Victoria Castleberry, left, became a Life Master after earninga free trip to San Francisco at a Little Rock regional. Herteammates also won free trips -- left to right: Linda Paukune,Jay Frank and Lillie Inzina.

From a pickup teamto a gold card

From a pickup team at the regional in Little RockAR to a gold card at the San Francisco NABC -- that’sthe story of Victoria Castleberry of Houston TX.

Last May Victoria and her partner Linda Paukune, also of Houston, wanted to play in the Swiss Teamsin Little Rock. The Partnership Desk put them to-gether with Lillie Inzina of Monroe LA and her brotherJay Frank of Shreveport LA.

The alignment proved highly successful -- theywon Flight B. Even better, the tournament was pro-viding free airline tickets to an NABC of their choiceto the winners of both Flight A and Flight B.

“That’s why we’re here,” said Victoria. She waswalking on air -- she and her teammates placed in theoverall in the Swiss Teams and she needed only .51points to become a Life Master. Now she has hergold card. “I wasn’t going to go home until I could gohome as a Life Master,” she said.

Her teammate Lillie had a strong reason for want-ing success at the bridge table.

One day when she went to the bridge club, oneof the regulars said to her, “I’m surprised to see youhere -- you were so bad the last time you played.”

Well, that got her boiling mad. She made up hermind she was going to become a good bridge player -- even a director. As a matter of fact, she is now adirector at the Queens Duplicate Bridge Club in Mon-roe, and her bridge is improving day by day. She’spiling up the points and getting ready to confront andlaugh at her critic.

selves against the best possible opposition. This move also had the strong support of Kathie

Wei-Sender, the ACBL’s Ambassador of Bridge.“Don’t ever play down,” Kathie told the Juniors. “Al-ways play up. Always play against the best. It’s thebest way to learn and improve.”

The request seemed totally reasonable to the tour-nament authorities, so the team was given the dispen-sation.

On the team are Tom Carmichael, JoelWooldridge, Scott Lewis, Shannon Lipscomb, ChrisWillenken and Eric Greco. Tom and Joel played aspartners -- the other four rotated as partnerships.

In a hard-fought final yesterday, they defeatedAllan Siebert, John Zilic, Robert Carteaux, DavidAdams, Sylvia Summers and Jeff Goldsmith by 4IMPs. Their victims in the semifinal were CameronDoner, Ron Bishop, Steve Onderwyzer, Ray Grace,Randall Lazarus and Helene Schubert.

Today the Juniors are playing in the North Ameri-can Swiss, not the Reisinger -- for a very good rea-son. Sure, the Reisinger is the tougher event, but it’sboard-a-match. The World Juniors will be an IMPevent, so the Juniors want as much practice as pos-sible playing in IMP competition.

The Juniors were subsidized by the ACBL at thisNABC to help them get prepared for the world cham-pionship. As a result of cost-cutting measures, theteam will not be subsidized at the next two NABCs.Wei-Sender hopes some way can be found so thatthe Juniors can get all the training necessary to makea good showing in Hamilton. o

Losing betThe so-called gambling 3NT is self-descriptive.

Players who employ the convention are betting, in away, that their solid minor suit will take lots of tricks. On this deal from the second final session of the Non-Life Master Pairs, West lost his bet. North and South, who came out on top, were Brian Kemper of Moun-tain View and Rupert Brauch of Palo Alto, who fin-ished third in the event.

declarer was in jeopardy of losing three tricks -- aclub, a heart and a spade ruff. Even looking at all fourhands, not everyone would “see” a counter-play toattempt to avoid the ruff.

Imagine playing the contract -- and every con-tract -- where your partner and the opponents mustcooperate by verbally telling you what cards areplayed and are in dummy. Imagine the mind andthe ability that then permits you to (a) rememberevery spot card and (b) then attempt to counterthe defense.

After winning the first trick with the «A, Levinsonplayed the ©A at trick two and the ©J at trick three, pitching dummy’s 2 in an attempt to cut the defend-ers’ communication.

This theoretically prevented Gail from reachingmy hand for the spade ruff. There is a reason Gail isa many-time world champion, however. Having seenme play up the line in diamonds -- showing an oddnumber of diamonds -- she played a high diamond, forcing dummy to ruff.

When the ª4 was played to the 9, queen and ace,Gail now applied to coup de grace -- she led a fourthdiamond, creating a trump promotion for my ªJ.Levinson could have made his contract by playing theªK from dummy and exiting with a heart, preventingthe spade ruff, but he was due to succeed and make anovertrick if he put in the ª10 and it held.

As it was, of course, Levinson played the ª10 tomy jack and I was able to give Gail her hard-earnedspade ruff for down one.

All in all, it was an enjoyable bridge experiencewhere two brilliant bridge players parried each otherin an attempt to gain the upper hand.

Nickell team shooting for Reisinger four-peatBy Jody Latham

The Nick Nickell team -- fresh from their fourthconsecutive Spingold win at the Summer NABCin Miami Beach -- will try for a record fourth

consecutive victory in the Reisinger Board-a-MatchTeams starting today.

Trying for the “four-peat” will be Nick Nickell, Ra-leigh NC; Richard Freeman, Atlanta; Jeff Meckstroth,Tampa; Eric Rodwell, Naperville IL, and Bob Hammanand Bobby Wolff, Dallas.

Nickell & Co. won Reisinger titles at the Fall NABCin Seattle in 1993, in Minneapolis in 1994 and in Atlanta in1995.

Along the way, the team -- with non-playing captainEdgar Kaplan -- won the Bermuda Bowl in Beijing, China,in 1995.

History of the ReisingerThe event is contested for the Reisinger Trophy (the

Chicago Trophy until 1965). It is a six-session open team-of-four event scored by board-a-match with two qualify-ing sessions, two semifinal sessions and two final ses-sions. It was contested as a four-session championshipuntil 1966.

The event began in 1929 as the North American OpenTeam Championship and the prize was the Chicago Tro-phy, donated by the Auction Bridge Club of Chicago. (In1928, the open team competition was for the Harold S.Vanderbilt Cup.)

The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 by theReisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by the Greater NewYork Bridge Association in memory of Curt H. Reisinger.

Reisinger (1891-1964), of New York City, was a prin-cipal patron of contract bridge and the American ContractBridge League in the early years of both.

Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuser and agrandson of Busch, co-founders of the brewery fromwhich he inherited great wealth. That wealth enabled himto become a stalwart financial supporter of the game, aswell as a noted philanthropist on a far larger scale.

In the years when it was often a struggle to meet theLeague’s modestpayroll, Reisingerwas often calledupon and neverfailed to help witha loan or an out-right gift. His sup-port made possibleseveral early con-tract bridge tour-naments, clubsand books.

Among thepositions in whichhe served were di-rector of theUnited StatesBridge Associa-tion, president ofthe Greater NewYork Bridge Association and chairman of the ACBL. In1953, Reisinger was named ACBL Honorary Member.

Looking backä The only all-women’s team to win the Reisinger -

-- or any other major open team event --- was Sally Young,Jane Jaeger, Paula Ribner and Kay Rhodes.

They tied in 1947 with John Crawford, Ted Lightner,George Rapee and Sam Stayman; and Robert Appleyard,Simon Rossant, Morris Berliant and M.A. Lightman.

Young, Life Master #17, was the first woman to earnLife Master rank. Among her successes were three addi-tional wins in the Reisinger, seven in the Women’s Teams, four in the Women’s Pairs, five in the Mixed Teams andone each in the Fall Open Pairs and Fall Mixed Pairs. Shedied in 1970.

Ribner and Jaeger, both now living in Florida, are GoldLife Masters who remain active players. Jaeger was amember of the winning squad in the Grand National Teamsin 1973, its inaugural year.

Jaeger and husband Lewis were the first marriedcouple to attain Life Master rank -- #74 and #94, respec-tively -- and Lewis was a member of the winning Reisingerteam in 1934. Together, they were second in the Vanderbiltin 1956.

Jaeger recalls that the 1947 Reisinger was “pretty close. We were on pins and needles for a while.”

1947 champs -- The only all-womens team to win the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams was made up of (from left) KayRhodes, Sally Young, Paula Ribner and Jane Jaeger.

Ribner remembers that the four “were all very goodfriends. We all played with each other.”

Rhodes, a Silver Life Master who died earlier thisyear in California, recalled in a 1995 interview that thethree-way tie “had us all checking our scores, trying tofind a win.”

ä Fifty years ago, at the Fall NABC in HollywoodFL, Edith Freilich became the 13th woman to win theReisinger. Her teammates were Mitch Barnes, JohnCrawford and Al Roth.

Freilich and Roth repeated their victory in 1952. Thistime, their teammates were Harold Harkavy and TobiasStone.

ä The history of the Reisinger is dotted with back-to-back wins but no three-peats or four-peats. The teamof John Crawford, Charles Goren, Charles Solomon andSally Young won in 1937 and 1938 -- the same squad, plus B.J. Becker, also won in 1939.

ä Oswald Jacoby won his first Reisinger in 1955,playing on a team with his son Jim -- the only father-soncombination to win the event.

ä Jacoby’s second Reisinger win came in 1983 whenhe was invited to join the team of Edgar Kaplan, NormanKay, Richard Pavlicek and Bill Root.

Kaplan recalled that Jacoby had been a very goodfriend to all of the group. “When I was a young man, heplayed a lot with me. Jake was very good to me when Iwas a kid. We’ve been friends a long time and I’ve playedon teams with him before, but I hadn’t played as a partnerwith Ozzie in 30 years.”

Jacoby was battling cancer but he was a vital part ofthe team effort that won the Reisinger.

On this deal, Jacoby was plus 450 at his table whilePavlicek-Root scored plus 100 at the other table. Pavlicekdoubled 4« and they beat the contract one trick.

Jacoby played 4« undoubled and made five withoutany warning about the trump suit.

ä John Crawford holds the record for most Reisingerwins with 10. His victories spanned four decades: 1937,1938, 1939, 1942, 1946, 1947, 1953, 1954, 1956 and1961.

ä Helen Sobel and Sally Young share the record formost Reisinger wins by women with four.

ä Sobel was the last woman to win the Reisinger --her victory came in 1957.

ä A multi-national team won in 1987. Team mem-bers included Zia, Jaggy Shivdasani, Billy Cohen and RonSmith.

Said Zia: “The best thing about this was that we hada black (Smith), a Jew (Cohen, who is a Canadian citi-zen), an Indian (Shivdasani) and a Pakistani (Zia) playingtogether.” Zia is a Muslim and Shivdasani is a Hindu.

“It’s good to show how bridge can bring togetherpeople from such different backgrounds,” he added. “Itjust shows a special magic about the game of bridge.”

ä A multi-national team won again in 1989. Zia wasagain on the team which included Sam Lev, Israel; MichaelRosenberg, U.S. but formerly of Scotland; Chris Compton,U.S., and Mark Molson, Canada.

ä The record margin of victory in the Reisinger -- 10full boards -- was set in 1966 by Kaplan, Kay, RobertJordan and Arthur Robinson.

ä A handful of ACBL presidents and members of theBoard of Directors have won the Reisinger: CharlesSolomon, Jeff Glick, Waldemar von Zedtwitz, Bobby Wolff,Lew Mathe, Peter Leventritt, John Gerber, Ira Corn, DonOakie and Edgar Kaplan.Curt Reisinger

Betty Richard, who were in charge of volunteers; JudyLowe, Intermediate/Novice chairperson; Ron Zucker, who handled the registration desk; Barbara Prior, part-nerships, and Jackie Cornfoot, who did the restaurantguide and has worked to provide information and setup tours.

“They have really knocked themselves crazy,”McIntosh said. “For example, our I/N games are run-ning at 10% of total attendance. Judy has done anoutstanding job.”

McIntosh also credited the bridge players of Dis-trict 21 for supporting the NABC. “At these tourna-ments, 60% of the attendance usually comes fromthe area. We’ve been promoting the tournament tothe players of the district for a year and a half, andthat has paid off.”

McIntosh said he is proud of the work done by com-mittee members and volunteers -- some of whom havecome to help out even when they weren’t scheduled to.

All the plans, he said, were made with the play-ers in mind. For example, he said, the committee de-cided not to spend large sums of money on after-game entertainment because it didn’t make sense ina town like San Francisco, where “there’s too muchgoing on.”

Instead, organizers decided to try to give some-thing away each session. Giveaways have includedbananas, raisins, raisin crunch and cookies. Only onesession so far has been missed.

“We’ve found that bridge players love to eat,”McIntosh said. “Give them some food and they’ll behappy.” Tonight’s post-game snack, he said, will bebaked potatoes. On Saturday night, the snack will behot dogs.

McIntosh, an independent sales representative, livesin Gilroy, renowned as the garlic capital of the world. One of the Friday giveaways, he said, will be garlic.

The NABC chairman said he has also beenpleased with the staff of the Marriott, “who have beenoutstanding to work with.”

Looking forward to the final three days, McIn-tosh said the tournament needs to average only about500 tables a session to break the 1990 record. “Witha nice weekend we could be close to 14,000 tables.”

McIntosh said the work of the 17 units withinDistrict 21, combined with the enthusiasm of the play-ers, made for a winning combination. “We have goodattendance at the regionals in this district,” he said.“We anticipated that the players would be here andthey haven’t let us down.” o

ing, and he believes the future of the game is brightas long as the leadership maintains what he considersthe proper focus.

“I’ve been preaching for 10 years that we havemisplaced our emphasis on the expert game at theexpense of the recreational players,” Schoder said.“The recreational players are the meat and potatoesof this organization, and we need to find a way tosatisfy both sides.”

Schoder predicts that China will emerge as adominant power in bridge in the near future. InRhodes, he observed, there were teams from the FarEast in the open and women’s finals of the WorldTeam Olympiad -- China in the women’s and Indone-sia in the open.

Other countries, he said, are ahead of the U.S. incash-prize tournaments, which serve the dual purposeof helping to promote the game and creating a placefor top experts to play.

Looking over the crop of newer tournament di-rectors, Schoder said he is impressed with what he’sseen. “We’ve made giant steps in upgrading the qual-ity of directors. The new ones are much more dedi-cated and are equipped with the knowledge and abili-ties they need. I’m proud of a bunch of them.”

Schoder, who will turn 65 in January, said he willdirect about 100 sessions next year, mostly in Florida.

When he’s not traveling, however, he and Budwill be playing bridge and a lot of golf. “Bud has be-come a golf nut,” he said. He will also make good useof his 23-foot fishing boat, Director!

Retirement, he noted, doesn’t mean inactivity. SaidSchoder: “I’ll be a young 65.” o

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling. The Committee Decision: The Committee as-

sessed a one-quarter board procedural penalty againstE/W for inadequate disclosure and failing to have twoidentical convention cards. The Committee allowedthe table result (3« doubled down two, plus 500 for E/W) to stand. The N/S deposit was returned.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass Pass

1ª 1NT 2« 2NT (1)Pass 3 Pass 3NTAll Pass(1) Alerted; puppet to 3The Facts: 3 NT by North made three, plus 600

for N/S. South intended 2NT as natural; North thoughtit was a puppet to 3. The Director ruled that Southhad unauthorized information and that passing 3¨ wasa logical alternative. The Director changed the con-tract to 3 by North down two, plus 200 for E/W.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director ’s rul-ing, contending that South had little choice but to bid3NT over 3 since at BAM scoring, 3 was unlikelyto be to play on this auction, even if North had notAlerted 2NT. South stated that he realized at the pointhis partner Alerted that it was likely his 2NT bid hadbeen construed as Lebensohl. North stated that rea-sonable defense would have defeated 3NT, suggest-ing that the damage to E/W was self-inflicted. Southstated that he had intended 2NT as natural and thatN/S had played together only three times previouslyand not at all in the past 15 months.

The Committee Decision: The Committeeagreed with the Director that a 3¨ bid with no Alertfrom North would have expressed an interest in play-

ing a club partscore rather than anotrump game. Thus, North had cho-sen from among logical alternatives(passing and bidding on) the one thatcould reasonably have been suggestedby the unauthorized information (theAlert). Pursuant to Law 12C2, theCommittee canceled South’s 3NT bidand assigned to N/S the score for 3¨by North down two, plus 200 for E/W(the most unfavorable result that wasat all probable). The Committee re-jected the notion that E/W had madean egregious error in defense, which

would have deprived them of the right to redress dueto their own fault. 3NT cannot be beaten after thelead of the K, a reasonable lead that was made atthis and lots of other tables.

Again, pursuant to Law 12C2, E/W were assignedthe same score (3 by North down two, plus 200 forE/W), the most favorable result at all likely had theinfraction not occurred,

or (d) a good hand with spades. West had shown (withhis 2« bid) type (d) a good hand with spades.

The Facts: 4« by West made four, plus 620 forE/W. 2« was explained by East as showing spadesand clubs. The explanation was corrected by Westprior to the opening lead (note (5) above). The Direc-tor was called and ruled that East’s explanation hadprovided unauthorized information to West, and thatpassing 3 was a logical alternative to bidding 3«.The Director changed the contract to 3¨ by East downtwo, plus 200 for N/S.

The Appeal: Due to the lateness of the hour,West was the only player to appear before the Com-mittee. The facts were not in dispute. E/W allegedthat 3« was the normal action for West over 3¨, withor without the misexplanation.

The Committee Decision: The Committee de-cided that there was unauthorized information avail-able to West after the explanation of the 2« bid. TheCommittee decided that although the 3« bid was notan egregious action, a significant number of West’speers (15%-25%) would seriously consider passing. Therefore, pass was a logical alternative and pursu-ant to Law 12C2, the Committee changed the con-tract to 3 by East down two, plus 200 for N/S andassigned this result to both pairs.

The Appeal: N/S appealed onthe grounds that 5© was an attemptto elicit a 6© cuebid from North af-ter which South intended to bid agrand slam. South estimated thebreak in tempo to be two seconds,North called it a “slight hitch”, andWest (the only member of her part-nership present) declined to estimatethe length of the break in tempoother than to note it qualified as abreak in tempo. Asked why hechose 5© instead of 4NT (Blackwood), South said, “Imade a bad bid.” The Committee discovered thatNorth had about 1400 masterpoints and South hadabout 2200 masterpoints.

The Committee Decision: The Committee ruledthat having created a trap for his partner by bidding5©, South was caught in it after the break in tempo.Noting that it could construct several hands in whichthe small slam would hinge on a trump finesse thatwas odds on to lose, the Committee ruled that North’sbreak in tempo had converted a 70% decision into a
