Milestones in Hair and Heritage Activity This activity is designed to be delivered in one big group - up to 10 people, or several smaller groups* Aim To learn more about the significance of hair to the identity of people of African origin To explore the connections between black hair and wider social factors such as economics, gender and politics Time required 45 minutes, minimum Resources needed: The Milestones in Hair and Heritage Infographic The Black Hair Story Infographic The dates for the timeline from 1500 to the present Preparation needed: Cut out all the squares on the infographic Milestones in Heritage and Hair so that they all separated* Prepare the timeline so the dates are aligned in chronological order from 1500 to the present day* Have a copy of The Black Hair Story Infographic to hand so that the dates can be checked for accuracy at the end of the activity* *You will need several sets of the items above depending on how many groups you are working with What You Have to do: Participants must work together to match the events to the dates in the timeline in chronological order. Everyone should be encouraged to discuss and deliberate as a group to complete the activity successfully. Debrief Discuss with the group how successful they were in being able to identify the milestones correctly – which ones were easier to match and why? Discuss which events participants knew most about, which were less well known and why this might be the case. Encourage the group to identify events on the timeline that they wish to know more about, and which ones they can elaborate on so that the context for each of the episodes in history can also be examined. Ask the group to identify any new information they have learnt from the activity and how this makes them feel.
