Kurri Kurri High School prides itself in recognising and acknowledging student excellence, achievement and leadership. The 2016 student leaders’ induction was held on Friday 9th October. The induction was attended by many of our school leader’s carers and friends. It was heart warming to watch the school leaders carers or friends pin the badges on each of the leaders. I look forward to working with this fantastic group of students.

Excellence and Achievement

Student excellence and achievement is rewarded at merit assembles, via positive letters sent home and through our STARS reward system. During week two this term, we held our merit assemblies celebrating student excellence and achievement during Term 3. Over 150 awards for excellence, consistent effort, attendance and school citizenship were awarded. In particular, one student from each year group was recognised for excellence and their ongoing commitment and service to the school. These recognition awards are generously sponsored by our school’s Parents and Citizens Association.

In addition to our merit assemblies, over six hundred letters were mailed to parents by classroom teachers recognising the ongoing consistent effort demonstrated by students through Term 3. It is enormously gratifying to know that the overwhelming majority of our students actively participate and value their learning in our school.

Deputy Principal Report (Years 7&8) - Mr Hope

As we begin to move through Term 4 things are well underway for preparations for 2016. Year 7 & 8 students should have all handed in their elective section forms for next year to try and secure a spot in their preferred subject. We are also preparing for our Annual Awards Night to be held on Tuesday 8th December at 7pm in the gym. This evening recognises the fantastic achievements of all our students throughout 2015.

We are also preparing to welcome our new groups of year 7 students. Many of these students have been busy submitting application forms for the Academic Enrichment Program being offered in 2016. The applications were of a very high standard and all applicants should be commended for the first step in this process. Students will now attend a formal interview to showcase their school work and projects.

This term we have also, hopefully, welcomed some new members into our Junior AECG. Mrs James-Cliff, our JAECG coordinator along with our JAECG committee welcomed close to 20 students from our partner primary schools to meet with our JAECG and participate in a meeting and an art workshop. This was a fantastic experience for all involved and a great way to show how active the Junior AECG is within Kurri Kurri High School

Congratulations to all those students who received awards at the recent Merit Assemblies. These awards recognise your achievements, so be proud of your efforts.

Finally as we move into the warmer months, I would like to remind students and parents about appropriate school uniform and ensure all students are following the school’s uniform policy.

For Junior Girls, the summer uniform in the pale or powder blue school blouse with the school blue tartan/checked skirt or the school navy blue shorts.

For Junior Boys, the summer uniform is also a pale blue/powder blue standard style pointed collar school shirt with navy blue school shorts.

A REMINDER TO ALL PARENTS. If you haven’t already done so

since the previous newsletter,

please read and send back the

completed “Permission to

Publish” form enclosed with this

newsletter. It is important that

this information in kept up-to-

date.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Deputy Principal Report (Years 9 &10) – Mrs James-Cliff

Welcome back to Term 4 which proves to be a very busy time for Year 9 and 10. Year 10 in particular have a few big events scheduled for this term. The Authentic Assessment is scheduled to run in Week 8, so students should be gathering their work samples and starting to prepare for the upcoming interviews. Students will also be required to complete the All My Own Work program this term in preparation for undertaking senior studies next year.

Year 10 exams will be running across a range of subjects in weeks 3 and 4, so students are advised to spend time revising classwork prior to their scheduled exams so that they may perform to the best of their ability. It is important to remember that, unlike the School Certificate which was previously awarded at the completion of Year 10, the Record of Student Achievement (ROSA) grades are awarded by the school based on student performance in coursework, so continued application to classwork and assessment tasks must remain a priority. For those students who have any outstanding assessment tasks, it is important to get them completed and submitted as soon as possible so that yearly reports can reflect your true level of achievement.

Year 9 will also have a range of assessment tasks and exams to complete in preparation for their Yearly Reports so it is important that they too remain focused right until the end of the year. Some Year 9 students will be required to sit exams across a range of subjects in Week 5, so thorough revision will also prove beneficial to ensure maximum outcomes are achieved. Other than that, have a great term!

Year 10 Authentic Assessment 2015 INTERVIEWS ARE SCHEDULED FOR

WEEK 8 NOVEMBER 24, 25, 26

All students need to be making the

most of the mentoring sessions.

If you are unsure of what is required for Authentic

Assessment, you need to see Ms Taylor

as soon as possible.

Deputy Principal Report (Years 11 & 12) - Mrs Andrews

Year 12 are currently completing Higher School Certificate written examinations. These examinations continue until November 4. We wish Year 12 well as they continue with the examinations and for the future. Year 12 students should check their Students Online account for any notices from the BOSTES. Many resources to assist during the HSC are available on this website including the new Test Yourself App which has free trials that can be downloaded from Google Play or Apple’s App Store. Students are able to complete the free questions and then decide if they wish to purchase subject packs which range in price from $1.99 to $3.99 per subject.

Caterina Brambilla, an exchange student from Italy, has been a very welcome addition to the Year 11 group. We hope Caterina enjoys her time here and her Australian experience.

Year 11 students commence Higher School Certificate courses this term and some students are electing to alter their pattern of study. Students must meet with Mrs Andrews before any changes occur.

Students completing the Higher School Certificate in 2016 have recently received important documentation including their assessment booklets for Higher School Certificate courses. This booklet contains information about assessment procedures, timelines and outlines of tasks. Any student, who did not attend the Merit Assembly and has not signed for the assessment booklet, must see Mrs Andrews. The 2016 Higher School Certificate Rules and Procedures booklet has also been distributed to senior students. Students need to read this booklet thoroughly and there will be follow up activities from this during Step Up sessions.

Members of the Junior AECG have represented the school at many recent events. They have been excellent ambassadors for our school.

Congratulations to all recipients of awards at the Stage Merit Assemblies. It is great to see so many students being recognised for their achievements and efforts.

CFMEU School Grants Program

Earlier this year, the school was nominated to apply for a Grant from the CFMEU which are awarded to High Schools in the Northern Mining and NSW Energy District. As part of the application three of our students had to write an essay on the topic of “What have Unions ever done for us?”.

The essays were written and submitted, along with a request to purchase 5 laptops/tablets and a storage trolley for the English faculty. Late in September the good news finally arrived that Kurri Kurri High School was one of only 7 schools to receive a grant. It should be noted that the majority of the recipient schools were non-public schools, our receiving one of the grants is a genuine reflection of the high standard of work that Kurri Kurri High School students are producing. A special congratulations goes to Year 11 student Jaidah Pauling for her winning essay. For her efforts, Jaidah’s essay will be published on the CFMEU Northern Mining and NSW Energy District website and Newsletter in early 2016 PLUS she will be presented with her own iPad and cover.

This grant is greatly appreciated by the English Faculty and will allow the students we teach will have greater access to technology. This will also allow staff to utilise them more within the classroom so that we are creating engaging lessons for 21st century learners.

Inspirational and Funny - Taylah Oliver Year 10

John Larkin an award winning author visited our school on the 16th of October 2015 to present two of his exquisite novels “Shadowgirl” and “The Pause”. Larkin’s presentation gave students an understanding and insight into what it’s like to be an author giving clear academic and audience appropriate responses to all questions asked. His friendly personality enabled kids to feel comfortable, confident and intrigued in his humorous stand up jokes and personal past experiences. Comments from numerous students who attended gave positive and pleasant feedback. “I think John Larkin is an inspirational author and comedian. His two recent books ‘Shadowgirl’ and ‘The Pause’ are currently being made into films. His story has inspired me to be kind and live life to the fullest”- Kiearna Weldon year 7,

Larkin’s books will soon be transformed into films, that he has written the screen play for, and will be shown at local theatres around all regions. Before finishing up his sensational speech Larkin mentioned that authors who do tours around the regional areas of NSW all say Kurri Kurri High School is one of the most pleasing and respectful schools they have spoken at. Therefore John Larkin’s attendance and presentation was phenomenal and we hope to have his appearance as a guest here at Kurri Kurri High School again.

Rock and Water - Mr Berry

The Rock and Water program was developed by Dutch educator and author Freerk Ykema, and has been taught to over 15,000 teachers and youth workers in Australia since 1998. Today, more than 35,000 teachers in 14 countries have trained approximately 2 million students.

Rock and Water is a psycho – physical method for teaching students to:

Become stronger & more skillful

Learn how to cope with conflict, aggression, bullying

Recognise and develop their personal qualities

Develop social skills and resilience

Gain control over their body, emotions and thoughts

Reflect on self, thoughts, behaviour, actions

Develop understanding of, and relationships with, oth-er students

Rock and Water is currently being taught by Mr Berry to a small group of year 8 students in term 4, with plans to extend it to the larger school community next year.

Year 12 Graduation and Formal

The last Thursday of Term 3 saw us celebrate and farewell the Year 12 class of 2015. We had 80 students graduate and fellow students, staff, parents and friends were all there to see the proud, relieved and at times even emotional faces of Year 12 reminisce over the past 13 years of being at school.

The school formal followed that evening at The Sebel Kirkton Park, where more memories and celebrations were to be had, with everyone looking their best in formal attire and showing how very ready they all are for taking on life after school.

SRC Fun Run for Carrie’s Place - Emily Lloyd SRC Representative On the 16th of September Term 3, the SRC held a Fun Run to wish farewell to the Year 12 students and to raise money for a charity in need. “Carrie’s Place” was the chosen organisation this year who we raised $900 and collected four boxes of non-perishable foods for. Carries Place is an amazing organisation who helps support women and children experiencing domestic violence. For over 30 years Carries Place has been in the Maitland are helping those in need feel safe again.

The Fun Run was a huge success! Many students and teachers were planning their outfits for weeks before the exciting day. The SRC volunteered to set-up, prepare, cook and sell the yummy sausage sizzle, drinks and ice blocks. Thank you to everyone who helped make this amazing day the great success it was.

We are off to Belvoir Street Theatre later this term to see two plays. These tickets are funded through Belvoir’s educational program, which I apply for each year to receive free ticket. This is a valuable experience for students as they experience live theatre, develop knowledge and understanding of performance techniques, production elements, design not to mention theatre etiquette and the joy of attending the theatre.

This year Cessnock City Council’s Mayoral Photography Challenge has set the theme as ‘Change’. Several year 8 photography students have just submitted their entries. These students include Shamel Tasker, Alyza Watson, Tayla Kennedy, Chelsea White, Emilyse Kelly, Kiara Hawley and Olivia Page. They have entered into the high school category and we wish them luck.

The final workshop as part of the Creative Arts project led by the University of Newcastle was held in week 2. Kurri Kurri High School students participated joined with Mount View High School students who visited our school and continued the collaborative process.

We have now arrived at the point in the project where the objective is to give students the opportunity to produce work ready to move into the final stages of rehearsing. Students from both schools performed their entire piece and received constructive feedback. Each school then worked with an experienced community theatre director facilitator, a technical production manager and student mentors to further develop and improve their piece. During the workshop, a videographer filmed each schools performance, documented the process and interviewed students.

Students participating in the project have worked diligently and collaboratively to produce their own creative work. Students will continue to finalise and make adjustments in preparation for the project titled, ‘Performing Technology in my Life’ performance on Thursday November 5th between 7pm-9pm at the Griffith Duncan Theatre at the University of Newcastle. Entry is free, however, if you would like to reserve a seat to watch this performance or additional information regarding the project please visit: http://performingtechnology.eventbrite.com.au/

CAPA News - F Dunlevie HT

Every term in CAPA is jam packed with opportunities for students to experience a variety of activities to enhance learning experiences occurring in the classroom. This term is no exception.

We are thrilled to announce that Sam Madden has been chosen to perform at the "Reprise" concert to be held at the Newcastle Conservatorium in February next year. "Reprise" is a celebration of outstanding HSC Music performances in the Hunter. Sam's performance of the technically challenging "YYZ" by Rush has been selected and he will be supported by year 10 students Jack Anderson and Jed Kinch. This is a wonderful achievement and we look forward to hearing the "Reprise" version in February. Well done boys.

On Tuesday13th October 20 wonderful drama students had the opportunity to participate in two workshops and work with Anna Houston, a professional actor and teacher. Anna has worked extensively in Australia and overseas and has a wealth of experience that she is able to pass onto students. The first workshop was group devising with a focus on teamwork, exploring ways to come up with ideas without dialogue and develop them into a performance piece. The second workshop, Performing Monologues took students out of their comfort zones. Through improvisation students explored the different ways to interpret dialogue and perform dialogue. The standard of work, focus, creativity and performances delivered by this group of students was outstanding. The feedback from Anna was fantastic and highly complementary. I was so proud of these fabulous students and they are a credit to Kurri Kurri High School.

Mental Health Month - Mrs Weir HT Welfare

This year's theme is "Value Your Mind", which focuses on thinking about how mental health exists in our daily lives and importance for everyone to make mental health a priority. When we do this, we are practising self- care which is an important part of our daily living.

On Monday 12th October all of year 9 participated in mental health month workshops facilitated by the Reach Foundation, InRythem Drumming and supported by Cessnock Youth Centre and Outreach Services (CYCOS)

Reach supports young people to get the most out of life. They aim to improve the wellbeing of young people so they can be healthy and resilient to meet life's

challenges, and fulfil their potential. Their youth-led workshops are for any young person between 10-18 years of age.

Reach creates a space for teenagers where everyone, no matter who they are or what their circumstances, can explore their lives and connect with other people they can relate to, a place where they can go to talk honestly about what's going on – about their fears and their dreams – without being judged and with people who understand.

InRythem drumming provided our year 9 students with the perfect non-threatening environment to build their social skills, confidence levels, self- esteem, stress levels and much more!

The group drumming experience brought our students together in a non -competitive space and become a vehicle to empower their human spirit, realign their body's energy system, stimulate creativity, build community, foster team spirit, promote healing and enhance general wellbeing and quality of life.

Some student feedback….

“it was awesome, I think we should do more of this…. It was great to get to know others in my year group”……Nikayla White

“the drumming was awesome, it put a smile on my face …” Josie Turner

Watch out WHOOPING COUGH is about. It is vital that immunisations are up-to-date.

Whooping cough usually begins like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough.

The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be

followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a "whooping" sound. The cough

can last for many weeks and can be worse at night.

Some newborns may not cough at all but they can stop breathing and turn blue. Some babies have

difficulties feeding and can choke or gag.

Older children and adults may just have a cough that lasts for many weeks. They may not have the whoop.

Youth off the Streets Scholarship - Mrs Sutherland CLO

During the recent holidays, I had the pleasure of joining graduating Year 12 student Sheridan Lewis in Sydney as she accepted her scholarship towards further study at the Youth off the Streets National Scholarship Awards.

This scholarship is awarded each year to a group of young people, all of whom experience a range of barriers in life. As Father Chris Riley stated at the ceremony, the recipients “… have survived the doubters, the put downs, a lack of resources, lack of support and opportunity. You’ve navigated through violence and conflict, challenges with family life, and some have even survived oppressive international regimes. But through your incredible strength you have…endured and conquered all of these challenges.”

Sheridan, along with 21 other recipients from across Australia all met in Sydney to not only officially be given the financial support provided from the scholarship, but to also meet her mentor. For the next two years, whilst funding will help her to be able to study, Sheridan will also have the support of a mentor who has been matched specifically to her, to help her achieve her goals.

Participating in the weekend was certainly a privilege. Sheridan and the other recipients all showed such an amazing drive and belief in making life better across a diverse range of study and career aspirations. Whilst having to overcome challenges that young people should not have to face, Sheridan was chosen as much for her determination, demonstrated ability and a vision for her future. Congratulations Sheridan, best wishes for your future success.

Senior Construction Project - Mr Hall

Kurri Kurri High School Y12 Construction students have recently planned, formed up and then concreted an area near the back oval. This mandatory unit saw a project develop out of a need to avoid traipsing through the long grass behind metal work to arrive at the Construction Shed.

"Why can’t the path extend around the corner" was voiced on many occasions. Then upon being informed we had the go ahead to begin stage 1, the boys were keenly involved in all aspects of the project.

The big day came, with a concrete truck arranged to arrive and like all good projects, Jordan Digby, Zac Sternbeck, Zac Elliott, Ranon Holstein, Mitchell Fitzgerald, and Daniel Terris made last minute alterations and got the reinforcement mesh laid. Several hours and a few buckets of sweat later the slab was screeded, flattened, and finished of with a bull float to smooth off the surface to become another successful Year 12 construction project made to benefit the school.

Thanks to all those who wanted to write their name in the slab but listened to instructions and kept clear while the project was finished. We look forward to the challenges while continuing our project in 2016 to join the existing path some 20 metres away.

After focusing on a number of fitness styles inlcuding general fitness, Zumba and Yoga, students created their own 20 minute workshop which was delivered to Year 1 students. Throughout the process, students demonstrated leadership and team work skills and create valuable experiences for both themselves and the primary students.

We would like to thank Mrs Field and all the staff and students from Kurri Kurri Primary School for their involvement and look forward to bringing our workshops to you again sometime soon.

Congratulations, girls!

Sports & P.E. with Mr Derry

Greetings Folks. There was a fair bit happening back towards the end of Term 3 that didn’t quite catch the previous newsletter, so here is the good oil from me. You will also find more stories from fellow staff members on our other sporting achievements in the following pages.

On Friday the 11th of September the annual Coalfields Year 7 Gala Day was held. KKHS did extremely well against some quality opposition from Maitland H.S. Maitland Grossmann H.S, Rutherford H.S, Mt View H.S, and Cessnock H.S. Our Boy’s Touch Football, Girls Soccer and Girls Netball teams all won their overall tournaments and our other teams also competed very well.

Another big news story surrounding the P.E faculty at the end of last tem was our highly successful Crossroads excursion to Forster. Previously we have gone down to the beautiful South Coast town of Gerringong but this year we changed our compass and headed north to Fabulous Foster where we stayed at an Active Ed Camp on the former Ton ‘O’ Fun sight. Students and staff had a cracking three days from Monday the 14th of September to Wednesday the 16th of September. Apart from important lectures about topical issues to do with being a teenager, students also undertook many fun activities such as Quad Biking, Go Karting, Flying Fox, Giant Swing, Mud World and many more. As we left on the 3rd day, the camp coordinators commented on what a terrific bunch of kids we have and I’d have to agree.

Last but not least were the U/15 boys, who were given an outsider’s chance of a Semi Final berth, and no chance of winning, by most. However the team, including Angus Lathan and Matthew Finlay, played out of their skin to beat NNSW (Merewether HS boys) 3-2 and qualify for finals. Then managed to repeat the dose (2-1) the next morning in the highly anticipated Semi Final. The Grand Final against Sydney CITY (favourites) saw David take on Goliath with the giants falling to NNSW 4-3 in one the most unpredictable results in school Futsal’s history. Matt Finlay scored the winning goal, a moment that will be embellished and retold throughout time here at Kurri Kurri HS. Both boys were targeted to represent in a tour of Greece in late 2016.

This was our most successful championship ever – as evidenced by: 190 NNSW players competing; of those, 100 NNSW players were involved in the Final Series, 54 NNSW players played in National Finals, and 46 NNSW players came home with National Champions Trophies. For our school alone, 8 KKHS students received accolades by National Selectors with a special mention to Ainsley Childs who was deemed the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER of the Final Series

Thanks to Mr David Hunter for the continued use of the Gymnasium, the school teachers who volunteered their time to coach, and the KKHS school community for supporting our futsal champions.

National Schools Futsal Championships Brisbane Sep 28 to Oct 1 - 2015 - Mr Hall A very Proud NNSW School Futsal Coordinator In our last edition we praised the selection of 8 KKHS students in the NNSW Futsal squad who were bound for the National Championships in Brisbane.

I can now report back of our schools best ever round ball results. Our Year 7 girls were all involved in the U/13 competition and finished the preliminary games in first place. Then came out and blitzed Victoria City 5-0 by half time, which finished in an emphatic 8-2 victory. This pitted us against the home team in Queensland City in the Grand Final. With Ainsley Childs and Brooke Kennedy both scoring and Goal Keeper Emily Gordon extremely reliable in shot stopping, we won our first National Championship 7-1.

All three girls were noticed by selectors and offered places in the Australian Futsal Squad to tour the United Kingdom in mid 2016.

Maddison Bartlett played with the U/14 NNSW squad and was a regular contributor to their success. She scored one of the crucial goals to win the Semi Final and was strong throughout the Grand Final, eventually won by NNSW 4-3 late in the game. Maddison’s strength in positional marking, coupled with her aggressive tackling also caught the eye of the selectors, giving her a chance to tour for Australian Futsal – this time to Brazil in 2016.

The U/14 boys were divided into two pools of eight. With Izak Straker and Sam Whyburn helping NNSW Country make the Quarter Finals. Here they played in the championships most entertaining game which hurried to 0-6 but eventually finished 5-11. No other team managed 5 goals against the two time champions from Queensland City, and to come home 5-4 in the second half was a monumental effort. Our two boys were within 4/9 NNSW players that were offered places in the Australian Squad for Brazil in 2016.
