50 YEARS OF SERVICE

It is with great pleasure that I serve as Grand Knight of Council 4970

during this 50th year of our founding. This booklet, that has been prepared

with hard work by a number of Brothers and our Lady Knights, reflects much

of our wonderful accomplishments over 50 years. We are missing some of

those early years and I ask if any of you have material to share, let one of our

members know, and we will be pleased to share your memories. We, as did

our past members, serve in the spirit that we Knights took an oath to do.

We are blessed to have two of our Charter Brothers with us, Vince LaBate

and Erik Nooren. These two Knights dedicated much of their time to the

Order and have shared in the 50 years of experience in service to our Council.

We honor these Brothers at our 50th Anniversary Celebration.

With God’s grace we will continue to be the best Council we can be. We have certainly received so many

awards over the years, but we will not stop serving, we will march on, united together and bonded with mutual

support, encouragement, dedication and steadfast faith. May our Blessed Mother, our servant of God, Blessed

Father Michael J. McGivney, protect and prayer for us always. Vivat Jesus!

Donald Harmata, Grand Knight

COUNCIL 4970 OVER THE YEARS

Our council was founded on May 10, 1960 by a group of dedicated Knights who saw the growth and the obvious need

in the Arden-Carmichael area for a separate council. At our beginning we met in a converted WWII building (Xavier Hall)

on the grounds of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish. Shortly thereafter we moved to another WWII building (The Cottage) on

the grounds of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish which was more centrally located to the five parishes we served at that

time, St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, Presentation Parish, Our Lady of the Assumption Parish (OLA), St. John the Evangelist

Parish and St. Philomene Parish. Since that humble beginning we have grown to over 200 men and their families. A few

years ago members from St. Philomene Parish formed their own council, but we brought in Holy Wisdom Parish. We are

still centrally located at OLA but have moved from the Cottage to the newer ministry building, St. John Hall, for our

meetings.

In 1981 Articles of Incorporation for Arden Carmichael Inc. were filed with the State of

California for the primary purpose of establishing a base for acquiring a permanent home for

the council. The Corporation started small with cake sales and garage sales. However, in

1985 through the effort of PGK Wil Fontaine, we started a bingo program which almost

depleted our treasury that first month - December 1985. With persistence and blessings from

above, we made it through 1985 and 1986 with a growing treasury. Although we were

hosting bingo for over 400 players, the location was not convenient for most of our

members. With many tears from our patrons, we ceased operations in December 1986, and

then a year later we found a new home at Fantasia Bingo Center near St. Ignatius Parish on

Arden Way. For seven more years we had one of the most successful operations in

Sacramento County. After Bingo (AB) our Directors were fortunate to invest much of our

treasury again successfully. Now we are more conservative with our investments, but still

generate sufficient funds to donate over $15,000 annually to charitable church, community and youth programs.

As we are now ten years into the 21st Century, we have already achieved, more than once, the highest recognition by

our Supreme Office, Star Council. We could not have achieved this status without those that went before us nor without the

hard work of our current 200 plus Council members and their families. Thus, we continue to move forward, in charity,

unity, fraternity and patriotism.

Unity is important for our Church and our Order. United as 1.7 million Catholic men and family members, we are the

strong right arm of the Church. The real power of the Knights of Columbus lies in unity through prayer to the Blessed

Virgin Mary and her rosary, which every member receives on his First Degree, as she brings us to her Son, Jesus Christ, in

the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of our faith. How grateful we are for God's infinite goodness to us Knights

and families. How thankful we are in knowing that God helps us in our weakness and gives us the strength we need in good

times and bad. Should our unity be weakened or shattered through lack of dedication to oneness in the Lord, God has given

us the means to restore it. Unity in the Lord means unity in our Council as we move forward in 2010 and beyond our first

50 years.

Corporation President

PRO-LIFE

Prior to our December 2010 business meeting we had a short talk by Colleen Branagan from the Sacramento Life Center. She described the Center’s ongoing project that includes buying an RV and equipping it with an Ultrasound machine. When Ultrasound pictures are shown to pre-abortive women, 85% of these women decide against abortion. The Knights of Columbus are strongly supporting this project, and each Council is expected to donate monies toward the ultrasound machine.

The mobile Ultrasound van will travel around the area to the abortion clinics. Funds have already been received to buy the van. Now funds are needed for the ultrasound device. Chapter is looking for $12,000 that Supreme will match to buy the device. At our December business meeting we were proud to receive over $350 in free will donations from those Brother Knights at the meeting. This amount was matched by two brothers at the meeting making our donation over $700. What a great group of brothers we have. (Additional donations were made following this January 2010 Paladin article).

CORPORATION ARDEN-CARMICHAEL, INC

Hi Brothers, Happy 50th anniversary Brothers,

Sorry Gloria and I can’t be there to share the

celebration with you. Gloria & I reminisce

many times on the fun we had with our

Wednesday nights and Friday matinee Bingo

Operations. So many friends (I’d rather not

name some and leave out so many others and

others whose names seem to escape me these

days) who helped make our fun also a great

fund raiser for the Council. And sad to say

some of them have gone and we know they are

looking down on us. We did enjoy that

weekly gathering and know the funds are

being put to good use. Say Hi to all who

remember us. Love from Sun City, Tucson

PRAYER FOR POPE BENEDICT XVI

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to your shepherd,

Benedict, a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge

and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may

he, as successor to the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your

Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world.

Amen.

V/ Let us pray for Benedict, the pope. R/ May the Lord preserve

him, give him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth, and

not hand him over to the power of his enemies.

V/ May your hand be upon your holy servant. R/ And upon your son,

whom you have anointed.

Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be…

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PRAYER

O Almighty and Eternal God, Lord of the Universe, sustain us, we beseech Thee, o'er the

course of "life's tempestuous sea". Keep us, we pray Thee, secure within the Bark of Peter, ever

trustful of Christ and his Vicars to guide us along the ways of peace and prosperity. May Jesus,

Our Savior, preserve us in the unity of the Holy Faith and confirm our hopes of sharing its

treasures with America. Send forth the power and love of the Holy Spirit, that we may be

blessed in our efforts to set forth Thy glory in this land under the patronage of Mary's

Immaculate Conception. Let our Fraternity flourish in

justice and charity and give eternal praise and glory to

the Most Holy Trinity. Be mindful of each of our

brothers, departed, and receive them into the haven of

eternal peace. Amen.

Prayer for the Sainthood of Fr.

Michael McGivney

O great and glorious God,

You imbued Your holy priest, Father Michael J.

McGivney, with deep priestly virtue and especially

with pastoral concern for the poor, the orphan, The

widow, for the Christian education of youth, for the

protection of the faith of the working man of his day.

Now that his priestly ministry continues to spread to

countless millions throughout the world, through the efforts and influence of the order of the

Knights of Columbus, which Father McGivney founded, we beseech you, Heavenly Father, to

raise Your faithful servant, Michael, to the honors of the altar. We ask this favor through our

Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother, Mary and our Mother, Amen.
