dollars or more. That’s asking a lot of a cash-strapped student, so if you’re looking for a cheap laugh it’s probably best to stay local. Esther’s Follies has weekly shows that include everything from magic to sketch comedy to musical routines. Next door to Esther’s is the Velveeta Room, and your Esther’s Follies ticket gets you in for free, so there is no reason the comedy has to stop when the curtains close. If you like your comedy to be more on the spot, it doesn’t get any more spontaneous than Austin’s incredible improv scene. Tickets are typically ten bucks or less, and shows can be seen Thursday through Saturday at both the Hideout Theatre downtown and the Coldtowne Theater on Airport Blvd. If you like what you see and are interested in getting out of the audience and onto the stage, both theaters offer improv and comedy classes catering to any skill level or prior experience.

Located in Cedar Park, the Cypress Creek campus serves a wide range of students from the northwest quadrant of the Greater Austin area. Students attending this campus have the opportunity to study many programs including Health Sciences, Criminal Justice, Real Estate, and a wide variety of science classes. Students interested in science fields will find numerous classes and resources available at Cypress Creek, such as Chemistry and Microbiology labs. The campus is also home to ACC’s Real Estate program, where students can study real estate laws and obtain licenses to become agents. Students at Cypress Creek have the chance to also participate in an annual art show and community blood drives facilitated by the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas throughout the school year. In addition to serving student needs, the campus serves the needs of Cedar Park and Leander as a community center. The Cedar Park and Greater Leander Chambers of Commerce hold expos and job fairs at the campus to increase the opportunities available to both students and residents of the area.

If you’re looking for a glimpse of the future on the east side of Austin, look no further than Eastview Campus. Best known as the home campus for students training in nursing and EMT certification, it is located on Webberville and Govalle Road. It is the only ACC campus that has two buildings that are across the street from each other with a skyway connecting them. Eastview is well known for its Health Science programs, fostering careers in Radiology, Dentistry, Pharmacology, and Phlebotomy as part of the Medical Lab Technology prgram. Dental students have the advantage of an on staff dentist. When students are doing their internship they can see actual patients as part of the process depending on the time of year. Also the campus of choice for the professional foodie, the Culinary Arts program is a facet of EVC that stands out. Talented student chefs run both lunch and dinner operations for Bistro 3158 every semester. Workforce Solutions is also partnered with ACC at this campus, and they work with Capital Idea helping people file for unemployment or retrain to reenter the workforce. For eligible applicants, they provide grants to help pay for a semester’s tuition at ACC.

out of bounds comedy festival (September 1-7)For fans of off the cuff comedy, it doesn’t get better than Out Of Bounds. Non-stop improv shows, comedy classes, and other events will have you laughing so hard that you’ll pee a tiny bit.

austin gay and lesbian film festival (September 8-13)Austin’s gay community hosts this film festival focusing on the loves, lives, and legal battles of gay and transgender folks around the world.

fantastic fest (September 24 - October 1)The official motto, “like a film festival with all the boring parts cut out,” couldn’t be more accurate. Zombies, vampires, and all sorts of freaks and geeks abound at this international expose of the obscure and obscene.

acl (October 2-4) In the past few years, this fall music festival has eclipsed the live performance show that gave it its name. Now one of the most popular music fests in the country, Austin City Limits festival is a weekend of fun and great bands, both nostalgic and up and coming.

austin film festival (October 22 -29)Austin has a vibrant film community all year long, but Austin Film Festival is the time of year where we put it on display and proudly show it off. Both internationally celebrated dramas and shorts by local auteurs are featured, giving the festival a rather eclectic array of programming.

fun fun fun fest (November 7-8) Though no longer free, fall’s Fun Fun Fun festival does its best to live up to its name while providing a cheap alternative to the stiff ACL ticket prices. Artists tend to be a little more low profile and tents sway toward themes like indie, comedy, and punk.

zilker park trail of lights (December 13-23)In the spirit of non- denominational holiday celebration, Austin illuminates this stretch of Zilker Park with retina wowing light displays. Come check out the pretty lights, they’re like, totally awesome.

frontera fest (January 13-February 6)Frontera Fest is Austin’s highly creative fringe theater scene’s time to shine. Over several weeks, across several stages, Austinites and outsiders put on short and long form plays ranging from drama to comedy to outright weird and experimental.

sxsw (March 12-16)The little music industry shindig that put Austin on the map has since exploded into a week long blowout of hot bands, cutting edge films, and more events and parties than most other cities see in a calendar year.

austin reggae festival (April 17-18)Formerly known as Marley Fest, until the Marley estate took issue with the use of their name, Austin Reggae Fest is an outdoor concert where fans of Caribbean originated rhythms gather to enjoy the iration.

eeyore’s birthday party (April 24)In one of A.A. Milne’s beloved Winnie the Pooh tales, downtrodden donkey Eeyore is depressed that no one re-membered his birthday until he stumbles onto his very own surprise party. Austin hippies have continued to make that dear old donkey proud with this annual celebration of drum circles and dreadlocks in Pease Park.

fusebox (Spring)Austin is a city with a rich and diverse artistic community. For those scratching their heads trying to figure out what’s worth seeing, Fusebox pulls in the best of the best from the cultural edge and then offers up dance, perfor-mance art, stand up, and music acts for a more than affordable price.

chaos in tejas (Spring)There are more than a few music festivals each year in Austin, but Chaos in Tejas is hands down the most punk rockinest of them all. Get ready for mohawks and heavy metal mayhem.

rot rally (June 10-13)Each June, swarms of bikers flood downtown to rev their engines and party. Even if you try to avoid the hullabaloo, you’ll still see packs of custom choppers tearing down I-35 all week long.

Serving a little over 9,000 students last spring, Northridge has ACC’s highest enrollment. Home to a wide variety of degree specialties, Northridge is perfectly suited to students of many interests from an ear for music to an eye for details. In the on campus recording studio, students eager to break into music or Commercial Music Management can get their hands on the knobs and levels, mastering their fellow students’ vocals to a perfect pitch. The Choral/Vocal program at Northridge provides those singing students an opportunity to perform in a choir ensemble or work on solo skills. For the more computer oriented students, Northridge’s Computer Studies program offers degrees or certificates in Animation, Graphic Arts and Illustration, and is home to the widely popular Gaming Institute, for anyone who has their heart set on being the mastermind behind the next big game. For students that are a little more down to earth, the Physical Science department is about 610 feet down. Northridge is home to a 610 foot deep well that is used in partnership between ACC’s Environmental Science and Technology departments and Austin area secondary schools to teach students about local geology and environmental science. So, whether one wants to write opera, develop code, or dig deep into the natural world, Northridge campus has you covered.

Nestled among the trees of southwest Austin stands the Pinnacle Campus, which focuses on academic transfer and selected workforce programs like Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, and Computer Science and Management. Pinnacle is also home to ACC’s Distance Learning program, a series of classes offered online that allow students to complete coursework and study material on their own time, and then submit it digitally. The advanced technology at Pinnacle isn’t just reserved for telecommuting students though. The campus has a state-of-the-art television studio and production facility, capable of video teleconferencing and satellite feeds. In the Commons, Room 108, on the first floor at the campus you will find the Student Life lounge where students can take a break and relax from everyday stresses. Here, Student Life provides entertainment, a community library of books donated by students, faculty, and staff, and hosts events for the campus such as the semiannual Art Show. ACC recently purchased the property to the east of the Pinnacle Campus and is planning to build a new parking lot that is proposed to be completed fall 2010. A plan is also being developed to improve space in the Cashier, Admissions and Records, and Campus Police Office areas on the first floor. This plan will include remodeled space for Student Life. The college is continuing to work on projects that will beautify the grounds in and around the building.

A short hop from the bustling culture and nightlife of Austin’s Downtown, Rio Grande Campus is the de facto destination for students looking to foster their creative spirit. Featuring sculpture and ceramic workshops, ACC’s only dance studio, and two performance theaters, Rio Grande has plenty of space for students to sculpt, craft, create, and move. All of ACC’s dance classes are hosted at Rio Grande as well as upper division theatre. Aspiring actors can hone their craft on stage in the numerous productions put on at Rio Grande, while those looking to work behind the scenes will love the set building freedom afforded by the scene shop. The perks of being centrally located unfortunately mean that parking can be a bit sparse, but with the new seven story parking garage scheduled to be open and operating mere blocks from campus, students should find their walking distance dramatically shortened.

Riverside Campus, located in southeast Austin, has several different programs that are unique to the location. A large section of the Computer Aided Design (CAD) classes, specifically in the Automotive and Heating and Air Conditioning courses are at Riverside. These classes help students learn the skills they need to find employment and succeed in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration fields. If using heat to fuse two pieces of metal together or overseeing the construction of large buildings is your thing, the Welding and Construction Management classes are also taught on this campus. For students who want a certificate in Jewelry Making, Riverside is your campus. Many of the Kinesiology classes are based there as well. For the highly motivated, the ACC Honors program recently relocated to this campus. Built on the grounds of what used to be Austin Country Club, Riverside campus is also the only campus with its very own golf course.

The South Austin Campus is the newest ACC campus until Round Rock opens next year. This campus serves as a south location for students interested in Visual Communication classes. Students seeking an associate degree in 2D or 3D animation, graphic design, or computer illustration, but who don’t live near the Northridge Campus which also has many of the VisCom courses, can attend classes at SAC. This campus is also headquarters for the English for Speakers of Other Languages Department. ESOL classes offer instruction in writing, grammar and oral communication to students whose first language is not English. This program also offers classes for deaf and hard of hearing students taught in sign language. This allows students to attend classes without the use of an interpreter. ACC has also partnered with AISD’s Crockett High School located across the street from the campus to create the Crockett-ACC Automotive Center. Automotive classes are available to both high school and college students through the new center.

The Highland Business Center, located across the street from Highland Mall, is unlike any of the other campuses. However, there is a good chance that, as an ACC student, you will visit this location at least once. This is where the GED program is based as well as the Adult Education Department. Besides the GED testing, many of the placement tests are scheduled at this location. This is also home to the continuing education classes that are non-credit programs for students who wish to further their career or personal skills. Also, HBC is the headquarters for all of ACC’s legislative and government interactions and administrative offices.

The ACC Round Rock Campus will be the newest ACC campus. The 274,431 square foot campus will eventually house 11,500 students. This is the largest construction project ACC has ever taken on, and it comes at a time when the college is experiencing record enrollment. The Round Rock Campus will have a state-of-the-art hospital simulation lab, urban green spaces with walkway interconnected buildings for pedestrian traffic, and an outdoor amphitheater. Construction started in late March 2009 and the school is scheduled to open in 2010. The college is also exploring potential campus sites in other areas like San Marcos, Bastrop County, Manor, Leander, and the Lake Travis/Dripping Springs/Wimberley area.

A close proximity to fast food restaurants but not to gro-cery stores will negatively impact your diet. Living 20

minutes away from any friends or nightlife spots is going to curtail your social life. Also, a neighborhood that is annoying, noisy, or unsafe is just going to be a bad time. Where you live is a decision that you want to put some thought into.

Fortunately for you, ACC has seven campuses spread throughout the greater Austin area and is continuing to grow farther into the city of Round Rock, so any environment you choose to reside in will be relatively close to a campus. However, that still leaves a lot of options and decisions needing to be made, and whether you opt to live in jam packed student apartments with rowdy roommates and neighbors coming out your ears or in tranquil peace in a north Austin studio with just you, your laptop, and your cat, there are many things you need to know.

Get LuckyOne way to find that perfect place, but not always the most ef-fective, is to just wait for it to fall into your lap. Run your mouth whenever you’re around other people and make sure everyone knows you’re looking for some place to settle into. Maybe your friend’s sister’s coworker’s boyfriend’s step-mom has a cute little garage apartment in Hyde Park that she is looking to rent out, and you can just stumble into it. Maybe, but it’s not likely.

Equally dicey is driving around and looking for “For Rent” signs. If your heart is set on a certain neighborhood, it’s not a bad idea, but otherwise you’re going to put a lot of miles on your car for not much of a return. That is unless you are completely new to Austin, in which case it’s a nice way to waste an afternoon and get to see the city.

craiGsList.orGA few years ago Craigslist was a great way to match yourself up with some new roommates who happened to share your love of Tai Chi, X-box, and organic gardening. Now that it has become the go-to housing hunter for ages 18 to infinity, the success rate has diminished somewhat. A well written ad with a picture for someplace cute and affordable is going to get about 50 responses in the first 15 minutes. That’s a lot of competition for your little e-mail to fight against, so make sure if anyone bothers to read what you wrote its worth their time. They don’t need a full-on autobiography, but some details about who you are and where you are from go further than generic promises and pleasantries like “I’m totally chill, drama-free, and I always do my dishes.” Anyone who says they always do their dishes, is lying. If you are looking for an apartment on Craigslist, you’ll be browsing mostly stock ads for complexes that are “Fun, upscale, and conveniently close to downtown.” By that they mean it’s in Round Rock. If you’re going to deal with people prone to exaggeration, you might as well take them on face to face.

GettinG furnitureBefore you rush out to drop thousands of dollars on put-it-to-gether-yourself furniture at Ikea, it’s not a bad idea to see what you can get second hand. Couches, futons, matresses, and bed frames, all of varying quality and condition, abound on Craig-slist. Come May, when students graduate and leave their lives in Austin behind, Craigslist becomes a veritable fire sale of used furnishings. Lots of which is dirt cheap and needs to go IM-MEDIATELY! Remember, just because you’re in college doesn’t mean all of your furniture has to be made out of milk crates.

stuDyinGWhen you’re putting together your place, it’s important to make sure you’ll be able to get school work done there. Reading text-books in bed often ends up as a nap, so it’s a good idea to have a not-so-comfortable chair or couch where you can pound through those reading assignments, as well as a desk where you

can type up those ten page term papers. If you’re living alone, you’ll pretty much be in control of your home environment, but if you plan to save on rent by living with roommates, it can get tricky.

roommatesWhen it comes to living with others, similar schedules can be much more important than long standing friendships. Your party animal best friend who loves listening to his music loud - maybe not the best choice. They say opposites attract, but when it comes to living under the same roof as someone, it’s better to stick to your own kind. Quiet studious types should seek out the same, and neatniks and slobs should never ever partner up for a place.

cLeaninGWhile rushing from work to school to social engagements, it’s easy to neglect the growing mountain of dishes in the sink or the overflowing hamper. Setting aside one day a week to tidy up not only keeps your place from becoming a revolting pigsty that friends refuse to set foot in, it also helps you unwind, relax, and get your head together. Pick a day where you don’t work, find some good upbeat music, and just put forth enough effort to keep yourself from living in a landfill. Life is more fun when your friends don’t make a barf face at the thought of coming over to hang out.
