KWAZULU-NATAL ATHLETICS
Sport around the world
and across different
codes is driven through
club systems; this is so
because clubs are the
closest sporting unit to
communities, the very
life-blood of sport.
Rooted in communities,
where other community
organizations such as
religious institutions as
well as schools are to be
found, sporting clubs not only have short reaction time to identifying
talent, but act as the basic support system towards nurturing raw
talent and grooming it to national and international stardom.
Like any other systems, constant systems re-engineering and
evolution of the club system driven by professionalism and corporate
sector involvement demands high levels of corporate governance
and transparency while continuing to place development and
transformation at its core. This has resulted in sport not only driving
national and global tourism industry, but has become big business
in its own right.
It is therefore vital to appoint people with impeccable skill, experience
and qualifications in the critical areas of Financial and Human
Resources Management, Marketing, Fundraising, and operations
management at the operational and governance leadership of clubs,
sporting associations and federations. It is no longer enough to
have talent or be the loudest in the house, it is the proven ability
to achieve stated goals that determines the success or failure of a
sporting organisation.
Challenges Facing Athletics Club SystemKwaZulu-Natal Athletics has over 280 clubs representing over 15
000 registered runners in the province.
By far the biggest challenge is the inability of the club system to
service the needs of social and professional runners.
At professional level corporate clubs, with superior resources, are
able to look after professional runners more efficiently, while at social
level the costs of belonging as well as over-regulation by federation
drives aspiring social runners away. This is evidenced by the fact that
in the 2016/17 calendar year, three times more temporary license
numbers than permanent were sold. At our inaugural FNB 10KM CITY
SURFRUN, with over 6000 participants, over 80% wore temporary
license numbers and therefore had nothing to do with clubs.
In the same vein, alternate and relatively new running codes such as
Park Runs, Tri-Athlons and Trail Runs continue to grow and attract
corporate sponsors for support.
With the departure of Usain Bolt, who brought talent, Muhammed Ali
type of confidence, and more importantly entertainment in athletics,
our sport is going to have to innovate in order to remain relevant. It is
for this reason that KZN Athletics has adopted a unique Coach rather
than administrator led district development system.
History and experience at provincial, national and international
level clearly shows that any administrator led development system
is bound to fail as it always gets bogged down with sport politics
and maladministration. It rapidly deteriorates into a self-serving
patronage system that forgets in whose interests it serves as it
alienates runners.
In Life seek nothing but Happiness... you will know when you found one, because nothing else will matter!

KZN MASTERS ASSOCIATION
All women athletes over the age of 30 years are eligible to belong nationally and compete internationally. Men are eligible to compete nationally but only from 35 years internationally. We compete in 5 year age categories in Track and Field, Road, Cross country and Race Walking. There are set standards for Provincial and National colours. After 2 years membership, one can qualify for Provincial and National colours according to the criteria laid out by the Provincial and National bodies. KZN Masters are members of SAMA (South African Masters Association), who is affiliated to all Provinces through ASA, also IAAF and WMA (World Masters Athletics). Provincial Championships are held annually in most Provinces with the South African Championships late April/early May each year. Every 2 years WMA has an International event hosted by a different country. The next will be in October in Perth in 2017, Korea 2019. For further information please contact the secretary or Chairman, details are also on our website.

ROAD SELECTION CRITERIA FOR ASA NATIONALS
Athletes must compete in and achieve the qualifying times at the prescribed Provincial Championship. However, achievement of qualifying times makes the athlete eligible for selection but does not guarantee selection.
In addition to KZN Championships, potential athletes must participate in additional selection/fitness test event. Performance in other races may be an additional consideration.
A valid medical certificate or acceptable reason must be given in writing if an athlete does not comply with a stated policy. All selections are at the discretion of the selectors and the Road Commission.
Any athlete who declines selection without a valid reason will be ineligible, subject to the discretion of the Road Commission, for selection for the next two years.
