Gaining New Ground in Breast CancerResearch

In a recent Komen blogChief ScientificAdvisors George SledgeMD and JenniferPietenpol PhD talkabout the state of breastcancer research what wemay have missed in 2017whatrsquos exciting now andhow Komen is poised totackle the most excitingand important questions inbreast cancer

Komenrsquos Global and Local Outreach toAddress Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC)

KomenPfizer Partnership is Bringing Effective Solutions for MBC

Pfizer the European School of Oncology (ESO) the Advanced Breast Cancer ThirdInternational Consensus Conference (ABC3) and leaders in the MBC community(including Komen) collaborated to pull together a report on the global analysis ofMBC spanning a decade (2005 ndash 2015) The report recently published in TheBreast calls attention to the gaps in care resources and support for MBC patients indifferent parts of the world

Unfortunately in lower

income countries about50-80 percent of patientsare diagnosed with latestage breast cancer(stage III or IV) comparedto 10-15 percent ofdiagnoses in high-incomecountries (like the US) Therefore Komen andPfizer have partnered totake on the global burdenof MBC You can readmore about progress andfuture goals of this effortin a recent Komen blog

KomenPfizer Partnership for Local Education about MBC

As an extension of this partnership Komen and Pfizer have teamed up to supporteducational programs for those living with MBC and their caregivers in the USSpecifically Pfizer is donating $500000 in support of MBC programming at KomenAffiliates Through May 31 2018 Affiliates are encouraged to submit applications forfunding which can include evidence-based patient-focused conferences events andother activities designed to educate the MBC community at the local level Learnmore here

Komenrsquos Work in Tanzania

Komen and the Tanzania Ministry of Health with input from global health and civilsociety experts have developed National Guidelines for Early Diagnosis of BreastCancer and Referral for Treatment in Tanzania The new guidelines are vital toaddressing breast cancer in Tanzania ndash a country where about 80 percent of womenare diagnosed with late-stage disease when treatment options are limited Learnmore in a new Komen Press Release

Upcoming Research FundingOpportunities

Komen will continue its research investment in early career breast cancerresearchers The new Request for Applications (RFAs) will be posted in the nextmonth or two on our Funding Opportunities page Stay tuned

Research Snapshots

If cancer cells are found in the lymphnode does that mean they can spreadto distant organs Experts still debatethis Using imaging techniques a teamof scientists including formerKomen grantee Giorgio SeanoPhDco-authored a publication

in Science showing that cancer cellsthat have spread to a nearby lymphnode can invade the blood stream andspread (or metastasize) to otherorgans

Although triple negative breast cancer(TNBC) can be treated we stilllack effective targeted treatments forthis aggressive subtype In a Komen-funded study published in NatureMedicine Thomas (Trey) WestbrookPhD and colleagues discovered newTNBC therapeutic targets andstrategies which will soon be tested inthe clinic Learn more about theseimportant results here

According to a recent study publishedin Clinical Cancer Research higherlymphocyte counts predict lowermortality in early-stage TNBCsuggesting that higher immunefunction improves treatmenteffectiveness in this patient populationKomen-funded researchers thatcontributed to these findings includefirst author Anosheh AfghahiMD (pictured left) Christina CurtisPhD Chief Scientific Advisor GeorgeSledge MD Komen Scholar MelindaTelli MD and former KomenScholar Sunil Badve MD Morecoverage of this study can befound here

New strategies to block the return of breast cancer are desperately needed toimprove patient outcomes In a Komen-funded study recently publishedin Nature Subhamoy Dasgupta PhD former Komen Scholar Bert OrsquoMalleyMD and their team identified two proteins involved in metabolism that could be

targeted to stop tumor recurrence andor prevent breast cancer metastasis You canread more here

In a new Journal of ClinicalInvestigation publication Komen-funded grantee Weibo Lou PhD andteam show that a protein calledZMYND8 helps estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancers survive andgrow in a low-oxygen environment andmay be a target to treat MBC You canread more about this exciting data

In a recent NatureCommunications publication DanielMcGrail PhD and colleagues showthat cytokine release (mediated by theDNA damage response protein ATM) isa primary driver of T-cell infiltration intoa tumor ndash a characteristic that candictate response to immunotherapies
