Simplifying Text Complexity

Se�ng Up Google Docs to Confer on Student Reading—

This ten minute video created by Bill Bass explains how conferencing with students about their

reading can be done in a collabora%ve space with mul%ple teachers and/or students. This

instruc%onal strategy provides the opportunity for teachers to confer with students and groups

of students, such as a book clubs, according to their reading levels.

How To See Leading zeros in Excel

This week I had the opportunity to work with barcodes and found out that our library barcodes begin

with a zero, which poses are problem when using an Excel sheet to print out over due books for

example. By using the custom number feature while forma<ng cells, you will be able to see those

leading zeros. To display one leading zero with variable-length numbers like our barcodes, create a

custom format by typing in zero (0) (in quota%on marks, followed by the number sign (#). Like this:

driven conferences with a primary focus on technology and computers. Educa%onal technology is a common topic area for

edcamps, as are pedagogy, prac%cal examples in instruc%onal use of modern tools, and solving the problems technology can

Student Opportunity Show-Me a Movie is a digital storytelling contest for students

grades 2-12 in Missouri and its Border States. These students are

invited to demonstrate their crea%vity and digital moviemaking

skills in one of five categories.

Cash prizes go to the school of the winning movies in each

category. See last year's winners and winners from past years.

All winning movies are show-cased at a recep%on on February 11, 2014 during

the Midwest Educa%on Technology Conference (METC). The students from the winnings

Thinking About Library Spaces in Terms of Mission & Vision As we think about our library spaces as more of a learning commons we need to reflect on how those

spaces might be used to necessitate our overall mission and vision. Students are our patrons and we want

them to come to a place that inspires them to be capable, curious and confident learners who understand

and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Many of you have been talking to me about your spaces, that being said, it isn’t an all or nothing approach to

design or funding. You can mix traditional furniture with modern décor. You can also work from year-to-

year as money become available. So, dream big and create a vision for each area and work on just one

section at a time. When laying out your space, imagine the space divided into functional, convertible are-

as that will entice your students to return to the area. Areas to consider may include: lounge/soft seating/

recreational, small group, computer, quiet /individual study, high-interest/popular/new display, collec-

tions, service, group collaboration/conference, project area, and café/vending.

Things that are currently trending within library spaces are:

soL sea%ng, study areas,

and func%onal tables.

Décor!

Large graphics, soL tex%les, warm ligh%ng, ceiling art,

and colorful modular walls help to define spaces.


Ideas in Shelving!

Mobility and ligh%ng are playing a big role in how shelves are being designed and used. Other ideas include

how to arrange those shelves and how to use small areas to incorporate book shelve displays.


Func%onal Spaces

These areas include a gaming/media literacy space, self search catalog and checkout kiosk, a wall size dry erase

board in a collabora%ve area, a charging sta%on counter, and a media pod that is as comfortable to the creators

and as it is to the viewers.
