premeditated wrongdoings.

Salman puts in a lot of heart in his act and

his frivolous nonchalance never makes the

drama go overboard.

trainer Satyajit 'Satya' Chaurasia, says Aamir

Khan used to get tired exercising and some-

times even used to shriek in pain and cry

doing the stomach crunches, but he did not

skip a single day. Every week his body used

to show results and that kept him going.

Aamir admits it was difficult to portray a

character who talks more with his eyes than

his mouth. Normally a film title is based on the

name of a hero or heroine.

them, especially Anjali, in living away from

ditional sari and performs the duties of a

bat sequence in her upcoming slick thriller

"Race 2".

In the film, Jacqueline will be seen per-

forming a fencing sequence using swords

and knives, with Saif Ali

would be a sportsman but I injured myself.

I was under observation for seven to eight

days and bedridden for a month and a half.

I had hurt my lower back and I felt very

bad. For six to eight months, I was ex-

tremely depressed."

"My mom said 'Try and do something in

the evening to fill your space'. I started

doing this play called 'Annie Get Your Gun'

at Lady Shriram College - one of the at-

tractions being that it was a girl's college

and I was one of the few guys who was

chosen to act there - eight boys and 80

girls."

After winning praise for her debut single “In

my city”, Priyanka Chopra has now sung

in electronic dance music (EDM) track “Erase”.

“Erase” is composed by a band named The

Chainsmokers, which comprises producer

Andrew Winter and disc jockey (DJ) Alex Pall.

The duo heard Priyanka’s work and offered

her to team up with them.

Priyanka thanks her “In my city” team, who

gave her time to work with the duo.

“Music for me has been a very organic pro-

Actress Sonam Kapoor admits that her

films have not "done well" but critics al-

ways supported her work and that is why

she is still part of the Hindi film industry.

The 27-year-old started her career with

2007 film "Saawariya" and went on to do

movies like "Aisha","Mausam" and "Players",

which failed to set the cash registers ring-

ing at the box office. However, the actress

feels her work was always appreciated by

critics.

"Honestly, my films have not done very

well but I am in the industry because of the

critics. They have always liked me...,"

Sonam said at the launch of film critic Anna

MM Vetticad's book "The Adventures of An

Intrepid Film Critic."

Sonam feels filmmakers need critics and

vice-versa. "I honestly feel that we need

each other. We need somebody there. You

need a referee at the end of the day.”

Bipasha Basu, the sexy, feisty actress who

is best known for being the epitome of

desire on-screen, has spoken out about the

double standards in Bollywood.

Bips revealed what she thought about the

roles female actresses get and then some, in

a recent and candid interview.

"In Bollywood, the opportunities for fe-

male actresses are very minimum. There's

not much choice for us except to be safe

and look pretty and

do some nice

dance numbers.

As a one off,

you will get a film,

which will be talked

about in the context

that 'Oh! women are get-

ting into trend now! It's go-

ing to be such a great time

for female actresses'. The

thing it is never."

THE GREAT BANYANTREE OF INDIAN CINEMA

Also known as The Showman, actor,

producer and director Raj Kapoor was

born on 14th December. He was indus-

trious, inventive, self-motivated and diligent to

handle any assignment with utmost ease.

The flaw of acting impetuously was in his

genes. At times, a bit arrogant but he was

most modest about achieving the goal. Enjoy-

ing every success in grand imperial style

was as per his name Raj i.e. Royal.

The eldest son of great Prithvi Raj Kapoor-

the Bollywood-e-Azam - Raj made clear his

intention very early. The father nodded but

warned him to start from ABC. Not having an

academic degree to his credit, Raj started

from floor cleaning, pulling the trolley, clap-

boy, lab assistant to get thorough knowledge

of each and every aspect of film making and

gradually, he mastered this vast art.

Raj believed that public goes to cinema to

be entertained and not for social, religious

or political sermons. Yet he tried his best to

address burning social issues and also

succeeded in influencing people.

At only 23, he released his first film Aag

- a low budget project. The emotional integ-

rity and technical sensitivity was highly

appreciated by one and all. Raj was extra

careful for the story, casting, entertainment,

photography, technical details, lyrics, music,

choreography and above all, the message to

pubic.

Can you believe that RK had an ambition to

become music director! He sang for his films

Chitchore, Jail-Yatra and Chittaur Vijay. Actu-

ally RC Boral, his father's friend inspired him. In

Matunga-Bombay, he joined Narayan Rao

the same theme - a simple man in big, clever

and cruel world. Commercially, the film did not

fare well at the box office. But it won the

Grand Prix in 1952.

His jis desh mein ganga behti hai-1960 for

theme had Gandhian pacifist Vinoba Bhave's

philosophy that dacoits be persuaded to

surrender and join the mainstream of society

for rehabilitation. The film created the history

of success. The magnificent line from Mukesh

"Aa ub laut chalein" worked wonders. His film

Sangam-64 shot at various locations of Lon-

don, Paris and Switzerland also was a mas-

terpiece. The film won seven awards, almost

in every field. His other movies like Prem Rog,

Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Dharam Karam

though did not fare well but were quite

successful conveying a social message along

with the specialty of Raj Kapoor.

After the failure of Mara Naam

Joker, critics and opponents tried to

write off RK who really felt deceived

and shattered. To introduce his sec-

ond son Rishi, he invented a wonderful

love story and Bobby was presented in

1973 with another new face, Dimple.

The pair and the film proved a

Brahmastra and silenced the critics for-

ever. It was a mega hit and its songs

are still in circulation today.

RK confessed that great singers

Lata, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Rafi not

only sang immortal numbers for his

films but every one of them taught

him a lot about the great art of music.

Raj had special regards for Mukesh who ren-

dered maximum melodies for him. He used to

say "Mukesh is my voice, my soul.' Ek din bik

jayega maati ke mol, jag mein reh jayenge

pyare tere bol" How realistic? His other

associates were lyricists Shailendra, Hasrat

Jaipuri, music directors Shankar-Jaikishan and

Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Raj Kapoor's films were equally popular in

Russia. RK's song 'Mera joota hai Japani', is

known to most film lovers of Russia. As and

when RK's film is exhibited there, it draws

packed houses.

three years. Music director Anil Biswas helped

him a lot.

A critic has observed "RK poured every

ounce of his creative energy into music of

his films. He worked like an architect build-

ing his film on the foundation of story, lyrics-

music, composer and message. The result -

each song from his films is alive even after

RK's next venture was Barsaat-1949, a

blockbuster. What made this movie so popu-

lar was its youthful exuberance and open

attitude to sex + music. In 1952, he made his

most fateful decision and announced Awara

(written by KA Abbas.) The crux of the

project was a classic confrontation of fa-

ther and son. It conveyed it is the circum-

stances which make the man and not not the

birth. This film turned out to be an astonish-

ing mix of melodrama and romance. It was

applauded not only in India but even in

China, Russia, Turkey, Iran and Middle East.

Among all the melodies, the title song "Awara

Hoon" stands out and is hummed even today.

cently aged 89. He was a film critic, scholar,

Satyajit Ray and Harisadhan Dasgupta. Her

grandmother Supriya Dasgupta is a cousin of legendary modern Bengali

poet Jibanananda Das.

Konkona's father, Mukul Sharma, is a science writer and journalist.

She was married to actor Ranvir Shorey on 3 September 2010 and

they have a son called Haroon Shorey, born on March 15, 2011.

Lucknow witnesses a lot of criminal activi-

ties daily and kidnapping, rape and murders

are done in broad daylight.

The main antagonist/villain is the evil goon

turned politician Baccha Bhaiyya. He is a

strong contender for the upcoming elections

and Chulbul Pandey sabotages his political

image by revealing his immoral activities to

the public, media and police force and he is

imprisoned. This angers the villains' two

brothers who kidnap Chulbul's son and tor-

ture him. Meanwhile, the main antagonist

comes out from prison.

In Dabangg 2, Chulbul also tries to strengthen

his family ties with his father and brother. And

romance his newly wed wife. And remain

'Dabangg' (fearless) no

matter what.

Insiders say, "This is a

first time that Salman is

doing a sequel and if you

look at his line up ahead,

he hasn't even proposed

on when he would start

filming his next. He is so

conscious of the fact that

'Dabangg 2' is a major film

for him and there is a defi-

Ajay Devgn's Diwali

gamble didn't quite

pay off this time. A film

like 'Son of Sardar'

can work on two

counts, either on the

merit of star power or

on the quantity/qual-

ity of amusing gim-

micks that the makers

can pack in. How-

ever, with a flimsy plot

and inadequate

humour, the story fails to

take off.

Simply put, it is a bloody re-

venge saga where Jassi (Ajay

Devgn) and Billu (Sanjay Dutt) be-

long to the opposite camps. Jassi

comes to India to sell off an ancestral prop-

erty and wants nothing to do with the existing

family hostility but the Sandhus are still waiting to

settle the score. Predictably he falls in love with Sukh

(Sonakshi), the girl from the enemy camp and he must now, not only

fight for his life but also his love.

Jassi discovers that the only way to save himself is to remain a guest

in the Sandhu household and thus, follows tedious hide-and-seek se-

quences where the Sardar tries to pull off one daft trick after the other to

avoid the talwar.

Two-time National Award winner Tabu stars in Oscarwinner Ang Lee's Life Of Pi. Excerpts from an interview:Aren't you fortunate to be a part of mainstream Hollywood?

Frankly, my head can never be bloated. It's a matter of pride for me

to do things that have such a reach. Films that will be remembered,

not because I'm in them, but because as films, they'll always be

remembered. Cinema will always remember Life Of Pi. I'm extremely

fortunate to have got all these platforms, all these films, to have

worked with people who have contributed to my growth personally

and professionally.

Are you flattered that Ang said 'Tabu is sublime'?

It is a huge honour for me, especially, because it is coming from

Ang. When you receive a compliment from someone of his stature

and experience, it feels terrific. Ang is someone whose films I have

been enamoured by. I'm very fortunate that he thought of me for a

role, sitting in another part of the world.

Because of your repertoire of work, there are many expec-

tations to be met...

You can't meet each and every expectation. Being choosy about

the work I do is not a conscious thing. I'm someone who will not

greenlight a project unless I'm fully convinced that there is something

for me to take back. It can be a big amount of money, or it can be the

role and director that I'm kicked about. If I end up liking the 10 films that

are offered to me in a year, I may do all 10. However, if I like only one

film, in say three years, then I will settle for that one.

A lot of people say you are a recluse

I must say, it unnerves me when I hear such things. But, I also feel

that if people want to see more of me, then I must have done some-

thing right. Whenever I step out, people ask accusingly, 'why don't

you do more films?' At least, they are not saying, 'Tabu, abhi aap

shaadi kar ke jao'. They are saying even if you get married, please

continue to work.

Shaadi, relationships?

I am in a good space

now to be in a relation-

ship. I know my positives

and negatives. I know

what makes me happy or

sad. After a certain level

of maturity, the scope for

trial and error is over.

Earlier, I was perhaps not

in a space to be in rela-

tionships; and that is why

they didn't work. But

now, the fears and ap-

prehensions have gone.

It is like jo hoga dekha

jayega.

Season 2 of Live My Life was kick started by none other than

Bollywood heart throb Hrithik Roshan who offered Kolkata based,

young Jyoti Vishwakarm, the chance to step into his shoes for one

whole day!

Commenting on his association with the show, Hrithik said:

"I had a great time doing Live My Life. Normally, we are so busy in

our lives that we never get to really know a fan. But because of the

format of this show, I really got to know Jyoti and it was delightful! For

me meeting Jyoti, the fan who lived my life on the show, was an

Yash invites Prashant to celebrate Diwali with his family members in

Punarvivah. Prashant is in a dead fix but Yash persuades and Prashant has

to agree. Everyone at home is enjoying Diwali. Ansh is baffled as his dad did

not get him flowerpot crackers. Aarti pacifies him and says she has misplaced

them so it's her fault. Aarti promises to find them and starts looking for Yash.

Prateek takes the kids inside. Aarti is wandering for Yash and

suddenly and slips. Yash comes in time and saves her from

falling.

there's fire. And when a popu-

lar television actor clams shut

when questioned about his friend-

ship with a co-star, it seems

there's more to the picture than

meets the eye. Mohit Raina, who

has been doing a great job play-

ing Lord Shiva in Life OK's mytho-

logical serial Mahadev, is a tough

cookie. He evades publicity and

even after he agrees to talk, in-

stead of refusing to comment on

his personal life, terminates the

interview.

When asked about his chem-

istry with both the leading ladies

on the show Mouni Roy and

Sonarika Bhadoria, he says, "I

think both of them play their parts

correctly. It is up to the audiences

to decide which one they like bet-

ter. As an actor, the pairing with a

co-star doesn't matter. The audi-

ence has to like the pair." Though

viewers love the pair of Sonarika,

as Parvati, with Mohit, they ap-

preciated Mouni's role as Sati in

the show much more, which led

to the rumours that the two were

dating each other. Is it true? "I don't

know what to say about it. We

are co-stars and good friends.

MOVIE MASALA

A country where movies have become an inte-

gral part of the culture, it's not really surpris-

ing to see the involvement and influence of

Bollywood on day-to-day life. Movie Masala, 30

minutes daily on Aaj Tak, has dedicatedly been

providing the viewers with the latest happen-

ings and gossips of the Bollywood. As a daily

wrap on our happening film industry, it gives an

insider's view on what's happening in Tinsel town.

On the Couch is a super slick, uber

conversa-tional half an hour interview

based show on Headlines Today. The

show will feature the guest, Koel the interviewer

and the couch. The couch has become the

trademark of the show and visually dramatic.

The line of questioning is always about what

components make up the person, what makes

them tick, how they think, what has been their

state of mind in the different stages of their

lives, how they have got where they are and

how does that make them feel.

The focus of the show is to break down

Raji M Shinde.

The event was anchored by none other

than Satinder Satti in her usual charismatic

manner. The winner has been awarded cash

prize of Rs one lakh and a Dubai trip while the

first runner-up has been given cash prize of

Rs 50,000 plus gift hampers worth Rs 40,000.

The second runner up has been given a cash

prize of Rs 25,000 in addition to gift hampers

worth Rs 30,000.

Renowned Punjabi singers enthralled

the audience with their captivating perfor-

mances and folk numbers. Those who per-

formed at the event include Manmohan

Waris and Kamal Heer, Harbhajan Mann

and Gursewak Mann, Miss Pooja, Satinder

Satti and Amarinder Gill.

Miss PTC Punjabi is a platform that un-

veils the talent in Punjabi women and pre-

pares them for a bright future ahead, in

addition to highlighting the traditions and

customs followed in Punjabi culture.

Cricketers and actors have always been ruling the mind of Indians.

They have the charm to mesmerize the crowd and reap benefits

out of it. Listed here are some personalities who top the charts by

earning huge bucks through endorsements.

Shahrukh KhanThe King Khan of Bollywood

earns around 150 crore a year

from endorsements. His list of en-

dorsements include Pepsi, Bagpiper,

Santro, Omega, Nokia, Emami ( 5

crore every year), Hyundai, Airtel,

Videocon, Sun Feast, Tag Heur,

Mayur Suitings, Pulse Polio and AIDS

control programmes. With 34 brand

endorsements worth 238 crore,

Shah Rukh Khan also charges 10-

15 crore per film. He owns Red Chil-

lies Entertainment production house

and IPL Cricket Team, Kolkata Knight

Riders of worth 500 crore!! He

earns 2-3 crores per day from en-

Kaju Khoya

Fragrant gram flour laddoos stuffedwith kaju and khoya mixture

The ever popular black forest cake

INGREDIENTS

• Chocolate sponge cake 8 inch round

• Orange juice 3/4 cup

• Whipped cream 2 cups

• Canned cherries, stoned 100 grams

• Chocolate, grated 1/2 cup

• Chocolate shavings 1 cup

METHOD

Trim the rounded top of the cake and

then turn it upside down. Slice it hori-

zontally into three pieces. Keep one

pieces on a plate. Moisten it with some

orange juice. Spread a layer of

whipped cream. Over that sprinkle

some canned cherries. Over this

keep another slice of the cake

and moisten it with some or-

ange juice. Spread a layer of

whipped cream. Over that

sprinkle some canned cher-

ries. Sprinkle some grated

chocolate. Keep the last slice

of cake over this and again

moisten it with orange juice.

Spread a thick layer of whipped

INGREDIENTS

• Cashewnuts, coarsely

chopped 25

• Khoya/mawa, grated 1

cup

• Coarse gram flour

(besan) 4 cups

• Ghee 1/4 cup

• Powdered sugar 1/2 cup

• Green cardamom powder 1 teaspoon

• Sugar substitute sucralose 7 teaspoons

METHOD

Heat ghee in a non stick pan, add the gram

flour and sauté till lightly browned and fragrant,

stirring frequently.

Add khoya and sauté, stirring continuously, till

the khoya blends well with the gram flour. Add

sugar and mix. Add green cardamom powder,

cashewnut powder and mix well. Transfer the

mixture into a bowl. Let it cool a little and then

add the sucralose and mix well. Shape into

even sized laddoos. Store when completely

cooled. These laddoos should be con-

sumed fast since they have khoya in them

and will not keep for too long. Better

to store them in the refrigerator.

cream over the top and on the sides of

the sandwiched cake too. Dip the pal-

ette knife in hot water, wipe dry and

smoothen the top and the sides. Fill a

piping bag fitted with a star nozzle with

the remaining whipped cream. Pipe out

rosettes on the top of the cake along

the outer edge. Sprinkle chocolate shav-

ings on the top and also stick them on

the sides of the cake. Finally place a

cherry on each rosette. Keep the cake

in the refrigerator for an hour or two to

set well. Cut into wedges and serve

chilled.


I am not really a fitness freak. In fact, I hardly

work out. I have been an athlete all through-

out school and college and that has really

helped me stay fit. I eat every half an hour

so my metabolic rate is high. But if I have to

work out then I might jog and do a few

crunches. I don't go for heavy workouts;

I have a trainer who comes to my place.

I work out for half an hour at the maxi-

mum. I love to run and I enjoy jogging.

Food for Thought

I am a non-vegetarian. My

favourite is chicken. I eat fish five

times a week because I am a

Manglorean and fish is our

staple diet. I probably have

chicken once a week and

mutton once in a blue

moon. I try to avoid red

meat.

Diet Routine

I begin my day with:

A glass of warm wa-

ter. Later, I get really

hungry since I don't

have any carbohy-

drates at night. I like to

have a proper breakfast,

first thing in the morning.

My breakfast:

Two egg whites with a

slice of bread. Quite often I

have a South Indian breakfast,

idli for instance. Half an hour

later, I have a cup of coffee. I

keep a gap of half an hour between

all my meals. Like for instance, in the

morning if I eat an omelette, I have my

coffee after half an hour. In the mornings

after I have had my glass of water and if I

have a very early shoot (5:30 or 6 am) I

have only a glass of

vegetable juice

since I can't eat

breakfast so early in

the day.

My lunch:

Two rotis, a veg-

etable, a fish/chicken dish. I follow this

every half an hour to 45 minutes diet

throughout the day. I am on this high pro-

tein diet so I have egg whites throughout

the day. As far as possible, home food.

When I am shooting, I try and carry food

from home.

Evening snack

It is not so essential but I like to have a

grilled sandwich or poha once in a while.

My dinner:

I avoid carbs but when one is out

shooting one has fewer options. In the

night, if I am at home, I eat a tandoori

chicken.
