3Krupp hydraulic hammers:What they are and what they can do

1963 –Krupp submittedthe first ever patent appli-cation for a hydraulic per-cussion mechanism.

1967 – At the Hanover FairKrupp introduced theworld’s first machine-oper-ated hydraulic hammer –the HM 400.

1985 – Krupp launched thefirst silenced and vibrationdamped system of hydrau-

lic hammers under thename "Vibrosilenced",finally providing genuinerelief for both man andmachine.

1995 – Further improve-ment and developmentresulted in the "Vibro-silenced Plus" system foreven more effective silenc-ing and vibration damping.

1998 – The "Marathon®"wear protection system, for improving hammeravailability, was launched.

In 2000 Krupp Berco Bau-technik is introducing twoseries of high-performancehydraulic hammers –the "Eco line" and the"Marathon® line".

In 2002, Krupp BercoBautechnik was taken overby the Atlas Copco group.

As a leading innovator inthe development ofhydraulic hammers, thecompany has been settingstandards since 1963.

Today’s Atlas CopcoConstruction Tools offers:

• Highly productivehydraulic hammers

• Practice-oriented con-sulting on all aspects ofthe hammer

HM 400 with special holder at workin a quarry – first put to work in1968 and in operation until 1987,this fully operational veteran is nowon display at the German Museumin Munich.

Technology for maximum economy4

features of Krupp’s hydrau-lic hammers are illustratedin this cross-section of anHM 2500 Marathon®. It isdetails such as these thatmake our hydraulic ham-mers unbeatable and giveyou the edge over yourcompetitors.

1 Higher performance

AutoControl optimizes running charac-teristics, facilitates energy recovery andsimplifies the handling of the hammer.

2 Ready for special applications

Standard port for forced ventilation,e.g. for underwater jobs.

3 Maintenance-friendly

Service opening provides direct accessfor routine maintenance; the percus-sion mechanism can be easilyremoved from the hammer box.

4 Energy accumulation and safe start-up

Due to integrated gas piston accumu-lator in the cylinder cover

5 Automatic lubrication

With the ContiLube® II mounteddirectly on the hammer box; verysimple handling and highly economi-cal use of lubricant.

6 Easy on carrier

The elastic suspension of the percus-sion mechanism in pre-stressed elas-tic damping elements prevents dam-age to the carrier.

7 Low noise emission levels

No acoustic bridges between percus-sion mechanism and hammer box.Additional silencing optional.

8 Low recoil action reduces strain on

man and machine

Due to long piston stroke.

9 Optimum transfer of percussive energy

Due to piston and working tool havingvirtually the same diameter.

10 Long service life of hammer box

Due to use of highly wear-resistantmaterials for high-stress zones.

11 Long service life of wear bushings

Due to DustProtector facility for effec-tive protection against dust penetration.

12 Reliable working tools

By precise coordination of design, materials and heat treatment. In-house production!

Decades of experience andthe latest innovations havegone into the design ofKrupp’s hydraulic hammers, the following being justsome of the features thatensure maximum econo-my:

• Universal application• Long service life• High performance• High availability• Easy maintenance• Reduced strain

5Silencing and vibration damping for all Krupp hydraulic hammers

The diagram showsthe results of mea-surements taken allthe way around ahydraulic hammer withthe two different carriersystems. The differencesspeak for themselves.

The impact of these devel-opments is apparent onbuilding sites everywhere. To prevent noise emis-sions causing long termharm to individuals, theymust remain at the mini-mum distance at whichthe noise level is below 85dB(A).

At the 1995 Bauma show,Krupp introduced "Vibro-silenced Plus", a furtherimprovement on the Vibro-silenced" system. By opti-mizing the shape of thehammer box and sealingall openings, a furtherreduction in noise emis-sions of approx. 8 dB(A)was achieved, i.e. per-ceived noise levels wereonce again cut by half.

Krupp launched the firstsilenced and vibrationdamped hydraulic hammersback in 1985 under thename "Vibrosilenced".

This involved the use ofnon-metallic suspensionarrangements to isolatethe percussion mechanismacoustically from the ex-ternal carrier system. Thesearrangements preventednoise and vibrations ema-nating from the percussionmechanism from beingtransferred by the carriersystem to the carrier andinto the wider environment."Vibrosilenced" achieved areduction in noise emis-sions of approx. 8 dB(A) incomparison to the older, conventional carriersystems.

All Krupp hydraulic hammers are supplied with"Vibrosilenced" carrier systems – including both thelightweight series hammers with hammer holder aswell as models with a hammer box.

With Krupp’s hydraulichammers this distance is asfollows:

• Pre-1985 70 m• "Vibrosilenced" 31 m• "Vibrosilenced Plus" 10 m

A variety of options tomeet customer require-ments are available for"Eco line" hammers (seepages 10 and 11).

Hammers to suit all requirements8

Krupp has the right hy-draulic hammer for a widerange of applications, asshown in the table.

Moreover, our equipmentis designed such that spe-cial jobs can generallyalso be handled withoutthe need for extensiveconversion or accessories.

For underwater applica-

tions, additional equip-ment such as compressedair lines and safety circuitsis essential to ensure safe,damage-free operation. The corresponding con-version equipment isavailable as an optionalextra.

For tunneling applications,

the "Marathon® line"hydraulic hammers withDustProtector permit unin-terrupted operation, evenin extreme dust conditions.

Use in high-temperature

applications, such as insteel or aluminum works, does not require any retro-fitting. Where dust is ex-cessive the hammer canbe protected with a jet ofair.

When working underwateror in protected drinkingwater areas, Krupp hydrau-lic hammers can also beoperated using environ-mentally compatible fluidsand lubricants.

12 Tools you can trust

The performance, avail-ability and economy of thehydraulic hammer is heav-ily dependent on the typeand quality of the workingtool.

As a manufacturer ofhydraulic hammers it goeswithout saying that wealso produce the appropri-ate working tools – theyare inseparable and haveto be properly matched.

To ensure that the workingtools are of the requiredquality, only special steelmeeting our stringentspecifications is used.

After initial machiningusing state-of-the-art CNCproduction machines, theworking tools are giventhe required hardness by arigorously controlled heattreatment process.

Frequent interim checks are carried out at all stages ofthe manufacturing process, guaranteeing constant highquality and impressiveavailability in use.

Although it is not easy togeneralize about whichdesign, i.e. the geometri-cal shape of the tip, ismost suitable for a givenapplication, experience

has shown that, in princi-ple, only three differenttypes are required:

• Conical points designedas universal tools

• Flat chisel with a cross-cut tip

• Blunt tools without acutting edge

Other special designs areavailable on request.

Conical point

for multi-purpose use

Flat chisel

for rock-breakingand demolition work

Blunt tool

for rock-breaking and reducing oversizes

Working tool lengths

For heavy-duty hydraulic hammers from theHM 1500 upward, working tools are available inthree different lengths: compact, long, extra long. Our specalists will be pleased to advise you on theoptimal tool length for your application.

13Leading experts in attachment technology

The power for operatingthe hydraulic hammer issupplied by the carrier’shydraulic system, and wehave reached agreementswith renowned manufac-turers of hydraulic con-struction and earth-mov-ing equipment around theworld covering the attach-ment of our hydraulichammers.

As a result, many carriersnow feature a hammer-operation facility as stan-dard. Where this is not thecase, Krupp can supplyspecially designed conver-sion kits for carriers, withspecially matched valves, ensuring optimum utiliza-tion of oil delivery andoperation of the hammerand carrier.

Krupp hydraulic hammersare mounted on the carriervia an adapter or a ham-mer holder. These can besupplied for all carriertypes, the majority of themfrom stock, while new orspecial designs can beengineered and manufac-tured within just a fewdays.
