For our volunteers, there’s all that filing in the office that requires one to know his/her ABC’s, wrestling the boxes out of storage onto the truck, attending orientation sessions offered across the calendar…Then, there’s those times when you’ve said your ABC’s 1,000 times that day, spilled tie dye on your favorite shoes, and gone without “fancy” coffee for a week or two. We call all of those instances camp. It’s those moments of working together, being part of a group, and having new experiences, that fill up the days of camp. Camp itself will fill up with people . Camp, its memories and events, will fill up our hearts, too. The magic of camp is premiering, again, at Camp Kudzu. This summer marks the 150th anniversary of “summer camp” in America. In the summer of 1861, Frederick W. Gunn and his wife, Abigail, took the boys from their Washington, Connecticut school on a two week summer experience into the woods. The class hiked to their destination and then set-up camp. The students spent their time boating, fi shing, and trapping. The Gunnery Camp was so successful that the Gunn’s continued the tradition for twelve years.

Here we are, celebrating our traditions of Camp Kudzu for our twelfth year. Admittedly, the ability to register online wasn’t available and there were several less forms to fi ll out and the packing list was a little different than what we send out these days but the excitement and anticipation about the camp experience was similar in both instances for parents and campers.

Camp Kudzu is a magical place where campers have the opportunity to try new things, meet a diverse and interesting group of campers and staff, improve their own ability to manage their health and develop a sense of independence and maturity under the watchful eyes of a dedicated and talented group of staff. Camp Kudzu is like no other camp on earth.

Parents and family members frequently comment on the positive changes they see in their campers after spending time at camp. Staff share with us throughout the year what an impact campers make on them. Probably the single most often request I get is for Camp Kudzu to be ALL year and, if that can’t be worked out, a couple of weeks longer.

We will ever have camp for 365 days in a row? Maybe … Maybe not … But it does take 365 days of hard work from our dedicated program volunteers, our board members, our fund-raising cheerleaders, our generous friends and families to make Camp Kudzu happen.

We are having a great summer… we have new campers and new staff joining us for the fi rst time. We have staff and campers who have been here since that fi rst day 12 summers ago that will be with us, too. In thinking back, our fi rst summer, there were 96 campers and one week of camp. • Greetings to all our friends,

We completed the Kudzu Cup fore! Kids annual golf fund-raiser and, boy, is the news good. We shattered our

previous high water mark by more than $10,000 with a total raised of over $50,000. I want to personally thank all the

members of the golf committee who spent countless hours organizing the event, getting corporate sponsors for the

signs, meals and the foursomes. We had a great day at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven. Special thanks to Amber

Medley for orchestrating such a successful tournament.

Camp Kudzu had a full house at our Spring Family Camp with 33 families in attendance throughout the weekend,

and one family that spent Saturday with us. One third of the families had a child diagnosed with diabetes in the past

six months, and another one third had a child diagnosed in the past 18 months. The weekend was hugely impactful to

“new” families, thanks to the wisdom shared by veterans and by volunteers and staff. Thanks again to all the volunteers

that made Family Camp such a huge success, especially Laurie Hobbs, LCSW, who led a session about adjusting to the

new normal of life with diabetes, and to the panel of Bethany Kinsey, Dr. Andy Andrews, Billy Allen and Kelly Wheeles.

We have now had three family camps in a row with wait lists, refl ecting increasing numbers of diagnoses each year in

Georgia. Next Family Camp will be October 28 – 30, 2011.

We are in the middle of our favorite time of year: our three weeks of summer camp! We are at full capacity and

our goal is to serve over 600 children this summer with no waiting list. We look forward to serving a record number of

children this summer. Preparations include a day of assembling clinician and counselor supplies with the help of a 27

member task force from the Atlanta offi ce of Grant Thornton; a Saturday orientation May 14; a Tuesday and Thursday

night orientation in May; Kudzu U for new and experienced volunteers on May 21 and truck loading on Saturday, June

4! We’ll see new volunteers in August for more.

Our Compass Society continues to grow! Thanks to Warren Carson for his generous offer of the Atlanta Hawks suite

at Philips Arena and to Bobby Goldstein for hosting our most recent event. It is so nice to see how many people have

stepped up and joined the Compass Society. If you’d like to learn more reach out to Amber or Alex and they’d love to

help. This group is truly charting the future for our mission.

I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable summer and, if you have a child going to Camp, that they have the best

    week of their lives!!

    EVENTS AND PROGRAMS

The 2011 Kudzu Cup Fore! KidsAbout this time every year, a magical thing happens. The weather turns warmer, the grass gets greener…and Camp Kudzu’s corporate supporters hit the links! This year was no exception. On May 9th, Camp Kudzu hosted the annual Kudzu Cup fore! Kids at Capital City Club, Brookhaven. The course was bursting at the seams with 116 players vying for First Place, huge bragging rights, and the opportunity to take home the coveted Bruce Bode Cup.

Friendly competition turned to friendly celebration at the post-tournament reception. Players and other friends celebrated the tournament’s winners and recognized a very important member of the Kudzu Family, Dr. Bruce Bode. But, more importantly, the crowd celebrated that the Kudzu Cup fore! Kids raised more than $50,000 in support of Kudzu Campers!

Thank you to the Sponsors. Thank you the Players. Thank you to the Volunteers. Thank you to Capital City Club. You have made an impact on the lives of children living with diabetes!

Congratulations to the 2011 Kudzu Cup fore! Kids Winners

  • Dr. Christy Bowling is a force. She serves as the principal of Woodstock Elementary, manages a busy household, and during this winter’s snow and ice storm, while the rest of us were sledding and building snow men, Christy was fi nishing up the course work needed to earn her doctorate. Wow. (And, by the way, Christy’s daughter, Brooke, is a Kudzu Camper.)

Christy is the focus of this edition’s Volunteer Spotlight because of the work she did in support of the 2011 Sugar Bowl, Laser Tag and Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament. Early in the planning phase of the annual bowl-a-thon, Christy and her husband, Jim, met with me in her Woodstock Elementary offi ce to debrief me on how to tweak the Sugar Bowl to make it more appealing to Kudzu camper and volunteer families. I got some fantastic ideas! Prior to the event, Christy spent valuable time calling previous years team captains, recruiting them to participate in the 2011 Sugar Bowl.

When the time came for her own team to raise money, she REALLY got creative. Christy and her family did the usual. They asked family and friends for support. But, then Christy also engaged her school. A colorful fl yer was passed around the school with this header: “Woodstock Elementary School Supports Camp Kudzu!” The rest of the fl yer explained how they would do it:Casual for a Cause: Students and Teachers make a $.50 donation dress down. Monday Team Jersey Day, Tuesday was Tacky Day, Wednesday was Jeans and Slippers day. Thursday was PJ’s Day and Friday was Hat Day. Candy Grams: For two weeks in February, candy grams could be purchased for $1. They were delivered on Valentine’s Day. Kudzu Leaves: Kudzu leaves were bought for $.50 and used to

create a fantastic kudzu vine down the school’s walls. The class that donated the most money won a cookie party! Penny War: For one week, students dropped pennies in their grade’s jar. The grade with the most pennies at the end of the week won a popcorn party! This was one of the most creative and fun fund-raising campaigns I have seen! When it was all said and done, The Bowling Family and Woodstock Elementary School had raised more than $3,300 in support of Camp Kudzu!

At The Sugar Bowl, Christy and her family helped set-up for the big event…which is no small task! Christy even jumped behind the microphone to welcome the crowd and help announce winners. It’s rare to fi nd someone who is just as comfortable behind the scenes as they are the running the show…

I am inspired by Christy’s creativity, energy (she already has ideas for the 2012 Sugar Bowl), and willingness to support the programs that have meant so much to her and her family. Thank you for your time, talent, and treasure! You deserve your time in the Spotlight!

    Sincerely –

    Amber MedleyDevelopment Director

What are you planning on learning this summer? What? Learning in the summer? YES! Learning is part of what we do at camp while we are having all that fun in the sun! Last summer, we learned the effects of lower glycemic index diets and pre-meal bolusing on blood sugar levels.

This summer our theme is…Site Rotation! Why is this important you may ask? When you continue to inject insulin in the same place, insulin absorption decreases. You may require more insulin. This also can lead to hypertrophy – lumps and bumps under the

skin. Our goal this summer is to teach all our campers about what hypertrophy is, how to avoid it, and how to develop a method for site rotation.

    See you at camp!

    6 Summer 2011 Camp Kudzu

The Continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) subcommittee of the Medical Committee spent the Winter and Spring evaluating the

blood sugar control at Camp Kudzu. They created a database and then extracted blood sugars from the camp logs and entered them

into the database. They reviewed 30 cabins (half of all cabins) for the summer of 2010. They looked at 5 blood sugars per camper per

day. These are the fi ve mandatory blood sugars that each camper does each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack and midnight). That’s a

lot of blood sugars – 6629 to be exact! The results were very impressive. The average blood sugar was 166 and 50% of all blood sugars

were in the target range for camp of 100-200. They then performed the same analysis on 30 cabins from 2009 and found that the

blood sugar control improved signifi cantly from 2009 to 2010.

    See Table 1.

    Below Target Above Mean StandardDeviation

    2010 (30 cabins) (6629 BGs)

    21% 50% 29% 166 78

    2009 (30 cabins) (6654 BGs)

    19% 45% 36% 181 90

Although the exact reason for the improvements are not known, several changes in our blood sugar management protocols were

implemented in 2010. The three biggest changes were: pre-bolusing insulin before meals, low-glycemic index carbohydrates at meals,

and fruit for afternoon snack. Low glycemic index foods include whole wheat bread and pasta instead of white bread and pasta, brown

rice instead of white rice, and sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. These are changes that we would encourage campers to

    continue at home.

We are always trying to improve our diabetes management and evaluate our protocols to insure that we are following best practices

at Camp Kudzu. This year we are hoping to capture all our blood sugars electronically while camp is going on so we won’t have to do

manual chart reviews. Several volunteers are helping with this project.

Special thanks to camper, Grant Carlson, Jr., and volunteers Linda Demma, MD, PhD, and Lisa Tolbert, RN,CDE for all their time and hard

work on this project. And thank you to Jeff Goran and his team for their work on an electronic data entry program we’ll be evaluating

    this summer.

    VOLUNTEERSEVENTS AND PROGRAMS

    2011 Summer Edition

We will have three weeks of camp this summer and get to meet 600 campers. WOW!

For our campers, there’s going to be some times when the sun is in the correct spot, when the climbing hold on the wall is in the right spot and when the kickball lands in the right spot… Then, there’s going to be those times when the root in the trail isn’t where you want it to be or the rain cloud didn’t look at our activity schedule or the music ends one song too soon for everyone.

For our volunteers, there’s all that fi ling in the offi ce that requires one to know his/her ABC’s, wrestling the boxes out of storage onto the truck, attending orientation sessions offered across the calendar…Then, there’s those times when you’ve said your ABC’s 1,000 times that day, spilled tie dye on your favorite shoes, and gone without “fancy” coffee for a week or two.

We call all of those instances camp. It’s those moments of working together, being part of a group, and having new experiences, that fi ll up the days of camp.

Camp itself will fi ll up with people . Camp, its memories and events, will fi ll up our hearts, too. The magic of camp is premiering, again, at Camp Kudzu.

This summer marks the 150th anniversary of “summer camp” in America.

    We will see you soon!
