In the No. 1 shop, lathe machining, drilling,coating and packing are performed whilecutting, forging and heat treatment are carriedout in the No. 2 shop. The two shops arecompletely equipped with a full range ofmodern equipment. Welding Neck FlangesThe welding neck flange is normally referred to as the“high hub” flange. It is designed to transfer stresses tothe pipe, there by reducing high stress concentrationsat the base of the flange. The welding neck flange isthe best designed butt-welded flange of those currentlyavailable because of its inherent structural value. It isexpensive because of the designed.

Threaded(Screwed) FlangesThe threaded flange is similar to the slip-on flange,but the bore is threaded. Its chief merit is that it can beassembled without welding, explaining its use in lowpressure services at ordinary atmospheric temperatures,and in highly explosive areas where welding createa hazard.

Slip-on FlangesThe slip-on flange has a low hub because the pipe slipsinto the flange prior to welding. It is welded both insideand out to provide sufficient strength and preventleakage. Slip on flanges are all bored slightly larger thanthe O. D. of the matching pipe. They are preferred overwelding neck flanges by many users due to their lowerinitial cost, but final installation cost is probably not muchless than that of the welding neck flange because of theadditional welding involved.

Lap Joint FlangesThe lap joint flange is practically identical to a slip-onflange except it has a radius at the intersection of thebore and flange face. This radius is necessary to havethe flange accommodate a lap joint stub end. Normally,a lap joint flange and the lap joint stub end are matedtogether in an assembly system.

Build FlangesThe build flange is a flange without a bore. It is used toclose off the ends of a piping system and/or a pressurevessel opening. It also permits easy access to the interior of a line or vessel once it has been sealed andmust be reopened.

Socket Welding FlangesThe socket welding flange is similar to a slip-on flangeexcept it has a bore and a counterbore dimension.The counterbore is slightly larger than the O. D. of thematching pipe, allowing the pipe to be inserted into theflange similar to a slip-on flange. The diameter oh thesmaller bore is the same as the I. D. of the matching pipe.A restriction is built into the bottom of the bore whichsets as a shoulder for the pipe to rest on. This eliminatesany restriction in flow when using a socket welding flange.
