Katherine Ewing, President Unit 505 Board of Directors
February is one of my favorite months. It is a time to share your love with those you care about. Many of us love bridge and it is a time to say thank you to all who enjoy playing this game and sharing its ups and downs with us.
Our UNIT GAME was held on Sunday, January 21st. Overall winners were: 1. Ann McClelland/Marvin Arnold 2. Dick Jones/Ted Muller 3. Betty and Ben Miller
It was a pot luck and a big thank you to all who brought the delicious food.
299’rs—A reminder to 299er’s and fewer: THOSE WHO HAVE LESS THAN 300 POINTS PLEASE ATTEND THE UNIT GAMES. ONLY 3 TABLES ARE NECESSARY TO PLAY IN YOUR OWN SECTION AND IT WILL BE RATED AT THE UNIT LEVEL FOR POINTS.
ANNUAL AWARDS FEBRUARY 18—The Unit Game on February 18th will include the Annual Aces of Clubs and Mini-McKenney Awards plus a Swiss Team game at SBC. Please get your team together and make reservations. See the flyer on page 5. It is so nice to acknowledge the winners of these races for the last year. Come enjoy good food, card playing and each other.
MAY SECTIONAL—A reminder that our May Sectional will be held at the Orangevale Community Center. We will be back there for the rest of this year. I hope we will get great attendance or we may have to cut back on the number of Unit Sectionals. Please encourage your friends and remind all of your out of town bridge friends to attend our wonderful Sectionals.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all, see you at the bridge table! Katherine Ewing

Old Rules for Opening 1NT are Toast by Clark Muldavin
The Bridge World (BW) has a 2009 bidding question focusing on how requirements for opening 1NT are becoming looser and looser. Opening 1NT instead of a minor has become even more acceptable since 2009. With this hand at matchpoints:
64-85-AK73-AKJ95
the BW expert panel voted as follows: 1C=12/27 (Kit Woolsey)
1D=10/27 (Larry Cohen) and 1NT=5/27 (Mike Passel)
Dave Berkowitz voted for 1D, but said “I am too old for 1NT”. Joe Grue voted for 1C but he says, “Everyone knows I would really open 1NT.” Ira Rubin Voted for 1C, but says, "1NT is moronic, but actions like that have become quite popular.” The ACBL.org website has several related articles on bidding 1 NT. Click the link above for further information. Editor

Swiss Teams Events by Dave Willmott
Unit 505 Tournament Chair
The Unit 505 Board would like to encourage the newer players and Non Life Masters to play in the upcoming Swiss team events. These events are 6 or 7 board matches for 4 rounds : Sunday February 11th NLM Swiss teams at the Sacramento Bridge Center at 10:30 Sunday February 18th Unit 505 Mini McKenney / Ace of Clubs Awards at the Sacramento Bridge Center at Noon. If 4 teams of 299ers show up you can have your own game. Sunday May 6th Unit 505 Sectional Swiss teams at the Orangevale Community Center at 10:30. There is a special one session event or you can play in a 2 session event. In order to score any points you only have to beat one pair in a 4 or 7 match event. The strategy is a little different from pair games and is similar to home style bridge: Bid your marginal games Don’t double the opponents into game unless you KNOW you can set it and
they have NO safe place to run to. Don’t over compete for a part score which can result in a “double minus”. Let
them play 1 club or 1 diamond passed out because they may find a better place to play or wake partner up.
-
Try to set the opponents even if it costs a trick. One trick is one IMP. A game is 10 IMPS or more.
Make your game safely, overtricks don’t matter much Bid your small slams, but don’t bid 7 unless you can count to 13. Making 6H or 6NT is a tie since a 10 point difference gives you 0 IMPS Scoring is based upon an IMP scale which can be found on your score cards. We will have people to help you score if you are unfamiliar and we will have a special handout sheet at the table to assist you. We are also encouraging the clubs to have practice Swiss Team Events. Basically since this is a team event you add your score made at your table to your partner’s score at the other table. If you have a plus score you won that hand and convert the score to IMPS and if you have a minus score you have a minus IMP score. The IMP scores for all the boards are added and if you have a plus IMP score you won the round and it counts as one win. One win will result in awarding you some points. The director records the score and converts to Victory Points. You don’t have to worry about that as it is done for you. After round one pairs are matched according to their results. Winners play winners and losers play losers, etc. At the end of the matches the team with the most Victory Points wins the tournament. But usually 90% or more of the teams will score some points. At a later time we will discuss Knock Outs at the Regionals which are head to head contests. Win 2 24 board matches in a row and you will earn lots of gold points.

You can go to any of these instructors for expert answers to your questions. We are fortunate at SBC to have so many instructors and more fortunate to have such nice players!
Sacramento Bridge Center has three lesson groups going on right now. There are at least fifty-five eager players taking the three classes. We will also be starting Bidding in the 21st Century on the 13th of Feb, 10:00am.
If you know anyone who is looking for beginner lessons let one of the instructors know.
This is the Play of the Hand class taught by Jim Bowman. This is Jim’s first class and already the people are telling me how good they think Jim is. He has a great sense of humor and is very dedicated in his teaching style. In this class the students learn how to plan the play of the hand through finessing, promoting an outside suit, using their trump wisely, planning their play and many more ideas. He has 18 in the class.
Sam Sandusky has a class on Friday morning dealing with Competitive Bidding. Sam runs several classes per year structured with conversation, a particular problem, and then solving the problem. Each class will have a different subject. Sam has a good sixteen people who follow each of his classes. He especially likes dealing with the intermediate players.
The back corners!
21 players for this class.

Charity Games—299’r Games—Classes
This is possible because these are Charity Games. The director donates $4 per table to an ACBL designated charity.
The Saturday noon game now has 2 sections. Joy O’Dell and John Hughes have instituted a 299er game. The section is directed by John Hughes, and Joy O’Dell gives a 30-40 minute lecture ahead of time at 11 am.
Ali Topcú directs the Open section. Awards in the Open are based on the total number of tables in the Open and the 299er sections.

OSMO OTRA! Travels with Mary and Terri!
2 members of Team OSMO, with wannabe men’s auxiliary recruits Mike and Andrew from New York Mary and Teri, together with Mike and Andrew, came in 2nd in the Sunday A/X Swiss in the Tarrytown (New York) regional. But that’s not the big news: the big news is that TerI became a sapphire life master in that event, earning her 3500th masterpoint. Go, Teri! To celebrate, Mary and Teri went to New York City where they had the thrill of playing in the largest club in the country at Honors Bridge Club - reservation required. The club occupies not one but
two (presumably very expensive) floors of a building in central Manhattan near Central Park. The 0-750 players have their own separate floor. Competing in a club game against the likes of August Boehm (see Bridge Bulletin, p. 54, Boehm on Bridge), Judi Radin, Joel Wooldridge, Irina Levitina, Barry Rigal, and Sandra Rimstedt, was certainly a treat. The afternoon game had 40 tables divided into open, handicapped, and 0-750 sections. The lunch, which was served BEFORE (not during) the game, was amazing. A full-time paid kitchen staff prepares and serves an enormous buffet with healthy (and not) options, included in the $32 bridge fee, as are all drinks (coffee, tea, soda, even MILK!). The players were welcoming and friendly. A portion of the playing area:

The following day the two walked through Central Park to play at Cavendish Bridge Club, a smaller and cozier game with 15 1/2 tables. More welcoming and friendly players with lunch (not as grand) again before the game included in the $27 bridge fee.
Prior to Tarrytown, Mary and Dave Vidaver (bona fide OSMO men’s auxiliary member) had a wonderful time at the Albuquerque regional. The ratio of bridge pros to non-pros was extraordinary; turns out there was no other regional going on that same week elsewhere in the country. Albuquerque is a wonderful place to visit, with an interesting Old Town plus some interesting museums.
Mary and Dave skipped bridge one day in order to go to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, well worth the visit. Prior to the start of the tournament, they spent a couple of days in Santa Fe, enjoying the Old Town there as well as the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the New Mexico Museum of history. And prior to Albuquerque, there were oodles of District 21 players participating in the tournament at Monterey. How fun is that! Many District 21 players made fine showings at the tournament.
We all recognized our very own wonderful Sally Wheeler-Valine, who has made hospitality hours an absolute delight for so many years, and is now retiring from that responsibility. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Sally! Barbara Wheeler makes it easy to not wait around for results at tournaments. She always knows how players have done even before they find out themselves.
