KS1 Literacy Lesson 1 – Teacher Notes

SummaryPupils will undertake various literacy activities including creating an acrostic poem. They will also create their own lyrics for a simple BBC Children in Need song to be performed at the Celebration of Champions.

Throughout the lesson, pupils will work with a Learning Partner to talk through their ideas. They will think of ideas for a class fundraising activity so they can be Champions of Change and help raise money for children across the UK.

Learning OutcomesPupils will:

Create a Pudsey or Blush acrostic poem to perform in the Celebration of Champions

Link sound and letter patterns, exploring rhyme, alliteration and other sound patterns

Recognise that the same sounds may have different spellings and that the same spellings may relate to different sounds

Identify patterns of rhythm, rhyme and sounds in poems and their effects

Consider ways that we can help to raise money for BBC Children in Need and be Change Champions

IntroductionBegin the lesson by sharing the outcomes (slide 2) and watch Video 2: Introduction to BBC Children in Need. Talk about what BBC Children in Need do and also discuss Pudsey’s position as the mascot. Ask the pupils to think about why this charity has a teddy bear for a mascot. Why does he have a spotty bandana over his eye? Why is he yellow?

Activities

Activity 1 – Mind Map (Slide 5, 6)Pupils begin by thinking of as many WOW words as they can to describe Pudsey or Blush. They can use exciting adjectives or sentences to describe their appearance, actions or personality. Pupils then complete their chosen Mind Map with a Learning Partner. Encourage the children to share their descriptions with the class and to borrow new ideas from each other.

Activity 2 – Acrostic Poem (Slide 9, 10)Remind pupils that an acrostic poem is one where the first letter of each line spells out a word going down the page. Slide 8 has an example to share with the class. Using the letters P, u, d, s, e and y, pupils think of words or sentences (depending on ability) to do with the theme of BBC Children in Need, being a Champion or Pudsey himself. Pupils can choose the Blush version as an alternative. Children work in pairs to produce a poem.

Partner Task Talk about how raising money and becoming Champions of Change helps BBC Children in Need make life better for children in the UK.

Play Video 4: Fundraising ideas from our friends (slide 13) to encourage the children to consider how they might fundraise. Remind them about the BBC Children in Need fundraising themes (Bake, Challenge, Dress-Up and Entertain) as they discuss their ideas - remember, Dress-Up is already scheduled for the Celebration of Champions. Put up slide 14 as a reminder as they talk together then ‘Snap Back’ (face the front again) and encourage children to contribute ideas to a big class discussion.

Writing Task After hearing everyone’s fantastic ideas the pupils choose their favourite(s) and write (or draw) them. Print off a copy of slide 16 for every child to use. Explain that you will collect these ‘voting papers’ in and count them up to find out which are the most popular fundraising ideas.

Whole and Group Class PlenaryExplain that next lesson children will think more about the most popular ideas. They will then choose the fundraising activity for their class. If applicable, talk about how your class fundraising will form part of the fundraising that the whole school is doing. Remind pupils about the Celebration of Champions when the whole school will celebrate what they have achieved together.

Extension Activity – Song Lyrics (Slides 20, 21, 22, 23)Hum the tune of ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ or another tune that the pupils are familiar with. Explain that they are going to make up their own words – or lyrics - for their own BBC Children in Need song. Three different writing frames have been provided for varying ability levels. Children can perform their finished songs to the class and the children can peer assess using the ‘two stars and a wish’ approach (highlighting two positives from the work and one area that needs improvement). Some songs could be performed in the Celebration of Champions.
