Tips to Answer Common Questions

Top five Tips: 1. Thoroughly read the question and highlight

the keywords. Make sure you are clear with: • How many marks are available? • What the examiner is looking for. • Identify examples to show your

understanding 2. Ensure you understand the command word:

state, explain, describe, compare. What is the examiner asking you to do?

3. Use keywords, for example; ‘coagulation’ and ‘radiation’.

4. When you get a high mark question break it down into chunks. For example if it is asking for advantages and disadvantages and it is worth 8 marks you need to think of four advantages and four disadvantages.

5. If you are stuck on a question draw a star next to it and come back to it later.

6. Read through your answers and extend them. Check that you have answered the question, included key words and made a point for each mark available.

Useful revision tips:

1. Before revising, get all your notes together and draw up a list of all the topics you need to cover. You will definitely cover all of the topics if you draw up this list. Use the topic list on the school’s GCSE mathematics Connect pages for this. Get all of your mathematics exercise books together as well as the school’s past paper question booklet which is available to buy (from January) and download.

2. Don’t just practice the topics you can do. Doing lots of questions can often help when revising for maths. If you are really good at percentages, for example, it is very tempting to keep doing lots of percentages questions. Although it can painful, make sure you spend time completing questions from any weaker topic areas. Look at the mark schemes to see how the answer has been worked out.

3. Practice doing questions under exam conditions. One of the best ways of getting ready is completing exam papers. Download a past exam paper and complete this in silence under exam conditions which means no help! This will get you used to what it will be like in the exam, how fast you need to go, and is the best way of checking that you really understand a topic. The more you do the better. Make sure you work out the grade achieved by referring to the relevant grade boundaries on the Connect page.

4. Practice using your calculator! All calculators work differently, and unless you have used yours for lots of different types of questions (trig, Pythagoras, negative numbers, indices), you might come unstuck in the exam. Find out if there are any problems early enough to correct them and speak to your teacher if unsure.

5. Make sure you ask for help. At the earliest opportunity seek help from your maths teacher making sure you have specific questions to ask them (e.g. particular ones from an exam paper or the past paper question booklet). Don’t leave this to just before the examination.

6. Use the beauty of algebra. A lot of people hate algebra, but in exams it is brilliant because you can easily tell whether you have got the question right or wrong. If you are solving an equation, just substitute the answer back into the question and see if it makes sense.

Complete 10% of the GCSE course vocabulary each half term.

Encourage your child to do Vocab Express when they are on their computer/phone/tablet

Check your child is using the programme properly - not looking at screenshots of the words! Flashcards

Look at the words you need to memorise. Filter out the words that are easy to remember.

Make flashcards for the words you think you’ll struggle remembering. Write the word in Spanish on one side and the word in English on the other side.

Look at your flashcards a few times. Shuffle the cards and do it again a couple of times.

Now, try to look at the English words and say or write the words in Spanish/French.

Shuffle the cards and do it again a couple of times. Put the cards that you know very well aside.

Concentrate on the cards that you find harder. Repeat! How do I revise useful phrases or chunks of text?

Use a whiteboard to write out the sentence. Your child should read the sentence a few times, then you should cover some words in the text and see if they can still read it correctly.

Write the first letter of the each word and see if you can fill in the sentence.

Use memorizer.me to practise this online.

The web site to use is www.technologystudent.com. If there is an issue with a certain topic, google it and that will jog memories.

Useful resources:

YouTube – It will teach you in a visual manner how things are achieved.

The Specification from the website above!

Don’t forget the maths and science elements!

Page 27: KS4 Subject Information & Support - rainford.org.ukrainford.org.uk/.../2019/09/1.-KS4-Subject-Information-Support-bookle… · - LO3 Understand postnatal checks, ... The central processing

27

Useful revision tips: 1. Go through the specification & make sure you are familiar with it 2. Make sure you understand ALL the ‘technical principals’ AND ONE of the ‘in-depth knowledge

and understanding’ sections (natural and manufactured timbers) 3. Create a mind map for each of the topic areas 4. Make a list of the words/sentences that you don’t understand and speak to me! 5. Go through all the previous work that we have done 6. Attempt any and all past papers/questions 7. Teach a relative about each section of the spec, get them to ask questions about areas they

don’t understand and that will mean you haven’t taught it well enough, but do you know there answers

8. Key Word Flash Cards - Write a load of key words on one side of the flash card and write details on the back, Hang them up and the ones you don’t understand are the ones to turn over and learn

9. Toilet Reading create another set of revision cards with a brief explanation of each topic area, Leave it in the loo and when nature calls read through them!!

Involve your Relatives!! Dear Parents, The questions to ask are probing or digging questions because low level marks come from a statement e.g. that product is made from Oak. The higher level question has a why attached e.g. that product is made from Oak because it is aesthetically pleasing and very hard wearing. The WHY question: Look at something your son/daughter has written and see if they have written a WHY and if not WHY not. The HOWEVER question: Another check is to see if there is a depth of knowledge with a HOWEVER question because the last set of questions in the exam require a fact based argument often having to show both sides of an argument. E.G A positive of CADCAM is that it can run 24hrs a day because it doesn’t need to go home or have holidays HOWEVER the set up cost is very high and often leads to job loses The “IS THAT IMPORTANT” Discussion: Teenagers are very good at arguing! This is a plus on this exam. There is a list that the pupils will have of topics that could come up and you can argue with them about it e.g. Q - What’s ergonomics?/ A – How a product fits people Q – IS THAT IMPORTANT?/ A – Makes products fit all users Q - IS THAT IMPORTANT?/ A – Companies can sell to all people Q - IS THAT IMPORTANT?/ A – Profit Q - IS THAT IMPORTANT? You can play this game until they get really wound up! Also try not to except one word answers. Another thing you can do to support is to go through the specification with them and get them to explain the different sections. Cheers!! When sitting the exam or a past paper it is most important to

READ THE QUESTION!!!!! Does the question ask for a certain amount? Does it link to the previous question? Are you answering what it asks or what you think the question says!?

LOOK FOR THE MARK SCHEME - On some questions it will tell you how the marks are given. Have you done those things?

Question Building – Questions will build in marks with the theme staying the same, DON’T GIVE UP AND JUST DO THE EASY BITS!

TGTMIM – To Get The Marks I Must – Have you considered this saying?

1 MARK PER MINUTE – If you daydream for two minutes you have lost two marks

DESIGNING- Make sure before the exam you have those ideas that are ready to go! No thinking required (just how I like it!)

Page 28: KS4 Subject Information & Support - rainford.org.ukrainford.org.uk/.../2019/09/1.-KS4-Subject-Information-Support-bookle… · - LO3 Understand postnatal checks, ... The central processing

28

ACCESSFMM – Are you writing? Are you stuck? This will help you!! Especially on the specification writing

MANUFACTURING QUESTIONS 1. Explain – Explain the stage 2. Draw – Draw what you are explaining 3. Quantity – How many has it asked you to make and have you?? (TESSALATION) 4. Could Eaton make it – Have you gone into enough detail that I could make it

WHATS THE QUESTION WORTH!? – 5 marks? 5 points made?

U IZ DED CLEVA – the best use of the English language, especially with technical terms

WOOD + METAL + PLASTIC = ZERO MARKS – when writing about materials be specific

YOU CAN DO IT – you have all the knowledge, I know you can achieve and you also know I’m always right!

ESSAY QUESTIONS 1. State your opinion 2. Give your reason 3. Give you evidence

EG – I would make this from oak (1) because it’s usually knot free (2) due to it being a hard wood (3)

THE ‘COS’ RULE – When writing have you given me a ‘because’? EG – Made using injection moulding because (‘COS) it can be mass produced

COMMON SENSE – Use it!

Useful revision tips: All students must learn the equations on the physics equation sheet. Students will be expected to recall and apply any relevant equations in both Physics papers and therefore must put some strategies in place to remember them. Try writing down the list of equations then cover them up and see how many you can remember. Make up mnemonics like 'Sid drinks tea' for speed=distance/time or make words from the terms in the equation i.e. QIT for Q=Ixt.

Learn the key terms for each topic so that you can gain easy marks for recall questions and so that you have a starting point for any questions involving application (which will be most of the questions in the paper). Start your revision notes as early as you can in year 11. As the exams get closer review these notes and then get your family to test your ability to recall them. Finally apply your knowledge by answering exam questions and marking them using a mark scheme; knowing what the examiners are looking for is also very useful.

Using the ‘Revision Strategies’:

Visualise your house In your head, take a trip around your house/bedroom. In key areas (light-switch, door handle, etc.) write a statement or question about a Belief/quote/teaching relevant to your exam paper/question. You could place sticky notes around your house to jog your memory in an exam. For example: there is a post it note above your light switch asking - What is the Sanctity of Life? What do the different Christians believe about Abortion? What is Salvation? Sanctity of life means Precious, holy and Sacred view of all human life.
