Welcome pharmacy students to a new year with WAPSA. 2012 promises to be a outstanding year follow- ing the efforts of the past two years. There will be all the events you've grown to know and love plus some exciting new inclusions. On behalf of the entire committee I can say we're so excited for the year ahead, especially after the promising signs so far. Our first event of the year, O-Show, was sold out; a testament to the workings of the new committee. The First year memberships are going strong and inter-year friendships seem to be forged. This is all following winning the very coveted Les Cashen trophy at congress for best branch on congress. So what is the big deal about WAPSA? Well the more involvement and memberships we get from YOU , the students, the more we can give back in terms of bigger and better education and social events, more benefits, more discounts and better representation. I urge students to keep up the enthusiasm throughout the year, it has been great so far. For those who missed out on an O-Show ticket, coming up is Charity Cup, raising money for the Day of Difference Foun- dation. I strongly recommend everyone getting involved with this event. It is fun while being for such a good cause. There is plenty of information in the pages ahead so have a bit of a read and see what it's all about. This event has grown to become not only a big event on the NAPSA calendar but a point of pride within the WAPSA community. In the last three years we have won the innovation trophy twice and the overall trophy once. Last year we raised over $3000; 25% of the total raised by all NAPSA branches. Throughout the year there will be all the other WAPSA events including student Vs staff soccer, cocktail party, education courses, pub crawl and the stand-out event the gala ball. Also don't forget the WAPSA student excellence award which is in its inaugural year. All fourth year bachelor and second year GEM's should be nominating for this, NO EXCUSES! For those of you wondering how or why to get involved drop past the common room, buy a soft drink and some lollies, wind down from your lectures, take a seat and talk to one of the committee members or read the pamphlets available. The committee members are always more than happy to have a chat with you about WAPSA or pharmacy in general. REMEMBER - your friendly year reps are there to hear and take note of your opinions as well as selling tickets for events. Use them as your resource for all things WAPSA. Cheers to a great year! Welcome pharmacy students to a new year with WAPSA. 2012 promises to be a outstanding year follow-

ing the efforts of the past two years. There will be all the events you've grown to know and love plus

some exciting new inclusions.

On behalf of the entire committee I can say we're so excited for the year ahead, especially after the

promising signs so far. Our first event of the year, O-Show, was sold out; a testament to the workings of

the new committee. The First year memberships are going strong and inter-year friendships seem to be

forged. This is all following winning the very coveted Les Cashen trophy at congress for best branch on

congress.

So what is the big deal about WAPSA? Well the more involvement and memberships we get from YOU , the students, the more we can give back in terms of bigger and better education and social events, more benefits, more discounts and better representation. I urge students to keep up the enthusiasm throughout the year, it has been great so far. For those who missed out on an O-Show ticket, coming up is Charity Cup, raising money for the Day of Difference Foun-dation. I strongly recommend everyone getting involved with this event. It is fun while being for such a good cause. There is plenty of information in the pages ahead so have a bit of a read and see what it's all about. Your 2012 Committee WAPSA's Annual General Meeting was held on the 5th of March, and this year's was an interesting one! There were two very strong contenders going for the position of President, and it continued to be an exciting night of voting and discussing, as there were a few other positions that attracted more than one nominee. We ended the night with a promising committee with some new faces as well as some old ones. This year is sure to be an eventful one, with many enthusiastic committee members on board. Congratulations to those who got elected and a huge thank you to all that had attended and contributed in the AGM.

The first event of the year just flew by! O-show was a sell out and a great success! New friends were made, new and interesting dance moves formed and many laughs were had. The delicious pizzas, great music and endless supply of drinks contributed to a really fun night. With a fantastic turn out from all years, this year looks very promising in terms of social events, and even if you did miss out on O-show I hope to see many of you later on in the year. Some of the events to come include cocktail party, WAPSA gala ball and the pub crawl. If you have any ideas for any of these events, please let me know and together we can make this year the greatest yet. Good luck for the rest of the year and I’ll see you at the next WAPSA event!

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR Hey guys I’m Mirna your KOOROC editor. I hope you are all getting back in to the swing of university life.

Nothing quite says ‘welcome back’ than 8am lectures and 6pm finishes (for second years anyway) long pants

on lab days in summer and triturating till you bleed (if this happens you’re doing it wrong).

However, there is so much to look forward to this year from education to social events WAPSA will definitely

keep you busy! We’ve also decided to try out some new stuff in KOOROC where you can now access it easier

on your phone through our QR CODE enabled feature. For all you smart kids with your smart phones all you

have to do is download the app and take a picture which will take you straight to the WAPSA website. How

easy is that for all you tree huggers!

-That’s all for now! Xoxo Mirna

WAPSA NETBALL

Seeing as the world is going to end at some stage this year, two extremely clever women decided that 2012 was the perfect opportunity to satisfy our undying urge for ball sports and lycra. Cue WAPSA netball. As many of you are aware of, or are about to learn, Pharmacy is a stressful yet rewarding degree that re-quires a bazillion contact hours. This can definitely impact your social life, and unfortunately your once peak physique. The Beta Blockers, as we are infamously known as, are a team of students from second, third and fourth year streams of Pharmacy who are dedicated to obtaining Miranda Kerr's banging bod. The season has just started and our first two games have been a success. Not only did we have seven play-ers on the court (thumbs up), we also proved that us Pharmacy kids have got some 'game' outside of the compounding labs. From Bec's athletic spurt as centre, to the optimistic passes from Matt "Don't call me Matthew" Schmidt and the deadly accurate goal shooting from duo Clarkey and Lubckey, we showed Cur-tin that the Beta Blockers are a force to be reckoned with.** We play every Tuesday night at Curtin Stadium, so if you're interested in playing or you want to come down and support the penultimate premiers of mixed netball, feel free to contact me :)

**We actually lost. But only by two goals. WIN.

CATCHING UP WITH OUR FRIENDS FROM UWA The beginning of 2012 and the start of another year of pharmacy over at UWA. So far, we have already been super busy and definitely starting to feel the grind of another year. Both the first and second years are well and truly back into the swing of things, having already been back at work since early January.

The first years have just finished their community pharmacy placements and the second years have just fin-ished their hospital pharmacy rotations. These have been a fantastic experience and a great opportunity for learning. However, it has also been great to be back on campus with familiar faces again.

For the second years, the light at the end of the tunnel draws near. We have 3 more months before we finish our final exams and are off to join the big, wide world. As such, we are all scrambling to find the right com-munity or hospital pharmacy for us to begin out internship year in- not an easy task! We are also occupied in our research projects. Although a great experience, I think I echo the sentiments of all the second years when I say I’ve never worked so hard in my life!

The first years are beginning the gruelling middle year of the UWA pharmacy program. They have already started their units with the medicine students and are feeling the weight of studying 5 units. But just like we were told, “others have done it, so you will too (or repeat and try again!)”.

INTERVIEW WITH HANI AL-SALAMI Professor Hani Al Salami is a lecturer in school of pharmacy here at Curtin University. Sally Punyanitya, first year pharmacy rep caught up with him last friday to find out a little bit more about his life. SP: What did you study in University and where?

HS: I studied at Otago University in New Zealand where I completed my diploma and bachelor of pharmacy,

as well as my PhD. I also worked at McGill University in Canada.

SP: Why did you choose to lecture at Curtin University?

HS: I choose to lecture at Curtin because I was looking for something close to New Zealand (my home coun-

try) and it was the first offer which came up. I also like the staff here and thought they were professional and

approachable.

SP: Why did you choose to be a lecturer?

HS: I wanted to be a lecturer because I like interacting with students and teaching things relevant to their

field, so that the students won’t fall asleep.

SP: What were your goals when you were a University Student?

HS: As a student I wanted to do the best I could in pharmacy and eventually own my own one. I always

wanted to be a pharmacist because it is a good mix of professionalism business and people care; also there

are openings in academia.

SP: If you weren’t a lecturer or involved in research, what would you be?

HS: I would be a personal trainer, I love exercise of all types.

SP: What Advice would you give to students?

HS: To enjoy what they are doing, you should be able to imagine a future in that career. I would advise them

not to just aim for a ‘pass’ but to aim for perfection and try to achieve 100%. Also to pay attention in lec-

tures!
